It's truly difficult to think of my favorite reason why I love Chef JP's videos, because there is just so much Good Stuff. However, what stands out for me today is that he will always tell us when it doesn't matter. Want more olives? Add more olives! Don't like olives? Don't put them in. Warm potatoes? Cold potatoes? Doesn't matter. And then, in other videos, when he does something that is really important, HE'LL TELL US! This is critical, my friends, don't skip this step! Very important.
Chef JP is a Chef's Chef.
for swabian potato salad it does matter because it wont get the right texture if you make it with cold potatoes. its just chemistry tho the potato starch binds better when warm just keeping this fact in mind. you can still eat it cold if you prefer it that way but during making it, it should be warm or almost hot.
👍👍👍😊❤️
WELL SAID! You are so right...got to add more olives for Jack...😆😁😋😏
He is very generous and kind. He taught me a lot. Plus wow what a nice personality and heritage. Love you tons!!
It's 12am in Sydney, I should be sleeping but I see that notification I'm watching!! 😂😂
11 a.m. Thursday.
Cheers from Detroit 🇺🇲
2am in Newcastle, NSW Australia. Also watching. Saw the notification when I finished work at midnight :)
07:26 pm here in France :) Good night !
I make an American Potato salad with bacon, and depending on how much I'm making I use some of the bacon grease in with the potatoes has the mayo does not break down and get watery. That French Potato salad does look interesting.
From Eugene, Oregon 🇺🇸 April 11, 2024 at 3:31P.M. PDT. Good Day and good on ya.😀👍👏👋
A whole video without butter? 🤯
You mean budder...
I've been underemployed for a year, and watching this channel has given me wonderful ideas on how to make delicious meals on a reasonable (and steadily tightening) budget. Merci beaucoup, Chef!
"You don't want it? Don't put it in." He cracks me up. I really want potato salad now.
Love the bowl of butter, always present, even when it's not in the recipe! :)
Cooking with Chef JP is amazing! Everything tastes delicious and lasts 17 years!
When it's frozen 😂
In Germany there are two main versions of potato salad. In the southern parts of Germany, they like to make it with vinegar and oil, like you did. In the northern parts, it's done with mayonnaise, which I'd prefer every day of the week ;)
but he didnt make a swabian there is no sausage or bacon in swabian potato salad he already said so himself I just realized
We're Italian but grew up with a lot of German folks & these are some of the best Potato Salads. Thanks Chef
What region are you in Italia?
Grazie mille! ❤🧡💛💚 That's a great compliment for a German. Italian food is the best in the world.
Any dish that starts with bacon and onion is going to be a winner!
Haha don't you mean On-yo! 😂
Being German I can actually confirm your German Potato Salad‘s base recipe is very much like the one my wife makes. She does it a bit different towards the end but by and large it‘s very similar. Much to my detriment because I grew up with another variant that involves Mayonnaise, pickeled Cucumber and Apples - also very delicious, but my wife doesn’t like it as much as I do. As far as Potato Salad is concerned, we‘re a house divided 🤣
I make my German salad with gherkins, Strasbourg and egg.
My potato salad seems to be much closer to the OP and Chef JP. But I was taught to render the bacon, save a 1/4 c of the fat, then saute onions and a flour/sugar mix w celery seed. White vinegar was the original, but I prefer a really good red wine vinegar.
Being German myself, I don't care how people make potato salad as long as they're making it/trying it. Doesn't matter if they make it how Oma used to make it. Doesn't matter if they make it how my mom makes it. Doesn't matter if they make it how Walmart makes it. Eat potato salad because it's amazing
I think here in germany potato salad is a family devider lol
@@runtwer5700 i agree with your statement, but my oma, and her oma as well, would roll over in their graves if they saw this video. this german potato salad is not the simple, delicious one that i know. the one i know has only 6 ingredients, including salt and pepper. potatos, oil, vinegar, onions of some sort (white onion, chives, green onions, etc. whatever you can find), and s&p. for leftovers, add a tiny bit of mayonnaise to moisten it a bit because the potatos will absorb a lot of the liquid overnight. and of course, it must served at room temperature. the flavors are muted when it is chilled.
My grandma always cut against her thumb too. I've been watching pasta grannies on TH-cam and all the 80-90yo Italian ladies chop against their thumb as well. Must be a generational thing
If you are in the mood for potato salad, be like Chef Jean Pierre, make all three!
Chef, you are the best!! I learn and laugh every time I watch your show, you are a showman and a great one!! Thank you.
3 potato salads? 3 thumbs up! 👍👍👍
I watched this video when it came out almost 2 weeks ago. Low and behold at church this past Sunday they mentioned having a Wednesday night fellowship this week and was asked to bring something Italian. This led me back here today and I just made it according to Chef John's recipe with the exception of the Genova salami because I don't have any on hand. After making and sampling the Italian version its going to be hard to to eat it before tomorrow nights supper. As he says....... it's delicious! I am learning so much from this channel and consider John Pierre a true blessing in my culinary path. Thank you so much for the content you put out.
