And if Chrollo knew who ordered the dude, there's no way he didn't know about him existing and being there.
>Togashi introduces new card game >Most of the options in it are an excuse for exposition Many people have been complaining about the text dumps, so I guess he wanted to make it more entertaining in a way.
I don't think he cares about the public opinions, or else the manga would be radically different than it is. Since the beginning he makes some decisions that are not the potentially most pleasing one to the public... and we have to assume he does it on purpose because he is a genius and a manga veteran. His breakthrough was YYH, that made him rich (for manga author standards in the 90s) before even starting HxH. He breaks some "conventions" that are easily expected from this kind of work that is action adventure with energy powers, and as he is getting older he is caring even less about delivering the "ideal shonen" that the average audience wants to see.
@@carlosaugusto9821 The "ideal shonen that the average audience wants to see" isn't even what the average audience wants to see. It is what Jump (and every other Jump) are sure will sell numbers, without risk. But it is not like we don't know that publishers care for what will safely make money, and not for what will necessarily make for a good story. Cause, even if they can overlap, the former isn't identical to the latter. Despite the long hiatuses, HxH is still among the best selling manga ever. And it is no secret that letting an artist cook can yield better results than restricting them. That said, Togashi *does* care what his audience wants, and he has said he is willing to cater to that by making creative choices they will like. But he will still make his choice from among stuff *he wants* to write. That's why YYH ended prematurely, because Jump was not allowing Togashi to do what he wanted with the series. This was even mentioned in his apology letter (aimed to the readers) after YYH ended. Even though, in hindsight, the audience would have loved it. It is this hindsight that Togashi takes advantage off now with HxH - Jump fucked around and found out that allowing Togashi to do what he does best is a win win for both. He also was insanely rich even for modern day standards due to YYH. His net worth in the 90s was in the 1-10m USD range. His current net worth is over 30m. His wife's (she made Sailor Moon) is over 10m USD. Togashi has been writing HxH purely for the sake of creating art.
I believe one of the mini requests would be to kiss morena, and her actual request would be to kill tseriednich. I believe she may reveal his crimes to get her to agree.
My theory is that, since Borksen has inferred her win condition is to get X, Morena's clever enough to have actually made X HER win condition. Maybe X, Yes, and No are all the same outcome, which is Borksen going back to her soldier friends, and all Morena actually wants is to get Borksen to use deal. Then the "small request" is a lil kiss, and Borksen can return thinking she won the game an unaware she's infected. We know from the rules that this will be the outcome. Deal allows Borksen to choose a specific card from her graveyard, so it appears to give her a ton of power. When Borksen's down to two cards left, unless those two happen to be X and Return (a 1/10 chance), Borksen knows that there's a chance of Morena picking her winning card next round causing her to lose the game. Since Morena goes last, then for Borksen to be 100% certain she can be left with X or Return, Borksen will have to pick Deal when she's down to two cards. Morena's set it up so her own actual goal is to get Borksen to complete the small request, NOT to have Borksen be left with Yes.
I agree! I think we're looking at a setup where Borksen ditches the "power" card (is she even certain this game is supernatural? Is she even aware of the possibility?), and is placed in a situation where she must either give Morena the smooch, or forgo her Deal card, both of which set her up to be contaminated.
But what does Morena get from this? Simply infecting Borksen with contagion doesn't ensure that Borksen will play the game. The only thing she'd gain - and this is only implied - is to be able to tell Borksen's location. There's no need to go through the card game for this. She could have just kissed Borksen and released her.
It could be Morena doesn't want Borkson to select no because if she did Morena would have to dispose of Borkson which Morena doesn't want to do because it may be hard to find another person like Borkson. Where as if Borkson selects X then there is still a chance Morena can get Borkson to their side. Perhaps X doesn't actually end the game and merely delays it allowing Morena to activate the ability again on Borkson but perhaps with different restrictions.
I love how he can set up a bunch of things and then be like nah bruh and create a whole new scenario throwing out everything you thought would happen 👌🏾
Togashi is a big fan of card games he was even friends with kazuki takahashi the author of yugioh to such an extent where the authors note in chapter 391 was him reminising about laughing together about each other series
Yeah, the nen system lends itself perfectly to card games too bc there's so many rules and restrictions that could be applied. Someone in this universe likely has a Poker ability that's probably one of the most powerful abilities in the game lol. LET'S GO GAMBLING
I love how comfortable Borksen is in this situation. She’s just chilling on the couch while the mafia plays games with her life. It’s like Morena is on a first date with someone she met off Bumble
Man oh man, how crazy would it be if it turned out that Contagion Game was actually the ability of someone that really doesn't like humanity... Someone like say, Gyro? If we ever get a focus on Gon again, having him pitted against Gyro and having to relearn nen would certainly be interesting, especially if Contagion Game is an ability currently being spread back on the mainland. I know it's a shot in the dark, but that's what Hunter X Hunter fans are here for!
