I Went To The Most Liberal Place In West Virginia

- You aren't gonna believe this part of West Virginia!
This is not your normal West Virginia. We’re in Morgantown, home to West Virginia University. It’s by far the most liberal place in this state. You could actually draw a circle for 500 miles and not find a higher concentration of Democrats.
People in Morgantown take pride in being ‘different’ then the rest of West Virginia. The liberals here’ll tell ya - we’re educated and a lot of us have good jobs. We have big world aspirations. We’re not dumb chew spitting inbred hicks.
I’m here because I wanted to see what it was like and talk to some of the people who live here in this mysterious, rare liberal land.
This was day 3 on my great Appalachian adventure, and the first stop in West Virginia - the only state that’s completely in the Appalachian region. We’re gonna spend the next four stops here in the mountain state. There’s plenty of time to see poverty and rundown and the effects of drugs. But we’re gonna begin in a different type of place. I think.

I’m so sick of people trashing WV and the people. That poor guy living in a shanty would be the first person to scoop you off the road as you lay dying.
He probably also has green teeth.
@@holdenc3082 I bet you don’t want to find out.
It just shows their ignorance. It’s easy to be a keyboard badass & spew insults at others. Especially when they are totally clueless about what they’re talking about.Makes them feel better about themselves. I just laugh at them. They have no back bone and live a pathetic existence. Just remember-Montani Semper Liberi
But of course he would! His brother ran you down and he's tryin' to hide your body.
You're all just mad that he's right.
Nick all I can say is be careful when interacting and interviewing people, as you never know what they're thinking, or what they'll do next. Not everyone has the ability to agree to disagree.
Hear Hear !!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, and when you’re not from there and they pride themselves on a fighting spirit… 🤔
I think he’s just trying to do his job so he can give us the best Content, but I most definitely agree 100%. Lots of people don’t have the capability to agree or disagree in a healthy way or adult manner. Also, yes, especially when it comes to strangers since there’s little we know about them there’s a chance they could turn violent easily.
Its hard to determine who really is sociable or not. They might have trigger words, but would otherwise be friendly. The previous videos where he interviewed homeless people shows even they can be friendly. But its hard to know who has a "Karen" button, and what subject pushes that button.
Yeah. I agree. Especially intoxicated people. However, I don’t think you come off as aggressive or anything.
I was born and raised in the Appalachians. I'm now in Northern VA but have a lot of family in WV and have followed developments in WV. The issues impacting WV are many and complex.
But here's a simple issue: people don't like condescension and one does not need a college education to recognize it.
After watching this video, I can understand why the "drunk redneck" had his feathers ruffled in the beginning. He likely saw the condescension. Everyone has something of value to say - don't try to engage in conversation if you refuse to recognize that.

He obviously didn't have anything of value to say, not everyone does.

@@justmike6377 "The kid". While you call him smug and antagonistic. Defending the guy dumping his can of chocolate milk on someone cause he couldn't take an opposing opinion. I think a man can disagree with someone without having to pour their drink on them for doing so.
People in West Virginia are sick of outsiders (who know nothing of their lives) poking fun at them. If it makes them overly sensitive to anyone asking questions, I can understand that.

I use to live in Morgantown. Joe Manchins daughter received an MBA from the business school at WVU. She got busted because she never really took the courses. This was one of the most cherry picked videos about West Virginia and particularly Morgantown that I’ve ever seen. You left out that Morgantown is home to a Power 5 University, with research capabilities that are on par with the biggest higher education institutions in the world. You left out that Morgantown has one of the U.S. Government National Labs that is innovating every day to solve the world’s energy problems. You left out the beautiful neighborhoods of Suncrest, Cheat Lake, and the surrounding area that boast multi-million dollar homes and instead showed the run down parts that every city has, regardless of location. You tailored this video to what the vast majority of people’s preconceived notions of what West Virginia is like rather than showing what it truly is; a state with a wide diversity of view points, with people fiercely loyal to it and willing to help almost anyone, regardless of beliefs or differences. I implore you to revisit this and make a video that truly captures what the people stand for. It’s a true shame.

Because wv Is white
In 2022, West Virginia had a firearm death rate of 16.2 per 100,000 people, which is in the bottom half of the country. This is higher than New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, Texas, and Florida. West Virginia also has the 31st-highest rate of gun homicides and gun assaults in the US, with 5.2 homicides and 7.2 assaults per 100,000 people.

