That’s exactly the reason I stopped watching roadkill. They released an episode a few years ago where they dropped a hellcat motor into their beat up charger and still tried to pass it off as a real roadkill episode, that was the last time I watched them
Derek, really enjoyed your 350 build. The first time I tried to rebuild a motor was on a 1971 Vega. I removed the old (Aluminum Duke) to convert to an (Iron Duke). We did not have much money and my father and mom had divorced and mom needed that little car to run. Long story short. I got it rebuilt but didn't know anything about adjusting valves so I had very little compression. It ran but very badly. Well, I graduated H.S. and left to go to school in Texas and mom still had that car. She sold it to a mechanic who discovered the issue with the valves. Within a few hours, he came back to my mom's house and gave the rest of the money to her and told her, "whoever rebuilt that motor did a great job, I only had to make a small adjustment to the valves and she has great compression now and runs like a brand new car!" Mom is gone now and it has always been my regret that I had made that mistake about the valves. TH-cam was not around back in those days but it would have been great to have Vice Grip Garage to clued me in the right direction. Thanks for your channel....

Had to come back and watch some of your original material. So much has changed in just 4-5 years. The first video I watched was the interior work you did with your wife in your garage. I think I even gave it a thumbs down. I didn't understand your humor. No one was doing auto restoration like that, and I thought it was just a joke. And now look, you're a mega YT star with your own TV show. Pretty skoo-kum dude!
Some of your older videos were on a more serious tone like this one. I keep waiting for the zingers or some tool to go flying across the shop floor. But it clearly allows or exhibits the fact that you know exactly what you are doing, and that's cool that you are sharing it with the rest of the class here. Ride safe!
Appreciate the knowledge and common sense along with clean videos. Trying to get my 10yr old into engines, your pg presentations are just what we need. Great job. 👍🏻
Excellent how you organize everything and give steps on how to complete. Have learned so much on how to start up dead cars and am getting ready to take the plunge on an old truck soon.

Hey Derek, I just discovered your channel while sitting home sick for the last two days. While it's very entertaining watching you get something running that's been dead for a decade or three, I actually got some learnin' with this one. I've got a boat with two "dead" Mercruiser 5.7 motors that have over 2000 hours and never rebuilt. Rusted out and seized, the cylinders look like someone boiled salt water inside, all around not great shape. Decided to rebuild them but I'm not an engine guy so I've been watching videos for two months trying to learn how these come apart, go together, and spin when it's back together. This video really is one of the best.
brother, i absolutely LOVE the simplicity of your videos... i can do anything on the outside but have always been kind of scared of a rebuild... after watching your videos, i think i’m going to take on the rebuild of my 69 impalas tired out 350... and i also love how you describe shit too, sounds like every other normal wrench turner out there...
Best thing to do with your kids is let them help out ,, give them a junk engine around the time they are strong enough to twist the wrench and let em have at it, tear it down without worrying about hurting anything kids now a days don't even know which end the engine is in or which bathroom to use. always like it when you have your kids in the shop, like the KISS methord of doing things......WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 25k subs ..think i was in at around tenth or so

This is rocket science to me. At 73 years-old and 22,000 pilot hours I can work as a pilot-mech on radial engines changing cylinders and rough engine work in the field (Africa/Asia/S.America), but I don’t know squat about engines like this. I do know when someone knows their s**t, and you are a pleasure to listen/watch. Thanks!
Hey man love the channel really like your down to earth old school way of going about building engines a lot of what you do is the same tricks my Dad taught me he was a old muscle car guy building engines in the 70s , Keep up the great work and I'm gonna keep watching brother !
Just found this channel and subbed. I love this guy. A man after my own heart. Essence of this channel is "That'll buff out", "She'll run", "Pile of parts", and "slap her together and send it". Funny to watch so many of your videos and watch the first episode only after I have seen at least 20 other episodes. I am convinced that you have the talent and the skills to make it big. Keep doing what you are doing and take advantage of this COV19 mess as much as you possibly can! Offer live streams more frequently knowing that you can grow your audience significantly in a VERY short period of time if you take the time to do just that. Who does this today on the major networks for gear heads? NOBODY!

At first i thought i clicked on the wrong channel. The thoroughness and seriousness caught me by suprise!! Very well done. We all need to pass on knowledge to the next generation. Ive built too many small blocks to count buy each one i still measure everything,,actually too much because im OCD. Dont know how much it helps. Great video. I just miss the humor only you can do!!