Hisoka: can I like... Use the cards to kill someone? As in... With the edge of the card. Morena: no, but you use the "transition" card. This card gives you the chance to ask me a question. But it also makes the game transition to an entire different game of shogi. Then, if you win that game, you have to flip a coin. But the coin has to ALWAYS land standing on a side. If it doesn't... Well, armageddon. Hisoka: man this boring af. I'm vanilla. When do I fight someone? Gon: I feel you bro.
I can see why Hisoka doesn’t like facing against abilities like this Gon would’ve been at a huge disadvantage this arc since things can’t be solved as simply “raw power”
Don’t remember where I heard this but the QA card never mentioned that you couldn’t repeat a question twice, it was only softly implied by the rules of the QB card but since we’re all about semantics in games like these it could be a pivotal loophole.
*borksen ends up with the X card* Borksen: guess this is your defeat Morena Morena: Oh yeah......i forgot to explain this card........THE UNSTOPPABLE EXODIA 👹
I just dont see a world where Borkson walks out of this fine. Kinda feels like the card game is a symbolic representation of Morena’s experience with the world. From the moment they enter the “game” children are screwed over by their parents and have no chance of safety.
Morena seems very comfortable with this game. That makes me think that she's had this ability for a long time. Maybe this is her ability from the first time she played the contagion game, then she reached level 100, and now she's just unlocked a 3rd hatsu ability not yet revealed. That would be bad news. Who knows? Worst case scenario, maybe Contagion is Gyro's ability and he's started the beginning of a worldwide catastrophe.
9:22 i was thinking the "being efficient" part might be referring to the troupe members headed to the Heil-ly hideout, since presumably these guys already know that through the mole

I do belive she has already been kissed, and granted contaignon. The game they are playing is Morenas other abilety to enforce rules to participants of contaignon, seems as an appropriative condition. In this case the game would exist only to speedrun Volksens Levels
the deal card is also a catch, because we assume bork would use it to try and revive the X or revive card, but depending on which is in the graveyard morenas request could be “i request that you don’t revive the x card” which also amounts to a wasted turn
Reading this chapter immediately reminded me of Power Pros Baseball, a HUGE Japanese franchise known for its deep RPG mode that utilizes a card-based system to select dialogue options. I cant help but wonder is this is the inspiration behind Morena's negotiation game...
Thanks again for the great breakdowns Liam, especially the deeper meaning behind the original Japanese release of the manga - this is stuff us English speakers would never pick up on without your help. I had a crackpot idea - Is it possible that part of the Heil-Ly Family's plan is for Borksen to get manipulated into joining the Heil-Ly via the negotiation game and then killing some of the other members present in the base? As part of Contagion's ability, a member killing a nen user gains 10 levels. and from the end of Chapter 405, Level 51 appears to be some kind of special Nen power spike. If Borksen joined at level 1 and was forced to kill the 5 non-Morena members of the Heil-Ly family, she'd instantly get a Nen ability and have it power spiked at level 51. Borksen getting this ability might be enough to trigger some terrible event during Halkenburg's funeral, and ignite the powder keg that is the ship. In terms of evidence, note there are exactly 5 non-Morena Heil-Ly members present at the negotiation game - probably just a coincidence, but it would fit. Also, it may justify what Morena wants to "Make sure she doesn't say No" - if she says No, they might be forced to just kill Borksen, while Borksen leaving the game via the X card might allow for other options. It sounds completely insane to imagine the Heil-Ly family members offering themselves up for death like that, but I'd consider that most members of family seem committed enough to Morena to die for her, and probably don't value their lives too strongly having joined the family in the first place. Plus, it's possible that they themselves may be psuedo-coerced as part of the negotiation game themselves. It certainly would be a crazy moment to reveal just how much of a puppet master dedicated to the destruction of the world Morena is!
I like the fact that after Morena explains that she is the parent and Borksen is the Child, she gives Borksen the order to turn the cards on Borksens side around in a specific order. That could be a condition because why would they be not face up as Morenas cards when she has to explain the rules first anyway?
