@@mochipii I do think most people will be secretely grateful they're not in the same position. I feel that way about so many things, whenever I have to picture my life any more complicated than it is already. As Kay said, it's bloody hard work. But your suggestion that people would feel "only pity" is a very limited view, and reality is so much more complex than that. Sometimes, you see these things and feel respect at the steadfast strength of it. Sometimes you just share in the universal human joy of people who love each other. Those things don't go away just because pity can mingle in with them sometimes. What you're projecting here mostly tells me about you, not about them.

I worked in a nursing home all through college and took care of a few people who were public figures that were essentially abandoned by their families. One was a pretty famous guitarist from the 50s and 60s who had dementia. He was a crotchety old man and would spit at everyone, but as soon as someone started playing rockabilly music, he'd start tapping and dancing and humming and being a sweetheart to everyone. I found old videos of him playing guitar and would play them for him regularly, it was kind of like music therapy for him. I fully believe that these poor women were tossed aside and left to be forgotten. Look at how the royal family treats mental issues regarding family members now. Outwardly advocating for speaking to someone, but don't encourage it in their own family so word doesn't get out that they **gasp** aren't perfect.

I worked at a nursing home and music does wonders for the pts. We got ipod shuffles and asked their familes their favorite music, uploaded it and put their names on them. Whenever they would have a problem that was our go to before medication. It worked most of the time. My favorite story is we had a pt who didn't speak and didn't really move. When the Super Bowl came on we had them all up and in the main room. It was the year Lady Gaga performed and when she did, this pt tapped her foot the entire time. Although we may get older and forget a lot, we will always remember our love of music.

It is commonly believed that the mental illnesses that plagued Katherine and Nerissa were inherited from their mother, Fenella, whose family (the Trefusis family), was known for members that were "mad." The other three cousins (Idonea, Rosemary, and Etheldreda) weren't members of the Bowes-Lyon family. They were members of the Trefusis family through their mother, Harriet Fane, who was the elder sister of Fenella Bowes-Lyon.

It's not an excuse I know, but I could not see it happening today. Why judge this family by today's western standards? Even today, in many cultures, such children are not welcomed. Many don't have the financial means & knowledge to care for these children. Many are silently killed off in infancy or abandoned. I am also very sure that with the convenience and quality of pre-natal testing nowadays, many such fetuses were aborted even in western societies.
What about the aged parents being abandoned in nursing homes? These are the people who brought the children up. Maybe you can do something for them? Unlike these children who fortunately or unfortunately are happily unaware, the aged parents are very much aware of their abandonment and emotional pain.

Shocking now, but back in the day (and when I say day NOT all THAT long ago) it was very common. Just a very few years prior to my birth in 1977, most everyone that was "different" were sent to these asylums or convalescent homes and mandatory sterilized. Were I born only 5yrs before I would have been put in one of these places simply due to my epilepsy and ADHD issues and not because my parents were barbaric or anything of the sort...it was COMMON PRACTICE and accepted as the only way to deal with ppl who were not classified as "normal" or healthy. It is terrible how these women were treated. The video does point out that it's only recent times that attitudes towards mental health and physical/mental development issues have changed. People were still sent to asylums, mental hospitals, and the like into the 1960's and 70's. Also upper class families make up just so many people in society. A larger percentage of patients are people in lower and middle class families because it's not just rich families that had this attitude. So while you 100% can criticize how the Bowes-Lyon cousins were treated, there are people in this comment section who act like there probably aren't hidden relatives in their family trees for the same reason. Maybe the real criticism should be how society as a whole treat people and not just one segment of society because this happened to a LOT of people across the socio-economic spectrum.

I am from the UK 🇬🇧 and hate that all this money is spent on something so useless for this present time, the monarchy are a waste of space and have no problem being above other people rich and poor divide has never been bigger , watching poverty and doing nothing about it. Also has anyone heard the story’s of the naked person climbing down from the palace window years and years ago? The queens picnic, where children went missing?
Another story, a friend who works in a hospital met Prince Andrew years ago and he approached a top surgeon of that time at the hospital, he went on to question if he was doing his job properly and be very stuck up and rude to this surgeon.

@Lilac Grey No, they cannot end poverty. If they could they would. They can't just wave their wands and fix Britain's problems. That's not how it works.
Also, the Queen can't sell her crown because a.) It's not hers, b.) It's priceless and historical and c.) Even if she did, what would she do with the billion or so pounds? The government spends billions like it's nothing on things like Social Care, and that is not enough money to save people. The money wouldn't belong to her, and even if it did, it would be her money to spend how she likes. It wouldn't be anyone's decision on how to spend it but her. It is the government, with more power than the Queen, 's job to solve poverty, and they haven't. Because it's a huge ask. How are the royals ever going to solve poverty if they sell the Crown Jewels off? How?

If a family wants to keep something private from the public eye, that is their choice. Were they supposed to make a press conference? They were not in line, so there was no legal obligation to disclose. The queen’s family with public duties have a duty to disclose information that may impair their ability to carry out such duties. Anything else is personal and private. The public have to stop acting like they have a right to every detail of any public figure - that is a recent and warped concept that only serves to embarrass or destroy people.

Yes, BUT, we PAY FOR THEIR PARTY, so that gives us MORE rights than just "regular" folks in the public eye. If YOUR taxes don't pay for them, fine. OURS do. There is/ was ALSO another cousin with mental disabilities that ended up in Salmo, B.C., Canada, who also "ceased to exist". The local folks were NOT impressed with the Queen/ royal family over this. No idea if she is still alive - likely not. That's what you get when you procreate with your close relatives over centuries. Cheers!

I found out from investigating Prince Philip's family that there is one cousin of his, Tatiana Mountbatten, who was sent to a mental institution in 1970 to spend the rest of her life there. I had never heard of her until I read an article about her in a recent issue of Majesty magazine. Apparently, only five people attended her funeral in 1988. I never remember any Mountbatten family member ever mentioning her name. It was like she never existed. Fortunately, her nephew, David, did call his daughter Tatiana, I guess, as a way of honouring her legacy. If she were to be born today I believe that her family would acknowledge her existence.

Did these people not feel compassion back then or have a heart? Not talking about the royal family just humans as a collective. A lot of bad things happened in the past that shouldn't of happened and nobody did or said anything to stop it and be like "maybe disabled people are humans too, maybe we shouldn't be treating them like this" all those people locked away and forgotten about, being abused, tortured, sterilised 💔 treated like they were monsters or seen as sin and it wasn't that long ago if you think about it, one of these sisters were still alive until 2014 age 87
