  • Garden furniture is manufactured with all kinds of different materials. Every material has their own pros and cons.
This video explores the traits of the most commonly used materials.
The materials most used in garden furniture are:
    Aluminum
    Wood
    Wicker
    Plastic
    Aluminum
Aluminum is used the most in furniture with a contemporary design. It's often used as a frame for wicker bindings, as underframe for a table, or a completely aluminum set accompanied by some comfortable pillows.
A powder coating is applied to aluminum, ensuring it won't get rusty. Besides that, aluminum is very lightweight, making it easy to move around. Aluminum can take a hit, is weatherproof, easy to clean and doesn't require any maintenance.
A downside of aluminum is that it can become very hot when in direct sunlight. UV-rays can eventually alter the color to be a bit less vivid. Hinges can also be made from plastic instead of aluminum. Sets that are composed entirely of aluminum can usually be covered up during winter by using a cover. This cover protects the furniture against damage and UV-rays altering the color.
    Wood
Wood has a warm, natural and atmospheric look and is often used in tables. Unlike aluminum, wood doesn't get very hot in the sun. Wood will age and change color in due time. If you're not a fan of this, you can easily remedy or prevent it by using a maintenance product. Wood has a very long lifespan, if properly taken care of.
A downside of wood is that it has to be treated and maintained at least twice per year. Wooden furniture can be heavy, but if you leave the furniture in the same spot, that's not really an issue. Don't cover up wooden furniture, this can cause water damage. Put your garden furniture somewhere dry during the winter, or just leave them out -
and provide extra maintenance once the winter is over.
    Wicker
A material commonly used in loungesets is wicker. Wicker is often used in combination with an aluminum frame and comfortable pillows. Wicker is lightweight, water- and frostproof, easy to clean and maintenance friendly.
Wicker is woven with multiple long strands of plastic.
A downside of wicker is that throughout the years, discoloration is likely to happen and the wicker will get weaker, making it prone to breaking.
    Plastic
Last but not least, plastic. Plastic has been gone from the world of garden furniture for years, but has recently gained popularity again. Plastic can be manufactured in any desired shape and color. From modern bucket seats to comfortable loungesets. Plastic doesn't need any maintenance. To prevent dirt attaching itself to the material, you can use a wax polish designed for use on plastics. This adds a layer of protection. Thanks to the powerful UV-block, quick discoloration and aging because of sunlight is prevented.
As you now know, there is a variety of materials available.
If you prefer a natural look, wood is an excellent choice. But do keep in mind that this requires extra maintenance. If you're more of a contemporary person that likes minimalism and doesn't want to do any maintenance,
wicker, aluminum or plastic are all good choices.
