  • Hard use beat down starts at min 4 around after some quick overview and thoughts. I tested the performance of the new Cold Steel Oyabun knife (4034SS Steel - taiwan made) in a harduse/hardcore szenario by doing spinewhacks, chopping, sabbing, batoning, prying, sidewhacks and shaving of Aluminium. My goal was to make a real and authentic video basically in one take. Im doing this only as a hobby so I dont get anything but enjoyment from testing knives. Dont do this at home.
    I do a detailed analysis with the camera close up in the house at the end of the video.
    I was actually surprised how well it did hold up. Because its a linerlock and because the grip is not that good to hold it firmly for chopping and such I do believe that this knife didnt took quite as much force as the Cold Steel Sr 1 but it is more damaged than the Sr1. I didnt to a full hardcore stabbing test into iron because there is always a risk to cut yourself if a knife fails and I wasnt sure if I can trust this liner lock. It still took an abusive beating and survived surprisingly. No lock failure no disengagement. Keep in mind that there might be a bit luck involved since the liner did bend in deeper instead of bending against the secondary lock. So the secondary didnt have to prove its strenght. But the liner didnt break. That's nice. The 4034SS steel isnt that great from what I can tell. I would have prefered the 8CrMoV steel of the Sr1 since that steel seems to hold up better.

      I have had conversations with TH-cam knife reviewers that have said that they thought this knife had a weak handle construction. But just because the rubber handle material and thin plastic scales are coupled with a leaf spring lock it flexes. Flexing while it may not be what we knife guys like in a folding knife handle dose not mean its not strong. The blade extends far into the handle before it hits the stop pin and is sandwiched between the scales with very little to no space for the liner if its used hard and bent to slide between the scale of the knife also it has a secondary lock with a thick blade and the famous thick tanto tip of the Legendary Cold Steel of Old. This knife is a sleeper of a small self defense knife. The handle survived and the lock can be easily bent back into place if you disassemble the knife to do it. The tip can be sharpened and so can the blade with ease. 98% of folding knives with liners would of folded if subjected to this type of abuse. The Oyabun is not a bad knife after all which i already knew. God Bless.

    Hey thanks! Your testing was quite revealing and exposed certain weaknesses that are good to know. Hopefully ColdSteel will take note of some of your points. Your time and attention are greatly appreciated.

      Nice to hear. I appreciate watching knifeviedeos as well for entertainment. And its enjoyable doing such videos. The hard use videos are the most fun for me but there has to be an interesting and not to expensive knife to make a video because the value of the knife gets obviously lost or diminished by doing such tests.

      Yeah I heard these concerns as well and had to check it out. Maybe there could be differences in quality control for some people. For me it did exeed my expectations especially for a liner lock.

    I needed to adjust the pinon screw it was too tight and knife lock was not engaging. I bought two so it is an issue. But I am an engineer so it was simply fixed. Harduse batons with a folder? Who dares do that with most folders? Compared to other folders its great. My family emigrated from Speir, Germany, in Rhineland, 1700.

    • @hardusehobby
      @hardusehobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting. My family also came from Germany. For the batoning of folding knives I give you a short analogy to understand why people do that sometimes. Imagine a folding knife would be a modern human beeing. A modern human beeing can drive everywhere with a car or an e-bike or bus or these e-scooters that are everywhere. An average modern human often works at the computer sitting in an office all day. So most modern human beeings dont really need muscles anymore. They dont need endurance or reflexes for their tasks. But some of them still like to have these things because we are still animals inside. Some feel these kind of attractions more and some less but its a reality. Every folding knife can do the very limited "nessesairy" tasks of modern humans. But not every folding knife can make human beeings smile. If we would question the necessity of all our modern knife tasks in self critical fashion we would find very quickly that folding knives are not necessairy anymore in our 21th centure. Most people only "need" some simple knife in the kitchen or to cut their meal in pieces at the table. Also many people dont cook themselves anymore and only eat "to go" so thats that. Its not really about the need its more about the hobby. Nice to hear that you could solve your issues with your knife👍

    Would you recommend this to anyone? How did the handle feel? Was it feeling strong and ridged? Or, did it feel weak and flexible?

    • @hardusehobby
      @hardusehobby  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Of course there are better options out there. Still I was kinda surprised of the durability. Obviously my test is limited by the time it took and by the force I was willing and able to generate. Also it wasnt that good to grip it to generate force. That might have lowered the impact. It felt pretty cheap so I expected it to fail but it did hold up way better then expected. Maybe a long term test would show different results. I didnt hard use it since then because there are better options out there for a user knife. It seems like the secondary lock does pretty good in preventing failure of the standard liner under abusive use at least for some time. The liner and the hole construction is a bit bendy so it doesnt break. The tanto blade might not be my nr1 choice for all around tasks. Also a thick blade should maybe be wider for better slicing.

    For an inexpensive knife it did great! I’m not sure my Benchmade Grizzly Ridge would do as well- and I’d be afraid to try!

    • @hardusehobby
      @hardusehobby  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard to tell. I dont own a Benchmade. Some Benchmade knives seem to be very tough. Like the 560 Super Freek 980 Turret or the old Adamas for example. They seem to be pretty successful in the hard use tests out there. But some Benchmades seem to be more average in terms of strengh. A couple of people also reported issues with the reliability of these ring shaped springs of the Axis lock. But from what I have seen most of the Benchmade Knives should be pretty save to use in most scenarios if you dont try to break them. I mean you could definitely try it. Its fun to do a hard use test and if you really wanna know how strong it is and if you can replace the knife its a entertaining thing to try it out. I know its a bit wasteful but some people drink alcohol some people occasionally hit knives for fun right?😉

      Yea its a bit wasteful of course.
      Also buying pocket knives is luxury and wasteful. These tests are to see what a "good" knife can withstand and for entertainement.
      We dont dont really need a knife in modern life so its a hobby.

    Try editing your video and cutting between shots. The intro you did could be done in front of a table with the camera focused on the knife so it isn't constantly trying to focus. Start with a short review of the knife. Then explain your test and what its suppose to achieve. Then cut to you doing the test.

      Thank you for your manual but I personally prefer the videos that were made 10-15 years ago on youtube from some random Jack in his backyard. My goal is not to do professional videos or to make money. I m just here for fun and the goal is to make a video more or less in one take and get the information out there in genuine and authentic manner preferably without cutting and editing👍
