Shows how smart Doubledealer is. He didn’t even consider the fact the Autobot he was trying to kill held a device that could answer ANY question! What did he think was going to happen?
I love how some of these names (Doubledealer, Swindle, Flip Sides) are obvious illusions to negative aspects of their character, but everyone remains oblivious to that fact until it's too late.

I like it. Never really been a fan of bots who could turn into beasts. The Missile Carrier is cool, anyways.
Hes like the robo-hawk from judas priest's screaming for vengeance album cover, or the eagle war-plane from pink floyds the wall. I love it! =]
Doubledealer was always one of the more interesting characters to come out of G1 related media. There aren't a lot of bounty-hunter-esque characters in transformers, so learning about one is always fascinating.

I found him in my loft and thought 'oh cool another autobot, wait whys this move if the vehicle is do-oh he's a triple changer....wait. which is he? Who is he?!'
@Kristopher Prime I only just learned about Doubledealer through the manga.
Honestly, I think the Powermasters were probably the last real high point of Western G1. Big, cool toys with interesting transformations, fun altmodes, and a gimmick that works well. You really have to wonder which Hasbro executive looked between Submarauder and Dreadwind and picked the former as the model for all the larger toys of the line's next year. And Doubledealer was easily one of the best Powermasters.
The choice was probably purely a cost saving measure to eek whatever last drops of profit they could out of the waning line.
@@EmeralBookwise I certainly wouldn't doubt it. Most of the Pretenders, even the Mega and Ultra varieties, had about as many moving parts as a Minibot.
And possibly one of the best master concepts because you can display them beside their big robots without it feeling too incomplete
These switching transformers are like Superman and Clark Kent. Somehow nobody notices they look identical
I’d never even heard of Double Dealer until I saw him in IDW comics.
And I had no idea he was supposed to be a triple-changer.
So thank you for filling us in on his backstory!
Double Dealer deserves so much more. I want to see him and Punch/CP to star in something together

@@Angel_Love6680 technically Counterpunch is an Autobot disguised as a Decepticon (or in some cases just a Decepticon personality) but either way he is definitely loyal to one of the factions.

That IDW spotlight, found in a public library, was my first introduction to IDW comics, and indeed my first exposure to any transformer comics after the fall of Dreamwave, the comics I'd read as a kid. I enjoyed it very much, but it wasn't until a few years after that I realized it was part of an ongoing comic universe. I was so glad to have ongoing transformers comics after that :>
It helped that most stories were written/drawn by fans turned professionals (even Simon Furman was involved with the comics). Some of them even got started in Dreamwave.
The best thing about Doubledealer for me will always be the missile dong in his bird mode.
And I didn't even own that toy.
I think I remember having a bootleg toy of this when I was a kid. IT was broken and couldn't transform anymore but I brought it with me everywhere anyway, man never thought I'd get nostalgic over an obscure character
I kinda like the idea of two people sharing the same transtector. The idea makes me think of either a brother and sister or maybe even a husband and wife not knowing the other has the bot. The girl wanting to rebel and act out and the boy being kind strait laced and goodie goodie. Really works as the bird is the "evil" one being able to fly freely and the bot being well as your said a Super Robot fighting for justice.
Not quite the same but in Super-God Masterforce, Overlord was the combination of the Godmaster husband and wife Giga and Mega. Giga was the tank and Mega was the jet. Still, your idea is different and interesting in its own right!

I always loved the concept of an Autobot mode and a Decepticon mode. I wouldn't mind owning a Doubledealer, Punch/Counterpunch, or an Animated Shockwave one day!

It's good that a character like DoubleDealer has had some involvement here and there in the franchise albeit very brief because this character has a lot of potential for future stories in western media, however Netflix did a solid by giving him a role in the recent show because it could lead to more involvement down the line.
I'm not massively into DoubleClouder but the idea used for Masterforce was interesting to see develop.
Since they've introduced the mercenary affiliation in the Transformers Earthrise Netflix series I wonder if this will mean that Lockdown will appear in a future episode of that show as one of the many Bounty Hunters on the mercenary faction
Still feel there's a great story to be done for this guy that properly uses his dual allegiance better ala what's been done with counter punch. Very underutilised.

