Good question! The main landing gears are designed to take much more abuse (force) than can be seen in this video. This is intentional, since landings in rough weather can result in rougher landings. The safety factors are usually designed between 1.25 and 1.5 of the operational air speeds. Seems quite low but those boys are pretty strong. Additionally the shock absorption system allows for a smooth experience for the passengers which also quickly attenuates the shock (good for the fuselage too). Just look at the size difference between the absorbers of the main landing gears and the nose wheel. In contrast: It is much more dangerous to hover over the airfield and then decide to land anyways. The danger that most people don't see is that the aircraft needs a lot of distance to decelerate (depends on the weight & braking capabilities of the aircraft and landing surface conditions). You can also look at the fuselage and how much it bounces. Ryanair doesn't really bounce more than the other aircraft. You can identify a hard landing when the aircraft touches down and the surface pushes the aircraft back in the air. (Look up student pilot landings, they're quite entertaining)

The temperature was very hot and they were very heavy. The plane got under the stall speed but somehow able to fly because of ground effect. In the end the temp got down and wind was favorable and they were able to climb.

But bigger than go-around risk (which isn't too bad unless it happens too frequently - fuel costs) is that if they float too far down the runway they might not have enough runway left to fully stop and then they run off the end... Most of these planes were pretty small, so if they're landing on a runway long enough for the big planes then they'd probably have heaps of extra runway so floating a bit is fine. But that A380 is another matter... That looked dangerous - bit of course, with the shot being so close that you can't see much more than the wheels themselves it's really hard to judge how far down the runway it really touched down...

I find it weird how most of the comments seem to imply that the Ryanair landing was particularly hard. It is by far the best (safest) landing in the video, and not particularly hard. Though I suppose most didn't notice that the shock absorbers compressed twice: first on the initial touchdown, then more as the spoilers deployed.

There's actually a strong safety point in a way Ryanair pilots bumping their planes into runway. Look up Red Wings 9268 Tu-204 crash in Moscow. The pilots performed super smooth touchdown, but due to strong side wind, one of the landing gear carts hasn't properly fixed in position. This caused onboard computer to fail all the braking procedures - engaging reverse thrust and deploying interceptors into braking position. The plane crashed into airport fence and rolled onto highway behind it.
That landing by Ryanair likely wasn't even a "hard" landing. And it's always best to prioritize getting the plane down and passengers safely to their destination than absolute passenger comfort. You wouldn't decide against a go around because some passengers might be uncomfortable or frustrated by it.

@@MrBunny53 if you happen to know already feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, im not a pilot or expert by any right but I think my thinking here isn't baseless. 737s are pretty small and light and inherently hard to land because they're more susceptible to things like wind. By floating what you're doing is allowing the plane to spend more time in a state where its vulnerable to disturbances or something to go wrong which could result in a go around (maybe dangerous isn't the right word for that reason). As a pilot your goal is to get the plane planted to the ground quickly and by the book, where your only concerns are safety and efficiency. Being able to float for longer also implies the plane has excess speed, something that may result in uncomfortable or possibly dangerous bouncing. The plane should come down and stay down, and variables should be minimized. edit: something else that came to mind is that floating means you'll overfly much more runway, leaving less runway for braking should things maybe go wrong.

Actually the Ryanair Pilots where the only ones that made it right, it was clearly windy and in those conditions you rather want a harder landing to have a good contact betwen wheels and runway. If you try to land softly, then your going to jump and lose runway lenght which could end in a runway overrun.
It's not a miracle that their plane didn't crash. Btw, there are more people who die from car accidents than from plane crashes every year. They are more likely to die while driving than while flying.
Happened to me 4 years ago, got on a plane with winds at 50km/h at ground level, literally had my trolley suspended in air while boarding due to the wind, did one hour of flight and at the landing the wind was making the plane roll quite a bit, the last I think 4/5 metres were done like a divebomb, the pilot obviously couldn't risk touching the runway with a wing, yet we made like a 5cm jump on the seats from the hit All in all quite a memorable experience

I find it weird how most of the comments seem to imply that the Ryanair landing was particularly hard. It is by far the best (safest) landing in the video, and not particularly hard. Though I suppose most didn't notice that the shock absorbers compressed twice: first on the initial touchdown, then more as the spoilers deployed.

Ryanair actually picks the safe choice considering the weather circumstances - land and not risk a go-around or runway overrun
There's actually a strong safety point in a way Ryanair pilots bumping their planes into runway. Look up Red Wings 9268 Tu-204 crash in Moscow. The pilots performed super smooth touchdown, but due to strong side wind, one of the landing gear carts hasn't properly fixed in position. This caused onboard computer to fail all the braking procedures - engaging reverse thrust and deploying interceptors into braking position. The plane crashed into airport fence and rolled onto highway behind it.
That landing by Ryanair likely wasn't even a "hard" landing. And it's always best to prioritize getting the plane down and passengers safely to their destination than absolute passenger comfort. You wouldn't decide against a go around because some passengers might be uncomfortable or frustrated by it.
The 380 landing looked very smooth.

@@MrBunny53 if you happen to know already feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, im not a pilot or expert by any right but I think my thinking here isn't baseless. 737s are pretty small and light and inherently hard to land because they're more susceptible to things like wind. By floating what you're doing is allowing the plane to spend more time in a state where its vulnerable to disturbances or something to go wrong which could result in a go around (maybe dangerous isn't the right word for that reason). As a pilot your goal is to get the plane planted to the ground quickly and by the book, where your only concerns are safety and efficiency. Being able to float for longer also implies the plane has excess speed, something that may result in uncomfortable or possibly dangerous bouncing. The plane should come down and stay down, and variables should be minimized.
edit: something else that came to mind is that floating means you'll overfly much more runway, leaving less runway for braking should things maybe go wrong.

Happened to me 4 years ago, got on a plane with winds at 50km/h at ground level, literally had my trolley suspended in air while boarding due to the wind, did one hour of flight and at the landing the wind was making the plane roll quite a bit, the last I think 4/5 metres were done like a divebomb, the pilot obviously couldn't risk touching the runway with a wing, yet we made like a 5cm jump on the seats from the hit
All in all quite a memorable experience
