    We wanted to share some experiences we go through as a Deaf and Hearing couple during quarantine and some signs that is useful right now. We're glad to see so many people starting to take up learning sign language during this time, and we want to help! We're going to create as much sign language content for you all, and please stay home and be safe!

    My mom is deaf and doesn’t know sign language so she relies solely on lip reading which is obviously very difficult during this time. It’s cool to see another perspective from a deaf individual on how to navigate such limited interaction that they’re normally used to having in order to communicate.

      I know ASL and am really good at reading lips and was able to have right sided cochlear implant surgery on September 6, 2019 and hoping soon to know about having left sided cochlear implant surgery.

    • @themerryrabbit5040
      @themerryrabbit5040 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Amy Westbeld how did the implant impact you initially? My mom has looked into it but she’s been deaf all her life so I think it’s quite daunting to think about how life changing that would be to her because she only knows how to function as a deaf woman.

    In the early 1990s, when I was learning to interpret, I was taught that 2 “i”s together meant “talk to yourself.” It is funny to me that THAT particular sign helped make the sign for quarantine. 🤣 Thanks for the video!

      You do realize that there are trolls who go through hitting the dislike button without even watching the video. They somehow think they are hurting the channels, but in reality even the dislikes help the channel in the analytics because it is about interactions, not positive or negative.

    You guys are amazing. I was originally a Deaf Education Teacher. I then became a Doctor of Audiology and practiced for 10 years before I became a stay at home dad for a few years. I now teach Middle School Sign Language and before the Shelter in Place for Corona virus happened I showed my students your "Threw my Food away in the Drive Thru" video. My students were shocked that this kind of discrimination could happen in today's society. We had a long talk about that type of problem. During my online teaching I plan on showing this video so they can get first hand knowledge about y'alls experience during quarantine. Thank y'all...stay safe. :-)

    About the accessible news, here in the Netherlands they have an interpreter who's standing behind the prime minister during important speeches, which I think is really good, because not only can deaf people understand but also the interest in Dutch sign language has increased sooooo much! Like the registers for next year's signing classes have already doubled

    • @KcKc13
      @KcKc13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s really cool! I was going to chime in and say that I’ve seen on TV that a major Texas city near me has been using interpreters for speeches too which is awesome. Watching someone interpret public announcements like that with all the legal vocab can be hard for me to understand haha but I like trying to watch.
      Great to hear that people have become more interested!

    @iamOlorato 4 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    I also realised while watching the news(press conference) that the picture-in-picture thing is better because when the interpreter was standing next to the speaker, the camera people would zoom out a lot or even show the audience when the speaker was talking. I'm not deaf but i would get angry because then someone out there isn't receiving all the information that i hear.
    I guess also camera people could just improve their ways to be more accommodating 🦋
    All the way from South Africa, love y'alls channel ❣

    I love that here in Tupelo, Mississippi our mayor's office hired a sign interpreter. Most of the time he is there present at any of the important press conferences. If he's not there they do picture in picture. Some people have been mean about it making fun of how expressive he is and his clothing but many of us have tried to encourage him.

    Yay for skill share!!! Also I love how welcoming Ryan is to people learning sign language. When I had my son back in 2012, I taught him tons of baby signs. I remember dirty looks because my son would sign food and then say something like “snack” I would reply with the sign OK or say okay. People were not nice about it. Times have changed. My son and I still use sign language back and fourth. I think it’s an amazing thing to be able to maybe see someone trying to talk to someone who is deaf and running up and be able to be that Interpreter when they need it. Even just know the abcs can get you far. Thank you guys!!!

    There’s a local organization in my community that makes special masks for current workers (doctors, supermarket employees, police officers) that are cloth everywhere and there’s a plastic piece where the mouth area of the mask is supposed to be (made of like face shield material) so that deaf and hard of hard of hearing people can still read lips in public spaces :)

    I’m hard of hearing and I am having a hell of a time communicating with people rn. Because of the masks and plexi glass It is so difficult to hear people that usually I just leave or buy something I wasn’t looking for because I can’t hear what the guy said. Another problem is people yelling across the street to me a greeting or neighbours trying to have a conversation and I am only catching small parts of the conversation. I can’t even imagine what it’s like for people who are deaf

I’m soo very excited as this will become soo useful for me, and others on the receiving end who are deaf/hearing impaired to be able to communicate. I myself can only hear good out of one ear not able to afford a hearing aide, so I feel I can benifit from this greatly, and can get my partner onboard as well. Do you know how many deaf/hearing impaired are discouraged to get their nails done/need nail maintenance service in fear of the communication barrier?

    There’s just some things people don’t understand about deaf people. I have a deaf sister and it took me a while to learn sign language because she can’t hear me. And just like Ryan, she chooses not to talk. And it’s not just like your simple ABC’s, because it takes way more letters and sounds.

    I have a question. I am left handed. I have a tendency to try signs with my left hand since it is dominant-does it matter which hand you use to sign?

      It doesn't matter which hand you are using. Some deafies are left handed too. If you are learning some signs from the right handed person, you can do the opposite since your left hand is dominant. It's not that hard. 😀

    Question! When Ryan does the hand signs, he usually mouthed? the word he's signing, right? (Or at least it seems like it...) was this done out of habit or is it a way for you to keep on remembering what sign is for what word? Or is it for the lips reading people?
    Thanks a bunch. Hope the questions makes sense♡

      Sometime one sign has few meanings. To avoid misunderstanding it's better to mouth those words. It's helpful not only for hearing people but also deaf people to understand each other.

I know all the good parts about your relationship but I want to know that bad/difficult parts about it also. For Ellen: what is the hardest part for you about Ryan being deaf? I’m sure there was a language barrier in the beginning but what about now that you know sign language? And what is your favorite and least favorite part about being hearing? Listening to 1 person sign and speak and watching the other just sign I catch myself picking up on Ryan's signs SO much more after having started watching your videos only about 2 weeks ago! It's really cool to be able to see myself learning! I find it easier that trying to guess which of Ryans sign mean what lining it up with the CC. Being able to match what Ellen is saying to what she's signing is helping me learn so fast and then I can practice by watching Ryan. It's really cool. 😊