What an intriguing concept for a "Transformer spy" & toy. I would've really liked to have seen him re-imagined in the Beast Wars show (hopefully w/ a double-barrel blaster). I think his "treachery" would've put schemers like Tarantulas to shame. And unlike Tarantulas, he'd actually have 2 loyal partners to work with.

Even though the show was short I still love the idea of a mercenary faction in transformers lore, I hope we see more of that idea

I guess Doubledealer could sorta be seen as the inspiration for Armada's Sideways, not a triple changer really but he did have slightly different robot forms between his Autobot and Decepticon guises IIRC

Having a transformer that can turn into both a bird and vechicle to ‘double deal’ is a real cool concept and I’m kinda sad it didn’t come back or get alliterated on in the future.

You’d think with Doubledealer’s unique mercenary personality in the G1 line, he’d be used far more often in the Marvel, DW and IDW 1.0 comics.
*While WFC Knok and Skar were remolds of cassette based molds, they weren't really cassette tapes. They were used in Doubledealer in pretty much the exact same way. So you could still consider them Powermasters.*

Doubledealer always gets the best deals. The best action figures, best transformation gimmick, and best stories in the comic books. You will not make a bad deal when dealing with Doubledealer.

Fantastic video about one of my favourite transformers of all time! I really hope he turns out to have survived in Siege as he could be such a fascinating character.

I would like to see a version of Doubledealer, (or at least a new transformer), that is a secret agent actively trying to bring down both Autobots and Decepticons for both causing and escalating the war on Cybertron and turning it into a planet wide wasteland.

@@chadderbug7587 I mean, there’s a lot of stuff to do on him. We got a new figure on him in the SS line, there were 2 different versions of him, and it’s only self explanatory for him to get a basics on him since he already did one on Galvatron and Cyclonus.

i just realized in the earthrise show the coneheads aren't like their toy but rather the siege seekers toy so possible generation selects toys might make them like the show model
I really hope they are repainted from the Siege mold.

I found a Generations Doubledealer at a garage sale this summer and was able to ID it thanks to this episode!
He lives up to the tagline "More than meets the eye".
Earthrise Double Dealer having a cassette chamber kind of makes me want to make a custom Soundwave out if him. I'd change his head and colors, see if I can give him a more Soundwave like chest, and turn the bird mode into a bat.
Damn, that seems like a pretty good idea.
The latest Doubledealer/Clouder figure actually has the Powermaster/Godmaster gimmick...the "engine" on his torso comes off and you can attach it to the back of the cassettes.
Fun fact from my history: When I was young, I have this faint recalling that I have actually handled G1 Doubledealer toy but didn't what it was at the time.
For that, I should really have ER Doubledealer toy. I admit though that his T30 does even to this day itch my interest (despite flaws what T30 Blitzwing mold had).
I would like Basics on Astrotrain as I would like to know (though I can guess) was his mold intented to be part of Diaclone series.
I remember the first time I saw G1 Double Dealer at a friend's house. Blew my mind. Toys back then had so much heft and presence.
I had the original and was a favourite :) but I lost one of the parts :( (Hmm, I'm surprised that that as far as I can tell there wasn't a story where Doubledealer encountered Punch/Counterpunch...)

This was a great video and BTW Doubledealer G1 I still have in my collection today. Just a cool concept for a character after we had only known good vs evil from the start.
I love that Doubledealer is the father of all allegiance switching Transformers we have like Armada Sideways, Cybertron Sideways (Noisemaze) and by further extension Animated Shockwave who has a undercover mode, the universe Dinobot toy and Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia toy who both can switch between Predacon and Maximal factions
He is such an interesting character and I have his earthrise toy and think that its pretry cool

@@originaluddite nope lol last time I transformed him I broke the leg off the peg. My dad needed to cut thr mushroom peg and put the leg back on. I'm never transforming him again. I didnt get much of the micro masters because I didn't really like them.
When Transformers are too scary to transform! We've all been there.
I remember seeing the Generation version toy in a toy shop but since I read beforehand with Blitzwing tight transformation which was the mold he was based from (still had the same issue), I didn't buy him!

