@@shadowlycan2929 Yes Emerl was on the Ark. Gerald found him, and was experimenting with it while working on project Shadow. The government found out, and forced him to give them Emerl. Emerl then went berserk, and destroyed most of the Ark, which is why its still falling apart in present day.

I was blown away with how great the teaser looked. It’s awesome to see SEGA and Sonic Team revisit Shadow’s backstory again and provide us with new details and callbacks. Such as seeing Emerl attacking the Ark uncontrollably like as described in Gerald’s diary in Sonic Battle. And the animators are doing an amazing job with the visuals and effects. I’m super excited to see the full 3 episodes of Dark Beginnings later this Fall.
I think the Ultimate Lifeform quote that Shadow said to Sonic at the end of SA2 was a matter of him showing respect, which is a side of Shadow I want to see return (Shadow in SA2 wasn’t an anti-hero but a misguided person who became a villain because of Gerald messing up his memories, and when his real memories return, he becomes a hero). I also think that the quote represents the mural in Hidden Palace Zone, foreshadowing Dr. Robotnik fighting Sonic. Gerald created Shadow through what would be Sonic’s future existence. Sonic is the organic Ultimate Lifeform, while Shadow is the synthetic Ultimate Lifeform.
Sonic isn't the ultimate life form at all, he has nothing to do with the ultimate life form, he doesn't have immortality and immunity to illnesses, so he can't be the ULF. That he is the main character doesn't mean he should have it all. You Sonic fanboys are so annoying. You just can't stand the fact that Shadow has something that Sonic doesn't, do you? The whole ultimate life form thing belongs to Shadow, that's his story, not Sonic's, deal with it already.

7:20 My headcanon is that Shadow doesn't need sustenance, because he's an artificial lifeform, like Vision, so if he eats it's because he wants to. And his air shoes are internaly wired so he can't take the off.
Wait, but he takes the shoes off in the Riders Series to swap for alternatives made for the race like Sonic does.
I think because he's still an animal, he still needs food and water, he's just more durable and immune to illnesses.
Maria and Gerald are back in the games after like 19 years, it seems like they’re genuinely trying to improve on Shadow’s writing, Shadow’s sort of got his own new game finally, and is gonna be the big thing for the third Sonic movie. It is a good year to be a Shadow fan right now
I’d say they’re both the Ultimate Lifeform. If the only criteria is surviving a fall from space, then both passed with flying colors. However, Sonic took it far better than Shadow did, which might just show the fact that Sonic had more experience than Shadow at the time of their fall to Earth. Furthermore, Shadow WAS designed off of a mural of Super Sonic in Angel Island. I’ve seen fan theories showing how Sonic is the actual Ultimate Lifeform.
Well I think in the Archie comics it was talked about how Sonic was the personification of chaos so it would make sense that he was destined for that
I think at the end of the day Sonic represented what the Ultimate Lifeform was meant to be. A beacon of hope for humanity. Meanwhile Shadow is the Ultimate Lifeform in a literal sense, being someone immune to age and disease.

6:30 I don’t think they intended for heroes to exist at all, adventure 2 was, as far as the team was concerned, the last game sega would ever make, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy, with the commercial failure of both the Saturn and Dreamcast. The only reason they didn’t was because the CEO died and his money was left to sega, which allowed them to survive as a 3rd party company.
Since Emerl is long dead by the time of Generations I don't think Shadow was chasing him or he'll be a playable character. Feels like Black Doom is messing with his memories and Emerl is a part of Shadow's history getting mixed in with that. With Flynn writing and Evangelion their inspiration I expect only the most headfucky of plots.

That’s a good point about Emerl being dead, but the game is about time travel.
They almost didn't put Sonic Rivals and Rivals 2 on the timeline, and Shadow had story modes in them good ones too like he bonded with Metal on one.
Plus Rivals is how everyone knows Silver in the current timeline

The thing nobody seems to understand with the timetable is: On the timeline there are two rows one for video-game appearances (SA2 -> Battle -> heroes etc.) and one for show/series appearances (Sonic X -> sonic boom -> prime) which are all not really inside of canon but if you want more of shadow you can watch those
It's also labelled as 'A brief history of Shadow the Hedgehog', meaning that not every single game or external media Shadow appears in is gonna be represented, it's just what SEGA thought were the most important or well-known, could be either/or) to show in the panel.
I noticed the animators forgot to draw his sharp teeth, but I don’t think he had them in sa2 so you could headcannon that he chipped his teeth in the biolizard fight
I think it's just an artstyle thing. Sonic has sharp teeth in Adventure for example.
I think the animation of shadow dark origin looks amazing in my opinion.
About the weird cropping... A few seconds into the preview, the footage zooms in on Shadow's face, which at first i thought was intentional but given that everything afterwards looks really claustrophobic and zoomed in i think that might have been a mistake during the livestream. I hope they reupload the clip on TH-cam soon.

At the end of the level as seen in the SGF previews, Shadow says "So what I was tracking was him" referring to Black Doom. So I think he's chasing an unknown signal that he later finds out comes from Black Doom
Thankfully the official sonic channel posted the teaser and thankfully it wasn't cropped and you can actually see shadow's mouth when maria is comforting him. Really wasn't expecting emerl as well

Technically sega isn't retconning anything by having emerl storm the arc while shadow is there. There wasn't any timeline defined between Gerald's journal entries in Sonic Battle, so it wasn't ever known if shadow was awake when he did destroy a lot of the ark. We know that shadow has to have been awakened at least by the 7th journal entry since that's when Gerald talks about the aftermath and maria's death. Emerl's rampage is mentioned in journal entry 6.

