- You aren't gonna believe this part of West Virginia!
This is not your normal West Virginia. We’re in Morgantown, home to West Virginia University. It’s by far the most liberal place in this state. You could actually draw a circle for 500 miles and not find a higher concentration of Democrats.
People in Morgantown take pride in being ‘different’ then the rest of West Virginia. The liberals here’ll tell ya - we’re educated and a lot of us have good jobs. We have big world aspirations. We’re not dumb chew spitting inbred hicks.
I’m here because I wanted to see what it was like and talk to some of the people who live here in this mysterious, rare liberal land.
This was day 3 on my great Appalachian adventure, and the first stop in West Virginia - the only state that’s completely in the Appalachian region. We’re gonna spend the next four stops here in the mountain state. There’s plenty of time to see poverty and rundown and the effects of drugs. But we’re gonna begin in a different type of place. I think.

I think he’s just trying to do his job so he can give us the best Content, but I most definitely agree 100%. Lots of people don’t have the capability to agree or disagree in a healthy way or adult manner. Also, yes, especially when it comes to strangers since there’s little we know about them there’s a chance they could turn violent easily.
Its hard to determine who really is sociable or not. They might have trigger words, but would otherwise be friendly. The previous videos where he interviewed homeless people shows even they can be friendly. But its hard to know who has a "Karen" button, and what subject pushes that button.

This was one of the most cherry picked videos about West Virginia and particularly Morgantown that I’ve ever seen. You left out that Morgantown is home to a Power 5 University, with research capabilities that are on par with the biggest higher education institutions in the world. You left out that Morgantown has one of the U.S. Government National Labs that is innovating every day to solve the world’s energy problems. You left out the beautiful neighborhoods of Suncrest, Cheat Lake, and the surrounding area that boast multi-million dollar homes and instead showed the run down parts that every city has, regardless of location. You tailored this video to what the vast majority of people’s preconceived notions of what West Virginia is like rather than showing what it truly is; a state with a wide diversity of view points, with people fiercely loyal to it and willing to help almost anyone, regardless of beliefs or differences. I implore you to revisit this and make a video that truly captures what the people stand for. It’s a true shame.

I was born and raised in the Appalachians. I'm now in Northern VA but have a lot of family in WV and have followed developments in WV. The issues impacting WV are many and complex.
But here's a simple issue: people don't like condescension and one does not need a college education to recognize it.
After watching this video, I can understand why the "drunk redneck" had his feathers ruffled in the beginning. He likely saw the condescension. Everyone has something of value to say - don't try to engage in conversation if you refuse to recognize that.

I was born and raised in good ole' West Virginia for 70 years now, so sick and tired of others poking fun at us and calling us hillbillies.
A lot of us especially here in Michigan know plenty of people who’s folks come from WV and love it down there

I’m from Martinsburg, West Virginia and my niece is attending the dental hygienist program in Morgantown. Do some research about redneck stereotypes originating from the Battle of Blair Mountain. Do some research about systemic oppression from the federal government beginning during the Civil War. We separated from Virginia because we didn’t support the South. Read a book dude.

It is funny how you said that, because that was the case over 30 years ago. I knew 2 people back when I lived in NJ, who went to WVU. Also, heard about other people from the more rural parts of NJ who attended there. Morgantown cannot be too much more than 4 hours away from areas within NJ.

I love that there's run down and abandoned places and that the cities didn't grow since the 1950s because that means they didn't tear town the old building and didn't replaced them. The small and mid size mountain towns are beautiful.

Vicky, many women in WV hide from publicity. They are very shy. They have had to do everything that their coal mining husbands never had time to do. And still they would not allow anyone in their kitchen or be caught dead driving a car with a MAN in it. They also provided family discipline. (The yahoo man will pay.) They ordered their civic duties and the religious or church activities were all ordered by the WV women. Now that I think about it, women really ran WV. Just like the river towns in Louisiana, there are some really fine people there. WV people are loyal and generous. I've never met a WV'ian I did not like. Even Yahoo. These comments seem strange, I was expecting the college students to be idiots but at the end of the day they are just college students trying to live their college life. However, I especially liked the 2 guys at the end for their open honesty about their treatment as West Virginians and just the other perspective of rural working class people who have been F'ed up by practically every politician or corp. Interesting to see their takes on libertarianism.
I’ve met the female politician that you are talking about and she’s Danielle Walker. I went to school there for 4 years and worked at Kroger for a year while there. I wish the homeless problem in Morgantown was addressed. Or the problem of many businesses not surviving long especially if not near campus. I have friends that have lived in Morgantown since birth. It also may be the most democrat place in WV but I’ve ran into the most conservative people in Morgantown.

