The Best of JP solos are the duels between kk and Glen, this son is a real kickass.

The albums usually give the solo breakdowns in the liner notes

Love this song. Another good one from this album is "Blood Red Skies".

still a vocal challenge not just because of high notes, but the dynamics and dramatic drive

They heard about one second of the next song. If they let it run another ten seconds they would have had an out of body experience.
    This whole album is GOLD.

Definitely! I've tried to get so many to react to Blood Red Skies and they never will. I mean it's the best song on the album. I don't know what the deal is? It's epic like Pain Killer.

Halford is singing along with the guitar part that's really high in the solo.

Judas Priest had written 2 albums worth of songs by 1986 and wanted to release a double album "Twin Turbos"... one disc of commercial songs... another disc of heavy metal songs. But their label Columbia said 'no'... So, the decision was made to record the commercial album first, which became their 1986 album 'Turbo'... Priest was hoping that record would break the band into multi-platinum status. Sadly, that did not happen - 'Turbo' went gold'.
Then, the focus was to finish the 'metal' record in 1988 after the release of the 1987 live record 'Priest live' ... The bonus was that Rob Halford (vocals) had given up drinking after his su.ic.ide attempt back in '86 and producer Tom Allom said that Halford's "unreal" vocals got even better in the studio when he got sober.
Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing were in peak form and showered the 'Ram it down' record w/ blazing leads and shredding solos... It was a very heavy record and one of Priest's best - both the fast metal and the slower Sabbath-style riffs were on it.
The problem was that Dave Holland (drums) was having health issues and his performances on 'Priest live' were spotty in places... It apparently got worse when Judas Priest prepared to record 'Ram it down'... The band felt loyal to Holland and kept him in the band while he sought medical help... but they decided to use a drum machine in the studio to complete the tracks.
Dave Holland did the 1988/ '89 tour and then left the band, apparently not on good terms... He passed away in 2018.
Columbia (the label) felt that 'Ram it down' was too uncompromising and only released 1 single - a cover of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode"... The album sold gold again and the tour was successful... but critics called Judas Priest "out of step" w/ the current metal scene where Metallica was then selling 2x platinum of 'And justice for all' ... and thrash metal bands like Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, etc. were leaving Priest behind in terms of intensity and record sales.
After the trial in which Judas Priest were accused of inspiring a grisly double s.ui.cide in Nevada, the band was angry and determined to show that they could keep up w/ the younger thrash metal bands... American drummer Scott Travis joined the band and 'Painkiller' in 1990 gave Judas Priest a boost in their career for sure.

At the end of the last song Ram it down. You started to hear the opening chords to the song. Heavy methat's all you need to react to that by far is my favorite of the Judas Priest songs blows away every other group that tried to do a song called heavy metal.

I'm sure someone's already commented, but that's not Dave Holland drumming. It's a drum machine. Next album was Painkiller and Scott Travis had joined the band.
A bit of a bummer for this old guy as I loved the late Dave, but reportedly Tipton didn't think Holland could handle this new tempo and direction.

yes, and the iconic drum intro for Painkiller is a new incarnation of Scott Travis intro to "Scarified" during his work in Racer X with Paul Gilbert

Awesome tune! Judas Priest is great at times like these. Painkiller awesome too. This band is tough for me sometimes, because I always love their guitars… but Halford’s voice often grates on me like nails on a chalkboard. However, at times - nobody else could do it better - like here…

This was like to prelude to the next album Painkiller that is deffenetly one of the best metal albums ever. This album is okay, but there is too much of a 80´s sound in it. But this song and Johnny B. Goode. I am quite sure that you two would love that cover. It is the best cover i´ve ever heard of "Johnny B Goode".

    • @benbaer3525
