    Excellent! I learned something. I've been painting for 40 years and I am always learning and I studied under some truly great masters, Pearlstien and others. Thank you! Thank God traditional painting is coming back Max Ginsburg and Irwin Greenberg always spoke of how someday it would return.

    Very interesting. The golden mean is tied to the nature of a Fibonnacci sequence also. You can draw a "golden curve" within your divisions of the golden mean and the end result would be the spiral of a Nautilus shell. Very cool stuff.

    This is an excellent lesson. Thanks so much. I know the rule of thirds and may never get more complicated than that. Or, maybe I will. You made a topic that seems too complex easy to understand. I wish I could paint on linen canvases manufactured by the top of the line companies, but cost is an issue. I will try this on my cotton canvases that are definitely not golden mean.

    Interesting. I'm going to do 2 things. 1) start a painting using the grid of Golden Mean, and see how I like it & how in influences decisions.... then 2) Take a painting I like from my past, and see how close it is to the Golden Mean.

    I cut canvas panels to the golden ratio on a table saw.
    They need gesso!
    My framer often has left over cuts and will make inexpensive frames for me.

    Wow, I bought some canvas boards that are 14x8 and I don't remember where I bought them but I didn't understand why I don't like the 12x8's that I ended up buying. I don't even want to paint on them. The wider boards just looks right for some reason.
    Now I know why.
    Thanks

    Hello Stefan, I'm writing to say thank you, and inquire into your interest in providing online training/mentoring. My thank you is for putting your lectures on TH-cam. I have been working my way through them, and decided to try and apply some of techniques you have spoken of, so I went out to my local river bank and took some pictures (yes I'm a photographer/digital artist which I know is not your favorite, but it is who I am for a variety of reasons which I would be happy to share with you at some point). When I took these pictures I was thinking about your lessons on the Golden Mean, Eye Magnets and Central Focal Point. The time of day was late morning and the natural lighting was less than dramatic, and the early spring colors were somewhat muted. When I got the picture home I did some extreme editing. First thing I did was make the image extremely dark, recalling your comment that lighting/light should only be 5% - 10%. Once I had the image dark, I then began to 'light' what was going to be the central focal point, in this case just a patch of grass. I also brought out the colors so the grass appeared much greener in the focal point. Once I had this done I attempted to highlight Eye Magnets in a circular pattern to bring people around and back to the CFP.
    I took this image and posted it on Fine Art America (a online printing and framing portal with community features etc) just to see what people’s reaction would be. Well in 3 days I have sold 2 prints (which is as fast as I have sold anything there) and have the image published in three groups. This indicated your information is excellent! THANK YOU! The only negative feedback was from a friend who mostly commented on my blithe description. I am looking forward to doing more work with these techniques. I know the 'painterly' effect used on the image is a cheap trick, but the image did not feel right as a 'photograph' to me, so this effect is what I went with.
    Here is a link to the image on FAA.
    fineartamerica.com/featured/springs-arrival-karl-fritz.html
    I’m not sure if you are interested in providing critiques of work I do because of the medium I am working in, if you do have interest let me know a good time to call and we can discuss it further. I am interested in both creative/craftsmanship (I thought perhaps still life similiar to some of your online classes) and business where applicable.
    Sincerely
    Karl Fritz

    Where is a good place to purchase masterpiece canvases at a reasonable price? As in which website I mean. I dont think any stores around me sell them. Also one more question that I cant seem to get an answer to.. Can I paint with acrylics on an oil primed canvas? Why or why not? And if not, what exactly would happen to my painting if i did? Thank you for your time.

    I think really good artists don't need to lay down lines on the canvas, they just simply know what's right to do and they go ahead and do it ..

    • @DRPIreland
      @DRPIreland 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jayoyster I disagree. As Stefan says, the Golden Mean was used by many of the greatest artists of the past. Their paintings hang in our museums and still inspire awe because they are so esthetically pleasing. None of those artists would tell you today that being a good artist means you simply know what's right and go ahead and do it. Some may have internalized it, but first they learned it by doing it.

    If you were making your own frames and boards, would it not be better to start with a ratio like 29 x 17.92, then add, say .25 for framing for a total size of 29 x 17.9 when framed? Not suggesting it is necessary, but where doing one's own work why not have the actual exposed canvas precisely the GM?

    Can you somehow apply golden mean measuring as you did on the 18 x 29 on a 20 x 16?

    • @DudeNumberOnePlus
      @DudeNumberOnePlus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Thomas Basically yes, the ratio of the sides does not matter, thats a myth. Place the main attraction in the golden ratio of the canvas, and do secondaries in golden raio proportion to the primary object. Keep the compostition simple, if you want to get feel and understandig for it, forget the grid. Work from bigger and more important objects to smaller object of lesser importance.

    The phone sides are industry standard 16:9 screen, which isnt 1.168... same goes for modern TV's. Also, the sides of painting do not have to be fi, its myth that started probably during the baroque period. I personally find the format too constricted, the outdoor sceneries require the image to be bit wider, for portratits its too narrow. The image format should be adjusted to the composition.