While I like the documentary, kids on campuses all over the country appear to be this dense. I grew up in Portland and Seattle then moved to Miami for college and back to Atlanta. I moved from Atlanta to WV 18 years ago. So here is my perspective on WV. If you look at the political statistics of the WV voter, they vote Blue in all local and state elections..Red only for presidential elections. WV has also been exclusively ran by democrats for the last 80+ years. This may be the reason the state is in such bad shape. Corruption is on par with Louisiana. While the state has its problems, I have met some of the best people on the planet here.
8:26 "downtown Morgantown" is actually downtown Washington, Pennsylvania, 50 miles to the north along I-79.
Well Morgantown sure seems different than the rest of the state. Most of the people I meet in WV are kind, caring, and would take the shirt off their own back to give to you. Same for eastern KY. But maybe I'm saying that just because of the circles I'm in. I say it doesn't really matter what part of the country you're in, you're going to run into some crazy people - and some very kind people.
From my little experience I had with WV, people are very kind and caring.
My car was broken down in WV in a road trip last year. I went to different car parts stores looking for parts that I needed. Everyone I encountered is very nice and caring. They made sure I got everything I needed. Despite, I'm Asian and speak broken English, they are still very nice and kind to help me out.
@@engrishsheep That's wonderful! Yes, I had a similar experience here in KY about 5 min from WV. My truck fell off its ball joint here in the Kroger parking lot, and within 5 minutes or less, several men came out of nowhere, got on their backs and proceeded to give me several different opinions of what was wrong. Two women even came up to me and told me they would pray for me. There are so many good and kind people here. And of course, the people in my church are super friendly.

I live on the border outside Detroit by the Ambassador bridge to Canada. Surrounded by liberal towns. Talking politics is a real dangerous game around here because the democrats all have bad TDS.
Yes I think Maine would be especially interesting the further away from where the rich folk have their summer homes, into the land of thick forests, lakes, and mosquitos; and to the somewhat French speaking towns along the border. Especially good reading is the series of novels by Paul Doiron about a Maine Game Warden. Mainers sound like the unfriendliest people of all states.
The negative tone in the commentary really is troubling. I`m not surprised you rub people wrong.
My wife and I visited Morgantown and other parts of WV last year from the west coast. Definitely a very poor state but all the people were nice, and the food was awesome. Peruvian chicken was a total win, some of the best fried chicken of my life, ate trout almondine which was excellent and best Mexican food of my life, and that's after living 40 years in CA which has top notch Mexican grub.
We thought the state was great and hope to go back soon for the scenery, food and people.

The state with the highest percentage of military veterans in the civilian population is not West Virginia. It is Alaska, with Montana coming in at a distant 2nd. West Virginia has the 14th highest %. (Interesting to note that DC has the lowest %, with NY coming in 2nd.)
So the whitest areas have the most veterans is that what you're saying?

The average 18 year old doesn't understand shit about almost anything outside of their bubble. The law might call you an adult but 18 is a kid.
It is all good. We were all 18 at some point but what I've learned is that as you age you can take you're life experience good and bad and gain some wisdom. When you gain that wisdom share it with others in a positive way without making others feel like shit. That being said don't close you're ears to others that have been there before you. If you don't look at the past now and then you'll probably make the same mistakes in the future

I really dislike the tone of this video. He had a valid criticism of your content, it feels as though your going to these places with a sense of "I am better than the people here" when you arent. Check your privilege.
I went to Morgantown to run a marathon so I saw 26.2 miles of it on foot. There are surprisingly some nice areas but most of it is pretty depressing. The surrounding mountains are beautiful but I agree with Nick that this state is depressing and poor.
Then try out the Greenbrier, Glade Springs/Winter Place, Snowshoe, or Canaan Valley? I heard there’s a lot of depressed and poor people at those locations?
The people they interviewed told me enough about the place. The people talk about diversity, but I saw all white people he interviewed. Next.
Now do Harlem or Camden NJ and see how far your questions get you.

The bottom line is… when you hand out free money, people will accept, and get use it, and eventually depend on it. Conservative or liberal doesn’t matter. The Redist of the red small towns in Appalachia, VERY HIGH percentage of people accept govt hand outs. The Bluest of the blue LA county and San Fran… high percentage on govt handouts. If you offer it, people will accept it… on BOTH sides.

This is a great video and shows real perspective. There's nothing wrong with being a liberal or conservative, but we got the far reaches of each side in powerful places trying to dictate there views that are outside the norms of both groups and "normal" people in general.
Finally a level headed comment
The problem we have with liberals is that most of them have views (and vote) against the constitution and what this country was founded on. So many of them just virtue signal the latest "current thing" in the BlackRock/Vanguard-owned media. Then they vote themselves into insane taxes and then flee to cheaper states, then do it all over again like locusts. I've lived all over the country and have seen it happen over and over again... Republicans suck too though, and "conservative" politicians haven't conserved a single thing.
