I clocked in so many hours on PH-mostly because no matter how hard I tried, only every 100th attempt at drawing an hourglass in the Bellum fight actually worked 😭
There’s a reply on this thread that shows up in my notifications but mysteriously isn’t here when I come to read the whole thing but to clarify for anyone who may have had this thought: I was drawing a figure eight just like the game said. Not the hourglass on the door shape from earlier in the game. It actually ended up being my DS-when I got a DSi and tried it then, it worked every time. So. If you were playing a DS lite it’s possible your bottom screen was worn out/had dead zones like mine apparently did
Really makes it feel like the developers had previous games in mind, and didn't just invent them for the game. The universe expanding not only in width, but in depth.
This was the first Zelda Game I ever played, I remember that it was a summer day, I was staying at my grandma’s house, and she got a bunch of returned DS games, and this was the first game of those I played, and I loved it
I’m not sure if this is present in the main game. Since I am yet to play it. But Bellum is even more terrifying in the Phantom Hourglass manga SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA! It’s really good, so i recommend reading it. The ghost ship wasn’t made by Bellum, but cursed by him. And it was the ship where Linebeck worked. When it got cursed, Linebeck took the only escape boat and left the rest of the crew to wander the cursed ship forever. Which was why Linebeck wanted to find the ghost ship. Since he left his friends there to die. It was actually really gruesome and graphic and made Bellum even more terrifying
So happy to see that finally one of the big guys started covering the lesser known Zeldas. Hope you continue covering more of them, the big ones have been over covered by now, imo. Id like to see some regarding Zelda II esp.
Bit of a wild tangent, but I like to think I have an idea of where Bellum came from. It's possible that Bellum was just a normal squid at one point. As we know, time spent in the realm of the ocean king is not the same as time spent in the world of Hyrule. It's possible that it could be an afterlife for those at sea, however so much time has passed, it's just 'life' for the people there, not the 'afterlife'. Oshus, the Ocean King, was possibly worshipped as a shepherd who would gather souls lost at sea and bring them there. It's possibly why there's so much hourglass symbolism in the temple - reminiscent of Death's hourglass. When time runs out, you are claimed by death. Oshus, however, arrives at that moment to bring you to his realm, where people can live in peace. And what source of malice died out at - or rather under - the great sea? Ganondorf. In the time spent between the end of Windwaker and the beginning of Phantom Hourglass, Ganondorf was probably brought to the realm of the ocean king, and with him, his malice. Something went wrong, however, and that malice worked to inhabit a form that could drain life force. Once it found a suitable host, Bellum, it latched on and changed it, feeding on smaller prey until it was strong enough to take on the Ocean King himself. At that point, he fed. Fed to spread the malice, the influence he had. Once he had enough power, he made the ghost ship to travel between the realms and steal more souls, and eventually Tetra, like you said. This could have been an intelligent choice to actively seek out Zelda, and reclaim the power that was once in Ganondorf's hands. With that, he may have been strong enough to return to the realm of Hyrule, with far more souls to feed upon.
by comparission majora seems even scarier i think: as majora seems to be the ONLY evil entity that never sought out the life force, neither as triforce, gratitude or any other powers similar or same to it. It was already powerful enough O_O
Pardon me, but I just came up with a theory. What if malice-like powers are just the basic powers of demons and other magics may be just be learned? Bellum needed to put his entire form into possessing the ghost ship while Ganon was able to send blasts of malice to possess the sheikah tech in Hyrule. This leads me to believe that the power of the malice used by a demon correlates to the power of the demon making/using it. "A simple yet quite unbreakable spell" in Ganon's case while Bellum is presumably not as powerful as this universe's version of Satan/Lucifer .
How much did it cost? I know the two main sellers of capture cards for the 3DS went out of business or stopped making boards, and used units go for a fortune on eBay.
It just occured to me, we do fight something that is sucking the life-force out of a creature and it literally has a weakspot of just an eye.... Ghoma.
