  • Aggressive Rottweilers can be very difficult to handle without professional assistance. This video, on Fearful Dog Aggression Training and Rehabilitation, includes the exact training you need to break down Dog Aggression when based in fear. This is Finn, a young 2 year old Rottweiler with severe dog reactivity with any dog he encounters. Prior to this training Finn could NOT go anywhere with his owner, which is always relationship damaging. Finn and owner both need continuing training at the upstate canine academy. The fear based aggression they have been trying to fix for over a year has halted in this video which includes a detailed break down of why it was happening and exactly how to fix it! Thanks for watching,. comment in the comments below what type of video you want to see next!

I agree, we recently adopted an extremely fearful dog- she was nipping the first night we brought her home! We didn't know if she was aggressive or afraid- she was going for everyone in the house. We now know that she was not socialized at all (the rescue said- after we adopted her- that they weren't even sure she'd ever been inside a house! No wonder she's scared of everything) and that to her, the world is a terrifying place that she needs to control to feel more secure. We are slowly teaching her that we are in charge so that she can be calm. It's wonderful to see her make progress and slowly become more confident- we have a long way to go, but we will get there.

Thomas, thank you so much! I am so grateful for people like you with a gift like this that share it with the world to help all those that are accepting of it and implement it with their own dog. Your video saying/showing how to have, "gas and clutch", with the leash and not joystick the dog with it all the time has helped so much train me and my 6 month old Lab. Your videos really helped me with my GSD. He just turned one. I live in the city and walk him multiple times a day and of course there are dogs everywhere. When he was a pup no problem he socialized with other dogs but as he got bigger to many people he looks scary and they’ll cross the street with their dogs when they see us coming. So after a while I’d get nervous if there was a dog coming towards us because I can tell the owners look nervous so I used to grab his leash tightly and pull him toward me and he associated all that with dogs and than he started to get protective around other dogs. I became that owner who crosses the street or turns away when sees other dogs. After watching your videos I understood my mistakes and slowly day by day we’re working on it and it’s already much better =)

I just adopted a 2 year old GSD female recently. She reacts just like this Rottweiler. Now I know that it’s fearful aggression and not straight aggression to be mean. I’m going to try this technique with her, I definitely don’t want to give up on her she is SO sweet with us. Just not other dogs or small animals. She hides behind my husband if she sees a bird land in a yard so it makes sense that this is what it could be.

My dog has a very similar story to this one. He's been attacked twice and has severe fear based reactions to every dog he sees. It's been a slow process of trying to break him of it. Had him at a park yesterday where there were a few other dogs and I was working on this same training with him.
Had a lady try to argue with me that I shouldn't have him in a park when he is "agressive". I'm 40 feet away from this other dog and she tried saying I was being abusive to him.
He will never get over his fear unless I help him get over his fear. Dog park this weekend where we are going to walk the outside perimeter to help adjust him to others dogs being near him.

Was never aggressive until new neighbors dogs attacked him and my kids 😔 Have spent the last two years finding secluded places to walk alone with him and never answered by 'big wig trainers' near me. None of us able to live our lives to the fullest anymore. I have hopefully a chance with a trainer, I keep trying and never give up hope, but 😔 some days are harder than others. I'm strongly considering scheduling with Tom & Upstate Canine Academy- I live in south western Pennsylvania, so the car trip would be very, very long. Plus, my dog is a mess in the car (all over the place)

Same with my dog we have 2 German shepherds always pooping in our yard and picking fights with him. He used to play with other dogs and now when he sees other dogs he becomes stiff and his tail raises up, he'll also try to lunge at the dog. I don't know what to do to fix him and I'm afraid he's going to attack a dog someday.

This video is helpful and good points were made, but theres too much editing in the middle of sentences. I want to hear what the owner is asking and the given response. Also, its great your gifted and experienced with dogs but as a viewer i watch videos to learn how to train at home, so watching the owners with their dogs while you correct might be more helpful instead of just listening to you talk about how good you are with dogs. Like you should want to empower the owners, not make dog training seem like a mystery to the owners. Still a helpful video though.

