Very nice to have older men learning to hand sew. Thank you for your tutorial. Beginner hand sewer, here. Electric sewing machines intimidate me, so I’m learning about hand sewing, while saving up for either a hand cranked or a treadle sewing machine. UPDATE: As of yesterday, I’ve brought home an antique treadle sewing machine. Singer Model 12, made in 1877. The elderly gentleman who sold it to me even sat at the machine & showed me that it worked. First thing I did was take all of the thread out & learn how to thread the shuttle, thread up the machine & the needle, today I will thread my bobbins. This treadle sewing machine only does a straight stitch, so, learning all the other stitches will need to be done.
I want to thank you so very much. You are the ONLY one on the whole internet teaching this the way we might have learned from our grandmother. Your instructions are thorough and historically accurate (I'm confident you are). No one explains the way you do. I have been buying books, even vintage early 1900s books written for school teachers. But your videos cannot be beat. What a great gift this is. Thank you for your careful teaching and demonstration. I will watch every video over and over, while practicing. Please do more !
You are a gifted teacher. Well done. Thank you for not having annoying background music. Thank you for getting right to the instruction, for your clear explanations, and for beginning at the beginning.
I appreciate it! It is one of my favorite tools. It is (as you know) so vital if you’re going to construct clothing with needle and thread. I’ve gotten to a point where I really can’t sew without it. All the best to you!
Love your defence of hand sewing!! :) I hate machines & don't own one, so hand sewing it is. Only, most people seem to think hand sewing is for crazy people only, or those with way too much time on their hands, both annoying attitudes. As you say here, hand sewing came first, machines only after, in fact a lot after, as *everything* was hand-sewn up to about 1860!
My grandma recently passed away and collected thimbles, which the grandchildren are getting. Thank you for demonstrating how to use it so I can remember her each time I put it on. ❤️
Remember that this is only one way of using the thimble. Many, many people push the needle with the top of the thimble, not the side. You get much more "power" this way.
I’ve moved to Singapore and couldn’t take my sewing machine, serger and all the paraphernalia I have at home, with me. I miss making clothes and thought it would be a challenge to sew something entirely by hand. You’ve given me hope that I can do it. Going to give it a try. Very excited. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for this. I want to be able to be mobile when I'm sewing. I also figure humans went without a sewing machine for so long, why do I 'need' one. So happy to have found your channel!
You’re welcome, that is fantastic to know. Hand sewing is so great to move around with. You are so right- It’s how people sewed for longer than a sewing machine has been around. I’m so glad you found my videos. Happy sewing!!
Been doing leather work for some years but when the little one asked if i could sew her Halloween costume that she accidentally ripped i had to turn to youtube. Watched a couple videos but this one was amazing and i felt like heart and soul went into it. Im no expert after watching it, but i feel great that my daughter has a mended costume 🙂
Thank you for finally showing me the secret to my grandmother’s even stitches 🤣! Whenever I’ve had to do a little hand sewing, I would try and try to get my stitches small and even like hers were, to no avail. When you explained how to get backstitches even, I understood how she did it, especially when you showed your finished stitches!!!
5:04 Knotting the thread-this is the most helpful sewing hint since I can remember. I've been bumbling along for decades, not knowing this wonderful, simple, time-saving tip! Thanks for saving me oodles of time!
I was in my (eek!) forty’s when I learned “hand sewing” was “couture!” Wish I knew that back in my Barbie cloths making days. I was quite good. And this is when I fell in love with the Art ❤️
What a surprise to find the first two comments I see also from guys. I've worked with my hands all my life as a woodworker and other various crafts and being curious and self sufficient I thought I'd check this video out. I hear so often people putting down the young people of today, videos like this are proof that there are plenty of young people doing cool things. Keep up the good work. You are so right, hand work does connect us all.
I have nothing but thank you's for your excellent video! I'm a 68-year old male retired teacher, who has been sewing, knitting, and crocheting since I was 13, but I learned a couple of new things from you: knotting thread so easily, and using a thimble, as you illustrated. I deeply appreciate your information, since I just started back sewing. Bless you for the beautiful gift that you have!
That's so funny I just read a comment above just like mine. For a 50-year-old dude who's never learned to sew You've been my first sewing teacher! Now I can sew back the bottom halfs of my half shirts that I used to think were so trendy. Haha!
Thank you.I loved how you paused to collect your thoughts. You didn’t act silly or edit it out. Thank you. This certainly has encouraged me to do more by hand just for the calmness of it. Thanks again.
I have been hand sewing for years but you taught a better way to do the hem stich and back stich I like sewing by hand even tho I have a sewing machine thankyou for sharing this
I got a set of new reusable masks the other day that didn't have a wire across the nose and I had to drive a co-worker across town. I could barely see bc my glasses fogged up! So I'm hand sewing bias tape on them that the wires slide into and I always come to Sarah first to have my memory refreshed on how to sew!
You're right about people in public being fascinated with hand sewing or crocheting. I usually crochet while waiting to see the doctor, and once I looked up to see everyone watching my hands as if they were all hypnotized. It was funny and cute. BTW, what you call a hem stitch, my mother called a running stitch but her hem stitching was different in that the stitches that show on the right side were tiny and hard to see because she only picked up 2 or 3 threads. It takes longer but looks nice.
Hello! I just found your channel. I am a mom that would like to learn how to hand sew. I just learned a little bit from watching my mom, but couldn't learn more as she passed away. Anyways, could you do more videos for beginners and things that a beginners can start sewing? Thank you for your patience and easy instructions.
I am really excited to hear you are interested in hand sewing. Have you had a chance to look at my other tutorials? They are all geared to beginners. I also have several workshops for beginners at www.sewncompany.com. What projects are you interested in?