It’s kinda cool to see one of my favorite games on the ds get a theory. Bellum always seemed kinda unique as far as Zelda enemies go but it does seem reasonable that he would share some connection to familiar foes, power-wise
I wasn't super convinced throughout the video, although I thought it was a really fun theory. Then you mentioned that last detail and it kinda pushed me over the edge, very well executed!
bellum's always been my favorite villain. he goes down swinging, first he fights you, runs away because he knows he cant beat you and you have to chase him down, then when you catch him he commits to a last stand. epic imo
Assume the Sands of Hours is the physical manifestation of life force and the purple goop in Breath of the Wild is the physical manifestation of Malice. What if all beings are made of life force, but in evil beings such as Ganon or Bellum, some of that life force is transformed into Malice? This would explain why in at least Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild (those being the only Zeldas I’ve played personally), when you kill enemies or bosses they die in a sort of purple explosion. In Phantom Hourglass, they also explode into the Sands of Hours. These bursts of material are their Malice and life force leaving the dead monster.
I love the Ocean King's theme in the outro. It's one of the most underrated themes in the Zelda series. Also, by your logic, the Triforce itself would be a form of life force, the life force of the goddesses and, by definition, the most powerful manifestation of life force to ever exist, so powerful that it can grant any wish.
This remains one of my favourite theories. The DS Zelda's go severely underrated, and this pulls everything together, I can't help but keep returning to this whenever I need something to watch 🙏
I am SO glad you made this! Phantom Hourglass was the first Zelda I ever played and I've always seen it as so mysterious and an untapped source of lore so this video is something I'd been looking for for years!
Also, when you run out of sand of time, you just take damage meaning the temple is taking you LIFE force Oh no, I just realized that your carrying Oshus in your pocket all the time
Not only does Bellum translate to war, but it can also be translated to 'clothes' or 'to wear clothes', much like how Bellum wears Linebeck sort of like a suit later on in the game. I don't know whether or not this was intentional, but it's definitely pretty cool!
For such a light-hearted Zelda Game like Phantom Hourglass, Bellum is definitely one of the darkest villains in the franchises. (He's up there with Majora)
I thought phantom hourglass was so addicting. But when I finally faced bellum it was definitely creepy to see him possess someone. Ganondorf did it when he possessed Zelda, but for some reason it was creepier in phantom hourglass
Yes!! Finally an in depth video on the DS titles! People always write these games off as too simple or having aged poorly... I’m grateful to you for recognizing them :D *imagine I’m giving you a force gem right now*
Wait... Was that it? Has Life Force / Light Force been the missing 4th Triforce piece this entire time? The power of the gods is incomplete without the power of mortals!?
NintendoBlackCrisis Not quite. While you did mention that the Light Force and Life Force are implied to be the same given the Japanese name, this would be canonically, since it would imply a contradiction. The Gratitude Stones, which according to your theory, are a crystallization of Life Force, existed at least since the events of Skyward Sword. However, the Light Force originates from the Minish in the Minish Cap, who have only been shown to exist in this game. Since the events of the Minish Cap occur centuries after those of Skyward Sword, at least according to the official encyclopedia by Nintendo, this would mean the Light Force would not have existed for as long as the Life Force. Furthermore, even if they were one and the same force, this has absolutely nothing to do with the Triforce. In Japanese, the Triforce is simply known as Toraiforsu, which is the Romaji for the Japonification of the word, and as such, it has no semantic connections to the Japanese word for force used in the games, especially because even if Force were just to be Forsu, Torai is not a real Japanese prefix, making it semantically meaningless. This, combined with the fact that the existence of the fourth Triforce piece has been deconfirmed, is simply sufficient to show that there is no real connection. At least not yet, anyway. Maybe the sequel to Breath of the Wild will change this, but until this happens, there is no affirmative conclusion to be made here. At best, if you can indeed establish for sure that the Light Force and the Life Force are just one and the same, all this proves is that there exists an essence known as Malice, and another known as Force, and the former originates from the Demon Tribe, and the latter from the Goddess Tribe. And this is a significant discovery, but not quite anything like the confirmation of the "missing piece of the Triforce." If anything, the triangle in the middle that is empty is simply a consequence of the geometry of triangles. There is no way to group three equilateral triangles to form a composite, larger equilateral triangle with such a gap. And since the shape of the Triforce is supposed to reflect its relationship to the triforce pieces, this is the only shape it could have taken in. Calling it another piece is interesting, but a big stretch, as you yourself have discussed in previous videos.