I like it when you take risks and get out and talk to real people, even when they make no sense. And I like all the shots of "how this place looks today," whether good or bad. I like that you ask tough questions, and admit that you don't have the answers, either.
West Virginia has lots of charm and contrasts. One of the most beautiful states in america.
I love that there's run down and abandoned places and that the cities didn't grow since the 1950s because that means they didn't tear town the old building and didn't replaced them. The small and mid size mountain towns are beautiful.
Redhead doesn't buy that many eggs if he thinks they're $20 a carton.
He's really talking about the cost of living but can't really explain himself. Just my opinion after watching him
I had to laugh about that too. College kids don't buy their own eggs, so they have no clue. I should know, I have a college kid who loves eggs and thinks they magically appear in the refrigerator.
The one guy sitting there talking about Joe being out to lunch has a good understanding overall.
We have seen Trump's typical lunch menu (McDonalds). Like my neighbors grandchildren, Trump treats his food in a similar fashion: 'Donald Trump threw his lunch against the wall after AG Bill Barr said there was no widespread election fraud, ex-White House aide testifies." Barr has not disputed the event. This country is finished until some people find the courage to acknowledge crime and treason (regardless of party).

Greetings from Brazil, man! I'm absolutely addicted to your channel. It is very good to see all of the nuances in american culture and politics while comparing to Brazil. I've once heard someone say the U.S. is going through a "Brazilification", specially in the most liberal areas, which I agree, since most liberal areas tend to have more lenient criminal laws (like not arresting people that steal goods up to a certain price tag, here in Brazil there isn't legislation about it, but the court system "legislates" on its own even though we come from a Civil Law [Roman tradition] background isntead of a Common Law [Anglo tradition] like you) but on that note, Brazil has been going through a Americanization process with more people fighting for individual freedoms, the right to bear arms, a more open economy, less state, etc.
People here are getting more educated on libertarianism and confronting those ideas with the ideas imposed on us ever since our monarchy fell and the tide is turning. Whereas we used to have elections leaning almost 80% towards the left, the last 2 elections basically ended 51/49. Let's see what the future holds for us, brother. This october I'll go to Canada and I hope to travel to the U.S. someday, love your culture and history and I always wanted to get to know the real USA, as shown in your videos. Keep it up. Sort of off topic, but as a native Brazilian what year would you say Brazil changed for the worse? As in how many years now has Brazil been considered “more dangerous” by outsiders? I’m fascinated by Rio de Janeiro and am curious what caused brazils overall decline besides bad laws / drugs. Christ the redeemer overlooking a crime ridden city is bizarre to me.

They are all scared to really speak their minds, university it teaching them not to think.
Your deadpan delivery sprinkled with delights of sarcasm makes this video hilarious. You Sir should be a comedian. Thank You for everything you do for this channel Nick Johnson.
Well Morgantown sure seems different than the rest of the state. Most of the people I meet in WV are kind, caring, and would take the shirt off their own back to give to you. Same for eastern KY. But maybe I'm saying that just because of the circles I'm in. I say it doesn't really matter what part of the country you're in, you're going to run into some crazy people - and some very kind people.
From my little experience I had with WV, people are very kind and caring.
My car was broken down in WV in a road trip last year. I went to different car parts stores looking for parts that I needed. Everyone I encountered is very nice and caring. They made sure I got everything I needed. Despite, I'm Asian and speak broken English, they are still very nice and kind to help me out.
@@engrishsheep That's wonderful! Yes, I had a similar experience here in KY about 5 min from WV. My truck fell off its ball joint here in the Kroger parking lot, and within 5 minutes or less, several men came out of nowhere, got on their backs and proceeded to give me several different opinions of what was wrong. Two women even came up to me and told me they would pray for me. There are so many good and kind people here. And of course, the people in my church are super friendly.
Good people were just good people before Donald Trump. So So Sad!
@@traceytrotter9934 Trump got them all hooked on meth and weed? Interesting.
@@holdenc3082 He would like to keep them that way.
I enjoyed your geo-political and social video on WV injected with its dose of humor. I'm sorry about the drunk bum that poured the Yoohoo on you. It could have ended worse. Be safe!
I really thought he was going to sash his guitar over Nick’s head.
8:26 "downtown Morgantown" is actually downtown Washington, Pennsylvania, 50 miles to the north along I-79.
Particularly enlightening episode! Thanks Nick and Mappy!
Nick did okay. Mappy is clearly the brains of the operation. 🤷🏻♂️😉
This is a great video and shows real perspective. There's nothing wrong with being a liberal or conservative, but we got the far reaches of each side in powerful places trying to dictate there views that are outside the norms of both groups and "normal" people in general.
Finally a level headed comment
The problem we have with liberals is that most of them have views (and vote) against the constitution and what this country was founded on. So many of them just virtue signal the latest "current thing" in the BlackRock/Vanguard-owned media. Then they vote themselves into insane taxes and then flee to cheaper states, then do it all over again like locusts. I've lived all over the country and have seen it happen over and over again... Republicans suck too though, and "conservative" politicians haven't conserved a single thing.
I spent a year living in Morgantown (as a non-College student adult) and loved it. One of the best places I've spent significant time in
So what people could live without Starbucks I do
Always good to hear the observations of someone who goes into a situation with such an open mind.
I'm from Massachusetts and not a liberal there's actually a lot of conservatives here we're just severely outnumbered.
Lots and severely outnumbered does not match :)
Most young liberal answers with I don't know.
The average 18 year old doesn't understand shit about almost anything outside of their bubble. The law might call you an adult but 18 is a kid.
It is all good. We were all 18 at some point but what I've learned is that as you age you can take you're life experience good and bad and gain some wisdom. When you gain that wisdom share it with others in a positive way without making others feel like shit. That being said don't close you're ears to others that have been there before you. If you don't look at the past now and then you'll probably make the same mistakes in the future
18 IS definitely an adult. What a vacuous comment.
Amusing. I'm a conservative Californian married to a West Virginian from Weirton. Her older brother has an MBA from Robert Morris University, younger brother is a WVU graduate and she attended Ohio State so I don't associate WV with ignorance. Well, maybe down state.
"I feel like some things are going the right way and other things aren't."
"What do you think is going the right way?"
"I don't know."
"What do you think is going the wrong way?"
"I don't know."
Very insightful.
😂😂😂 👍
Nick, it would be interesting to see you interview people in border towns in the US, not just states like California, Texas and Arizona ,but states bordering with Canada..good video and stay away from yahoo's.
Avoid yahoos with yoohoos for sure
I live on the border outside Detroit by the Ambassador bridge to Canada. Surrounded by liberal towns. Talking politics is a real dangerous game around here because the democrats all have bad TDS.
Yes I think Maine would be especially interesting the further away from where the rich folk have their summer homes, into the land of thick forests, lakes, and mosquitos; and to the somewhat French speaking towns along the border. Especially good reading is the series of novels by Paul Doiron about a Maine Game Warden. Mainers sound like the unfriendliest people of all states.
It's not clear if you are making fun of liberals or sarcastically scoffing at conservatives, or maybe you are deliberately being ambiguous about it...
The guy can't seriously be this repugnant. It must be disrespecting the people here for views.
"Liberals seem to care about preserving things and making them cleaner and better and more efficient and making sure everyone's taken care of." Keywords: "Seem to."
You got nailed with Yoo-hoo by a ya-hoo! Seriously, I hope you’re ok. Thanks for the road trip videos. I love your channel.
I expected a Mountain Dew.

