The drummer is Terry Williams. He was known for hitting the drums very hard. He was on fire during this show. He is now 75 and retired in Swansa, Wales. Mark Knopfler, the lead, is one of the best guitarists in the world. This is widely considered one of the best live performances of all time.

What is even more remarkable to consider, is that this was Dire Straits' FIRST single, and the first song they recorded. Take this into account when listening to the composition, the layers, the way the lead guitar interacts with the keyboard, the complexity of the drums, the tempo changes, the build up, the solo,....... it is a modern orchestral piece, in a way that modern music regularly fails to even come close to.
The effortless way that Knopfler plays the riffs, the picking, the sheer amount of notes, the amount of bends (the pushing of the strings on the fret to increase the pitch of a note), the guitar is an extension of his soul. No other way to describe it.

Red suit is Mark Knopfler. Guitar God. Black tank top guitar is Hal Lindes. Keyboard and piano is Alan Clark. White suit is Bassist John Ilsley. Tommy Mandel was the second keyboardist. It's him at the top right, dancing while he's not playing just to keep the energy going strong. He is the one in white t-shirt with curly hair. The boards are to the left and right of Terry on the drums.

First time here. Enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
    My dire straight story.
It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

So pumped you discovered Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits through this Alchemy Live performance of "Sultans of Swing." One of my fave guitarists and bands!
And if you are still interested in discovering other greats, here are a few you will not regret checking out....
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble:
"Texas Flood" (at the El Mocambo, 1983), "Voodoo Child" (at Austin, 1989), "Riviera Paradise" (studio album), "Leave My Girl Alone" (at Austin, 1989), "Life Without You" (at the Capitol Theater, Passaic), "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up On Love," "Mary Had A Little Lamb" (Austin), "Couldn't Stand The Weather," "Pride And Joy" (Montreux, 1982), "Dirty Pool" (at the Tornado Jam), "Love Struck Baby"/"Rude Mood" (at Daytona Beach), "Tin Pan Alley" (with Johnny Copeland), "Look at Little Sister (with Jeff Healey at one venue, and also just with Stevie and the band at Austin with a string breaking and a guitar swap without Stevie missing a beat), "Goin' Down Slow (with Jeff Beck), and a wealth of other performances. Fantastic music videos of theirs, too... such as "Cold Shot" and "Superstition." And a soundcheck (captured on amateur video) where SRV wipes the sleep from his eyes to come blasting out the gate like a bull at rodeo. Hardly a mere soundcheck. More like a mini concert with no warm-up at all!
Another artist is Steve Marriott (first with The Small Faces, then with Humble Pie, and also solo). Try "Itchycoo Park" with the first band; "Black Coffee" with Humble Pie and backup singers The Blackberries, recorded live for The Old Grey Whistle Test program; and a much later solo performance by Marriott of "Five Long Years." Incredible vocal pipes, and he was no slouch on the guitar.
I can't forget to mention Tom Jones either. A six-decade career and still going. Check out his 1970 "I Who Have Nothing"; 1969 "Long Time Gone" collab with the band CSN&Y, a duet of "Raise Your Hand" with Janis Joplin, also in 1969 on his TV show; songs and performances like "Carrying A Torch," "If I Only Knew," a cover with John Farnham of AC/DC's "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Want To Rock And Roll)"; and Tom's impromptu performances on The Voice UK where he's been a judge and coach for some time (you can find TH-cam compilations of his best moments on the series, whether singing solo, or singing with another of the judges, like Jennifer Hudson, or having an off-the-cuff duet with a contestant. Tom's album two years ago shot to No.1 on the UK album charts and a song from the release charted high on the Billboard 100. Time hasn't dimmed Jones' voice, charm, or swag.
Subbed so I can tag along on your journey. Omigosh... there's Steve Perry and Journey, too! You are gonna be a busy man.😅

I saw this band play twice, and I saw the solo concert of Mark Knopfler twice as well. I picked up their first album just by chance when I was in a record store when I was 18. It was newly released and I played it so many times I wore it out and had to buy another one. I bought their next album and the next and then they came to town in 1981 or 1982, 4 years after the first album. Tickets might have been $35? Incredible show. I was a foot off the ground when I left. I didn't want it to end. Then they had the Brother's In Arms tour and I went to that in Vancouver where I'm from. Another epic show. I'm an old guy obviously compared to you but I wouldn't change a thing. I have been their biggest fan forever. There isn't a throw-away song on any of their albums. Even Mark's solo stuff is so great. I've seen him in concert as a solo artist. The concert at Queen Elizabeth Theatre was legendary. Listen to Dire Straits first album. so many great tracks. Wild West End is such a well-written song. Lady Writer off their next album, Communique, what can I say about the guitar in that song. Skateaway in Making Movies. I can go on for hours. Great band, great unique sound. So happy the newer generations appreciate what I have been a fan of from the beginning. Enjoy. Most music now to me is painfully shitty. Drake? Ugh. But that's a generational thing. My parents hated my music, asnd so it goes. I suggest you listen to Rush. Another fave band of mine. Tom Sawyer is an epic track. I love Genesis as well. Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was a double album and I listened to that a lot too. Carpet Crawlers is such a great song. Too many bands and songs to list for me. Enjoy these 70's and 80's bands. 'Real' music. Dude.