@@angelmendez-rivera351 well yeah. All of this makes sense from a rational point of view, but nintendo has not make sense of a coherent, logical plot devices, they are trying as best as they can to reboot the lore retelling with BoTW... thats why its in its own timeline.Although I understand that to make an affirmative conclussion is not entirely reasonable, Nintendo has always gone their way... in short, making an affirmation even it it doesnt fit cannon is still valid as a theory, otherwise the story could be easily predicted. Its very likely that nintendo will use a plot device that is not enitrely coherent with previous canonic data, just to push the franchise gameplay where they want...just an opinion. They are not just going to tell you a conclusive story easily as it a very large part of zeldas selling put its in fact its ambiguous, mysterious, incoherent fragments that hook the lore nerds, casual or not, to the game.
I think instead of the missing fourth piece, it’s just the combined general power of the golden goddesses, or perhaps the power of Hylia. I think this could explain where the power behind the light arrows comes from, and also the light sprits from Twilight Princess (who might be physical manifestations of life force themselves).
A very interesting look at a villain that probably should get mentioned more. And the whole force concept does tie into the greater Zelda story overall. A fun thing that looking into one game like this just continues to draw connections to a variety of others. Obviously wouldn't be much fun if Bellum won, but it's a good discussion.
And here I thought the theory was that Bellum was sucking the life out of the Wind Fish, who in turn, dragged Link into the dream to save him from Bellum before it was too late. A Bellum that can suck life energy from dreams is truly terrifying!
Bellum is kinda like the early version of Calamity Ganon. Chaotic, hungry for power, but lacking the sentience and wit of Ganondorf, yet still having the power mad capability of creating armies.
No joke I found this game in the middle of a parking lot at Walmart. I was maybe 7 at the time and I took it home and booted it up in my ds. I played that game for hours and I still have it. I still have my original save. It was the first game in the series I played and it got me started on the Zelda addiction I have now lol
Bellum is malice incarnated into a Majora style monster... perhaps, they could have teamed up, considering a theory that I support very highly, being that Majora’s Mask is actually Ghirahim imprisoned into a mask, with Ganondorf being the reincarnation of Demise, and Ghirahim being his second in command, it could be how the malice was formed. This ties into BoTW 2’s main theory of it being about time traveling into when the seal broke and malice entered the place.
Another thing I noticed. The most frightening antagonists in games and stories like these... have the same eldritch properties of the monsters and malevolent gods of Lovecraft.
I absolutely ADORE phantom hourglass!! I suppose I’m biased since it was my first game you know??? All the happy childhood nostalgia . Anyway I’m just so happy to see it get more recognition recently.
This is my favourite theory of yours so far! Not only did you talk about phantom hourglass but you tied up the force gems! Maybe even my favourite Zelda theory!
Perhaps the reason that Malice creatures are so often assosciated with eyes and curses is because of the "Evil Eye," a type of curse said to be inflicted upon others with one's ill will.
Phantom Hourglass was my first Zelda game, so, I'm really glad to see a theory on the first Zelda Villain I ever faced! Tho man this goes so deep! Makes me wanna replay Phantom Hourglass but I feel like I can't see it the same way now XD
The manga adaption gives Bellum some self-awareness, yet still carries out his atrocities to fuel his sadistic appetite. Even after taking his life force, Bellum would still drain more from Oshus, slowly killing him. Forced out of Linebeck's body, Bellum would drag the Ocean King down further into the depths of the sea in an attempt to kill him.
the way phantom hourglass is the only other zelda game i played ever so far other than botw which i just started weeks ago yet i was so OBSESSED with that game as a child omg and i recently found out that this is actually one of the most unpopular games in the fandom which kinda makes me sad :(
I love seeing so many fellow DS game fans! I've gotten a lot of flack from people for the sole reason of LIKING them, and I'm glad to see that others started in this series just like I did. I wish the adult timeline got more love; I'm writing a novelization of the games.
Could this mean that the Triforce is actually the three goddesses life force? That when they finished creating the world and “left”, they actually died, and their life force materialised into three extra powerful force gems, with enough power to grant the wish of anyone who touched them?
Phantom hour glass was my first Zelda game, and first real game aside from asteroids, so no matter how crappy the graphics, how boring the gameplay, or how unimportant to the story, it will always hold a special place in my heart...
