The Bruneleschi Dome was my best experience in Florence. Do this visit 1st thing in the morning. Michael Angelo's David is a must visit. Access to other museums was impossible due to the large crowds of tourists.
21:16 Rick got this one wrong (at least a little) the statue was originally going to be on a roof and he wanted the hand to look like the right size from the angle it was viewed from; then they decided to place it elsewhere.
there were a number of reasons for the italian renaissance. mostly it was bc of the crusades (Islam had all the ancient Greek and Roman writings) and the fall of Constantinople (thus educated refugees from the ancient eastern roman capital). this brought all the classic thought and culture back to Italy. Marco Polo also bringing back all his knowledge of the far East was a major factor as well.
wow, when was this filmed...specifically Donatello's David? When we were there in 2022 it was on a high pedestal, not so close to the ground, no way to see it up close.
Michelangelo knew a studied anatomy. David is a pubescent boy that is still growing. Hence large hands, head and long limbs. Fancy interpretations and symbolism are likely a conjecture
Thank you. Been to Florence once and I'm not going to forget it. This film brings memories. Greetings from Poland, Mr Steves.
Thanks Rick Steves for coming back. I hope I can go there in Europe 🙏
Beautiful and grateful to those artists but also to Rick Steves for bringing this to our homes.
Your channel is amazing! Perfect for my curiosity, love of aesthetics and architecture 😍👍👍👍

You kinda have to plan ahead and reserve a time slot. But I got into the David museum simply by standing there 20 minutes before opening time.
Thank you
Rick Steves is back!! Hurray🎉
Love you from wayand kerala
For hardcore Medieval Italian history I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series
Man that channel looks like a gold mine for the curious among us! Got any more such recommendations? Definitley checking Schwerpunkt out.
Even Rick Steves overlooked one of the fathers of the Renaissance: Splinter.