Great reaction! Thanks! Red suit is lead, indeed 🙂Mark Knopfler. This was the Alchemy tour in '84 and they were contracted in 1977. Mark Knopfler is one of my personal top favourite songwriters. This really happened when he walked into a pub to shelter for the rain (same goes for Money for Nothing. Check that story and remember the time period back then with the real MTV). IMO Knopfler is the very best guitarist ever for many reasons. And this performance is one of the (In my oppinion) three greatest all time (Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb @Pulse 1994 live,. The live version of Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil from the "get yer ya ya's out" album - 3 minutes insane solo by Keith Richards and Mick Taylor. And this one). I don't know about the audience . May be some vips in front and plebs in the back? , but Terry Williams (drums) had his dad for the first time there at a live show. So, he wanted to impress him, and well, he did. He started uptempo (compaired to the studio version, which is good indeed, but this performance was insane) and Mark Knopfler has no difficulty at all by picking up some extra tempo, improvising 70% of the solos, using his strat as a Banjo, Timing is SPOT ON, Not a single miss on a clear strat, and even then it just looks like he is doing his groceries on an Saturday with all the time in the world. Terry is a freacking monster there at the drums, absolutely killing it. But Mark Knopfler is just scary.... It didn't even looked like he needed to put in some effort. Now you need to do Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love from the same Alchemy Live concert. Tunnel of love has the best instrumental outro of any song ever in my opinion. 5 minutes of guitar perfection. Continue to be astounded 😊 Also if you want to check out something else with a phenomenal guitar solo then React to I’d rather go blind by Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa live in Amsterdam. This will blow your mind 💥

I'll give 5 other European guitarists to checkout live - anything by:
    Rory Gallagher
    Alvin Lee (10 years after)
    David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
    Bill Nelson (Bebop Deluxe)
    Robin Trower
All very different - but brilliant

Live music is the BEST, and this is a great one! Since you liked Hey You from Pink Floyd I'd like to suggest a few of their live songs that will blow your mind: Sorrow, Comfortably Numb, and One of These Days from the Pulse concert, and Dogs of War from The Delicate Sound of Thunder concert. 🤘🏽

For guitar fans, maybe the only thing that tops this is David Gilmore's Comfortably Numb solo recorded on Pink Floyd's 1994 Pulse tour at Earls Court.(I was there, and i'll NEVER get sick of being able to say that.)

Ones a rock song with lots of little surprises at the and one is the most emotional song you could ever hear and see, respectively. All the best, cheers from Australia 😊🎸🎸🎸

Dire straits are the best! If you want to see another, phenomenal, live performance, then I strongly recommend Tunnel of Love from Wembley, 1985. This song is autobiographical. Knopfler met a girl when he was a teenager at an amusement park called The Spanish City. They agreed not to give each other their names at the end of the evening they left. Years later, he still thinking about her and wrote this powerful song with a poignant, outro guitar solo that is possibly the best ever in rock ‘n’ roll history.

I never saw Dire Straits in concert but for other major bands of the late 1970s, I can remember paying $11 - $25. We would camp out overnight on the sidewalk in front of the venue box office to get good seats.

I am in my 50's and was blessed to be able to enjoy them in their prime. Mark Knopfler is a guitar god. One of the best of all times with a very unique style and sound. It makes me happy when the younger generations of music lovers find and embrace these gems.

you can listen to another 1000 performances from a 1000 different groups and you will be hard pressed to find one that compares to this one at alchemy. yes! it can make you cry, sing, and dance all in 10 minutes. you are right when you say us older people had better music in the 70's thru the 80's. among other things. true talent will always shine through the ages and transcend any age gaps. nice to see a young guy get hooked on the best music of any age.

Looking back through your video catalog, I can guarantee you a wild musical discovery. You are already going in that direction.
I was there when all of this happened. Do what everyone else does on these channels and play the official music video of RUSH, Tom Sawyer, being recorded live in that cool, Canadian, recording studio, Le Studio that they used a lot for some of their best music.
