  • The small town of Wilmington, Ohio, was devastated in 2008 when DHL left and took more than 7,000 jobs with it. As the town tries to claw its way back, the Post explains why Donald Trump's election victory has brought it new life.

      That's how Republican politicians recruit these voters. They dream of one day being rich, so rich that you don't have to work. Unfortunately, the legislation that Republican politicians pass is only focused on keeping the rich people rich. Republican Politicians are not interested in helping poor people become rich.

    • @gamerpedia1535

      Honestly, I've been developing Conservative views but mainly because I feel like the government is overreaching and because it also seems like we have a lot of unnecessary taxes. Those are the main two reasons but this means I've been leaning more towards the Republican side. Personally, I don't think you should classify all/most Republicans as wanting to be rich but not confronting the fact that they're poor for 2 reasons. The first one being that my dad, for instance, grew up in a really poor family and has worked hard his entire life to get to the point where he is now. He now resides in the upper-middle class and he's not looking towards being rich even though he's not swimming in cash. My second reason is that it's natural to wish for things in life. Poor people are likely going to wish to be rich. This doesn't mean that they can't face their own reality/situation. I can agree that most politicians are in it for the money/self-gain but I don't agree that poor Republicans can't face their own poverty. I could be wrong though so feel free to debate me.

Technology has made it so that one farm can feed tens of thousands of people. Going back to individual farming may seem romantic to you, but it's not practical and it's not even possible for most people. If you're out of work and don't own land, where are you going to grow vegetables and raise pigs and cows? And how are you going to take care of your family while you're waiting for the first season's crops to come in? What about money? You'd have to grow enough food to sell most of it in order to buy clothes, pay your mortgage, etc. Or maybe you intend to shear your sheep and make clothes to send your kids to school in. Thats why large companies are a bad idea. Lots of small, independently operating businesses ensure there can never be large scale economy collapses like this.

    • @BelowAverageRazzleDazzle

      Small companies lack the capital to make investments required for building things like a 747 though or a submarine. Or build the infrastructure necessary to deliver electricity or natural gas. It's not realistic to expect that an economy can survive with only small businesses.

    Governors, state senators and mayors have a lot more influence over local economies than Presidents. A state has to carefully pick it law makers. They have to be out lobbying businesses, creating incentives, creating jobs for the states. Kick your local reps in the ass and make them do their job by attracting work into your areas or kick them out of office.

    What blows my mind is that there seems to be an unwillingness by small town folks to adapt and follow opportunity.
    I grew up in a rural farming area. It was fairly clear growing up that farming was no longer profitable so we (my cohort in high school) went to university, community college or got a trade. Of the 20ish people I hung out with 3 stayed and honestly they are the least happy out of the bunch of us.
    Point is industry will come and go depending upon market forces well outside the control of the average citizen. Professionally people have to be adaptable and maintain relevance. The best way to do that is to train/be licenced in a field you enjoy which isn't going anywhere (think plumbing or medical) if you want to stay in your rural area. If you are willing to relocate, particularly to more urban centres the options are endless.
    Electing a Republican or Democrat or and Independent won't make a lick of difference.

    • @Kfrench0661
      @Kfrench0661 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      1) This guy seems to have adapted to the best of his ability. 2) A lot of people are really too old to adapt. What happens when your town's industry suddenly disappears and you are 55, not 25? 3) Many people aren't smart. If physical labor is replaced by machine labor, and until AI is installed in everything, you need to be either pretty smart (not just to be able to learn how to do something, but to learn what is the best thing to do) or creative to make it. 4) Many people are naturally tied to the geography they are in. Aging parents, kids in school, kids with an ex spouse.
      I agree you have to adapt to market forces. You don't have a choice. But these people see trade agreements and high taxes as a reason why many manufacturing jobs are leaving, and they aren't wrong about that. Automation is going to make most of our current jobs irrelevant, and might not give us new ones to replace them. In the meantime, people better make what money they can and invest in the corporations that will continue to turn a profit whether they hire labor or not.