I wish to God I would have had someone to show me what you are doing now when I was a young man! Keep up the great work. Remember nothing is stupid or boring ... I personally will watch all you videos 10 times.. and I work on cars everyday! Great that you are teaching you son ! I did not have a dad like you! Rock on Bro!
Thanks Robert, appreciate it very much
10 bottles of Black Velvet? You are the most entertaining of all the guys doing this kind of videos and there are many other very watchable and enjoyable shows on the Tube. Thank you.
thanks for watching & commenting, glad you enjoyed
Ride safe!
Who’s watching in 2024?
I am!👍
Dang near 2025! Just got a 350 didn't even know VGG had a vidjeo about it!

Derek this was the first video I seen from you. Amazing to see where you have come after such a short period of time. Congrats bud.
I am 78 years old and I aged alot faster than you did, old sub, thanks for blast from the past !
I really appreciate you Derek, with loads of respect. Fan 4 life
Appreciate the knowledge and common sense along with clean videos. Trying to get my 10yr old into engines, your pg presentations are just what we need. Great job. 👍🏻
Thank you John, glad you're enjoying and you're doing the dad thing right!
I have to admit as a kid from Dewitt Nebraska “home of the vise grip” I love this channel and very addicting
(
Thank you Neighbor! Don't miss the car show June 29th so I can meet you. I'll be announcing it this weekend!
Excellent how you organize everything and give steps on how to complete. Have learned so much on how to start up dead cars and am getting ready to take the plunge on an old truck soon.
Just realized this must have been the first video I ever watched on this channel. The C10 burnout in the intro led me to watch ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS
I saw crap tools and was like hey, this might be for me
Budget 😎✔
@@ViceGripGarage Speaking of budget. I'm trying to find the same set of alum heads you were describing for a little over $500 delivered. (That was for a pair of heads right?) All I could find in complete assembly was high $700+ for a pair of heads. Can you give more info or location for the same set you got? Thank you. Great job on the videos!!
@@larrylewis6725 theyre on ebay my dad bought a set
@@ViceGripGarage Derek! Love these DIY tutorials. Any chance you could do one for carb tuning and TH350/400 rebuild too?
@@larrylewis6725 don’t cheap out on heads you won’t regret it
I’ve almost watched every single video of yours. Would love to see another engine build soon.
Hey Derek, I just discovered your channel while sitting home sick for the last two days. While it's very entertaining watching you get something running that's been dead for a decade or three, I actually got some learnin' with this one. Keep up the fun stuff, and more engine build vids would be cool. Cheers!
Definitely one of the best instructional quality hands on professional quality work engine build I've seen ., Vice grip garage is top dog on you tube .hands down.. .
Love Chevy!!! 1500.00 for a rebuild with aluminum heads is Cheap. Thanks for the training!!!
Absolutely thanks for watching
Best thing to do with your kids is let them help out ,, give them a junk engine around the time they are strong enough to twist the wrench and let em have at it, tear it down without worrying about hurting anything kids now a days don't even know which end the engine is in or which bathroom to use. always like it when you have your kids in the shop, like the KISS methord of doing things......WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 25k subs ..think i was in at around tenth or so
Thank you James - you're an awesome supporter!
Here in blighty watching anything car based normally stops at top gear on the BBC .
(Of course not watched that since Clarkson and crew left .)
So , to find someone who hits the scrap yards ( Breakers In stars n stripes land ) and pokes at something till it barks ...... bless you .
SOMETHING WORTH WATCHING .
Also ...my only subscription ever .
I did it .
I bloody subscribed .
I may need a Newcastle brown ale now .
I'm so tired of all the Co-Part supercar "rebuilds" on TH-cam. Nobody is ever going to buy that shit. You still aren't rich even if you have a busted ass McLaren. I'm not impressed.
You nailed the concept of the channel!
New sub, I’m binge watching. Had 3 older brothers I was always the brat under the hood or under the car “helping”. Love your channel, sent the bro’s a link too.
oh. and just running a fingernail across the journal will tell you how the surface is. really great to have your son there with you. he will remember these times all his life !
One thing I learned on a budget build I did was maybe get new rocker arms, I broke more than one so I started keeping a couple in my truck tool box, till I got a set of new ones from summit!!! Carry on!!! Derek you and your videos are great, thank you!!!
106 lobe separation. WOW- THATS TIGHT !
Your vid production and delivery have come along ways since this. Great job!
your a fine young man, i am 60 i hope the younger guys will watch you and get some interest
Thank you Kenneth!
Awwww the first VGG video I ever watched. Takes me back
Been building engine's since I was about 9 years old.worked with some of the most respected engine builder's and the best engine builder's ever and ones who built the most prestigious race car engines ever.
Great video. I just did a budget build 350 myself. Thumper cam. Edelbrock Performer intake and carb. Headers from speedway.
Nice
