    I can still remember the day I stumbled upon Powermaster Optimus Prime in a toy store as a kid. My mom and I had stopped in to find something for my sister's birthday, and there he was - Optimus freakin' Prime. And he was a Powermaster?!?! All of this was new to me, and I was absolutely mesmerized by the box. I must have stood there for quite some time, because my mom laughed when she came back, and I was still staring at the same toy. I don't know what I'd done right at the time, but she gave in and got it for me. My Autobots finally had their leader, and that toy remains a favorite of mine to this day. I'll always love the Powermasters for that toy alone.

      Kind of the same thing happened to me. Didn't have the same level of attachment to my Powermaster Optimus Prime -- I'd really wanted and loved the original one, the way it transformed, but never talked my folks into buying me one before he was discontinued. But finally getting AN Optimus Prime was still a very, very fond childhood memory.
      And with G1 rerelease toys, I finally own a G1 Optimus Prime, which makes me smile every time I see him on my display shelf.

    I prefer the Powermasters concept. As Godmasters aren't actual Cybertronians, more like mecha. And I love the idea of a human partnering with a transformer to provide them with energy in an environment where energon might be scarce. It's nice that the human could actualy have a purpose in the partnership, and leads to lots of interesting ideas of withholding or boosting energy. Plus I like the image of a transformer trying to find food for it's human.

    This actually an awsome subject to talk about,especially since ot comes to powermaster.I love the idea of transtectors and the fact that either wearing exosuit is a organic being and a small robost are the means by which these cybertronians are allowed to change into thier proper forms

    I'd never thought about it but you're right, it's the only gimmick that has never been revisited. We've had headmasters, target masters, pretenders but never have powermasters. I'd say the closest we came was in Cybertron with the planet keys that unlocked power ups. And even that is a stretch!
    As a kid I viewed the powermasters as a kind of filter that allowed for a more pure energy for the transformers

      These days old Powermasters are reimagined as Headmasters. Recently, Doubledealer's buddies have been reimagined as casettes much like Soundwave's. I guess those two paths are the directions moving forward.
      That, or Prime Masters.

    • @mcart4762
      @mcart4762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@rikajougasaki3296 good points however since in the case of headmasters the primary play factor was that the heads became pilots/drivers. Target masters, the guns became robots pretenders, a robot goes into a shell disguising the robot within. All have been duplicated.
      Powermasters unlock the transformation. Has never been duplicated.
      I would say that there has been one single exception...
      Primus. In Cybertron you need that key thing to transform him. Closest thing other than cyber planet keys I can thing of to powermasters.

    • @mcart4762
      @mcart4762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@erubin100 similarly to cyber planet keys I mentioned, yes. They unlocked certain functions but they didn't unlock transformation which was the whole play pattern for this gimmick. As I mentioned in another comment there HAS been one comparable toy, Primus. Needs that key thing to unlock transformation.
      Honestly I think what happened is so many parents probably complained after little Timmy broke his toy after loosing the powermaster (guilty!) That Hasbro pretty much scrapped the idea.

    • @danieldees9686
      @danieldees9686 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I prefer the Japanese late G1 lore to the Western take as well as stanning Ginrai. Dude's a 19 years old trucker who loves combing his hair, but then he finds some magic bracelets, his friends get merced, he starts a blood feud with the responsible parties, and vows vengance, as one does.
      But before the year's out Ginrai's grown into a competent albeit cocksure leader inspiring his troops - including four Cybertronians possibly millions of years older than himself - to become much more than just the sum of their own parts, becomes a big brother/father figure to the Headmaster Jrs., learns mercy with Dealer's stay at Mountain Base, and even grieves the absolute loss of his opponents' humanity after the bittersweet victory in which he avenges his fallen friends.
      Ginrai's character progresses and develops better than any other character in that show. By the end of Super God Masterforce (suppose Super Robot Sentai Life was a bit on the nose) I like to think there was a symbiosis between Ginrai's own spirit and some of the wisdom and personal traits of the transtector's intended spark via space magic.
      I think Ginrai's had some intended spiritual successors like Kicker that egregiously miss the mark, but the combination of burning justice and fighting spirit tempered with mercy and compassion is unique in many ways. Ginrai feels like G1 Animation Rodimus "done right" imo, and I'd love to see a series of God Ginrai and the Masterforce and Headmasters casts set after the series and before Victory. God On!

