Even in the scene where Cassie just yells "f.ck I am in love with...." in her head, she says "plus you guys were terrible for each other" she subconsciously still thinks he's not the problem. Judging from clips and fragments of this storyline that I've seen, I believe Cassie knew about the abusive tendencies of Nate and was aware of the toll it was taking on Maddy, so she placed herself in that position to discontinue the abuse. (A potential savior complex, perhaps?) Essentially, Cassie views her relationship with Nate as a solution to Maddy's problem; the abuse from Nate. Again, I haven't looked at the series, Euphoria. To explain the whole situation, Cassie has daddy issues. When she was in her early teens, Cassie’s dad got into drug use and she was desperate to get his attention since she was a daddy’s girl. Her dad stopped seeing her more and more even though she craved that attention, affection, and love. Eventually her dad texted her and with her enablence, he stole items from Cassie’s moms house in the middle of the night. Cassie helped him and it was the last time she saw him. Fast forward, Cassie and Maddy are best friends. Maddy has an on again off again relationship with Nate. Nate has physically abused, emotionally and verbally abused Maddy for most of the show from controlling how she looks to choking her. Maddy breaks up with Nate after Nate is confused about his sexuality. Maddy found this out when she found pictures of a male genitalia on Nate’s phone that weren’t his. Later on, Cassie and Nate start to hook up and Cassie is desperate to get his attention as she is dressing the way he wants her to dress, act, etc… That is when this fighting scene picks up

I worked with kids/teens as a counselor too and it was pretty easy to pick up on what sort of relationship was going on and got some insights to what trauma they probably had. I think that speaks to a decent portrayal on the actors' parts and the writers. I've never watched the show (I don't plan to) but I'd guess just based on this scene that both come from pretty bad family backgrounds where the parents didn't display healthy relationships. Cassidy is a classic example of someone with probably abandonment issues probably with a male family member and sleeps with guys to try to make them "stay" to make up for the male that didn't stay. Nate just seems very explosive and very angry and abusive. He probably witnessed warped relationships with his own parents, is trying to find "love" through relationships but struggles to emotionally connect, and I'd guess he was forced to grow up early or deal with grown up mistakes from his parents that he resents being forced to be responsible for. Nate seems like a kid that grew up with a lot of expectations put on him and he is still reeling from the trauma caused by it. How'd I do?

It would have to start with season 1 to show the clips where Nate casually calls Cassie a “whore, to be fucked and kicked to the curb,” not to her face, but to another boy who’s interested in dating her. Clips would also need to show nate and maddy’s established relationship, plus maddy and cassie’s friendship in s1 - as set up for the season 2 clips of the love triangle. At the start of season 2, he found Cassie drunk, took to a party, and they slept together where Maddie almost caught them. It really messed Cassie up and she goes down this spiral of trying to be what Nate wants, all while in secret, until she has some sort of breakdown. Run when you see the red flags because waiting for someone like that to change will waste years of your life... If they ever do. It usually just gets worse when you stop playing. (If you stay)

I was victim #1. It took everything for me not to laugh out loud. I said absolutely nothing but what I wanted to tell him was that his dad NEVER loved me from the outset. I think you should watch Episode 6, the episode after Maddy inevitably finds out that Cassie and Nate were in a relationship, and do an analysis on Cassie. She got a lot of hate this season and to be honest there was a lot of truth in Nate's criticism of her, despite it coming from a toxic and manipulative place but it would be interesting to understand why someone like her would be attracted to Nate beyond the 'Daddy issues' diagnoses (which she does have btw.) Nate was very abusive toward Maddy, a fact that Cassie knew and he was never particularly nice to her either. Is she having love amnesia or does she understand these traits he possesses and want to be with him because of them? Anyways I've asked a lot. Please do watch Episode 6 and make that character analysis.

Because he's popular, and she wants to be like Maddie. Loved by all. She not only wants Nate because of her daddy issues, she likes to be the center of attention. Otherwise, she wouldn't come up on stage and play the victim, so everybody's opinions of her would change. She used to be an ice skater, the centre of attention, and she lost that. Cassie has to try hard to be liked, for Maddie, it comes naturally.

@@bigsistahtips The fact that she used to be an ice skater is actually a really interesting point. Maybe that’s where her need for love in the form of validation and attention comes from, regardless of who it’s from and how safe it is. Maybe that mass form of impersonal love and adoration is the alternative that served her when her parents failed her. It kind of makes me think of Sarah Lynn on a smaller scale. Her and Lexi are different people and different people handle things differently but this could also explain why in contrast to Lexi, she was so willing to seek love and validation from her dad and later Nate even when it was dangerous.

