Thanks for including the stretch stitch. I’ve been machine sewing for most of my 75 years, but didn’t know about this stretch stitch. Your demonstration was excellent, both the visual and your commentary. 🥰
Boy, am I glad I found your channel! I am in the middle of trying to mend some of my son's clothing and your tips are going to do the trick! I never learned any of this in my younger years!
Great sewing instructions! Wish they still taught this in school today! So glad I learned back in the day. Kids today can't sew a button on a shirt! In fact, they dont even have a needle and thread!
Thank you so much for actually including what to do when you're running out of thread, I don't think I've seen that in a video before and it always freaked me out 😅 And thank you for including the stretch stitch, and showing why it should be used and stuff! I definitely hadn't seen that one before!! I'm nearly legally blind, so I think machine sewing would be a bit difficult for me, and with hand sewing I can have my work close to my face. I'm wanting to make a superhero costume, which that stitch will be perfect for! Thank you! I'm glad I found this video :)
I have been hand sewing the running stitch for lining some of my crochet projects. I have been doing them in short stitches. Now im using the back stitch from now on. Thank you!
Thanks Jan! Im 37. Been sewing since I was 5. My sewing machine broke and have been hand mending. My daughter asked to learn so I googled. But, I never learned HERRINGBONE. I'm excited to keep learning new stitches. As a seasoned stitcher this was helpful.
Thank you for your clear instructions. I knew two of the stitches, but I didn't know why they're used. And I learned a new one with the stretch stitch. That will definitely come in handy. I'm trying to get back into hand stitching because it's nice not having to power up the sewing machine and not having to be stuck in one place while sewing small projects.
The beauty of sewing by hand is that you can carry it anywhere and do it on the couch while watching TV. disabled people can often do this activity, too.
Thank you for this! I was looking to understand how to sew gathers by hand (I just had a baby and he won't let me put him down long enough to pull out my machine to finish a project I started before he was born) when I came across this video. I especially love the tip about marking a line for where to put stitches. I've detested hand sewing for a long time because my stitches come out ugly, so I'm hoping this will help me not hate hand sewing as badly. I also never knew about the stretch stitch, which is super handy to know for mending. I have 3 boys, so mending is a big thing in my house.
Several thoughts: You have a very soothing, relaxing, hypnotic voice. Have you ever considered doing audio books? I appreciate your video. I'm really amazed, perhaps stunned, at how easy sewing really is. I believe I was originally "taught" wrong by my mother. I think it's difficult for someone to teach someone else anything when they themselves really have no idea on what they're doing. I like the idea that I know, now, how many possible stitches there are, not that I would use all of them. I like the idea of quick and dirty. This video helped for that goal. My other goal was to break out the Boy Scout handbook to review my knots. I only wanted to learn knots, because that's at the heart of sewing. I noticed with sewing, it's not really knots, but a series of loopings. Again, thanks for the video, and I did subscribe.
Thanks so much! This was a great tutorial! Im flipping a beaded dress and my machine can’t sew thru beads lol so I gotta hand stitch. This was so helpful!
A lot of people don't have a sewing machine. They need to hurry up and invest in one real quick lol. Thanks for the tips because I am not good at sewing by hand.
Thank you! I am 64 and gave been sewing since I was about 10, but have never been shown any hand stitching except how to sew on a button. Very helpful!
Anytime I use thread the knot ends up going through the fabric, even when I use a tiny needle. I learned the little bit I know using dental floss as thread which I love because of its flexibility and stiffness. I know some people say I can wax upholstery thread but it doesn't have that nice flex that I like. Do you have any suggestions of something that might be stronger than dental floss while still allowing for that little bit of stretch?
I have a question about the stretch cross stitch shape. What if I have to sew across the stretch of the material? For instance shortening across the top thick shoulder straps of a dress or top when the stretch is actually going the other way ie up and down the strap, or even a four-way stretch? Does that still work well? Sorry if that’s a dumb question.
The information in these videos is so valuable; please consider lowering the music soundtrack volume so we can hear Ms. Howell;. She shouldn’t have to compete with the loud music.
@@JanHowell thanks. But I meant to ask: what type of needle are you using in the video? At the beginning of the tutorial, you'd say there are 5 types of needles. Thank you again.
People like you who make simple, informative tutorials like this are absolute saints. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome

You are so kind. Thank you. I am so impressed that you continue to sew. LOVE IT!
That herringbone stitch/stretch stitch is so helpful!! Thank you for posting this!
You are so welcome!
It’s always nice to have a refresher course. I haven’t had sewed for awhile. Also I didn’t know that was a stretch stitch. Thanks for the demo.
How did you learn originally?

Wasn’t taught in “Home Economics”, or was skipped? Did your family women not pass it on? (Or father)

I agree. Love having hand work while doing other things.
You have greatly helped thank you. I have a sewing machine I just haven't learned how to use it. I crochet and for lining I prefer to hand sew.

@@JanHowell I’m attempting to do that stretch stitch now- I’m making a stretch hat with satin lining. OMG 😳 LOL Thanks again

The back stitch was the first stitch I learned from my mom
Wonderful
Thank you! I am 64 and gave been sewing since I was about 10, but have never been shown any hand stitching except how to sew on a button. Very helpful!
Could you use the cross stitch on fabric that’s not stretchy? I love that style
Sure, however it's not going to make it stretchy.
I love sewing by hand I still make my quilts that way also. I take my machine out as a last resort
Great tips thank you!
I use to do embroidery and the third stitch is close to a crisscross stitch. The second one I use to call a chain stitch.
Thank you very much .❤ Would you do a video on how to make a pattern and how to sew a simple top with needle and thread?
Thank yoouuu!! I decided to hand sew my knit fabric coz my sewing machine can’t.

Have you tried making the knot bigger. You can also just take several small stitches at the beginning instead of using a knot.
I am 10 years old now I wanna design dresses❤
Go for it girl!!!!!
Love it
Nice content 👍👍👍
Get the basic skills available to the people! Today’s families don’t have people to pass skills down to their family.

The herringbone is a little harder. 😊
yes it is
Thank you. Lots of good tips here. Now to explore the different types of needles. What is your favorite type for the stitches you demonstrate here?
I love all of them, but find the stretch stitch so helpful when sewing on knit fabric.
@@JanHowell thanks. But I meant to ask: what type of needle are you using in the video? At the beginning of the tutorial, you'd say there are 5 types of needles. Thank you again.
What is the name of that fabric you’re using ?