    The idea of the Powermasters themselves is an interesting one, kinda creating a sort-of symbiotic link between the transformers and humans that do add a bit more importance to the human partners in the series. It’s a shame the concept hasn’t been revisited in recent years.

I did have the comics though. Getaway's design is so cool. My biggest issue was the size of Optimus' head... It is huge compared to the rest of his body. Overlord was released later than the others- I got him with Motorvator Lightspeed - possibly the last of my Transformers toys when I was little before I got into TMNT.

On both multilingual European packaging variants (which are arguably more common), they were definitely spelled "Powermasters" as a single word, just like the Cyberjets became "Mini-Jets" in Europe, the Laser Cycles became "Lasercycles", the Auto Rollers became "Autorollers", and the G2 Go-Bots became "Gobots".

    I'm not really a fan of either official take on powermasters but actually have my own headcannon/idea for powermasters.
    Basically late into the war sometimes bots t-cogs would get damaged beyond repair and replacements wouldn't be available, so both the Autobots and Decepticons would run experiments to get around this, leading to the creation of 'powermasters'. A minicon who volunteered for the program would be bonded to a full-sized bot and when the minicon powered up the bot like usual the full-sized bot would also be able to use the minicons t-cog for themselves, allowing them to transform again.
    That's just my own concept if they ever decided to bring them back though!

    • @EmeralBookwise
      @EmeralBookwise 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've always been more a fan of organic partners. So while headmasters are pilots and targetmasters are tactical gunners, powermasters are engineers. I see them as managing the robot's energy distribution and other support systems.
      They aren't actually any stronger or faster than a regular transformer, but they can seem that way as the partner is able to reroute power wherever it is needed most at any given time.

    The headcanon I have to keep both Western & Eastern versions of lore, along with the new names for things, has it like this: Targetmasters, Headmasters, & Godmasters are humans or other organic beings bonded to Transformers or Transtectors; Battlemasters, Titanmasters, and Powermasters are sub-groups of Minicons and are small robots that fulfill the same role.

  • @MaxRawhide
    @MaxRawhide 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Marvel Comics gave another purpose for the Powermaster process in issue #68, and indirectly #75. Starscream notes that the fuel the TF's take on Earth is of lower quality than Cybertronian fuel. As a result they constantly operate of only a fraction of their normal levels. The powermaster process corrected this and more.
    Not only can the powermaster exist on different types of fuel, but it's always converted into the optimal power source making the TF operate on maximum capacity and thus stronger and faster than a regular TF.

    My god Chris, GOOD Video.
    I never knew till today that the Motor/Power-source-form in Super God Master Force was called 'Iacon' i almost drop my coffe hearing that!!!
    I think that THIS gimmick was perhaps the most effective of all. I mean: The headmasters are awesome but let be honest: The fact that it's a head makes kinda tricky the conception of WHERE its the 'conscience' both robot and nebulan/human in the American Lore and with that we cant tottally understand if they are simbiotic or a gelstat-way kind of counscience 'two beings in one body' ok, but with ONE of that beings forming the head makes me difficult to think that the Robot has ANY counsciense of its own... And if the soul of the robot emerges when its fused with the head, then its akward because: what its the final use of the person/robot that forms the head? Futhermore in the comics Zarak contols the Skorponok body without being connected to it. In HM anime they made a good interpretation of that making the little robot being THE robot...
    IN THIS CASE!!!!!!!!!!!! MY GOD!!! They are their energy-sources in the original conception... SO: There is no doubt that its a parasite-simbiotic relationship!! AND FUTHERMORE: IN JAPAN!! MY GOD JAPAN!!! THEY ARE GIVING THE SOULESS BODY A SOUL TO BE BORN AND DEFEND THE UNIVERSE... Sorry but for me THIS was the best re-interpretation of the Transformers concept in the 80s.