I think black doom retconning Shadow’s timeline would make a lot of sense for generations and it would help give people a refresher on Shadow’s backstory whilst also progressing his character.
it's called a brief history. so like they obviously won't include all of his appearancees it also feels like they just feel too bad for forces and 06. there's other appearances his had that aren't on this list too. the boom brand wasn't seen as big of a failure as 06. since the other boom games and the show did decently
This is literally what I'm saying, The brief history of Shadow just shows some of the games and external media Shadow's made an appearance in that SEGA wants to show, so new fans can easily learn and get to understand Shadow as a character before Sonic X Shadow Generations release (I don't know whether that's true or not, it's just my take on this brief history of Shadow)

As a fellow Kirk Thornton Silly Soldier I appreciate you taking a moment to put good word on his name.
It's completely natural to have your own preferences on how any character should sound, even if it's based on nostalgia, but I do think people tend to treat Thornton's Shadow unfairly. Like you mentioned, if you go back to something like Forces where he was given a decent contributing role in the story with a very clear and driven directive, he plays it really well. Honestly, at his best, I like him even more than Griffith's Shadow.
I'm really looking forward to hear what Kirk Thornton can do with this role when given the opportunity to really dig into the character's backstory and emotional side. We've never gotten to see that with this actor!

They did a ton of animation for Warner Bros (especially Tiny Toons, Animaniacs and Batman TAS), tons of Lupin iii, and the movies Akira and Little Nemo in Slumberland.
I think all the Sonic stuff is because they have a partnership with Sega. They’ve worked on other properties (like a few intros for the Saturn) and I even think Marza Planet is a subsidiary of theirs.

I love it. Those seconds between Shadow and Maria are so well done. The teaser does a very efficient job of showing how kind, gentle, and self-faulting Shadow is as well as how strong and dangerous he is.
I don't think we'll be able to fight Emerl in the game; however, I would love to be proven wrong.
I love this and only personally finding out that Keanu Reeves, who is honestly my favorite actor, is voicing Shadow (apparently) in the third Sonic Movie after, coincidentally, people joking that Keanu should voice Shadow because Shadow tends to be associated with guns and Keanu playing John Wick a man who is scarily proficient with guns. It made my day finding that out.

If I recall correctly it wasn't just Shadow that they were unsure would make it to another game after SA2, but the whole series. It was the swansong for Sega's last console and no one really knew what would happen to Sonic afterwards. At least from many fans perspective at the time, SA2 was potentially the last Sonic game and the final credits make a lot more sense if you assume that it was partially expected to be; Rogue says she has something more important to pursue than treasure, and Eggman even feel like he could have stopped being a villain, both of which get backpedaled when Heroes comes out to reset the status quo.
Not that Eggman being the villain is bad, but SA2 felt like it had a sense of finality to the series, the struggle between Sonic, Eggman and the Chaos Emeralds could have ended there without anything major going unaddressed or any suspension of disbelief.

I've already put my extensive view somewhere else, so I'll summarize here.
This animation takes place right before Shadow Generations. What we're seeing here is the past, not the present (relative to the time in universe of course). Black Doom is currently using this to get at Shadow, most likely for the same reasons as 05. This is why we see Team Dark in the poster, and why the glitchy effect that shows Maria's killers (GUN soldiers) is a red hue. It will all tie back to the initial lines said by Shadow in Space Colony Ark Act 1.

I think my main issue with Kirk for so many games is that he sounds more like a stereotypical villain or rival rather than a hero with trauma preventing him from opening up to people. Or even just a serious character in general. The gravely way he spoke was really goofy sounding. He has definitely improved, though.

I feel that Sega wants to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to Sonic 06 because they can go like this game never happened, it technically erased itself. But still include levels and certain elements and references.

I vaguely remember Shadow saying his favorite food was pizza in that one because it was the 2000s food at the time that worked for a favorite that wasn't unlike Sonic's Chili dogs.

Shadow and Vegeta have NOTHING in common. Vegeta is royalty, Shadow is a science experiment. Vegeta is a Family Guy, Shadow is a government agent. Vegeta is an alien, Shadow was created in a space station owned by Earthlings, Vegeta is OBSESSED with surpassing Goku, Shadow doesn't give a hoot about Sonic. Yes, Super Sonic was obviously inspired by Super Saiyan (which was inspired off of Sun Wukong) but that's where the Sonic and DBZ similarities end. There were dark heroes long before Vegeta was introduced, there were time-travel stories long before Trunks was introduced, there were villains who turned good long before Piccolo was introduced, there were characters with regeneration abilities long before Majin Buu was introduced, there were teleportation abilities and stories long before instant-transmission was introduced, and the number 7 is a very spiritual number especially in Asian culture so it's not fair to assume that chaos emeralds were inspired by the Dragon Balls. Harry Potter has the 7 horcruxes and Yu-Gi-Oh has the 7 millennium items, did those franchises copy Dragon Ball as well? And the 7 Deadly Sins in the bible obviously predate the Dragon Balls anyway. And just for the record, the first Sonic game had only had 6 emeralds, and Dr. Eggman was turning animals into robots before Dr. Gero was turning children into robots. Lastly, the creator of Dragon Ball and the creator of Sonic were good friends, so it's only natural for them to borrow ideas off of each other for their own respective creations.
