    I wanted to tell you that I caught my first bass on your hover rig yesterday. I was fishing a while hollow body tube. I pitched it into a lay down and the fish hit it within a few seconds, i had a good hook up too.

    I have been fishing the spy baits for a few years. I fish them mostly on inland reservoirs, they are 20' to 25' deep with rip rap all the way around em....BUT, I change out the hooks on em with the same size only a EWG trebles. I can cast all along the rocks and hardly ever get hung up! And if I do I simply walk down the the bank to where my lures @ and shake the rod tip the opposite side and with the EWG hooks it comes right out...I have caught MORE 4 and 5 lb bass along the rocks with the spy baits. Great lures!

    My dad used to use the classic Bangolure during the winter for snook way up in Florida rivers. Snook go up in rivers and creeks when it's cold and when it warms up after a cold front they can be hungry. Topwater is a great way to catch them because it's exciting and you don't snag the bottom. The Bangolure around 5" long in black and silver caught dad a bunch of fish. But they got torn up pretty quickly because snook can be bigger than bass by quite a bit. Sometimes you can get snook to bite something obnoxious out of anger. Baits with props are good for that. Long ago they used long bamboo poles with a short cable or heavy mono leader about 3' long with a loud topwater. They'd lean over little bridges or piers and make circles or figure 8s like you musky guys do next to the boat. But they didn't use a reel. It was all about a short but brutal fight. I guess it works too well because it was banned. Big spy bait type things is how it was done. Sounds like fun to me.

    A good tip: Any time during a jerk bait and or a spy bait retrieve make sure that during the bait pause not to allow your fishing line to be too tight because it will slowly pull your lure forward. Ideally you want the bait only moving during the actual retrieve and not moved during the pause. A little slack left in the line while bait sits motionless is best.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yep, but keep it tight enough to feel the bites...got to find the slack line sweet spot!

    I love the spybait now; I had it for several years and didn’t know how to fish it, I finally figured it out on St Clair, smallmouth crush it! In that clear water all you do is reel it super slow and hang on, I always have one tied on now!

  • @brianprice7645
    @brianprice7645 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like to fish it a variation of your 1st method but every so often I stop it but then I throw slack into the line so it falls 2 or 3 feet horizontally. I'll use the same retrieve in warmer weather to find the top of the weeds and then try to keep it just above them

    I was skeptical about spy baits for way too long… it is kinda a niche bait and conditions specific but the big spots down here in Bama love ‘em. Thanks for the tips!

    It's gotta be something I'm doing different that I don't know I'm doing . I have better luck with a 1/4oz spybait with a 1/8 oz egg sinker, C rigged, than I do with 3/8 oz spybait the way it's supposed to be fished. It's more likely because there's a difference in size and weight and maybe theirs more rocking in the smaller lighter bait. Or it's a pitch in sound the heavier bait doesn't make.

    Matt- which way is more helpful to you- for us to buy Core Tackle products from TW using your affiliate link- or for us to just buy direct from the Core Tackle site? Or is it 6 of one, half a dozen of the other? I'm going to buy the rigs regardless, because they work exceptionally well and are super convenient, but if in the process I can help you out, I'd like to do so. I just put my kayaks up for the season- and I'm about to start reorganizing my terminal and stuff and ordering what I need for spring. I'm going to make a Core box with nothing but your rigs in it- because I honestly think for a lot of trips it's all I'll need. I'll make up a Plano speed bag with the plastics I need- and then I just need my rods and net and so forth. Man, that's going to be really nice- kayaks are so cramped- being able to save space and be efficient is everything.

    Is the Spy Bait a clear water bait, or does it also work in stained water?

    • @MattStefanFishing

      It’s better in clear but can be effective in off colored water

    I don’t know what I was doing last time. I went to a lake known for smallmouth and all I caught was 20 largemouth with the spy bait. lol! My spy bait must have been defective.

    Matt, ive been following you for years. Every winter i do maintenance on my reeks. 2 of my reels, when i set the hook last year and started to reel in it "slipped" a little. Ive messed with the drag etc any tips? Any videos on winter time maintenance?

    • @MattStefanFishing

    Great video topic, spybaits aren't addressed much. Good information for those new to spybaits. Also good seeing some spinning gear used. Speaking of spinning gear subject, love to hear a quick and dirty explanation, could you break it down for us - When to use Spinning vs Baitcast - Braid vs Fluro...

    I fish it on a 7' 3 and a 7'6" ML with 6 lb test to get the best action. What lb test do you use Matt.

    When I first started playing around with Spybaits, I was fairly green and tried fishing it in high 40’s to low 50’s °F and hooked into a 1 12 Rainbow.
    What temp would you recommend for cold water Spybaiting?
    Would you try slowing trolling with this?
    Would you try sweeping and pausing to let it shimmy like fishing a cold water tube but at your desired depth?

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you can try both of those retrieves but generally slower the better. cold water is in the 50's or lower

    Matt, wouldn’t you want to use the lowest gear ratio reel available to use a spy bait? Thank you for the the information on using these baits!

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It helps slow the bait down but not absolutely necessary