What is so great about JP is that he gives you the idea that you can create what he creates. Takes the mystery and scardie away. Thank you JP! I am going to make fig vinegar.
Tell Jack not to give up on olives. Our tastes change throughout our lives. I couldn't stand olives when I was younger. Then I tried some nice stuffed olives in a Mediterranean salad and I was hooked. Now I can eat them by the handful.
I can hardly wait to make a trio of these beautiful salads. Several of us were just talking about German potato salad and creamy vs. vinaigrette. I’m planning on making all 3 and surprising them on Memorial Day. Great Way to kick off summer!
👍👍👍
These recipes are excellent. My family now has one or another in our refrigerator everyday.
Thank you Chef JP.
Beautifully done, Chef. You’re the best Chef JP!!
I'm from northern Germany and we don't usally make potato salad like that you showed as "German". In northern Germnay potato salads with mayonaise, pickled cucumber and eggs are more common. My grandma used to make it also with meat salad. Mustard is also quite common as additonal seasoning.
Greetings from Hamburg.
Crazy. It sounds more like our southern potato salad.
We don’t call them pickled cucumbers - we call them pickles. 💜
@@Sassyglbeauty true but they could also just mean quick pickle of cucumber where u still retain cucumber flavor.
Amazing.....not one drop of mayonnaise. All of those recipes are on my list, and soon. It's a lot of prep, but it's not complicated, and they all look fun to make, not to mention delicious. Thanks again for sharing Chef.......= )
Not only I enjoy these precipices but also I laugh with you all the time...LOVE you my man
You're very pleasant to watch.
Thank You.
Thank you 🙏
I will be making these great potatoes 🥔🥔🥔 salads starting on Tuesday👩🍳👩🍳. It is right now 1:56AM in NYC 🧑🍳🧑🍳🧑🍳
Potato salad. The best! Summer is coming.
Seeing the views go up while watching Chef makes me feel like we're all one big happy family of strangers(and I use this word very lightly) in school learning from the coolest teacher
If you can find those tiny purple potatoes, try to mix them with the regular taters.
The salad looks great with the additional color and it has a subtle other taste and crunchiness.👍
Italian, German and French potato salad done my way…. Love it chef 😂
I am seriously drooling Chef, I am a massive potato salad fanatic, my mouth is watering, ten thumbs up 😊🤤😋❤️
We were taught if it grows below the ground boil in cold water, if it grows above the ground use already boiling water
a great German style potato salad is awesome!
Potatoes pre boiled in skin/peeled when cold, one small onion cut to extra small pieces, 4 hard boiled eggs grated, 6-8 pickled cucumbers sauer/sweet grated, grated salami /lyon or mortadella, pickled vegetables vis later, salty canned peas, yellow mustard, mayonese, salt, peper and lemon juice from one half of lemon.
Most important part ! You will pre boil whole carrots, celery root cut to slices size of carrots + -, parsley root in water together with winegar whole black pepper pimenta and bay leaf. Cook em half soft for easier grating and let em sit in the pickle ower night.
Mix all ingrediences finish it with touch of salt pepper n lemon juice.
Let it all rest ower night in fridge or cold cellar.
Behold, traditional Czech Christmass potatoe salad. Best goes with schitzels.😉
Being a german, I can say there are many different versions between south and north, east and west, friends and neihbors. With mayonaise, with a oil and vinegar, with bacon dices etc ect.... BUT always with potatoes ;) (as far as I know). Its versatile as german bread.
We LOVE potato salad here in our home! Now, I have, not one, but THREE recipes to choose from! THANK YOU!!!!!
Love potato salad. My recently deceased sister could make the very best I've ever tasted.
Thanks for another great video!
There is no "German potato salad". The recipe depends on the region. In the south, only potatos, broth, oil are used, sometimes with mustard, onions and/or pickles. In the north, a mayonnaise based dressing is very common.
Our Family recipe is amazing. Many "Chefs" will laugh, as one did when I was young, working in a restaurant. He said- It's to be POTATO SALAD, Not Potatoes and MAYONNAISE! but he was mistaken, sometimes simplicity is Divinity!...usually it is. Potatoes boiled with the jacket on, peel and cut to chunks when cooled down, keep at room temperature!!!. A bit of minced onion, A touch of vinegar, HELLMAN'S Mayonnaise ONLY, Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste (I use a good amount of pepper), Mix JUST before serving!, do not refrigerate!. Fresh Parsley and Paprika for surface garnish and that is IT....Heavenly.
Sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing! 😊❤️
When we next organize a BBQ / PIQUE-NIQUE I will ask each of my children to make one of these potato salads and we'll have a contest. I'll put my feet up, read and sing to the grand-babies and not move a finger! Except to stuff my face, while I judge who made the best salad.😋
We all know that a little bit of butter on top, for decoration, never hurt anyone. I love the indea.
I'm starting to think chef JP is probably my best friend. He might be the only person to call friend.
I made all three during the weekend
All of them are contenders for best potato salad that I've had
I had potatoes, and now I have ideas. -- Cicero :-)
Ah yes….Mashed potatoes, Potato soup, Boiled potatoes, Potato pancakes, Sauerkraut and Sauerbraten……Bon Appetit.
And absolutely I like a Lot of Onions in my Potato Salad like chives, green onions, shallots, and even Ramps, if I am Lucky Enough to get my Hands on them...
jack!!! all this time he is making fun??? you don't love those olives??? oh my!!! very funny!!!
I think he was sipping the wine today lol
It's 4:25pm in Tenerife Spain, where I'm watching you from. I LOVE ❤YOU TO DEATH !!! Jean Pierre, you are Truly The BEST !!! We Spaniards love our potatoes. I'm making the French version for dinner tonight, I'm sure my family will Love it. Un million de merci 🇪🇸😘❤
Love the Canary Islands, especially Tenerife....I didn't go for the beaches, went for the small towns and rugged NW. Hope your French version comes out great! Bon Apetit!
I'll be making all three over the course of the summer... and I LOVE your salad spoons!!! they really get the tossing done!!
Watching up in the northwest territories in canada and dont miss a video. This one however is one of my favorites. Grew up in german italian and acadian tradition and loads of greatness here. Herzlichen dank, grazie mille merci beaucoup chef!!
Im Germany we have 2 different types of potato salad: In the north it’s mayonnaise based, with some egg, a bit of mustard and cornichons.
In the south it’s like you showed
My grandmother was from Germany and her potato salad was almost identical to yours except she left out the green onion. If you didn't hurry and get a serving it would be gone! Lol
I personally like it cold after it sat in the fridge for awhile, my father on the other hand liked it warm... delicious either way!
My Dad (from Steinheim) would call that “Irish Pub German Potato Salad”. It is delicious. Bacon makes everything better.
I am a professional German and I approve of the Kartoffelsalat!
Potat and Onyo - best frens forever :3
This video is exactly the one I've been looking for on your page and you just uploaded it 1 day ago! Amazing! Thanks!
Greetings from the northern half of Germany, we do not concider this as potato salad, we don't even know what this is 😂 but we love you anyway ❤😊
Commenting as soon uploaded….
Because You already know …. I am going to love this …..
As always 😘😘😘
My nan would make awesome tater salad but i think it was the english salad cream she used that separated it. A unique kinda mayonnaise style dressing. The hot german potato salad sliced thin are some of my favorite food memories. Thanks Chef for the great vids!!!
Thank you so very much for the support. We greatly appreciate it! 🙏❤️
S.E. Wisconsin loves Jean Pierre. Jack too.
For the Italian style, I might consider subbing the Genoa Salami with Guanciale...
2 am here in TN can't sleep
2:05 "we're not really measuring here, my friends..." lol
Awesome! And then there’s my own potato salad, i guess it’s the American version with a mayo dressing. Nice variety, can’t wait to try yours Jean Pierre. They all look delicious.
Growing up and being a TEXAN we generally fix potato salaf, the 'southern' way...wow!. I can't wait to try these new ideas! Thank you Chef, you never disappoint!! Yeehaw!!
I made the prime rib recipe for Easter!!! First time, bought a thermometer, perfect!!! I love chef.
I wasn’t in the mood for potato salad until I watched this and now I must decide which one to make 😅
Thanks for showing how to taste test the dressing.
The people love 💕 you, Jean Pierre! Gather around friends, we gonna cook it, right now friends!
Thank you this might be my favorite video. I love potato salad. And since I'm afraid of using ovens, no need to use oven. So thank you
My problem I have with like store bought potato salad is too much mayonnaise so this is perfect
" my version" 👍👌😎. All three look amazing 😋😋😋. 👍👍👍
Just VERY GOOD olive oil and white wine vinigar on GOOD potatoes is the best .
And salt and pepper of course
Jean Pierre ti amo! 😊
These all look amazing. My mother used to make something similar to the German one, except no onion, parsley or dill add mint, diced hard boiled eggs and a fresh lemon mayo dressing.
I’m getting ready to go to work and I’m watching this video and now I’m going to be craving potato salad all day.
Chef, we always had wonderful potato salads from my late mother in law. She was the German version of you, she could make just about everything and I can tell you this, she would have loved your German Potato Salad.
