Not sure if someone has already mentioned it, but the main reason you don't want engine braking on track/race is you don't want to upset the balance of the bike if you need to suddenly let off throttle. Near/at the limit, if you release the throttle too quickly and you have a lot of engine braking, the sudden shift of weight from back to front can cause the front tire to wash out in a turn or the back end to suddenly slide. You kind of eluded to it with saying you want to modulate the balance with the brake, which is correct, but it's that high level of balance shift with sudden throttle changes that we really want to avoid.
Great point, Conan! The reduced engine braking definitely makes it easier to control the weight transfer when transitioning from the throttle to the brakes. Not sure if I ever really connected the dots there, as I haven't experienced the rear getting out of shape just from coming off the throttle, but it makes sense. Thanks for adding that! 🙂
@@hiimchad Not to belabor the point, but for anyone reading and asking, "why have engine braking at all?" I thought it would be worth noting why. You mentioned the throttle bodies closing, and I'm sure you're aware, but if you are totally off throttle, the butterfly valves on the intakes would be 100% closed, which creates a vacuum, which causes more effort for the pistons to move, which is what we feel as engine braking. With the throttle bodies closed, we're also using the least amount of fuel, and on the street, better gas milage is a concern. For some people, anyway :P. On track we aren't concerned with fuel economy so leaving the throttle valves open is the way to go.
Another good video Chad. I usually ride my Factory in Sport Mode around town in some kind of feeble effort to protect my license and Race Mode in the mountains. I was skeptical at first but you really can feel a difference between the ride modes on my bike. Good lord these things are impressive. :)
Hey Steven! I appreciate the compliment and am glad you enjoyed! 🙂 These bikes are impressive indeed! I've spent some time riding with each map and just liked the feel of the Race map the most. Sport could definitely be helpful in protecting your license around town, as you do have a little less punch in the mid-range, but I just had a hard time giving that up 😅 Hope you have a great weekend that includes a ride on your Tuono!
@@deankruse4491 Man that sucks. Did you talk to Aprilia? Sometimes the manufacturer is more interested than the dealer. I think Aprilia are trying to improve their customer satisfaction so they can create more demand and grow the dealer network. It might be worth a try. If they won't help, I'd send it down the road and buy something else. I once bought a new Japanese liter bike that threw a connecting rod at 1,400 miles and took out the entire bottom end of the engine. I guess there's always a chance you get a bad one.
Congratulations! I think you made an excellent choice, both in your motorcycle and in subscribing! 😂 Really appreciate your support of the channel and hope you enjoy your Tuono as much as I have mine, if not more! 🙂✌️
@hiimchad Hey man. I have the tuono 660 and want to progress to the v4. How much more mental can I expect everything to be? I guess any bike can be ridden sensibly, I just have this fear it will kill me in the first week...😂
@ it does have quite a lot of power. The tuono 1100 has a lot of rider aids too. So you can dim down the feel of the power. Plus the traction control, wheelie control, etc. it can be made to be easy to ride. The 1100 doesn’t feel really large and long compared to some other big naked bikes out there. The Aprilia v4 is the best sounding bike out there. However I used to own a 16 street triple r. Wanted the speed triple but got the street for a really good deal. Super fun bike to ride. I felt like I was riding the bike and not the bike taking me for a ride. The 675 I could full crank on it and didn’t feel like I wasn’t in control. Very fun bike, a lot of the time the smaller bikes are funner. I just wish it had a bit more power and didn’t plateau at the top end. I have a 2019 tuono 1100r, I don’t use it to its full potential. Which is impossible on public roads anyways. But I love the thing. It’s a dream bike. More power than I’ll truly need for the street. Bought it for that engine and the sound. And kind of an ego thing too if I’m being truthful. But it is a blast to crank it and see the reactions.
Great video and perfect explanation of each mode. I really can’t feel much of a difference between modes other than engine braking. I typically ride in race mode as well.
Thanks Pete! The differences are somewhat subtle, but you can feel them if you're paying very close attention. Race mode is where it's at! I love rolling off the throttle and not feeling like I'm using the brakes when my fingers are off the lever. :)
Sport mode has the most aggressive gas response and most engine braking. Race and track react a lot more smooth contrary what you stated. The only difference between Track and Race is the Track that has a bit more engine braking !
Sport mode definitely has the choppiest throttle when you're first rolling on. It's a lot sloppier than Track or Race. However, the Sport map actually makes a little less midrange power than the Track and Race maps, and the power curve is smoother as a result. Track and Race have the best throttle response, but produce more torque in the midrange than the Sport map, so power delivery is more aggressive once the throttle is open. That's what I was trying to explain 🙂
I forgot about the Bren flash! Nice to hear it’s made a big improvement on your bike, Perrin! I’d be curious to line bikes with all these different flashes up and see what each puts down. Betting the Aprilia Race ECU probably makes the least 😂

I'm not as familiar with the 21+ Tuono, but if it's anything like this and the Akra will delete the cat, it will need an ECU flash. The modes change fueling and response slightly, but not enough to compensate for the significant reduction in back pressure from the cat vanishing. For the 2017-20 bikes, the ECU can be remapped by an Aprilia dealer with the "Race ECU" which is designed to richen up the mixture for catless exhausts, or you can look into solutions from tuners like Gabro and OpenFlash.