For all we know, seeing as Bellum disappeared like any of the other created monsters, he was one himself. Maybe poor Vaati, atvthe bottom of the ocean, was trying to send out demons to regain power for him lol
My first and favorite zelda game was phantom hourglass and it's hard to describe but it was really important to me cause it was that first game that made me feel that really special kind of childlike wonder that was just in awe of the wide open that was yours to explore and travel through and just staring at that opening screen and diving into a journey that was equally beautiful as it was terrifying
When you feel like a Zelda theory nailed something. I think this is pretty solid. How many games have connections. SS, MC, FS, Oot, FSA, PH, ST, and there could be others as well. It could also quite possibly be how MM gained so much power, but I don't have any evidence to back that up, but considering that the triforce isn't once listed. In fact, for the FD mask, it says that it is as if "all the memories of the people in termina" are in the mask. The Fused Shadows absorbed Zant, so it could be that too, but honestly I can't say. The one timeline that this has taken a back seat on is the downfall timeline, also Wind Waker. The triforce could also be part of the life force of the gods. Actually now that I think about it, there is one game in the downfall timeline, one that received a very recent remake. Link's awakening. Koholint island very well could be created by the Wind fish's life force. I know it's a dream of the wind ship, but then how did link end up there. It is another world created by the wind fish in his sleep, and his life force was drained to make the island, keeping him asleep.Perhaps the instruments were major pieces of his life force and at a certain point, he has enough life force to take back the rest of it. Unless you get the true ending, in which case Marin stays. Most of this is just baseless speculation, but still.
Did you just make the Zelda Theory of Everything?! Seriously this connects to everything!
Tbh this felt like the beginning of a NintendoBlackCrisis cinematic universe 🤣

There’s a reply on this thread that shows up in my notifications but mysteriously isn’t here when I come to read the whole thing but to clarify for anyone who may have had this thought: I was drawing a figure eight just like the game said. Not the hourglass on the door shape from earlier in the game. It actually ended up being my DS-when I got a DSi and tried it then, it worked every time. So. If you were playing a DS lite it’s possible your bottom screen was worn out/had dead zones like mine apparently did
seeing the connections and reference between the different zelda games is really cool and satisfying to find out
Same! This video has opened up a new world of Zelda theories! Zelda TH-camrs need to talk about the DS games more, in my opinion.
Well, all (official) Zelda games are connected.
Really makes it feel like the developers had previous games in mind, and didn't just invent them for the game. The universe expanding not only in width, but in depth.
This was the first Zelda Game I ever played, I remember that it was a summer day, I was staying at my grandma’s house, and she got a bunch of returned DS games, and this was the first game of those I played, and I loved it
Ah, Bellum. My favorite boss of Zelda History, finally getting the recognition he deserves.
Glad my boy Bellum's getting some love. That thing terrified me as a kid, but I still really respected it's design!
I’m not sure if this is present in the main game. Since I am yet to play it. But Bellum is even more terrifying in the Phantom Hourglass manga
SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA!
What about linebecks ex?
@@zixvirzjghamn737Jolene?, in the manga she is just kinda there and force Zaus to forge the Phantom Sword
Hope you all enjoy the last video for the Spooktober season! Now if you'll excuse me I have a 3DS Capture Card to test...
I do wonder if Ghoma and Bellum are kinda related. Both did sap away power and have a similiar eye.
by comparission majora seems even scarier i think: as majora seems to be the ONLY evil entity that never sought out the life force, neither as triforce, gratitude or any other powers similar or same to it.
Hint hint wink wink 😉
How much did it cost? I know the two main sellers of capture cards for the 3DS went out of business or stopped making boards, and used units go for a fortune on eBay.
It just occured to me, we do fight something that is sucking the life-force out of a creature and it literally has a weakspot of just an eye.... Ghoma.
YES!!! No one ever talks about Phantom Hourglass!
Ahhh such an underrated game and villain! Love this!
bellum's always been my favorite villain. he goes down swinging, first he fights you, runs away because he knows he cant beat you and you have to chase him down, then when you catch him he commits to a last stand.
In OoT and MM, enemies burst into flames. A small, but similar detail.
@@michealforguson5317 and for other skyward sword & Twilight princess they explode in black/purple too
I love the Ocean King's theme in the outro.
Bellum is terrifying just look at it tentacles
Some people like that, I hear.
Warm Lillie oh no I know where this is going

NO THANK YOU
Warm Lillie ... yeah like looks can kill.
I am glad this game got some love from you xD hope to see more in the future, as well as spirit tracks.
I know right? The adult time line is my favorite. I'm writing a novelization of the games.
I know everyone else has said this, but is so nice to see this game get some love. Thank you as always for the fantastic work!