      +icin4d. I don't know for sure. But it's something to think about. Certainly there are some people that could retrain themselves to do anything. But some of intelligence is speed at which you can learn. And the rate of learning for some folks is very slow. Although I'm sure you can be slower at some activities and faster at others. I'm certainly not a wiz in math, for example, but I can still learn it. Does that mean I can be an MIT physics PhD if I just try? I don't know

    • @thenobleandmightybeaver4411
      @thenobleandmightybeaver4411 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Joe Schmoe - There is a monumental difference between attaining a PhD and learning how to be a phlebotomist. Let's not talk about extremes that apply to 0.001% of the population.
      There are plenty of jobs which do not require that a person be a fast learner to train for. You don't have to particularly academic for most of the trades, there are medical/care related jobs that are not super academically challenging, there are service industry jobs. A lot of technical community college programs are not difficult academically either.
      Just because a person isn't a fast learner doesn't mean they won't be a good employee either. A good work ethic, reliability and commitment go a long way. I am a manager in a STEM field industry; I would take an honest hard worker any day of a lazy naturally talented one. I got a guy on my team a few years ago that was a slow learner; he took twice as long to learn the work than the average employee. He was in his 50's and not very tech savvy. Once we got him trained up he ended up being one of my strongest analysts.

    The biggest hindrance to rural America is education. Alot of them don't have degrees or even high school diplomas. Jobs are becoming more advanced with technology factories aren't what they use to be. Back then it was acceptable to drop out of school to make money for your family. Now with jobs becoming more advanced rural America is being left behind. Trumps problem is he promised to bring jobs back but never specifically said how. If you really want to help rural America bring training programs and education to them so they can learn and become qualified with these new jobs and be able to provide for there family. There's alot of good folks in rural America despite what the news likes to say about them.

      Trump knew this it was all a trick to get his corp friends and himself tax breaks that is the real reason and at the same time he is working for Jewish out in the middle east. His agenda is clearly same as always the middle east not America. 2018 started with him addressing what? IRAN. MAGA is just a sales pitch now he sold his idea and we see it was a lemon.

      Peter Haslam the game is about progressing. There is no more rust belt, manufacturing will be for the machines -- automation, a.i. Human will basically become a mere supplement to the labor force. In light of it all, we will develop new fields of work, and you should pursue things you actually like doing. Be a creator, that's what humans do. Create, invent and learn. Learn how to program, learn how to be an engineer, and yes you can learn the arts too.
      There is no set plan fot what the midwest needs to do other than progress and travel new avenues that can be built upon.

    • @Clawzoftime
      @Clawzoftime 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Peter Haslam but i do have a prediction...
      Most of the population is being squeezed out of the rural areas and the government wants you to be part of 'mega cities' or super cities.
      This will be inevitable. The rural areas in some few decades from now will be for the rich.
      Those California wildfires are no accident. Those are very nice homes but...
      It is possible that we are paying China debt through 'eminent domain'. Much like the chinese beverly hills you are seeing rising, you will see chinese conttinue to grow and own California. The U.S sold California, you just don't know it. The whole 'wall' idea should have been a hint for most people, who is known for their wall? The great wall of china.
      It sounds irrational, but look at the world, i wouldn't be quick to dismiss this. I have no ill regards towards Chinese I like Chinese people and i hold no bias here.

      Peter H. This is what's up. Corporations replacing local business. Actual robots working for the corporations. Family farms being bought by corporations (ADM etc) We are seeing the logical and absurd conclusion of unfettered capitalism here. Corporations want lower wages but still want to sell to a populace who is out of work, due in large part to the corporate interference in local economies. The corporations also want you to vote their interests, and in the Midwest, you mostly do. It's unreal.

    here's what i don't get: wilmington ohio is 20 miles from dayton, 50 miles from columbus. easy commutes. lots of jobs. lots of good high-pay government jobs. why move? why even care if one industry leaves town? these people gave up too quickly

    Wilmington OH is a little over 50 miles from Cincinnati, where there are plenty of jobs. That is a lengthy commute, but not an impossible one. If people in Wilmington were struggling after the departure of DHL, they could have sought jobs in the metro Cincy area and still lived in their quaint town.
    When I was hurting for a job in my field in 2006, I secured a position that paid $55,000, but was 57 miles away. I sucked it up and did it. My quality of life went down, but I didn;t have to deplete my savings accounts nor did i have to move my family.