      1. Use prong collar or slip lead or e collar depending on the dog & situation. (In this case he used a prong collar for a 100 lb rottie)
      2. Quick snap of the leash which is attached to the prong collar, when he gets it wrong. The "teeth" in the prong collar act as correction similar to correction from mother or another dog. The application of the teeth, & the occasional momentary snap of the leash, got his attention focused on the trainer.
      3. Once the dog is focused more on the trainer, he practices walking & making sudden turns & stops, etc. to condition the dog to be more aware of someone on the other end of the leash, & to focus.

I would introduce very confident and socialised dogs to him one by one, like neighbors and friends dogs first. Maybe use the prong collar used here in the video, aka snap collar. Visit a vet first to rule out any illnesses that can cause anxiety type problems. Your dog has just has got used to using puppy based decisions to cope with stress, often associated with fear, so he needs to learn other coping strategies from you. When you start training which your dog will love, you will automatically have better leadership skills, which your dog will respect you for, by doing that your telling your dog that you will protect him from everything he fears. Just don't give up, and if one method doesn't work, try another.

the pressure from the prong is doing most of the work. Dogs don't think like Humans, they have associated thinking, they can't rationalize. Which means the dog has associated the slight pressure of the prong with a correction(Most likely they did prong training first) and associated affection or treats with positivity. So if the dog pulls and feels the leash, the dog readjusts then he receive affection thus teaching the dog whats ok and whats not. Dogs look for patterns in life and in Us. In this demo the trainer changed how the dog would usually approach dogs like a Cig smoker trying to quit, gotta break habit by changing the rules of engagement. With physical and mental exercise, consistent and patience you can help any dog.

We rescued a dog a year ago.
He is a 3 year old mixed breed medium sized ,gentle and friendly with people and a great addition to our pack.
He coexists with another dog,2 cats, children, and free range chooks.
Recently he has started to show some aggressive behaviour.
We cannot take him to a dog park our few attempts to teach him doggy social skills he just wanted to fight or try and hump any dogs that invited a game.
Goes mental at other dogs on walks making it sometimes a difficult and unpleasant the exact opposite of what walkies is meant to be.
We will try this tech he is smart and learns things fast but so far we cannot find any success training him on being more friendly towards dogs apart from his pack mate who is older really chilled friendly but a no nonsense pack leader.

  • @yangjianhunt

This training you did is amazing. The concept of "taking off the mask of aggression first then desensitizing and retraining through positive reinforcement" is revolutionary to me.
I have a 2 year old female carolina dog mix (46 lb) that I adopted from local facility when she was 3 months old.
She has severe fear aggression towards dogs and fear aggression towards strange people as well.
I take her walk every evening and let her meet people and dogs. I tried to use clicker training/positive reinforcement to desensitize her. But she is still wary of dogs and people, especially dogs.
She can now pass people when a yard of distance is kept. But I can tell she is still nervous.
When dogs pass, I have to take her 10 yards away and I use treat to distract her. And often she will raise her hackles. If the other dog is calm, she reacts less and won't raise her hackles.
How do I advance my training so that she can gradually overcome the fear with people or dogs.
I do not have access to another well socialized dogs nor do I want to risk traumatizing my friends "nice" dogs. I am planning to take her to a specialist (board and train) but am not sure whether a quick 2 week session will be effective, or is there any technique to get the dogs under control before going to the specialist.
I also bring her to a vet once a year. She barks and lounges the whole time and is extremely fearful. But when the tech had to drag her away from me and took her to another room where I am not present, she will not react, even though she is still very fearful. Does this mean that my presence give her a little more confidence to "fake the aggression"? When I am not there, all she's left is fear?
Any help or advice is appreciated. I wish you are in Houston.

JY kayak fishing I have a very similar case. I’d definitely say the sooner you stay consistent with training the better. And hire a positive reinforcement trainer who will help you execute practices at home. Dogs learn and trust faster with consistency and routine especially ones with “behavioral issues.” We have to be sensitive towards their triggers and not flood them like what this trainer is doing here. It might work faster, but realistically cases where there’s aggression you want to pay attention and keep desensitization sessions short and sweet. Positive reinforcement training imo transforms slower but is by far the best because you’re not forcing anything upon the dog. You’ll always have to keep training even after they’re behavior is better so it’s better to get on it now then never!

