Honda Recon ES: Cold Start and Quick Ride

  • I had got a request from HondaQuadder250 for a cold start of my Honda Recon so I thought it would be a perfect opportunity after our first freeze of the season. It got down to 30 degrees the night before and was about 50 degrees when I actually started the Recon. The Recon had not been started in at least a month so it was definitely good and cold. They do I have a 1997 Honda fourtrax 300 and a 2019 Honda rancher and they sound identical , but the new Honda’s don’t have a rev Limiter 🤔 so you could just hold the gas all the way down and it wound not blow up but don’t try it bc I don’t know what year Honda’s have that.

    Hey, glad you liked the video! As far as winches go I have a Warn winch on my Honda Rancher and it works very well. I am not real sure about which model winch will fit the Recons though. Your Honda dealer may know which one will fit it the best. Sorry, I can't be more help to you. Let me know what you find out about it. Thanks for Commenting and Watching!!

    I just got my 2002 honda recon 250 es back. Haven't ridden it in 2 years. the carburetor broke (or at least we thought) apparently there was a lot of other things wrong with it from sitting below our deck. After we got it fixed, it ran like it was brand new. Thought that was an amazing feeling hearing it start back up again.

    Pleased to see a cold, dry top end engine started up slowly. Modern heavy truck engines won't rev when started from cold until oil pressure and temp rises to a certain level. Heavy marine engines have coolant heated and oil pressure pumped up before starting. Thanks for posting.

    • @Palomino488
      @Palomino488  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, you are right, they are very cold natured. I’ve noticed over the years of owning 3 different Recons that if I run them everyday or multiple times per week they are much less cold natured but when they sit for several weeks or longer without running they are very cold natured. I had an 2006 Rancher that was carbureted and it had a carb heater built into the carb from the factory. It always was very easy to start when it had sat for a while or was very cold outside. Honda should put a carb heater on the Recons, I bet that would help the cold natured symptoms.

    I have a Recon ES, she’s a 2000 and runs like a dream, she has a few problems but nothing major like the neutral light will not come on, and a crack in the right fender, but overall she’s fine

    Hmmm, interesting, I expected it to fire up quicker. I've cold started my Foreman & Rancher @ 5F & both fired up/ran after about 2 seconds on the start button. Mind u, they both have EFI & this would make a difference I'm sure. I was surprised to hear u say u had temps below 32 already. We haven't had much of that yet. It was about 33 here this morning (much further north). Thanx for sharin'!

    Have you any idea for a good winch. Im getting my recon its first service this week. Im looking for a good winch but im not sure which one will fot the recon. It the 2012 model I want to make sure I get the correct mounting bracket. Sorry for all the questions but its my only quad and I want to add to it until I can feel very safe on the long rides that ill get back home.

  • @steve5ray

    I’m trying to decide between a Recon and a Rancher. It would mostly be used for putting around a family farm. Wouldn’t be used for any serious work or mudding. Gentle rolling fields in MS. I like the smaller size of the Recon and feel I’d actually have more fun on that. What’s your opinion between these. Thanks

    • @Palomino488
      @Palomino488  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the Recon would be just fine for that. The Recon kinda gets cramped for really tall or stout riders I would say. A base model 2wd Rancher typically doesn’t cost much more than the Recon and might be a bit more comfortable of a ride plus a liquid cooled, fuel injected 420cc engine vs the 229cc carbureted, air and oil cooled Recon engine. With all that said though if you really like the Recon and are looking to have fun then I’d say you can’t go wrong with the Recon. Either machine would be a good choice honestly. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    Sweet throttle

  • @ancientfilm
    @ancientfilm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I noticed you gave it some throttle while still having the choke on. I do the same with my archaic trx 125, but I recently read it's not a good practice. What are your thoughts? My '87 seems to prefer a little throttle or else it will shut off easily even with the choke on. Then it idles fine once the choke is off.

    • @Palomino488
      @Palomino488  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have owned three Recons in my life. Out of the three I still own the oldest one which was my first Recon. It has had no negative side effects from doing this while cold starting after all these years. While the choke might be on, it is only partially on maybe halfway at most when I give it a bit of throttle. Attempting to give a machine throttle while choke is fully closed would be bad for an engine, however the way my machines were you could not apply throttle while choke was fully closed or they would just cut off anyway. All the carbureted Honda’s are extremely cold natured from my experience and that’s what Honda mechanics have always said about them. Honda states in my owners manual for the Recon to warm a cold engine push choke knob halfway in and open and close throttle to warm the engine but do not race the engine. Once engine begins to run smoothly while opening and closing throttle then push choke knob all the way in.
      Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    In your opinion would the recon be able to plow snow and do they have 4x4

    • @Palomino488
      @Palomino488  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I honestly don’t think the Recon would be a good model for plowing snow.
      Pulling a small trailer behind them with a light load is about all I would recommend.
      Due to the small engine size and lack of 4x4 they just aren’t cut out for plowing snow or other things like that.
      I’d recommend the Honda Rancher 4x4. It has a 420cc engine, 4x4, liquid cooled engine, geared lower, and is more stout for plowing and any other work tasks you might have.
      I know they make plow kits for the Rancher models too. The Rancher is the next step above the Recon and often times you can buy a Rancher for not much more than a Recon. The Honda Rancher and also the the Foreman are the workhorses in Honda’s lineup.
      Hope that helps.

    • @Palomino488
      @Palomino488  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Best advice I can give is a lot of patience. I have found the more often you ride it seems that the next time you go to start it cold it is less cold natured in my experience. Using good quality gas and Sea Foam fuel treatment or a similar fuel treatment is a good idea.

    Maybe you can help me I have a 2016 Honda Recon and for some reason my quad does not turn over I can choke it but it will not turn over it will not idle any help???

    • @Palomino488
      @Palomino488  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure. Could be that the ethanol in the gas has corroded some of the internal components of the carburetor causing it to not idle. Also, check to make sure that all hoses are fitting properly onto the carburetor and have a sealed connection. If it’s not turning over it sounds like it could be the battery. Without being there it is hard for me to give a definite answer. Hope that helps some.

      That’s good. My 2004 Recon starts up without the choke while giving it some gas. I have owned three Recons over the years and they are all different in how they startup cold. As I mentioned in the video this one had been sitting for a month in the shed without being started plus it was during cold weather so it all has an effect on how easily one will start cold. If I start and ride it everyday or just several times a week it starts up with much less hassle.
      Thanks for watching!

      Okay. The last time I did any riding was 30 years ago on a Big Red 250 (I believe it was a 250). No one ever told us kids the three-wheelers were dangerous. We raced across those pastures without ever having an accident. Who knew? I recently went into a dealership and was told they were outlawed for safety reasons. I think it was more like rider error.
