In 2018 when I was thru hiking my hiking buddy from Florida said PA was his favorite state to hike. He didn't mind the rocky sections and never mentioned snakes. His favorite memory was all the trail magic.
Trail magic mom is wicked good. Mom time is the greatest. Amazed that you have not found other hikers on the trail. Need some Cody time. Come on Cody, hit it!

There are lots of rattlesnakes in Pennsylvania and on the Kittatinny ridge in New Jersey, I saw them regularly when I lived there so just keep your eyes open

It was the first time I had the energy or desire to do anything other than sleep and I just happened to see you were streaming. It was a boost; thank you. I recall hiking around the snake pit because I was night hiking. I also recall seeing some piles of rocks that the trail did NOT go over. The trail planners must have had a bad day. 😂
Taylor, you make me laugh.. I have lived in Pennsylvania now for 50 years and have yet to see a rattlesnake.. The state with the most venomous snake bites is North Carolina, but I think you go through there while it is still chilly.. Be safe and keep your eyes peeled 👀
I’m actually going up to the AT (Bear Mountain, NY) today for a short hike with friend … I believe Taylor is beyond that point by now but maybe I’ll get lucky and run into her. Update ( 6 hrs later): did a quick 5 mile hike on AT and did not run into Taylor … bummer !!!
I'm surprised you didn't run into any rattlesnakes in North Carolina. Two years ago my youngest daughter and i were hiking in Smoky mountains National Park and had a 20 minute standoff with a 6 foot long Eastern diamondback. I finally took a large trash bag that we were keeping our packs in at night and got it full of air and shook it at him and he went back into the brush.

Be happy you are not still in VA. The weather really sucks right now. We had planned to hike the triple crown this weekend, but called it off. We already froze on our March AT trip, and got drenched on the April one. Couldn’t take 3 bad ones in a row.
Hello. Welcome to my backyard. I'm only about 40 minutes from Pulpit Rock. And the area around the 501 and William Penn shelters are a go to for overnights to test gear. When I don't mind driving, and want an easier time, it's down to Pine Grove Furnace and Tom's Run. 😊

That part of the trail was my cardio loop for 10 years. I think the rock piles story is that that peak was in contention for highest peak in Eastern PA but just barely lost out, so, some time ago people started bringing rocks to throw on the pile. If I'm not mistaken I do believe visitors to the other peak do the same thing. Peak rivalry.

I have never in my life watched even one episode of Survivor …. Guess I’m gonna have to tune in and see what fascinates Taylor so much.!!!😂❤ as long as it’s not on too late because this old man goes to bed quite early like 8 PM, eastern most nights..😴
Something to keep in mind : once you hit NH & MN the miles will lower significantly. No switch backs , steep inclines & declines , alpine zone weather planning and limited camping only at designated huts , you’ll have to plan accordingly. My advice and what I did on my thru was divide the presidential’s into sections. My miles dropped from 20-25miles a day to 15-18 max ! The terrain is gnarly and your body is depleted so continue to listen. I took several zeros at “the Notch” hostel at the beginning of the presidential range in NH and that helped my body tremendously. Then rested again at “rattle river hostel” just before ending southern Maine. Note! Southern Maine is just like NH. GO SLOW , use your poles and don’t underestimate the weather and terrain. Also recommend a few zeros once you hit Monson at “Shaws” you will need it for the 100mile wilderness push. Enjoy the journey Let go of the push and just soak in this last 500! Edge AT 21 😎✌🏼
I love watching your vlog. Please don't hate me for saying but aren't you missing out part of the experience by churning through the miles listening to podcasts? It seems to me such a gift that you have the time and the fitness to do these hikes but you are missing the hours of serenity walking and listening to nature without the bombardment of information we have in our everyday lifes? Live that you film the animals and your mom is so supportive. I completely agree with hotel stays and survivor episodes!

I’m hiking pulpit rock and the pinnacle today! I’ve hiked most of the Pennsylvania sections of the trail and the Pinnacle is always a favorite.

Timber rattlesnakes are the only species in the Smokies,Eastern Diamondbacks are only found in SE North Carolina and are extremely rare in that state.