    • @thebunnyyears
      @thebunnyyears ปีที่แล้ว

It happens around 2:40, where a part is missing. The dog gets a prong collar, and I'm guessing we don't see how this is introduced. From that point onwards the dog is fearful of the prong and pays a lot more attention. So now the dog is afraid of the trainer instead of being afraid of other dogs.

Hello Mr Davis, my name is John and im from Australia, i was a little depressed and i will get to the reason shortly, just happened to stumble across your videos, sir they are gr8, it gives me some hope!
i have a whippet x greyhound, which i got from a animal shelter, she is about in your measure 25 inches high, weighs about 51 lbs and i love this animal. she is gr8 with people, older kids ok, BUT, she has a few issues. 1. at times she will jump up at people to be patted, not all people like this, 2. she pulls on her lead when walking, she is getting better thou, 3. dosent always listen to what i want her to do, but the real gripe i have she goes crazy with other animals, aggressive barking, her teeth are showing , her tail is wagging at 100 mph and sometimes she lunges towards the animal. just last week in an animal play ground a young couple was walking there dog , my dog saw her my dog s ears up and in a aggressive stance started barking and growling violently , long storey cut shorter, i held her back the owner was ok and allowed the two to mingle my dog was ok smelling and i think wanting to play the other dog was ok but i say a little fearful.
i cant take my dog out in public when other animals around
Mr Davis i know i leave in Australia can you Help please,
my animal is very comforting and whe get along gr8

I haven’t seen this video yet but I’m PRAYING that this helps my psycho Australian shepherd…. She is super reactive and the post office won’t deliver packages anymore because she just hated any outsiders and anyone who LOOKS at her.
I really hope this helps me to establish authority over her and be her protector rather than her being mine

I would like to add that as a trained ballroom dancer specializing in Argentine Tango I can say some of your moves directing the dog with your legs are familiar. I wish I was tech savvy, I would edit this video with Por Una Cabeza in the background and you would see what I mean.

Now at 9 and in retirement her gets to play or watch 5 to 6 other dogs everyday....no aggression just balanced.

Would like to see moments of handing-over the leash to the owner, and have them perform what was taught - especially this woman, who from the onset, didn't have a clue what was going on with her Rottie. It's hard to understand how effective these methods are, and if they even work when it's the owner handling their dog. I used to own a 120-lb male Rottie about 30yrs ago. I knew if I didn't have control, all bets were off if it came down to fear or aggression toward dogs or humans. My Rottie was great, didn't have issues, but with a dog this size, it could be a real mess if your ability to handle them is not thought through all the way. There have been far too many instances when these wonderful dogs are euthanized because the handler didn't have a clue.

My Rottweiller weighs 120# .I can't walk him, definitely can't control him. He hurt his leg last week. Going to the vet is a nightmare. Pulling and barking. He required heavy sedation. Apparently has an old acl tear which he re injured. No surgical treatment because of his weight. My husband gives him too many treats and won't let me get dog training. He loves the dog the way he is. Should I buy a prong collar and keep watching videos? He is 6 years old. Thanks

@@lindamarr6200 Definitely get the prong and train him while your hubby is out. You can teach him basic behaviors in the house first and then in the back yard. No need to stress about unsafe long walks until he gets it. And tell hubby dog needs a diet for his health and comfort. Poor guy has "Joe Namath knees."

We have a 2 1/2 year old rottie that reacts just like Fin does around other dogs. I wil put this video training in to practice. Buster weighs only 80 pounds, but he is very muscular. We use the Herm Sprenger collar when we walk Buster, but when other dogs are reactive, we end up with an 8000 pound wild animal sometimes. It can be quite embarrassing, especially when the other dog is a 2 pound chihuahua. Do you have an episode where you can get two reactive dogs to finally ignore each other? Thanks for your great videos and what you do.