Now that I think about it. The ocean king is a Whale and Bellum is a Giant Squid. Both Sea Creature that are rumored to do battle beneath the depths
Bellum is a literal god eating squid who can latch itself onto people to control them, absolutely terrifying
Finally a youtuber that mentions phantom hourglass without shiting on it
Also, when you run out of sand of time, you just take damage meaning the temple is taking you LIFE force
Oh no, I just realized that your carrying Oshus in your pocket all the time
Linebeck mentions the temple does this when you first meet him too
Not only does Bellum translate to war, but it can also be translated to 'clothes' or 'to wear clothes', much like how Bellum wears Linebeck sort of like a suit later on in the game.
: O
I'm sure that it is, "force" is probably what the empty middle of the triforce is supposed to represent.
I like calling the DS Zeldas the hidden Gems of the series
You spelt gems wrong
They are great but imo the Oracle ones are totaly hidden gems of the series
Gamer Guru thanks 😊
Bellum is kinda like the early version of Calamity Ganon. Chaotic, hungry for power, but lacking the sentience and wit of Ganondorf, yet still having the power mad capability of creating armies.
Great video here. Bellum is my favourite Zelda villain so it's nice to see someone giving him some much needed attention.
Dude. The creators of the story of Zelda are pure geniuses. My GOOOD
So uh, might that imply the Triforce is the Golden Goddess’ “Force”?
Yes.
It's all coming together now.
I love the DS games! I’m really glad your making theories about them. Great theory! I hope they expand upon this Life Force in future games.
This is my favourite theory of yours so far! Not only did you talk about phantom hourglass but you tied up the force gems! Maybe even my favourite Zelda theory!
That Ganon battery idea, though mentioned in passing, floored me.
That dead head turning and eyes glowing was the scariest part of this whole video
Really cool! This was my 2nd Zelda game! I miss Linebeck, at least he got an island of his own in BotW.
His island has a single tree and korok.
Perhaps the reason that Malice creatures are so often assosciated with eyes and curses is because of the "Evil Eye," a type of curse said to be inflicted upon others with one's ill will.
He‘s that horrific?
Didn‘t know that but thanks thumbnail!

Phantom Hourglass was my introduction to the Zelda series. It’s a seriously underrated game
My first handheld Zelda ❤️
I had alot of fun playing it along with ST.
I'm just happy to see spirit tracks and phantom hour glass being explored more
Phantom Hourglass was my first Zelda game, so, I'm really glad to see a theory on the first Zelda Villain I ever faced!
PH and ST are GEMS. I still remember opening up ST on Christmas in 2009. I miss those days
the way phantom hourglass is the only other zelda game i played ever so far other than botw which i just started weeks ago yet i was so OBSESSED with that game as a child omg and i recently found out that this is actually one of the most unpopular games in the fandom which kinda makes me sad :(
I love seeing so many fellow DS game fans! I've gotten a lot of flack from people for the sole reason of LIKING them, and I'm glad to see that others started in this series just like I did.
I wish the adult timeline got more love; I'm writing a novelization of the games.
This game introduced me to the Zelda series and I instantly became a fan.
Could this mean that the Triforce is actually the three goddesses life force? That when they finished creating the world and “left”, they actually died, and their life force materialised into three extra powerful force gems, with enough power to grant the wish of anyone who touched them?
i always thought bellum was called that because cerebellum
The game that planted the seed of my fondness for video games, Zelda games in particular.
Phantom hourglass is pretty good and under appreciated. I played it ALOT back in the DS days. Linebeck was a great character, a funny guy.
My first Zelda game will always hold a special spot in my heart
Bellum’s parasitic nature also reminds me of Biolyte from Skyward Sword, the monster who infected Levias.
I'm surprised this video only has 200k+ views. I believe it deserves way more than that. This was a fun watch!
That thumbnail is so well drawn, is it official art or fanart?
Phantom hour glass was my first Zelda game, and first real game aside from asteroids, so no matter how crappy the graphics, how boring the gameplay, or how unimportant to the story, it will always hold a special place in my heart...
Just gonna point this out, the bellum is a similar name to the beldam the monster from coraline who eats the life force of children think about that
For all we know, seeing as Bellum disappeared like any of the other created monsters, he was one himself. Maybe poor Vaati, atvthe bottom of the ocean, was trying to send out demons to regain power for him lol
I love that Bellum's first battle theme incorporates the Light Dungeon theme from Link to the Past for some reason.

Word. Of all the enemies, this guy isn't scary at all.