@@MarkJohnson-ht8wd mountain dew in a jug with three xxx on it😂😂😂
Who TF even drinks Yoo-hoo anymore?? I think the last time I had one of those, was in 1979, and it tasted horrible back then.
I thought 🤔 he will hit you with that guitar 🎸
I'm actually getting kind of tired of people portraying Democrats as though they're the only ones who care about things. Republicans care too. The difference is in how each side believes that things should be done.
The negative tone in the commentary really is troubling. I`m not surprised you rub people wrong.
Holy Shit!!! This state was actually on my radar. Thank you Nick.
Well don't listen to him, that's my advice
No liberals? Looks like I'm moving to West Virginia. Even the democrat senator from West Virginia is not with the woke BS. 😂
"If you have trouble figuring out if you're for me or Trump, you ain't black."

Best line “who ever tells you the best lie”
Yet those fools will vote for them over and over again. It be the same person for over a decade. 🤔
Autism speaks, folks.
Man listening to those students was painful. Loved seeing the old world architecture though.
I thought I lost a brain cell, especially listening to the guys at the bar crying about oh is me story. Education goes a long way.
You should investigate North Dakota. It would surprise you how intelligent those German farmers are in that part of the country.
💜 yes. Come see us!! Small towns. Don’t go east to grand forks or fargo. 👎 they’re a mess and getting more violent crimes.
I live in West Virginia and I can tell you that the people are the kindest, most punk rock folks I’ve ever met in my life. Your depiction of the people and the state is incredibly insulting. This video absolutely sucks. And none of us care about the few liberals in the state because they have no power.
My sister @rosemaryketchum is on the city council in wheeling West Virginia. I don’t want to speak for her but I bet she’d be interested in talking about how West Virginia is changing in her area if you were to reach out.
If you're young and not a liberal you have no heart, if you're old and not a conservative you have no brain--- Some guy
Voltaire?
Lol imagine justifying your opinions based on a quote.
@@startledmilk6670 I've noticed it's true. 54 year old WV native here.
Politics is bullshit either way so that quote makes no sense.
Many places suffer from chemicals in the water.
For me as an Austrian guy who always looked up to America since he was a child, its really sad to see areas like this. I can consider why people are poor here, because they shutted down the biggest employer the coal mine. But what I don´t understand, and I have never seen that before, is that trash all around there. Being poor is one thing, but why the hell is all the trash on the ground and no one removes it? Sorry folks I´m not here to judge anyone but it costs absolutely nothing to keep your property clean.

The state with the highest percentage of military veterans in the civilian population is not West Virginia. It is Alaska, with Montana coming in at a distant 2nd. West Virginia has the 14th highest %. (Interesting to note that DC has the lowest %, with NY coming in 2nd.)
So the whitest areas have the most veterans is that what you're saying?
Shepherdstown has the highest percentage of LGBTQ people in West Virginia, it's in Jefferson County. We're considered the Shenandoah Valley but come here if you want to interview an actual liberal West Virginian.
