- Evidence found of early civilisation suggests Edinburgh has been inhabited since around 8500 BC. The city boasts a rich history, which is preserved through historic sites such as Edinburgh Castle, the churches of St Giles, Greyfriars and Canongate, and the Holyrood Palace - which is the official residence of the British monarchy in Scotland. If you fancy a day trip to the Holyrood area to visit the palace, no doubt you may want to stop by the impressive Scottish Parliament building for a tour as well!
Edinburgh is home to a number of cultural institutions, like the National Gallery, National Museum of Scotland, and the National Library. You may also be interested to know that Edinburgh’s Old Town and Georgian New Town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Edinburgh is well established as a centre of education in the fields of medicine, engineering, literature, philosophy, the sciences and Scottish law. The highest courts in Scotland are based in Edinburgh. The prestigious University of Edinburgh is one of three in the city and is considered to be one of the best research institutions in the world. It was founded in 1582 and is the fourth oldest university in the country.
Edinburgh is the second largest financial centre in the UK after London, and is the UK’s second most visited tourist destination after London. In July 2022 Time Out magazine named the Scottish capital the most beautiful city in the world.
Outside of London, Edinburgh has the strongest economy of any city in the UK, and the highest percentage of professionals with over forty percent of the population having a qualification at degree or professional level.
Edinburgh is host to a series of festivals which run each year during summer time. The most well known of these are the Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Established in 1947, Edinburgh Fringe is the largest annual arts festival in the world. It is a world-leading celebration of arts and culture, and anyone can participate with any type of performance.
Aside from its renowned festivals, in popular culture Edinburgh is celebrated as the city where the author of the Harry Potter books was inspired to create the legendary character and where most of the Harry Potter series was written.