      I didn't know about them being called "Iacons" either. Looking it up on the TFWiki, this term was apparently only ever used on the toy packaging and never in the Masterforce cartoon or comics. (Which explains why I was unaware of it, since the only toys I had were the US versions.)
      In the US, the robots that became Headmasters simply had their "personality" contained in their bodies rather than their heads. (I don't remember the exact terminology used. They downloaded their personality into their bodies before removing their heads or something of that nature.)
      "...what its the final use of the person/robot that forms the head" The US cartoon briefly shows the Autobots (prior to the events that led them to become Headmasters) testing and performing some tasks more efficiently when they let a human do the driving, etc. (Obviously, in reality a toy company told some writers to write a story around a new gimmick, and they did the best they could under the circumstances.)

      That's kind of the reason I don't care for Masterforce, it feels more super sentai show to me than Transformers show. Not hating on it, but when you take the majority of the "spark" if you will out of the show, I lose interest.

    If I could bring back a Transformers series that dealt with the Headmasters, Targetmasters, and Powermasters, I would have a 21st century version of Masterforce. By the way, Overlord should have been brought to the United States in 1988 as Gigatron. He could have come from Nebulos as Scorponok's secret weapon of destruction. Giga and Mega could have been Gigatron's Nebulon partners.

    If I remember correctly, I heard or read somewhere years ago that the Autobots had planned on reviviing Optimus with the Transtector that Ginrai found. I could be completely wrong on that, so if someone wants to correct me, then by all means.

    • @twistedgaming9185
      @twistedgaming9185 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It gets sketchy. The clip show Masterforce Super-Secrets tried but failed to explain how the transtector would have brought back Prime. The Legends manga clarified that the transtector was found in G Nebula. And then a new transtector was built in another attempt to revive Prime... until it was sent to Ginrai to deal with a revived Devil Z since Unite Warriors had Prime brought back by Vector Sigma (just for one week, until Return of Convoy).

    I remember watching the Godmaster cartoon and as they keep building up to Ginrai's transtector I was thinking "oh crap, it's Optimus Prime!" Even after he transforms he looks exactly like Optimus Prime, but the show never acknowledges it. I guess Convoy just wasn't that popular in Japan.

    • @Hektols
      @Hektols 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The transector that was Ginrai's body at first was created as an upgrade for Convoy/Optimus Prime but it was stolen by the villain before he could get it, for that reason they look the same.
      In several dubs of the God Masters anime the dubbing team said "screw it, that's Optimus Prime" and called him Optimus Prime, watchers thought that Ginrai was Optimus Prime reincarnated as a human.

    • @cartervandenberg4771
      @cartervandenberg4771 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hektols As ridiculous as that sounds I would actually love it if it really was Optimus Prime reincarnated as a human. That's the kind of thing that could only come from Japanese Transformers.

    • @twistedgaming9185

      Japan has the habit of replacing old heroic leads with new leads every season/year. Takara was no different, after the third season finale in G1, Prime dies again in Headmasters. He was brought in Return of Convoy... which was just Takara jumping the shark.

    • @KasumiKenshirou
      @KasumiKenshirou 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was only a sentence in a clipshow episode of Masterforce that stated that the "Ginrai" transtector had originally been intended as a new body for Optimus Prime. I think "Convoy" was popular with the KIDS that were watching the show, as he's constantly getting new Masterpiece figures. In Japanese G1 he was eventually brought back in toy form as "Star Convoy".
      It was probably just like in America, where the people running the toy company didn't know just how popular the character was until later.

