    I remember dealing with Zurvan pugs around the time the fight had come out. I had just finished leveling Dark Knight to 60, after I just came back to FF14 (Had originally played it to around level 25 on DRG when it first launched with ARR). I had two friends actively playing FF at the time, one who was a bit ahead of me, having capped a couple months before me, and another who had been raiding since Coils in ARR, and was in a static still working on finishing up A12S. My friend in the static immediately crafted me a full set of tank gear. Within the week the 3 of us were trying to kill Zurvan, and every time we would queue into farm parties, saying "we were clearing on our alts," despite two of us having barely even glanced at a guide. We were both tanks for the fight to top it all off, but after a couple weeks of pissing off at least 100 people hopping between farm parties, we did eventually get our clear.

    As someone who started in the Patch Gears of Change: for FFXIV Heavensward, I 100% agree that it was a dark time, I was never more lonely than I was then just going through the motions and I was so insane I leveled Dark Knight from 30-60 SOLELY through FATE's (granted that was an entirely personal choice).
    One of things that infuriates me to no end is when...(and this is where I go off the deep end just a fair warning)...I cannot stand the people who say the game could do without post ARR and Stormblood, this is a completely (in my opinion) false statement because Endwalker could not have been the "Ultimate End" that it was without the worldbuilding that took place in those stages of the stories and far more importantly even the events of the First played a massive role without that We would still have two unsundered walking around and the true identity of the one behind the Final days would elude us.
    As a writer world building is so incredibly important and its one of the reasons that I think WoW storytelling continues to fall off, they just don't do it anymore, to this day I have used the New Game + feature to replay Stormblood a lot more than I have to replay Heavensward or Shadowbringers for that matter, but the sad fact is the typical gamer wont ever care about world building and its a real shame to see all that essentially tossed to the wind as "Useless", or "Unnecessary".

      I'm going back through ARR for the first time since having to sprint through the post patch content to try and get current just prior to the HW release, so that long, drawn out slog made me hate that content. That and we couldn't kill mooogles that needed it.

    Part of the soar problem is people could skip the first soar... but not the second, and the first one kind of teaches you how to do the mechanic and is fairly easy to resolve

  • @christenlanger

    Man, I remember the skip soar meme during its notoriety. I was playing on the JP servers so there was no problem with PUGs. In fact, Soar was the least of PUG's problem due to the gigabrain double tank stack mechanic.

    Pepsiman killed my static and my FC during Gordias. I mained PLD which felt really bad during HW.. TP issues.. magic block issues.. low DPS. I managed to do all the ex fights up until Zurvan but by the end of the expansion, with no static and party finder out if its mind, I sat Zurvan out. Not until end of Stormblood with unsync and Wondrous Tales, I got Zurvan Ex on my board and joined a PF for what I hoped was a quick unsync kill. First pull he died, mount drop, and I won the mount. I didn't go back to Zurvan after that lol

    Oh man. SWTOR will be a blast. It was my first MMO where I started at launch, became a part of a serious guild, and raided some very hard content at the time. BUT you don't need to raid or do dungeons to enjoy the game. In fact, I'd say most of the people who play SWTOR stick with it because each class story is so awesome and unique. It's a truly story driven game with great classes and opportunities to do whatever you want in game. And Preach, since you said you didn't like the gameplay, there are story mode missions, dungeons (called flashpoints in SWTOR) and even raids, where you will get to experience everything at a much easier level in order to see the story and not have to get too serious. And no, it's not like LFR where your general nincompoop joins in for gear/character progression. When you try it, I think you will really enjoy it now that you have experience with FFXIV

  • @scotaloo77g73
    @scotaloo77g73 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I played Heavensward back in the day and had to clear Zurvan 96 times to get the bird mount. You did not need tons of gear to skip soar, all you needed was a party full of people who knew their opener. That's all it required, just an opener. The mechanic happened so early the opener alone was enough to skip it and people still failed at this. Skipping the second soar required way more dps, the first one just checked whether you were a casual player or not.
    Soar wasn't a hard mechanic and people kinda knew how it worked, it was just really, really tight and mechanics weren't perfectly marked by the floor like they are now so everyone would constantly get hit by it.
    I don't know what they were talking about when they mentioned "class balance", because astrologian was considered to be a meme on release and people constantly prevented some tanks from coming to savage, depending on what the boss did. Dark Knights were good at mitigating magic tankbusters and Paladins were better at physical ones. You really didn't want a Paladin tanking magic tankbusters.

