Back in days when ANY (alleged) misconduct from the social norm, brought shame and ruin to entire families. I particularly have empathy for the sisters, who never married. They probably never moved away or changed their names or were given any money or permission to do so, by their tyrannical father.
Interesting as I was watching the British 1950 film "Madeleine" on TH-cam last evening! Exceptional film with Ann Todd portraying Madeleine Smith and is "based on the actual story". I am thinking that she was actually guilty. Scotland (as with England) the Upper Classes were always protected from consequences of their sometimes abhorrent behavior. Ruining a "good family's" name in society in order to give justice to a poorer, "inconsequential species" of humanity (especially if a "foreigner") was unfortunately, the way things were in societies of Europe and the USA as well.
What a coincidence! I saw that movie last year and didn’t realize it was based on a true story, until I recently stumbled upon her story. There definitely was a power balance that gave Madeleine an advantage during the trial.
What do you think? Was Madeleine Smith innocent or guilty?

Interesting in that I literally just watched the British film "Madeleine" (1940s) on TH-cam last night!

The narrator bored me.
