    This is EXACTLY what I wanted. Finally, a TH-camr that provides a serious technical comparison of the i7 SP models.
    As a SP 2017 (SP5) owner I am particularly interested with the performance gains I could expect from upgrading to the SP6...despite the weaker 620 graphics of the SP6.

    I like your in-depth review, but I come to a different conclusion. The pro 5 is not only better performing, but also more efficient as it need less wattage to do the same exercises. The pro 6 seems like it allows a higher temperature which is worse for the components but better for heat transfer (which is kind of cheating in this comparison).
    It would be interesting what happens in cpu intensive test.

  • @stevenoconnor5693
    @stevenoconnor5693 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m not so sure would be worth the upgrade and besides gaming on the tablet especially PC gaming is really almost like a no-no as it may be slightly passable it may not be enjoyable little most likely in most cases not. And long term use on a daily basis and depending on the temperature of the room your room and many other variables I could see how this test for sure would be of interest I do appreciate this don’t get me wrong. I don’t own one of these devices but I like technology myself and I always look at the heat limits of a device the limitations technologically of the device on what devices bring to the table.

  • @_Digitalguy
    @_Digitalguy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Cameron, Panos specifically said they have improved the cooling in the pro 6. Also, the iris graphics is no longer made available by intel at this TDP, probably to squeeze in a quad core. So they moved iris to the high wattage chips... Therefore MS had no choice with the i7....Anyway it's always interesting to look at your surface videos!
    I would really like if you could measure fan noise on the 2 i7. SP5 had very low noise but throttled quite a bit. I wonder how the SP6 compares in terms of noise...

    • @cbutters
      @cbutters  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The SP6 fan was definitely quieter and cooled more effectively in my test. I don't have a decibel meter. But if you were to compare, the SP6 is just slightly quieter.

    • @_Digitalguy
      @_Digitalguy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      cbutters Tech Thanks a lot for the info Cameron. The fan on the sp5 was already quiter than on the sp4, let alone. the. SP3... So glad to see that MS is improving every year not only the performance but also the noise emissions... I am very sensitive to noise. I sold my SP3 i5 and went with a HP elite X2 core M7... I’ll wait for the SP7 and USB C to upgrade, but I do want 16GB RAM so the i7 is the only option. Unless they make a surface yoga and if they do I may rather go with that instead...

      It's not, at all. The main issue with the Pro 6 and Surface Go is that both come from Microsoft intentionally tuned to maximize battery life at all costs, even when the computer is running on A/C mains power. You have to make some adjustments to Windows power settings to really get the max performance from the Pro 6.

    I do not understand why you are comparing this for gaming? First and foremost you touched briefly on the crappy SSDs that Microsoft puts in the Pro2017, especially the 256Gb. The speeds are around SATA II which is close to 300MBps for write speeds. Read speeds are, because of the caching mechanism in Windows 10 skewed and should be taken with this caching option off. I would love to see what the SP6 does with regards to the write speeds.

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      " I would love to see what the SP6 does with regards to the write speeds." - I've got a pair of external 500GB SSD's, (Samsung T5's), and one 1TB external SSD plugged into my Surface Pro 6 via the Surface Dock and regularly hit ~450 - 500MBps write speeds.

    For fucks sake, WHO CARES if there is no USB-C! Out of several dozen non-computer USB equipped devices I currently own and use everyday, only TWO are equipped with USB-C ports - My Google Pixel 2XL, and my ASUS Zenpad tablet. So the USB-C ports on my Acer Spin 15 Chromebook? NEVER been used. The USB-C port on my Surface Go? NEVER been used. If Microsoft made any mistakes with the Surface Pro 6 it's that they only put a single USB 3 port - I would have preferred at least 2 USB 3.1 type-A ports, instead of always needing to keep my Surface Pro 6 tied to it's Surface Dock.

      For GPU functions this is definitely true... If you switch to computational tasks; the Pro 6 will cream the Pro 5. It depends what you want to do on the device.