    I was a Warrior - which is not AT ALL what i normally play, as im usually a DPS.
    Soar was a nightmare since we couldn't really see why we were all dying, but just as we were getting the hang of it, we were getting so good in the 1st half of the fight, that we ended up skipping soar constantly.
    I've proudly beat Zurvan Ex twice now but im still not sure i learned Soar in the end xD

    Kudos to the author of the last story for sticking her ground on party finder. I play both FFXIV and WoW and I'm so glad FFXIV dungeons are designed in a linear fashion because I am so sick of people skipping entire sections of dungeons in WoW. What's wrong with doing the fight as intended? It's the same way in SWTOR, I have seen more wipes because people went out of their way to try to skip half the dungeon instead of just doing it.
    I know my complaints will fall on deaf ears because people will do anything to save .2 seconds in a dungeon run but I really wish the WoW community would just do the dungeons as intended.

    • @akaling100
      @akaling100 ปีที่แล้ว

      I played SWTOR from launch for about a year and half. Back then, the serious sweaty players who do things like this weren't really that common. The general player base was just sort of amazed to be in a raid/dungeon and experience the cool stories in each one. It really reminds me of the way people describe vanilla WoW. When I walked around the main city on my Sith Assassin Tank wearing my Black and purple double sided lightsaber, I felt like a gigachad would have in 2004 wielding a Thunderfury.
      As far as linear raids, I remember them being very linear in SWTOR's first 4-5 raids, almost to a fault, because the trash reset. Every wipe meant clearing the trash again lol.

    I remember those times. Tanks were required to use strength accessories at the time because those gear pieces weren't class locked at those levels. Doing so sacrificed health for more dps so tanks were also more prone to dying.

    I remember 'Skip Soar or disband' being a thing. Never took part in it though.
    As while I started in ARR, i switch from DPS to Tank in Heavensward
    guess why :p
    so with learning a new role, and REALLY busting my ass to hold agro some times i didn't feel i was up to the task of Savage or Extreme, these days are different, naturally, but back then, hearing all the negativity around the high end raid scene is probably part of the reason I didn't and still don't really have anything to do wit Savage or Extreme.

    Either tell them to go in a private zone or kick them. Also, don't let RP bleed into IRL. If you encounter that, get some distance, wait a couple days, then clear the air and move on. It happens, but it's not okay to dwell on it.

    Zurvan pfs were truly terrible in HW, mostly because dps rotations were dependent on cross class dps buffs. Because of that, oftentimes the need for 5 dps was idiotically what people required because they just sucked at dps and mechanics. Soar was just the mechanic from normal mode with more damage and no telegraphs. I think I joined prog groups in 5.5 not knowing anything about skip soar and did soar 1 and 2 no problem. Groups that wiped to it just sucked ass

    I've been playing since beta and people loved heavenswars when it came out. There are always people who will bitch and moan, and the forums have always been a cesspool of negativity. I will say people were upset wirh bowmage and machinist for sure. And other things here and there, no different from now. But if you think Heavensward was some kind of hellscape you need a better circle.
    Listen even further. Idleshire was a funny community name because people always afk somewhere and you could show off mounts and people loved how it upgraded over time. People were upset about the large time gap in Endwalker too. Going from 3 month cycle to 4 month. People claimed it was the end of endgame raiding when they delayed the Ultimate last expansion. And people are upset now about machinist, job balance and P8S..
    It also got a lot of acclaim and attention. It was one of, if not the first wow refugee meme starting points. As the video says, Zepla and others came over during this phase. And PF is always mob mentality.

    • @nahuel3433
      @nahuel3433 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get the complaints about SB's pacing because it does have problems.
      I don't get how HW gets scott free from them. The game literally teases you that you are about to do a big thing (Talk to Hraesvlgr, go to the Aery to kill Niddhog, Chase after the Arch Bishop into Azys Lla)
      And then cockblocks you for several hours (Moogle shenanigans, You need a mana cutter, Azys Lla has a shield so you got to do an entire area barely related with the current plot before you can actually chase)
      Yeah SB is a slow burn but when it gets going it gets going HW starts getting going and then hits the pacing with a baseball bat to the knees.