I think the restriction on Morena's ability is that to play the card game, you have to put your opponent in a situation where you can easily kill them. That's why Borksen is surrounded by Morena's disciples, even though she can't use Nen, just to guarantee that the condition is met. If Morena wins, she gets what she wants. If the opponent wins, they get to leave unharmed or Morena runs the risk of dying or losing her Nen if they didn't, something like that.
The small request being a kiss is a very smart move and I really like this idea, let's see if it wilk happen or if maybe Borksen will find a way to perceive Morena's intention and find a way out of it (though I don't see what it could be right now)
I have the feeling that the request will be, not to join the family herself, but to directly do the thing that she is supposed to do. Like kill the fourth prince for example. I'd see that as a way easier thing for Morena to convince Borksen then the vague proposition of joining the Heil-Ly . But idk...
Or Morena is Gyro, whose Hatsu is to transform into people he's killed, and then he was infected with contagion, reached level 20, and developed a second Hatsu aka the negotiation game, and then he/she reached level 100, and became a patient 0 and started his own game of contagion. Effectively giving him 3 Hatsus.
just a thought I don't think he will ever return in the series but I could see Gyro working with someone like Morena since they have very similar goals of upending the world in some fashion.
The "No" card likely causes backlash towards the dealer or allows the player to reject the request and leave the game with impunity from the dealer and their allies, so it would be the worst outcome for Morena under both these theories. The "X" card for no answer probably causes no effect and ends the game, allowing other means to be applied to coerce or use Borksen for their purposes still, but it would be more difficult and less likely to be effective or some other undesirable reason.
morena might have more than one plan according to the final card, maybe if borksen got the x card they will let her go but apply a surveillance ability on her so they can spy on the military, maybe they even want her to go back and inform the royal army as a part of their scheme, also borksen joining them wholeheartedly after learning about morena's goals isn't that far fetched
I would love to find out that contagion was not originally Morena's ability. It could have fun implications (but maybe make the arc longer indirectly).
a veteran nen user seems unlikely to immediately go "power". They would know that some of the most powerful abilities have conditions of explaining the ability so it would seem like a trap.
Not sure why people think there's a time limit or time consequence to the game itself, i thought it was pretty clear that the time limit is external - Morena wants to finish and recruit Bork before either the Troupe busts in or something changes dramatically otherwise with all the other events going on
I’m so glad he said that Contagion might not be her ability because I’ve been thinking the same and I felt like I needed a tin foil hat. My personal theory is that it is Beyond’s ability and she is unknowingly helping him. I also wonder if the request could be something like “Help our mafia faction by protecting the 4th prince” then is she ends with the “Yes” card she has to help them and that’s super vague but if she ends with “No” she can no longer protect the prince. Or maybe something else with that kind of double meaning that makes both “Yes” and “No” equally bad options.
I dont like the idea that the card game is her hatsu simply because it would mean the ability is newer, and that she hasn't used it on everyone who joined up from the start. But then again maybe she played the game with no nen stakes originally and the game developed into a hatsu with nen stakes once she reached a certain level
Morena: "do you like this art piece, yes or no?" -Heil-ly member carries out a tattoo'd dismembered torso Terrorsand was responsibe for Vorxen: "Oh god no" Game ends
Yes and No basically have 50/50 chances. Joker, Return, and X all have the potential of saying Yes or No. X is the only card with the additional option to leave without engaging the game at all. So the point of the game is to present a compelling argument to Borky to convince her to join and select Yes. After all, the game gives Morena the ability to explain her side and present her case for joining. If you want to set up a game of chance as the House, you want a game where you have the winning advantage. The game itself is more a reason to get Borkington to explore Morena's motives of her own volition....or at least feel like it was of her own volition. That or just kiss.