My goal last year was to improve all my sewing skills: sewing clothes and embroidery. So I watched this video about a week ago and I did my first sewing today. I had a strap on a dress break and so I sewed it up. Thank you for showing me how to do it.
I'm 67 and learned sewing in school, hand and machine sewing. I had a treadle sewing machine at home. If I need tension hand stitching , I single pin the fabric onto a cushion on my lap and then sew, moving the pin as needed. Works great for hemming, or any stitch.
I'm so happy I found your channel. I have big interest in hand sewing. I love to hand sew my own clothes but I feel I need some guidance since I feel my stitches doesn't look as good as I wish. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you for the reminder of how to do this. How to hide the thread tail demonstration near the end is fabulous. Keeping it neat and tidy is always my preference.

So happy to have found this video in particular. Wish I'd known about your videos over two years ago by now. I had a sewing teacher pair of women who were absolutely the wrong fit for me, and things went downhill for me because of a few arguments with my mom regarding an incident between myself and one of the two women. Really it was mild and not a big deal, my mom and the woman just thought I was deliberately ignoring or being dismissive of her in the grocery store at the checkout aisle of all places, when really I was just distracted by unloading the cart onto the register because there was another customer behind us so I was distracted. I wasn't don't anything wrong, but I was the bad guy and it was like the last straw for me because I'd already gotten sick of sewing because I wanted to do more than what they were teaching, and I needed help a few times at home but mom couldn't help me, so I just gave up on sewing for a long while. I think if I'd had your videos back then, I would have gotten back into sewing much sooner because you explain things so well. Keep the videos coming please - I'll definitely watch them even when I'm not sewing anything because it's just fun and relaxing for me to watch stitching videos
So glad this is helpful to you and is getting you back into sewing! The teacher definitely matters for hand skills. Sorry you had a frustrating experience! Hope you enjoy the videos on the channel! Happy sewing!!

I've been wanting to learn how to quilt and start my own business with quilts and I don't have the funds for a sewing machine, these videos are so nice to watch and so easy to follow. Thank you for uploading these 🥰
I developed a love for sewing when I was 9 years old. My mother showed me how to make a dress for my doll. It turned out so terrible but I thought it was pretty.
@@sewncompany No that was 1972. LOl. My siblings thaught it was very ugly but they were trying to be nice not to hurt my feelings and said it was pretty. Mean while the doll was in bad shape as well. I must have washed her hair 100 times. We had a large family 7 kids. And not alot of money I got a new doll once a year for Christmas. I made that dolls dress from old clothing.
@@bargeld09 omg the hair! My poor dolls had rats nests. It’s funny how I loved to play with their clothes but I never made them clothing. I think my mom still has her old Barbie’s with some of her and my aunts dresses they made. I remember they were pretty rough around the edges.

Thank you for your great advice. I was stitching hexes and my wrist constantly was hurting and didn't realize there was a way to hold your needle in place.
Can you do a video focusing on using a thimble? - especially the movement of transferring from the push of the needle to regripping the needle on the other side of the stitch and placing the butt of the needle upon the thimble.
This is really cool thanks for making a video like this. Just got into hand sewing and made some very uh rudimentary curtains lol so I will be putting the stitches I learned in this video to use next time I make something.

I love hand sewing, and knitting, and quilting etc., etc. You give some very clear instructions and great at encouraging people to try it.
You had me at "very easy to transport"!! I live in a very small space with a toddler and I can't pull out the sewing machine and I'm always afraid that the baby or the dog finding something on the floor and putting it in their mouths. I can't wait to learn hand sewing and do small projects. Thank you!
Thank you for being so clear and easy to follow in your instruction. I really appreciate you!❤
Great videos. I've watched some a few times. I think it's cool that you reiterate, "what your hands can do." Thanks for sharing such great information.

I've been wanting to learn how to quilt and start my own business with quilts and I don't have the funds for a sewing machine, these videos are so nice to watch and so easy to follow. Thank you for uploading these 🥰
You’re welcome! Good luck with your quilting business!! Very exciting!!
Thank you. I always wondered how to make the knot!
I developed a love for sewing when I was 9 years old. My mother showed me how to make a dress for my doll. It turned out so terrible but I thought it was pretty.
That’s such a great memory! Do you still have the doll dress?
@@sewncompany I wanted a new dress for my doll and my mother could not by a new one so she suggested to make one but I guess to teach.me something she had me do it.
Thank you for this amazing tutorial I’m trying to sew a doll dress for my niece I’ve been practicing and it’s very relaxing

Can you do a video focusing on using a thimble? - especially the movement of transferring from the push of the needle to regripping the needle on the other side of the stitch and placing the butt of the needle upon the thimble.
