I think Nate freaking out from his dad pinning him down was part projecting from the nightmare he had, and just anger at losing control over his autonomy as control is something he treasures the most

That's what I was thinking... The violence Cal was acting looked almost sexual which would be terrifying to someone with nightmares like that. Nate finding the porn of his dad was in itself abuse. Abuse on top of abuse. Doesn't excuse Nate's behavior but I have empathy for him here.

well Nate’s mother got pregnant because she knew Cal was in love with his best friend and would easily leave her for him. She fully trapped him with a baby so they would be together forever. She thought that doing so would “fix” him, but as we can see, it only spread the disease of unresolved mental health issues throughout his family through secrecy and abuse.

I would advise you to watch a piece from season 2, where Cal is young, as well as how he goes to the bar as an adult. And also Nate as a child where he finds Cal's records (season 1). The story of young Cal explains a lot in his adult behavior. And it is to young Cal that I sympathize that his story has turned out this way.
And I also wanted to say that Nate's mom is far from ideal, to put it mildly (in the second season she had a dialogue with Nate, where she literally approved of his behavior towards women and Maddie).

I started in therapy when my daughter was a year old and I lost control and started screaming at her for crying when I couldn't figure out why. She shut down emotionally for a while and it scared the hell out of me, and I couldn't believe what I'd done anyhow. I went to therapy to figure out how to control my anger and found out I needed antidepressants. Been on those two and a half years and it's the best thing that ever happened to me, and my family. I also continued in therapy to figure out where the anger was coming from and deal with that set of core issues. Spoiler: it was basically shame based, which was based in the mental and emotional abuse I'd experienced for 20 years growing up before I finally got out and married a great person who helped and loved me through everything that followed. I could pretty confidently call us a happy family now. I still have bad days but they are farther between and I've handled my son, who's now six months old, much better than I did my daughter. When I feel myself starting to lose control I've gotten a lot better at asking for help so I can have the time and space I need to get it back. I'm so incredibly glad to be breaking the cycle of generational trauma--because my abuser also had an abusive parent, who also had an abusive parent... We don't know how far back it goes. But it stops here.

it’s so deep how nate didn’t actually needed to be sexually abused to feel abused that way and when his dad physically fought with him he just went CRAZY! the anger response it’s a representation of how hurt he was from all these traumas, he knew how sh*tty his dad was with all those records, he knew his father was cheating and lying and yet he always tried to be protect him, keep the lie, he tried to make his dad proud, be the man but at the same time he was terrified of him and didn’t wanted to be like him, that’s why he held on so tightly to toxic masculinity! and yet his dad tells him he’s a disappointment and is always criticizing him, i just think like nate was a little boy scared and trying too hard inside of this super strong man body with toxic behavior, i just pity him a lot and feel extremely bad for him please give this guy therapy!

He's known his dad is the worst person in the world since he was a kid, and nate wants to be the best and toxic and manipulative not inherently cause his dad keeps demanding that of him, but so one day he can beat that. And In this portion of the show it's after we saw the worst in Nate and how much he controls people. So Nate tries to stand up for himself. He feels like he's on a roll. He feels confident he is the bigger piece of shit. Anddddd he gets his ass taken down to the floor in seconds. Which breaks him, physically, mentally. He cannot cope with the intense emotional feeling that impossible task has, so he channels it physically. That's my theory from one kid with a piece of shit dad to the character

I have a friend from high school who is a couple of years younger than me. His father was married to this woman, and when he divorced her he left his two children with her, I guess he thought they would be better off with a mother, my friend had not idea were his father was, and had been looking for him so he could go live with him. After his father left, he said his stepmother just completely changed. He and his your sister were physically and mentally abused for years by her she even medicated him and his sister for mental illnesses he didn't have, while her own children were treated like little royalty. He is now in his mid-30s, he's a firefighter, and he is a wonderful father and husband. He's like the nicest guy in the world; mild-mannered, respectful, and loyal. He treats everyone with respect and kindness. He calls me about once every year or so and we speak for like an hour or more to catch up on our lives. So yeah, sometimes life gives you a raw deal, but once you grow up, hell, even before that, is up to you what kind of person you become. My friend never once let his abusive childhood turn him into a nasty person.