Funny to watch so many of your videos and watch the first episode only after I have seen at least 20 other episodes. I am convinced that you have the talent and the skills to make it big. Keep doing what you are doing and take advantage of this COV19 mess as much as you possibly can! Offer live streams more frequently knowing that you can grow your audience significantly in a VERY short period of time if you take the time to do just that. You are THE BEST channel for any gear head who wants to learn something (in some cases) while getting quality entertainment value and humor at the same time. Who does this today on the major networks for gear heads? NOBODY!
thank you very much sir
Boy this comment aged well...
Thanks for showing us the build I will be waiting to see how it performs and sounds once you drop it in, I wish I had a little more time and money I would like to try out some projects like the stuff you do. I like the cars you have,
I installed this into the 57 chevy, go check out that video. And thank you!!
now this is building a engine on what 90% of us can afford not these engines in the thousands you see on most of these shows. good job! built many just like this back in the 70s/80s
A fella sure was young. Glad I have had the chance to follow you. And watch you grow. Always been a stand up guy.
Making me nervous with those drinks inside the intake.
Overall, great video. Love the straightforward in depth info. Making it easier for the younger guys to get into it.
😂😂
I do my ring gaps 180 apart to keep it simple. Learned that from an old timer. Just another method that works also.
Erik Turner I put one oil ring gap over each end at the wrist pins, for a little more oiling those pins.
At first i thought i clicked on the wrong channel. The thoroughness and seriousness caught me by suprise!!
Very well done. We all need to pass on knowledge to the next generation.
Ive built too many small blocks to count buy each one i still measure everything,,actually too much because im OCD. An old technique passed down to me from a few old machinist is once crank is first laid in the mains i give it a light tap on the counterweight towards the center. Just one tap. Dont know how much it helps. Great video. I just miss the humor only you can do!!
Thank you Michael! As always appreciate your input
This was the first video I ever watched of Derek's. I was looking for info to rebuild my dad's Corvette motor. Been a fancy ever since.
This inspires me more than the power house garage commercialized videos. Very realistic and even tossing his back out made me think I was getting up after putting a wheel on. Total thumbs up.
Another old school trick is to take Vaseline and pack the high volume oil (Earl) pump full by using a drill and the oil pump rod guarantee no dry start. Just sharing a few things I've done over a life time with fellow car guys.
Great tip! I prime with a old drill or dizzy typically
Vaseline is for when your taking a break and your old lady has gone after parts
This video was very educational and interesting!! I appreciate all the information and expertise! Keep up the good work and fantastic builds!
You're my hero Fella ! Got one of those legendary 67 Chevelle four doors I'm gonna be fixin' on. Going to use your frugal budget tips as my blueprint gonna post it on the youtubes too thanks :)
Awesome good luck!
Finally someone who thinks similarly to myself, on building engines at home on the cheap. Thank you sir.
thanks for watching Tony
About 20 minutes in the he starts to loosen up and sling his trademark quips and phrases we've all come to love.
Great video, learned some fantastic techniques. Thanks Derek!
Great video ... you really make it look easy , but give us the confidence to TRY to tackle the build !!!
I hope you do!
I’m glad I’ve stumbled upon this channel amazing video
"10 bottles of black velvet" ahh, those are memories I didnt want back lol
The 307 is a fine little V8! We had a ' 68 Bel Air 4-door, with the 307, and 3 speed automatic. That was a great car, my folks had several years.
Dude. What a biig change. In the biggest most respectable way possible. 👊 when i get bored i go back an watch these videos again. Crazy how far you've come along big guy 👊👊
Would have loved to see what she would have done on the dyno for that price. Cool vid 👍
yeah, maybe next time! she was a peppy engine though
there's very few people that know how to adjust lifters without the engine running or some other trick I'm glad me and you do
I remember being 18 moving to Tennessee and my landlord was a engine builder...I mean redneck with massive knowledge n just watched him for hours doing budget builds for the stockcar guys doing everything from lapping valves polishing cams cranks porting heads right down to custom builds for other customers I always had intrest in engines of smalls n he is what grab my attention to the V-8S now he's passed away and my fond memories of us out there in the shop at midnight (because of the heat of summer) cold snacks n smell of oil gas carb cleaner is always in my nostrils when I go into my shop... THIS episode sure reminds me of him...n look ur in Tennessee now lol 😁
It would be great if you left links to the parts you used in the description! Love the video man
thank you! all ebay junk, links change or get removed often
yeh, but that's why he's telling what parts he uses. So you can go find them like he did.
Can just go to Summit Racing for cam/lifter kits ($104), pistons($110/8), rings, bearings... also Northern Auto Parts kits... enginekits.com... Alex's Parts or Competition Products for S.S. valves ($70/16)...
Your hilarious, when my 4.3 blows I’m swapping a sbc into my s10,definitely will be watching this video for the tips
YT recommends the guy 2 years later. Still iconic, still excellent content.. The guy knows his shit.