Good Morning from the Pacific Northwest! Luv the options Chef!!! You are the best!! We are a lucky bunch!🙏
Thank you chef! My mother has been making German-style potato salad since I can remember. I had no idea there was anything else.
All three look delicious
Germans are masters of potato salads without question
This is great just to learn the various dressings.
When it comes to olive, Jack, you may be my long lost brother :D
Very good vid! Perfect for the upcoming bbq-season :D
Love theese vids!
I Love these types of episodes chef. On Sunday I’ll make two or three types of pasta, salad or potato salad or something like that to last for lunch is for everyone throughout the week, and these are perfect to provide me with ideas.
Another inspirational video.
I made roasted sausages with warm potato salad - really simple: vineger, sugar, salt and pepper, and had great leftover. Personal addition to the marinade: A large dollop of mustard (a dollop is more than a pinch and less than a splash - so measure carefully) Plus a lump of butter. This could be of general interest in so far as the sausages in this country are getting above 50% meat - with the sausages in question it was (according to the package 80% meat) - that is acturally to good a quality, as there needs to be fat and binder in the sausage.
So the leftovers was converted into "Swedish Sausage Dish" - Involving roasting the sliced sausage in lots of paprika and onions (lots being more than a pinch and less than a shovel -- so measure carefully) and can of tomato choppings and a can of tomato paste. The point being that when I boil potatoes, I add not only salt (generally just a pinch, where I should have used lots - but with recooked sliced potatoes - it does not matter, as that can be adjusted later) but also vegetable stock).
"Swedish Sausage Dish" is generally repurposing leftovers - something remembered from your childhood with great taste, as you use stuff basically already cooked and spiced. My neighbour loves it. Cooking for just one person is difficult and with stuff like sausages and potatoes there is no added labour and cost making to much. So if you have a neighbour that is elderly and to some extend frail - run over with a plastic tray of the stuff, and they can reheat it the microwave - so dinnertime is not a concern. Accept a cup of coffee so as to even out the gratitude. In these budget constrained times (they are always budget constrained) help each other out. There is nothing more damaging than neighbour strife.
One other tasty budget tip - goes for Denmark, but to the eagle-eyed (but spectacled) consumer there are stuff on offer in the supermarket of high quality: F.i. pork roasts, where there is a lower price pr. pound - because the butcher in the store does not need to put in work and mince. They might claim: Minced today - which is probably true, but 3 days ago it was cutlets and 6 days ago it was a roast.
Actually - at the moment - pork roast is half the price of minced beef - and any lack of fat can easily be adjusted with BUTTER! Some flavours are fat soluable and not water soluable.
When I buy a pork roast - 1½-2 kg, I cut up half in thick cutlets freeze them in smaller protion+ containers. Reverse sear them. The fatty skin is melted over a low heat - if you are really ambitious - you roast onion in the fat till they give the maillard reaction, and you have the perfect bread spread for pickled herring on black bread. There is next to no additional work involved.
White balsamic vinegar was a such a happy discovery. I make sure I never run out of it---a Godsend for those who can't tolerate the harshness of standard vinegars. I have a couple of the same Cuisinart cups and a few more taller ones for use with my immersion blender. Saves me from cleaning up splatter.
Agree about white balsamic vinegar!
Arguably my favorite side dish, 3 new versions to add to my repertoire, I also do a hot german potato salad thats great for winter... Thank You ChefJean-Pierre!!
YES PLEASE Chef, I'll take a pound of each!
I thought I didn't like potato salad but now I'm thinking I don't like mayonnaise.
I will be making this recipe.🥔
Jack, hate is such a strong word! Learn to be ok with olives! The vinagrette will last for 17 years, hihihi!
Potato salad is one of my favorite! Hold on to Jack, he will eat all the oliveslol, couldn't resist! Hugs to you both! Blessings
Chef, you are singing my song! I'll have to try them all!
I appreciate your accurate news reporting. Your honesty in reporting the news is like a breath of fresh air to me. I try to keep up on everything
Yesterday I got the urge to make a potato salad, wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so of course I checked your website and only found the one recipe. I wanted something a bit closer to the German style, so I thought, I'll just come up with something tomorrow. Now tomorrow has arrived and I see this video! Absolutely perfect timing for me.
I'm with you Jack, I hate olives, too. Chef JP "I should do this for a living". LOL!
spring/summer approaching in UK, these are going to be great addition to my barbeque food!
Your German style is the best of the 3 in my opinion. I've been to all 3 countries and have eaten plenty of each but for some reason, mom's homemade here in America will always be my favorite. Southern style loaded with many ingredients for taste and texture.
10:50 wow I wanna learn how to slice garlic like that. He makes it look so easy
Jack is right about the olives ! but i really have to try the German salad ..¬! Lets be honest ! anything that has bacon in it just must be good ! ...
I do enjoy watching your show. You inspire, entertain, and refresh!
