Agreed. And I say that as a diehard Indians/Guardians fan. Gallaraga was dealing that day. In fact, this game is so legendary that I use this in Philosophy class when we talk about subjectivity and reality construction. The core question is, who decides what is real and what isn't? Well, in a baseball game, the answer is one person.
@@brianrooker8527 Galarraga doesn’t play anymore, but I don’t think that’s true regarding Joyce. He was considered the best ump in baseball by the majority of players.
Dave Stieb lost two no-hitters in two consecutive starts, each were with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning. The mathematical odds of this happening were 1 in 241 million.
What's even crazier odds is that the person who ended up catching halladays broken up no hitter ball was Dave stieb, who had come out of retirement of like 6 years to pitch as a reliever in the league. On top of that, the homer was hit by a leftie to the far right field wall which the batter almost never did
He had another he lost with no out in the ninth when the White Sox hit back to back homeruns, and another off the reliever. Sox fans finished the eighth cheering for the no-hitter, but with a couple of homers, they were back cheering for the Sox.
That was an all-time great moment in MLB history. Reconciliation. Civility. Sportsmanship from one of the arbiters of the sport itself. Gallaraga's graciousness. Too rare, very special.
It doesn’t change that he screwed up a perfect game. Everybody in the stadium knew he was out and he had the best view and couldn’t make the right call. Apologize all you want but you need to do better
You didn’t include the most devastating one. Rich Hill threw a no-hitter through 9 innings against the Pirates, however, it was 0-0 before Josh Harrison hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th to not only have Hill lose the no-hitter, but for the Dodgers to lose the game!
Dave Stieb took a no-hitter into the ninth inning a few times. He came within one out against the Orioles and I think I listened to the ninth inning of that game on the radio. He finally got a no-hitter in 1990. Bill Bevens was one out from a no hitter in the 1947 World Series. He walked several batters and gave up a two out double in the ninth to Cookie Lavagetto and lost the game.
You forgot Max Scherzer, when Jose Tabata intentionally leaned into a pitch one out from a perfect game, and the home plate umpire Mike Muchlinski blew the call.
In 1968 I was 17 and spending a week at my much older married cousin’s home in Baltimore. The old guy across the street, Don, together with his brother had four season tickets for the Orioles about five or six rows directly behind home plate and they took my cousin and I for a twi-night doubleheader against Oakland. The A’s had Blue Moon Odom and Vida Blue, two of the most prolific pitchers in baseball at the time going that night. During the first game my cousin’s neighbor was on the home plate ump really hard as Oriole after Oriole went down. Around the fifth inning the ump walked up to the screen, pointed his finger and said, “Don, if you keep it up I’ll have you marched out of here again.” Don instantly became my hero, he was such a legend that the ump knew him by name!!! To cut to the chase, it got to the bottom of the ninth and Odom had not given up a hit. He retired the first two batters and the Orioles catcher, Andy Etchebarren, probably the worst hitter in the lineup, walked to the plate and delivered a broken bat single to break up the no-hitter. Best part of all…..the Orioles home crowd booed him!!! 😂😂😂 It’s 56 years later and I’ll never forget that night.
I was at that game. I cut school to attend. When the much beloved Elston Howard lined a clean single he was given a standing boo by the opening day crowd of 15,000 (give or take) Yankee Rooters. I still have the scorecard to that game. About 5 years ago I contacted Bill Rohr, living in the San Diego area and had a wonderful conversation with him. Though he only won two more games in the Bigs, don’t feel too bad for him, he was an Attorney in San Diego. A hell of a nice fellow, too.
On Wed., Aug. 24, 1983 Chicago Cub starter Chuck Rainey had a no hitter with two out in the ninth .... at Wrigley Field, against the Reds .... and Eddie Milner lined a single to center to break it up .... I was watching live .... broke my heart ....
Was wondering if you’d include Milt Wilcox…always love me some Ernie Harrell calls, but the visuals of that game are seared into the memories of every Tiger fan
The Wilcox was the first one I remember as a high schooler and Tigers fan. The only one here without video more than made up for by getting to hear the late great Ernie Harwell. The best there ever was.
Brandon Morrow had one in 2010 against the Rays. Had 17 strikeouts and took his no-hitter into the ninth with two outs before giving up a single to Evan Longoria.
0:35. The Pirates may have broken up a no hitter here, but they were no hit 12-0 by the Cubs last night in a combined effort. The way MLB keeps changing the rules about the game, solo no hitters/perfect games with be a thing of the past, as has complete games. In the old days pitchers were required to go the distance in a ballgame, unless they were knocked out of the game, or pinch hit for. If you wanted a raise in your next contract, a player would have a great season, including complete games. Now a pitcher is yanked for a reliever when he approaches 100 pitches.
I was at the Yusmeiro Petit game in 2013. That was a very fun game but incredibly disappointing to see a pitcher get within one pitch of a perfect game and lose it. If I remember correctly, a few borderline pitches were called balls, which had they been called strikes would've resulted in a perfect game
If I’m the batter in the galarraga game I’m 100% going off yelling I’m out. Get that man his perfect game. It’s just a hit for me. It’s history for him
Me in mlb the show. Lost a perfect game to settle for a no hitter bc a pitch that was in the high end of the strike zone, was called a ball and ended with a walk
If I ever get the chance, I need to apologize to Milt Wilcox for screwing up his bid for immortality. It was during my freshman year at college, and my suite mate breathlessly told me that Wilcox was pitching a perfect game. I charged over to his room just in time to see Jerry Hairston hit a single. Ironically, a year later, Hairston nearly broke up Jack Morris' no hitter with a hard grounder to first. However, my curse didn't come through that time, and my Tigers got their first no hitter in my lifetime.
more recently Corey Seager yet again ruined someone's shot at a no hitter. Framber Valdez was a singular out away from the no hitter. But Corey Seager hit a 2 run bomb that didn't matter since the Astros would win the next out. Framber got his first no hitter the previous season, but he was close to joining thirty-six other pitchers who have thrown multiple no hitters. The way I see it, Corey Seager really must love breaking up people's chances of no hitters at the very end of the game.
I'm sorry, but if I'm facing a pitcher who has had a perfect game and I'm the last out. I am putting my bat on my shoulders and letting him have that one. People may think less for fighting but it's such a rare thing. He can have my 1 out and get that status.
Honestly if I was an MLB batter facing the pitcher in a no-hit scenario, I would either take the ball or swing and miss. No point in ruining a moment like that for a meaningless hit.
I’m seeing a lot of pretty recent comments, the story of Dave Stieb is absolutely incredible, there’s a documentary about it on TH-cam if you’re interested
August 24, 1983. Chuck Rainey of the Cubs was perfect through six, walked a man in the seventh, walked a man in the 8th (who was forced by Johnny Bench in his last game in Chicago), got a double play to get out of the eighth, got the first man in the 9th and the pinch-hitter for Mario Soto, but then Milner got a base hit. I was at the game but in the men's room when Milner broke it up.
The Pirates lone run came from a groundout that scored Pirate's Centerfielder Bryan Reynolds from Third Base, who got on Third Base after he reached Second Base on an Error from the Left Fielder (E7, does not count as a hit, fielder messed up and couldn't get him out), and reached Third Base after Pirate's Right Fielder Jack Suwinski grounded out, allowing him to run to third base.