So Morena is determined not to get a No But implies to Borksen that the time restriction is because they'll likely find another specialist at any moment..? Definitely feels like the binding vow is on the No and not on the X
Both "Power" and "Aim" are only important for Borksen in case she finishes with X and goes away, because otherwise she probably wouldn't be able to come into contact with anyone who could use that information. Similarly, "Yes?" and "No?" are only important if she finishes with Joker because then she needs to decide between the two answers. Furthermore, Borksen already knows that Morena wants to recruit her, so she could probably make a guess what happens with Yes, especially if she picks "Power". So "No?" is definitely the better question. I'm too lazy to come up with good "Question A" questions, but since "Question B" can only be played after A and "Power", "Aim", "Deal" and "No?" are all potentially of higher priority, I don't think "Question B" will get played. Of course, if Joker goes to the graveyard, "No?" and "Yes?" become unimportant, so I would wait until the last turn (I have only one card remaining) to ask "No?" only if I know that Joker is the card that is left. I would play "Deal" if at least one of Return and X go to the graveyard, but I would hold off on it for as long as possible (until I have two cards left). So if we assume the worst case (that I would need to play "No?" and "Deal" in the last and second-to-last turn), then the first three questions are left for "Question A", "Question B", "Power" and "Aim". If someone can come up with good A and B questions, I am happy to hear it.

And I am saying this because we already got a red herring that the Sarasa incident was avenged: we learned that the Troupe had killed the one who most likely ordered the whole thing! But I consider it a red herring because we *know* tattoo artist guy was involved there, and is currently aboard Black Whale One. And if Chrollo knew who ordered the dude, there's no way he didn't know about him existing and being there.
@@azraeldusk2154 yeah very interesting, some plots were intended to be solve in a spectacular way possible in a grand finale of this arc.
so this is the life purpose of playing yugioh, to understand morena's game
Lmfao the entire premise of one anime is just an ability for someone in another? That shit is lowkey OP if so 😂😂😂😂
fr if you don't have that yugioh background you def getting banished🤣
>Togashi introduces new card game
>Most of the options in it are an excuse for exposition
Many people have been complaining about the text dumps, so I guess he wanted to make it more entertaining in a way.
@@azraeldusk2154 what did togashi want to do with yyh?
I believe one of the mini requests would be to kiss morena, and her actual request would be to kill tseriednich. I believe she may reveal his crimes to get her to agree.
How tf would they kill him tho
@@gabrielgoes0they won't lol. They'll prolly fail
@@AhmedHussain-ju6xd i see u again
Answering with Yes just seems like a cherry on top while no is less optimal but still an outcome Morena is fine with
LET'S GO GAMBLING
so glad every time i get a notification from you, dose of HxH right when i needed it
1:00 Morena Prudo meets Kyoraku Shunsui
Morena: If the girl says No, then the answer is obviously No!
But the thing is, she’s not gonna say No....because of the implication.
MIND BLOWN
Hisoka: can I like... Use the cards to kill someone? As in... With the edge of the card.
Morena: no, but you use the "transition" card. This card gives you the chance to ask me a question. But it also makes the game transition to an entire different game of shogi. Then, if you win that game, you have to flip a coin. But the coin has to ALWAYS land standing on a side. If it doesn't... Well, armageddon.
Hisoka: man this boring af. I'm vanilla. When do I fight someone?
Gon: I feel you bro.
I can see why Hisoka doesn’t like facing against abilities like this
Gon would’ve been at a huge disadvantage this arc since things can’t be solved as simply “raw power”
3:56 That background looks like the mansion from RE1 Remake
The thought the exact same thing
Don’t remember where I heard this but the QA card never mentioned that you couldn’t repeat a question twice, it was only softly implied by the rules of the QB card but since we’re all about semantics in games like these it could be a pivotal loophole.
Perhaps Merina is like komugi. She instantly knows every possible outcome.
I have a feeling Marena might end up being the crashout of the century, there’s no way that calm persona can be maintained forever with so much hatred
*borksen ends up with the X card*
Borksen: guess this is your defeat Morena
Morena: Oh yeah......i forgot to explain this card........THE UNSTOPPABLE EXODIA 👹
Greed Island is my favorite arc, so I'm all for more card games
Its crazy that an entire chapter was dedicated to learning about the ins and outs of a nen ability, and i still feel like i dont fully get it
It's not certainly a Nen ability yet. If it isn't then the situation will be even more funny and crazy. But that still can be called typical Togashi.
Welcome to hunter hunter. I've read the hisoka vs chrollo fight twice and I still get lost on some of the details.
Omg i just realized what the hair reminds me of, its Guile from streetfighter 🙏
Bro Togashi is killing it but you my guy, props for keeping up with everything Japanese and all
Fun fact: the dealer in card games, in Greece, is called mother.
This game made me remember the hxh mobage cards. I'm surprised you haven't made a video covering them.
I just dont see a world where Borkson walks out of this fine.