      @Alexander Amazon is only a behemoth in e-commerce. In retail as a whole, Amazon is just 4% of US total. That does not make a monopoly. Walmart does more harm to small towns mom and pop stores than Amazon does. But it just goes to show people's priorities these days. People will order cornflakes from Amazon because it is 50c cheaper and drive past their local stores. And then complain that Amazon is a monopoly.

      Every person is vulnerable to these politicians whether it was Obama, trump or Biden and Kamala Harris haha. @@pattycarljackson This is a very important conversation. I am first generation US born, of West Indian parents, and I have lived on the east coast, from NY to FL for my entire life, so I cannot relate to the issues of rural USA. Please forgive this question if it is ignorant, inconsiderate or insensitive, but if there is no opportunity in rural America, why not relocate?

    • @pattycarljackson
      @pattycarljackson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dfindlay6203 no it isn’t ignorant at all, I used to say that all of the time, why not relocate. I’ve watched many videos about rural American and a lot of these places people have lived here for generations and it is their home and a lot of them are farmers and farm corn or cotton and these town can’t just die off. The corn and cotton grown here is being used or eaten by all of us on the coasts but we seldom realize that and don’t often care. This isn’t toward you but I have always felt that people on the coasts are more ignorant and uneducated then those they call ignorant and uneducated from rural America and know about the land and how to fend for themselves and make the most from what they have rather then having it always handed.

    • @dfindlay6203
      @dfindlay6203 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pattycarljackson I will agree that most of us on the coasts are uneducated concerning land, and growing food, which is definitely a needed skill. While we may have more "technical" skills, and "street smarts", (IMO) citizens in rural areas are more likely to survive if everything shut down. If our grocery stores closed, most of us would starve. With such a diverse and wide-spread population in this country, how do you propose the federal government meet ALL of our needs? Just as important, how much responsibility do the elected leaders in our local governments have in our day-to-day living situations? IMO, I feel that we place too much on the shoulders of the federal government, and not enough on the local government. The comparison between the lives of rural and urban citizens is a great example. Our challenges are vastly different, so how can the federal government possibly address the concerns of each and every town in the USA?

To think politicians on either side give a f about you is deceiving ones self. And with automation that has been evolving since the 70's those jobs are becoming less and less. Not only here but even in other countries where labor is cheap. The goal of the top percent earners is to have all the money and for us to have none or gravel and do their bidding. Plain and simple. And they pit us Americans against each other based on our emotional response to the bs that is coming out of their mouths. Goodluck guys.

But at the end of the day, it was all in vain. All to help Trump get his name in a history book. Making America great again was a bridge too far.

      corporate tax rate cut alone doesn't simulate business. It is also access yo markets, which Trump is shutting down due to his ill informed "trade war" It is access to workers, skilled young ones which he doesn't want due to his war on migration. It is access to loans whose interest rates are going up due to uncertainty he has created, and it is also access to customers, which is is destroying by waging war against the middle class, skyrocketing health care costs, housing costs, and fuel prices, removing disposable income. So your answer is poor and reflective to the stupidity plaguing our nation

      "MOVE" is a very easy recommendation but not everyone has the resources to effect a move to where more jobs are. Some people may be shackled to their area due to caring for aging parents, lack of money, no friends or relatives to help them out, etc. And moving is a big risk for a lot of people. After the terrible recession that the nation went through, I guess that many people don't have a lot of stomach for taking risks after getting burned when the economy tanked....

      @sdwputnam The town is still recovering, but things are certainly looking up steadily. Housing values have started to rise in the area and many projects have been put into place to improve roads and gas lines. Amazon has finally begun a first round of hiring though many people have taken to commuting to Cincinnati and Dayton areas for work. The downtown area has come alive again with new shops and social events and even the Kroger in town got a face lift to include a new Starbucks. I think that the most important change is that people here actually believe that recovery is possible, and that belief alone has been a catalyst for progress and increased value within the community. I'm a 30 year old army veteran who was born and raised here, and while I have been all over the world, I can honestly say that I am proud of my small town and I am grateful to see it coming back to life.