@Kaedi Lorako Khama It wasn't to be liked by everyone or even to get attention from everyone - she even states that she blew up her life for him. He even reminds her that everyone is going to look down on her, which is something she is already very aware of, but is okay with sacrificing to get the one thing she feels she needs. Cassie is just as loved and adored by everyone as Maddie is - the difference is Maddie likes the attention so she can thrive off of it alone. Cassie wants to be loved truly deeply loved by one person because her dad no matter how hard she tried did not love her as he should, and that is super damaging for a person. Something I try to explain often to my partner regarding therapy for his son, as his mom kept his brother but wanted nothing to do with him. It's why Cassie becomes so obsessed with each partner, they become the only thing she eats sleeps and breathes. The lure of Nate has not much to do with his looks or popularity, as she previously hated him. However, when he opened up and became "vulnerable" showing off a different side it made her feel special. Its love bombing in a way. Even Rue narrates that Nate fell in love with Cassie, and so he probably showed it in private moments which would make them special and genuine - even though he was afraid Maddie would leak the tape of his dad. They say the right things do the rights things... in the moment he founded her stranded at the mart she was at a pretty big low after having an abortion previously which was something she did not want to do and then fighting with her sister - the rush of the male attention was probably a big high in that specific moment, and then after that it doesn't take much for them to feed you little crumbs of you being the special one that can save and change them. I have done the same thing thinking I could save or change someone by loving them enough, when in reality people have to accept they need to change and do better - and then want to.
When they go into argument mode and she takes off - he will end up saying what she needs to hear. That she is loved. So the arguing is unfortunately just as big of a high as the love part. Ideally she is a better match for him then Maddie - he has a very alpha personality and she is very submissive... but that would only really work with therapy. Maddie is very alpha herself which is probably a big reason they bring out the worst in each other, and why her and Cassie get along so well. It's sort of like animal herd mentality... two alphas in a herd will end in ones demise which is why we separate our horses. We should be smarter then animals, and we usually are - but it still seems to be an issue. Nate has a need for dominance because of his lack of control because of his dad, and Cassie has a need to feel loved to prove to herself she has worth... so when Nate takes that away from her at the end of the final episode its like cutting a addict off from their source - they snap, which is why she went crazy and got up on stage. She didn't even want their pity she wanted to lash out to release her pain and at the same time transfer it to Lexie who in Cassie's eyes just ruined her love addiction. In the end she lacks self love and self worth as she puts all of it into the hands of others, and gives her power away.

I have a very angry dad, and this is the advice my therapist gave me.
Respond by voicing how you feel from your point of view.
It doesn't feel right, but with people like this, you need to let them know the effect of their actions.
If he starts to insult you, tell him that this really hurts and you wish you didn't have to hear it. If he makes wild accusations, say that this hurts and you don't feel like it's true and that you in your heart wish he didn't think of you that way. If he starts to tower over you, tell him that he is scaring you and that wish you didn't have to feel this way because of him.
At first I didn't believe it would work, but my dad immediately started voicing his frustrations, of course he started to play the victim, but it's much easier to deal with a person in a victim mentality than someone who is bullying you, verbally abusing you or intimidating you.
Each time before I did that, the situation always ended in physical abuse, or verbal abuse when it happened over the phone.
      I hope this helps.

I would love a reaction to each character. Both Nate and Cassie have not had healthy relationships modelled for them. Nate has literally been told he will never be good enough and has had domination drilled into him.
Cassie has learnt being attractive is the be all and end all, and has basically never been single since puberty. Her biggest goal in life is to be loved and doesn't care who by.
Nate may have not owned up to his own faults in that conversation, but he was still pretty spot on with what he said to Cassie. I thought gas lighting meant someone was deliberately making the other person believe something that wasn't wholly true. Oh nooo, you went in cold on season TWO. That's rough. The characters in this show definitely live in fantasy world, can't count how many times this season someone has driven way too fast while way too drunk with zero consequences. It's almost memetic at this point. When there are finally real consequences for a specific character it's pretty freakin heartbreaking though. Meanwhile, Cassie just has problems existing without a boyfriend, but Nate is actually a big personality downgrade from her season 1 guy. People complained that he was in college and she was underage, so it almost seems like her getting with Nate is like the writers going, "Didn't like that? Have THIS!" If you're going to watch any more Euphoria, consider the scene where Kat breaks up with her perfectly good boyfriend who literally did nothing wrong in the most painfully awkward way possible. She somehow meta gaslights him, it's so insane to watch.

I love that it took about a minute of a single scene out of context for you to figure out how terrible Nate is

This makes me terrified to get into an actual relationship. How am i supposed to separate the good guys from the bad guys when they can hide it so well? I was scared for cassie in this scene and i've never seen this show before

As a sexologist, I was very pleased with your take on this scene :) I loved euphoria for the depth of the characters and their complexity, but they definitely all need a little therapy.

little? they need to heal from a whole trauma and conditions, do you know how hard that is? it's like an addiction to stick with the same old routine... it's not impossible, but it's not easy either