  • @AustynSN
    @AustynSN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I always thought there should have been toys that were both power and head masters with the same mini-figure. Not sure how this would have worked exactly, but basically, the mini figure would be a tripple changer with head/robot/engine forms. This especially would have worked with Optimus Prime. A name like "Hi-Q" just seems like it should have been a head master instead of a power master. Heck, throw in a transforming version of Prime's classic ion blaster to make him a target master too and call it "Ultimaster Optimus Prime".

  • @sidearmsalpha
    @sidearmsalpha 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Been a fan of Headmasters since the Titans Return line and then the Japanese Legends line stepped things up by incorporating Targetmasters which I also really like. They need to bring back the Power Masters fittingly. I hated that Darkwing and Dreadwind were just retooled Combiner Wars Aerialbots with a half-assed attempt at making them Power Masters and a combined mode. At least they were good to use as alternate arms/legs for Combiner Wars combiners. Definitely want to see a proper Power Master Optimus from Hasbro. Good thing Perfect Effect made the TR/Legends Ginrai version a true God Master figure.

  • @Andyjoe522
    @Andyjoe522 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    From the toy side of things, I can't say I see the appeal to this gimmick. If all they do is lock away the main figure's ability to transform behind inserting the mini figure, then they're not really adding anything to it over a standard Transformer toy. I feel like the Minicons absolutely did this concept better.

Now almost 50 years old and a stroke and cardiac arrest and now colon cancer survivor and living alone and getting a Disability check from the government here to live off I still love collecting the odd transformer toy. I wish they made a comeback specially many of the characters in Masterforce as how they where intended, the Headmasters Jurniors (Cab, Minerva, Shuta), the pretenders, all the amazing characters in the show, be in a Japanese exclusive show (its been a while since Japan make a new anime for Transformers I will love to see something new from there) or in a comic.

So he decided to bond with the body and be the additional power source needed to allow Optimus to live again in a physical body.

    Interesting how the Japanese storyline slowly worked its way back to the Diaclone concept of piloted mecha, which I guess makes for more human-relevant story-telling. And then there's the practically Shinto incorporation of more spiritual elements to these machines that moved the story away from science fiction.

    My HeadCanon: The PowerMasters was highly advanced Headmaster technology; The nebulons discovered the Master Force and Integrated it into HeadMaster. Instantly Hyper advancing HeadMaster technology into PowerMaster Technology, They created Master Force Bands and They also Invented Transtechers. A Human or Nebulon can use the Master Force Bands to Transmute their Bodies into Robot ones to become engines for the Transformers. A Transtecher is a lifeless robot body that When PowerMaster becomes it Engine, He or She will complete control over it. A Godmaster is something different, when a Human who’s mastered Chōkon power uses the Master Force Bands to become a PowerMaster and merge with a Transformer they become a GodMaster and their both able to use Chōkon Power to far greater extent. When a Transformer becomes infuse Chōkon power, The Transformer starts slowly dying and can only be saved by Merging with a human through the human becoming a PowerMaster with it, this also results in to them becoming a GodMaster and able use the Chōkon power to far greater extent. If Human masters Chōkon and become a PowerMaster engine for a Transtecher, nothing changes they don’t become a Godmaster but if two people who mastered Chōkon uses one Transtecher at the same time they are Able to boost their Chōkon power massively, becoming a False Godmaster; but they will have great drawbacks to this, like their Chōkon becoming uncontrollable and If not working in unison there Chōkon power and Transtecher becomes all but useless
    Trivia
    Chōkon Power is dangerous to Sparks but Given to souls
    Chōkon power infused Transformer only survive by becoming a Godmaster with a human
    When a Transformer becomes a Godmaster their Spark and Soul are United making it to be a true bond between Cybertronian and Human
    Becoming a PowerMaster with Transformer is highly increase in Survival for both and works even better than Headmasters
