My husband died from taking amiodarone as he developed pulmonary fibrosis-his doctor had him take it for many months. Now my family and I are left in shock and devastated.
I am so sorry about your loss. The side effects of this drug are awful. I was prescribed the medicine today but came home and watched these videos and have decided not to take this drug. Thank you so much for sharing.
I am so sorry for your loss. My mother passed away from taking Amiodarone for only four months. I posted a link to my channel, as I have made three videos and I’m speaking out very loudly against this medication.
I am so grateful to you doctor for your video. I was prescribed this medicine today by my cardiologist. I took the medicine home and then watched your video. So since I have watched your videos before I am going to take the medicine back to the pharmacy so they can bin it. Your great work and expertise is saving lives. We are so grateful to you.
You need to have your prescribing doctor monitor your thyroid while taking this drug. I took Amiodarone from Jan. 2024 to Aug. 2024 and it raised my TSH level to 26.88 (Reference Range: 0.40-4.50 mlU/L). Prior to taking Amiodarone, I had never had a Thyroid problem. Once I successfully had my PFA, thankfully my Electrophysiologist told me to immediately discontinue the Amiodarone. He will re-check my TSH levels in a week following the discontinuation of the Amiodarone and then again 2 weeks later to confirm my TSH levels have returned to normal.
Thank you for this excellent explanation. My husband just started this medication and I have been very anxious about the side effects. Best regards. Lorie
Notice be said Parkinson's after long use at 200mg of drug. You may suffer heart attacks with Beta blockers and Calcium channel blockers with it. All the other side effects start taking affect in 6 months, that's while all the other tests. Get off the crap as quicky or the body will decay organ by organ with the eyes first.
Thank you Dr. Landau for an excellent video! With my history of low BP & heart rate when i lie down at night, and low 02 when i lie down at night ( I need supplemental 02) and my subclinical asthma, I am surprised I was prescribed the 200 mg twice a day loading dose for 2 weeks. Seems like I should get the lower dose for safety's sake to start with. I'm supposed to start it tomorrow short term until my ablation surgery which is in August. I think i could just not take it at all & just wait for my ablation surgery. I have a-fib attack for a few days twice 6 months apart which is the most frequent ive had attacks. OMG - i take Claritin & he mentions that as interacting. I think i give up. I'm sure my nurse practioner doesnt know all this or she would have said stop my Claritin.
Very helpful coverage. Would appreciate your thoughts on alternate treatments other than Amiodarone. My cadiologist suggested inserting a shunt rather than blood thinner. Would this be a good, long-lasting workaround? Thank you.
Hi Kimberly... My doctor just started me on this medicine too and I'm afraid as well . How are you now? If you don't mind me asking... I was given 200mg to take day & night, but to be on the safe side I only take it once a day. Started it today. My question to you is how are you feeling if you have decided to take it.
Amiodarone's potential adverse side effects are numerous but I have a cardiologist, anesthesiologist and an internist who all three tell me the daily oral 200 mg is extremely beneficial and very much harmless in the short run to help correct arrhythmia so why is this doc so focused on the negatives trying to scare the hell out of everyone. The New England Journal of Medicine found a 15% death rate AFTER TWO YEARS of amiodarone and a 19% death rate in the placebo group.
I was prescibed this 200mg / day and in combination with Ditalizem it has all but stopped my aifbs I was having. I have an ICD due to a cardiac arrest in November 2023. My heartrate and blood pressure seem good....not too low. I cycle a lot and this doesn't seem to supress my breathing like other beta blockers I was on. I'm going to meet with electrophysiologist in 2 weeks to talk a possible ablation, but so far this drug combo seems good. I wonder which path I should take?
IMO ablation is preferrable to long-term use of Amiodarone. It's great for short term use (couple months) at lower dosages (sub 400mg/d), but the longer it's taken, the higher the incidence of side effects becomes. The risk of sudden cardiac arrest and all-cause mortality also increases. Also, calcium channel blockers/Amiodarone are only supressing the cause of afib but they don't fix it. My father (59y) had cryoablation (pulmonary vein isolation) via catheter method a couple months back in order to treat cardioversion resistant afib. No side effects and afib is gone, since it got rid off the underlying problem. Recovery from the procedure was very quick and uneventful. You get to sleep while it's done, so it isn't too unpleasant either.
If patient has hyperthyrodism with total t4 200 or more and low tsh low than 0.05 and has AF.. 1_how to control Af if only have metaprolol (betalock) and labetalol 2_if they gave the patient loading dose of amiodarone IV the effect of increase T4 will appear rapidly in euthryoid and hyperthyroid patient? Thanks and i hope u answer me cause I have an exam
THANK YOU!!! actual - - Patient: Any side effects with this med? Doctor: No more than any other drug, but give us a call if you get lightheaded or dizzy.
Dang...just went to my cardiologist for a followup...have permanent afib...wants me to take this and try again with CV (first one failed ) then maybe ablation. This just sounds terrible. For the most part, I'm living ok with my afib and working towards better lifestyle habits; just started CPAP 4 months ago. Cardiologist said it would be a low dose and would only be used to get ready for Cardioversion. I think I will just continue to treat my afib conservatively; this is just awful!!!!!
I was prescribed 3x 200mg a day for two weeks now it’s been increased to 3x 400 mg I’m concerned this is too much! No side effects as yet AFIB gone and having ablation in 2 weeks! Should I continue with this strong dose until ablation!?
My mother died from pulmonary fibrosis that is believed to have been from amiodarone toxicity. I have done three videos and I am speaking out about this drug. It is effective on the front end, but the side effects far outweigh its effectiveness for most people, in my opinion.
A follow up, developed vertigo and blurred vision , ceased amiodarone medication and side effects have settled, ablation was successful and went smoothly, three weeks on still in sinus but blood oxygen around 90 to 94 so more tests!!
(HUG) Watched to the end, this was an amazing video, after bypass surgery is it safe to be on 200mg a day. Lord help me, I wish I could know what to ask the Cardiologist to help my husband, this drug sounds like the worst he is on, so many cardiologists in one office, I wish I felt comfortable knowing they are doing what is right for him. You explain everything so perfectly Dr. Ken Landow, how long should my husband stay on this , how do they wean him off it, and when would the best time to stop this drug . It scares the hell out of me! God bless you Doctor.
Please do not let your doctor tell you to stay on a medication that is making you feel terrible. Your body is going to speak to you as to what is right and what is wrong. It is infuriating that doctors push this medication. Please see the link I am about to post. My mother passed away after being on amiodarone for only four months. I’m speaking out very loudly about this medication.
I am certainly not suggesting that this is everyone’s story, but my mother passed away from taking it for only four months. I am posting a link here, as I have made three videos and I am speaking out very loudly against this medication. It is unbelievable the number of people who are affected by taking this drug.
My husband was on this drug for nearly two years and developed kidney disease and edema so the cardiologist took him off the drug. He started to have many other problems and spent five days in hospital. He now has liver damage and has been diagnosed with thyroidis/hypothyroidism. This drug is dangerous and should be taken off the market.
it is one of the worst medication’s can be taken for elderly, cognitive decline, jaw tremor, slow moving, liver issues, hyperthyroidism. It is absolutely horrible and doctors refuse to take my Mom off of it. It is a horrible med and only should be used as a last resort.