Cal has a very toxic idea of what masculinity is and therefore taught Nate the same way. In their eyes, their homosexual desires clash with their need to feel like a man. Cal is bitter from having to hide it for years and internalized this homophobia against his own self, and Nate is now going down the same path, angry at Cal and the world that he’s not able to express his desires without his manhood being questioned. Nate is actually in love with Jules, but has not allowed himself to admit it or act on it in a healthy way. He loved Maddy because he felt like he was protecting someone, he loved Cassie because she was who he thought was supposed to be his idea of the perfect woman, but he really actually loves Jules.

I have severe PTSD from my time in hospitals and the psych ward where ironically my dad started to get the help he needed from the paediatric team who were meant to save me. And I have major depressive disorder because of the mess that my life has turned into- disability, doctors, therapists, medications, and the knowledge I don’t have much time left on this earth. Please parents you gotta show your kids love. Nate’s dad didn’t and look at how fucked up Nate is- turning his anger into abuse in intimate relationships and an inability to fully deal with his own sexuality. I turned my life around, and it did heavily involve going no contact with my entire family, because being the Identified Patient meant no matter what, I wasn't allowed to improve or ever be a good person. HOWEVER, I'd been away from them a couple months when it finally hit me how awful I'd been to my youngest brother. For a while I said, "I won't invade his life, but he ever wants it, an apology is always waiting for him." Buuuut.... it never sat right with me how I was saying it, but he didn't know it.
So I sent one email. One email, where I let him know he was due quite a hefty apology from me if he wanted it; and I also swore not to contact him further, unless he expressly states that he would want that contact. I have not received any reply, and I have no intention of breaking my word.

A little back story (I’m halfway through your vid so maybe it will be revealed):
Cal realized he was bi-sexual at the very least (he’s pansexual, I think) with a preference for men after falling for his best friend from childhood. But he didn’t think his friend felt the same so by Senior year in HS he’s dating and sleeping with Portia. He was scared to be real with his best buddy but once he finally was, his friend reciprocated and they decided they’d go away (I think to the same university) and live life together. He was just putting plans into place when Portia told him she was pregnant. So he didn’t go to university and he did not get to be with the one he viewed as the love of his life. He stayed and married her and they had the older son - followed by Nate a few years later. And he grew so bitter and resentful.
He poured all his sadness and resentment into one night hook ups, meeting men and transsexual women online. As they say, you’re only as sick as your secrets. In one of the first episodes before school begins and Jules has just moved newly to town, she meets him online and they hook up. If you didn’t realize it, Jules is trans.
She is shocked to later learn that Cal is Nate’s dad. What she doesn’t know is that Cal recorded their encounter (and all his encounters before and after that) and Nate watches these recordings, unbeknownst to his dad. He has since he was young and they have enraged and traumatized him. At this point, though, he takes his rage out on Jules by catfishing her online as Tyler. When he meets her, he tells her about the video and she obviously is shattered.
Though Nate does this to be hateful, he also begins having these split second moments where he thinks of Jules romantically/sexually - just flashes really. But something inside him softens.
After Cal has that horrible exchange with his family, he moves to his shop and just parties day and night with random people who he hooks up with - some that are obviously underage. And it is at this time that Nate has a bit of a reckoning, at least with regards to his father. But he does it seeking revenge from his dad.
In an odd turn of events, Nate gives Jules the recording his dad took and turns all the other videos into the police who then go on to arrest his dad on multiple counts of sex with a minor (and other charges, I’m sure).
It’s a pretty messed up show, for sure. But Zendaya gives Rue such humanity and there are characters you really do root for and wish the best for. I really like Cassie’s sister, Lexi. How she maintains her sanity in that pit of hell and drama she lives in is beyond me. She is the nerdy theater kid/artist who puts all her pain into her art.
Anyhow, despite all the dysfunction, one wishes for happy endings - endings that I doubt will come.
Rue’s last line in the last episode is that she stayed sober all the way through summer. This tells us that the show will probably time jump, though we don’t know where to in the future. If it time jumps way after summer, it tells us that fall is where she again lost her sobriety. However, maybe it will time jump to the very start of the next school year so Rue can’t say about the future.
I personally think Rue is narrating after she died from an overdose. I think she’s telling the story of everyone from that all knowing point of view because she’s dead and now she can see everything; every motive and backstory. But, that’s just me.