This is great but being a one person suite trying to train this without someone else to hand I'd imagine is really hard, I'd love to try this, but how I'd hold two dogs at the same time I don't know and the friend that would help naturally excites dogs by his presence. I do want to however say the way you trained this dog was amazing. You have a real talent there 😊

I have a 1.6 year old lab named Bauer.. he was absolutely excellent with other dogs until about 9 months ago.. he was raised around my ex’s mom’s dog who was very aggressive with him.. so now he his a fear around other dogs. And in that fear he comes off as aggressive. He will literally cry and shake but once he gets within a foot of another dog he attacks. I rescued his littermate Miles in September. Upon introduction the first time, they attacked each other. Miles is great with other dogs, Bauer still struggles. They live at different houses, and I would love for them to be together. How would I go about reintroducing them again since they’ve met once and attacked? I’m at a complete loss on what to do. Especially with Bauer’s fear.

if a dog doesn't listen to you and even you're trying to be as engaging as you can, is it advisable to lure food to get their attention and praise them after?
like the method done by Zak George and other trainers?
can you recommend luring food to get their attention on you? because it's one of my biggest dilemma when dealing with larger distractions. I think I'm not being consistent with what method I will use and it confuses my dog. Because sometimes it is really hard to effectively redirect with leash pop pressure if you have a super heavy dog.
Is luring food to get their attention (in a larger distraction) is something that you can recommend with mixing with your training method?

    • @tomdavisofficial
      @tomdavisofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Food luring has a threshold, its a currency, there is always going to be something that is more rewarding than food. Or if your dog simply isnt hungry, then what do you do? This is why I like food luring but its not realistic for most dogs and their owners.
I like to use OB when working with hard environmental distractions through discipline and understanding.

I think food rewards do have their place in leash reactivity training but not as a lure. At a close distance, most reactive dogs are so hyped up that they won't accept a treat. BUT! If you correct the dog and it reorients to you (i.e. follows your instructions), you should mark the correct behaviour and you might as well do it with a treat. Plus, it doesn't hurt that chewing and swallowing food actually reduces the stress level in the dog (chewing is their general go-to method to deal with stress). Just find a treat that has really high value for your dog and associate it with high-stress situations. That way your dog will know that every time he gets an adrenaline rush, you're the person he should go to to help him through it.

Another amazing session. The video was cut at 2:28, probably intentionally. I wonder what training took place between 2:28 and 2:29. The dog stopped lunging and reacting to other dogs. Once the dog stops lunging it becomes easier to progress to the next stop. I guess that step is the key, very critical.

We are currently at the same point with our husky. He lived with another dog since he was a puppy but we could never introduce our husky to any other dog because of his aggressive behavior. We have worked with a trainer and she worked similarly with him as you did with the dog in this video. Our other dog has passed away and we are now hoping to get another dog because our husky now has anxiety when left alone. Do you have next steps on how to introduce these types of dogs to another dog without it getting ugly?

    • @frisco61

ViralBreedFeed I’m not the trainer 😊 but you most certainly can. I’d work on “watch me” with your dog so he knows a command that will break the focus on the squirrel. Always walk with treats ready so your dog knows that when you say “watch me” it’s more rewarding to look at you than at the squirrel.

My Rottie did the same thing. He was attacked by a much bigger dog when he was about 2 years old. After that, whenever he saw a dog the same size, you would see him go just like that and it was a behavior I just never completely got corrected. If he saw small dogs, he went nuts wanting to play. He would roll on the ground and let all the little dogs jump and play around and on him and he never showed teeth or any type of aggression around small dogs. With big dogs, I had to watch him. Wish I would have had these videos.

I have a black german shepherd that has a fear of dogs and unfortunately injured two other dogs since we have had her. She was never attacked, but a Belgian malinois was playing rough with her and kept slamming our dog into walls as she was trying to get away. She became reactive shortly after that incident. We have been working with her, but only with a prong and correction. We have tried multiple different treats but loses interest in the treats (even her favorite treats) when dogs get closer. Are there any other types of positive reinforcements I can use/do to help her be more comfortable around dogs and stop barking/lunging?

My dog acts very similar to this when he sees other “strange” dogs. He has dogs that he does play with that he’s know for a long time. I’ve tried the e collar and he doesn’t seem to respond to that well. I recently bought a prong collar and haven’t used it because he completely shuts down when I put it on him with out even applying pressure. I’ve tried to get him used to it by just walking with it on but he just shuts down. Should I try a different technique to get him to get used to having the prong collar on?