I prefer the Masterforce version of Double Dealer.
Masterforce is pretty underrated...it's a shame we didn't get the anime in the West, instead of that god awful Rebirth miniseries...I just pretend it doesn't exist and watch Headmasters instead whenever I revisit the old series.
The slightly-off proportions of the shown kids(?) in Super God Masterforce just make me think of the Samurai Pizza Cats

WFC ER DD is one of my favorite figures, and I have the whole trilogy line.
How difficult it must be for Doubledealer to keep his identity a secret from both his powermaster partners.
His JP conversion was also like it.
Even though he was separated from his transtector, it hasn't stopped Clouder with former Seacons to join Autobots in final battle with a huge pile of weapons.
Even though they were late to party and Autobots already won.

The IDW comic was my introduction to Doubledealer
I like the Japanese concept way more. It makes so much more sense if the Headmasters and Godmasters are the actual guys, and the big robots are just their mechs.
It sort of takes them back to their Diaclone toy origins as mechs. Personally, I like sentient alien robots, but it was good they decided to change things and keep it interesting.

@@HiperPivociarz The Headmasters are Cybertronian. They fled the war and crashed on a planet so dangerous in atmosphere, that they had to build bigger and stronger bodies to survive. And of course, it's the origin of the Godmasters (thanks to Devil Z!).

I wanted to bring this up since Double Dealer doesn’t show up that much.
My very first introduction to the character was in a fan made movie series here on TH-cam, MLAATR The Transformers Saga!
Double Dealer shows up in two of the four (soon to be five) movies, and because I have nothing better to do, I’ll go over what he did and what he was like:
Bumblemus Prime’s Double Dealer Explained:
Who is he: Double Dealer, in this new continuity, starts out as a sideless mercenary, who eventually has his eyes opened to the heroism of the Autobots. After aiding them in battle, he began a quest to become a better bot, and ultimately save the day!
MLAATR The Giant Robot’s Revenge:
His first ever appearance was in the second movie in the saga, where he was hired by the side-villain, Serpent Judge. Here, he had been in charge of capturing prisoners and bringing them to their trails. One fateful day, he had brought out two Autobots, (Hot Rod and Kup) and their robot allies (Jenny and Vega) for trial. The four survived the onslaught of Fish-Bots and drove away the evil serpent. Not wanting to be on the loosing side, Double Dealer shot down the Serpent Judge as he lunged towards the heroes, and then asked to join their squad. From there, Double Dealer first aided in repairing the damaged Ultra Magnus, and then, during the final battle, struck down the Cluster police chief, Snarus. Following the final battle, Double Dealer swapped sides and became a full time Autobot.
MLAATR Age Of The Quintessons:
The second appearance of the character was in the fourth movie. Here, he spied on the alien Quintessons as they rebuilt and reprogrammed Optimus Prime into the evil Nemesis Prime. Knowing that his allies needed more men to save the day, he copied the technique the Quintisons used to revive several deceased Autobots, and enlisted the help of new Autobots into a massive strike force that could take down the alien invaders. During the climax, he lead a small team as they infiltrated Lockdown’s ship and placed explosives on the engines. Later on, he ensured that the returning Optimus Prime gained the Golden Disk, which was later used to take down the Quintesson leader. It was his efforts that were instrumental to the Autobot victory in the movie.
And that’s all! Again, this was my first ever time I ever saw Double Dealer, and it’s what lead me here. So yeah, I wanted to share this really fast!

It’s kinda annoying how he’s usually a villain, rather than morally ambiguous.
I do hope in future incarnations he's more in the middle from being an autobot or decepticon but always watching his back to whatever see fit for him
As a kid this was one of my favorite transformers to play with. I never had him unfortunately one of friends did. So I only got to play with it at his house. I really liked his 3 different forms a lot.
