  • The series takes viewers on an imposing visual journey through a unique island paradise in the border region between Canada and the United States. The wild beauty of islands and their landscape, some of it untouched, have fascinated people for centuries.
The films depict the different faces of this island world, from luxurious summer residences to the legendary secret island, from historical estates to the untouched wilderness of the nature reserves.

A fine travel doc that has really captured the culture and vibe of the Canadian side (+Dark Island) through these individual stories. Sadly, Ian Coristine died 15 Feb 2020 but his superb photography has defined the visual history of the 1000 Islands for the past 25 years. His aerial view of the Admiralty Group (of islands) where the featured 19th century cottage is located and which fronts the Town of Gananoque is the subject of one of the latest series of Canadian stamps and postal cards issued less than 3 weeks ago (6 May 2024). It would be good to see a companion doc featuring the mirror image American side to contrast and complete the story.

An interesting tour of a part of Canada that reminds me of how little of that country I had the opportunity to visit while living mainly in the Maritimes from 1961-1973; beautiful 1000 Island homes that appeared to be vacant.

My Grandparents lived just outside of Gananoque on an Island. Have an Uncle who still lives there.
