  • Frank Goya is a renowned bonsai and saikei artist. Watch Frank create a Juniper saikei.
Saikei literally translates as “planted landscape”. It is the art of creating tray landscapes that combine miniature living trees with soil, rocks, water, and related vegetation (like ground cover) in a single tray or similar container. A saikei landscape will remind the viewer of a natural location through its overall topography, choice of ground materials, and the species used in its plantings.

I understand, he is a reserved & speaks in a low tone, but near the end when he was speaking, everyone else was talking as well. This man is a living legend, I would've been hanging on his every word and move. I have learned/found that in this natural artistry( the speaks to all the similar forms) that patience will be your greatest asset, but also listening, and analyzing what was said. I have also learned, happily and respectfully, that the Asian cultures have a lot of meaning/insight/humor/ mystery/foreshadowing/ etc. in there way of speaking, teaching, explaining, and so on. Not sure if that is making sense, but my point I wanted to make is no matter who the presenter is, respect them! If any of these, I assume, non-experienced in the saikei/Bonsai/Etc., crowd go forward and take it up as a recreation, they will then learn, the missed opportunity they had with talking whil this legend was offering/sharing his knowledge. Be well!

This art form was started in Japan by toshio kawamoto after WE2, war conditions made bonsai upkeep near impossible. Saikei was a relatively instant answer(compared to bonsai) to this problem, creating a landscape in hours possibly. The trees would later go on to be bonsai their own right once matured.