Kinda feels like the card game is a symbolic representation of Morena’s experience with the world. From the moment they enter the “game” children are screwed over by their parents and have no chance of safety.
I woke up like, did my nigga drop something for us today?
Hell yeah he did. Let’s eat.
I was thinking along similar lines.
9:22 i was thinking the "being efficient" part might be referring to the troupe members headed to the Heil-ly hideout, since presumably these guys already know that through the mole
Honestly I skimmed through the explanation in the manga and was waiting for your video 😂
Who does the artwork for this channel, especially the style at 2:09 (and at other points in the video too of course). Do they have an instagram or something?
Would also like to know!
I know they use to shout them out on GLR a lot, pretty sure they use the same artist, and one of them sells prints/stickers Im pretty sure@@mrbriteside
Same! I've been wanting to support them individually for a long time now and hope they have a patreon where we could purchase custom art
That new game plus analogy was exceptional. Well played
Reading this chapter immediately reminded me of Power Pros Baseball, a HUGE Japanese franchise known for its deep RPG mode that utilizes a card-based system to select dialogue options. I cant help but wonder is this is the inspiration behind Morena's negotiation game...
So we had card games while sitting, card games while standing completely still, card games on motorcycles and now we have card games on boats🥳
3:15 in and wondering if Killuah and all his siblings are just nen conjurations now
now wait a damn minute…
This arc might be the best anime arc ever if it happens
Hey, all the talking and thinking will do wonders for the budget. They can probably get 24 episodes out of this for the price of 12.
We need Gongi as Board Game, we also need Greed Island as PC or PS game :) And now this card game as TCG :)
This doesn't make sense as a TCG since there are only 12 cards tho
@gabrielgoes0 Oh my bad haha
When the world needed him the most, he delivered!
Is it just me or anyone else thinks parallel future is hard counter to this Ability. Especially if 4th prince breaks 1 sec barrier.
2:55 Kinda like in Astro Royale. Maybe not. The word "adopt" was used.
The small request being a kiss is a very smart move and I really like this idea, let's see if it wilk happen or if maybe Borksen will find a way to perceive Morena's intention and find a way out of it (though I don't see what it could be right now)
I think selecting the "explain power" and stalling for time might be the best option, especially since you can find out why they are in a hurry.
i'm just waiting for the question "how do i win this game?"
Morena out here making the most violent leper colony to ever exist, lol.
Great video!!
Borksen: "Am I going to die if I quit the game"
Morena: "NO and YES"
a sofa vs a good gaming chair
I have the feeling that the request will be, not to join the family herself, but to directly do the thing that she is supposed to do. Like kill the fourth prince for example. I'd see that as a way easier thing for Morena to convince Borksen then the vague proposition of joining the Heil-Ly
Love your videos, hxh the best
just a thought I don't think he will ever return in the series but I could see Gyro working with someone like Morena since they have very similar goals of upending the world in some fashion.
Maybe also the time issue, might be that the longer she takes to come back, the more suspicious the others guards will be
The yes, no, or silence parallels pre Hunter exam Doki Doki Quiz so well.
Togashi's troupe & V drake shoutout! Great assets to hxh fandom

@@guanglaikangyi6054 can you explain pls
morena might have more than one plan according to the final card, maybe if borksen got the x card they will let her go but apply a surveillance ability on her so they can spy on the military, maybe they even want her to go back and inform the royal army as a part of their scheme, also borksen joining them wholeheartedly after learning about morena's goals isn't that far fetched
Thank you so much for explaining
You're welcome!
I would love to find out that contagion was not originally Morena's ability. It could have fun implications (but maybe make the arc longer indirectly).
Forget the melodussy comments im obsessed with morena. Shes one of the most interesting and appealing characters any manga has been blessed with.
Been looking into double speak and lying without lying for this new chapter I really hope Togashi continues their conversation
Thank you
Finally someone explain the game for me 🤩
Man. Thanks for this
I love the way Borkson and Volkson are both valid translations
a veteran nen user seems unlikely to immediately go "power".
Yall think the Melodussy makes Mac n cheese noises into a melody
….
I dont like the idea that the card game is her hatsu simply because it would mean the ability is newer, and that she hasn't used it on everyone who joined up from the start. But then again maybe she played the game with no nen stakes originally and the game developed into a hatsu with nen stakes once she reached a certain level

I WAS RIGHT!!!
So Morena is determined not to get a No
But implies to Borksen that the time restriction is because they'll likely find another specialist at any moment..?
