    Every angler has their favorite knots? But the longer we fish, the more we encounter situations where what we usually do just doesn’t work. So we learn from it. We research and we ask other anglers. And maybe we find a rig, a tactic or a knot that solves the problem.
    That’s part of what we love about this fly fishing game. It’s a never ending set of new circumstances and new mysteries with new solutions.
    Let’s consider the Uni-Knot. Because this one knot can do many different things. It solves problems and opens up opportunities.
    Here are uses for the Uni- Knot shown in the video:
    -- Tie on a fly (standard or as a loop knot)
    -- Attach flies as a trailer, and then back them off
    -- Create tags for droppers
    -- Connect two lines (Double Uni-Knot)
    -- Attach line to a reel spool
    -- Attach leader to fly line (through the loop or as a Nailless Nail Knot)
    -- As a stopper knot (for slidable dry dropper rig or as a bobber stopper)
    -- As a sighter while fishing nymphs or streamers
    Remember, the Uni Knot is always there, waiting to solve your problems.

    Uni knot along with double davy is one of my favorite knots! Another advantage of using it to add a dropper fly to a bend in the hook, is it's easier to tie than a clinch because you can pre-tie it on your finger and easily transfer it to the hook. Great video as usual!

    Recently showed my nephew the UNI knot and told him I used it for 90% of what I do while fishing ( knot related ). Fly, spin, or bait casting this knot is definitely a problem solver. Great video! I shared the video to him 👍

    I’ve used the Uni knot religiously for all my time fly fishing . It’s the first knot my dad taught me in the old bass boat as a kid . It’s nice to see that other people are using it and using it for far more then I knew I could ! Thanks for the tips ! ✌🏼

      Sounds like a keeper, for me though, I don't like that it takes so much line out of the tippet, and I am force to retie more often. On casting gear one has hundreds of yards on the spool. And with Roland Martin sized line, you can easily handle it and draw it up with pliers.

    • @HondoTrailside
      @HondoTrailside หลายเดือนก่อน

      I should say, that if one uses tippet rings, which I normally don't seem to be able to organize, then that would remove some of the issue around tippet consumption. This isn't just cheapness, sometimes things pick up and it is usually my time to discover my tippet needs retying. :)

    I got into fishing spin and fly 4 months ago, learned the uni knot first and then blood, palomar, surgeons, clinch, fg and perfection loop. I still use uni knot and perfection loop pretty much all the time. So easy, neat and strong.

    Great content! The backing barrel is a great tool. I recently had to do an on the water fly line connection and the Uni worked well! Didn't realize this was the "nail-less nail knot".

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, to be accurate, it's really close to the Nail less Nail Knot. Not exactly the same. Certainly works, though.

    • @HondoTrailside
      @HondoTrailside หลายเดือนก่อน

      My mentor, Alf Walker could do a nail-less knot with his bare hands. The trick is never exposing any of the fly line until you are ready to bend on the next wrap. Like Snelling a hook. But try as I may, I can't do it. My other mentor Jimmy Stark had an even simpler way...

    Back to back uni knot is 100% how I attach tippet to my leader. Been doing it for a couple of years now and it's never failed on me once.

    Great video ! I don't knew where I got the idea of the uni knot was complicated. With your description, I mastered it immediately, that's not easy to say when you're talking about the 16/20 knot or the basic blood knot.
    I have one question, when you are tying two sections of leader, at what size difference do you go to the double uni ?

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. Respectfully, I think you're misunderstanding something. You can't join two lines with a single/regular Uni. You need the double.

      The blood knot is a lot better for leaders, it is faster, smoother, handles different weights better, and it doesn't mater that it breaks more easily when your butt section is 20 thou and breaks at 40lbs, when your point is 6lbs.
      As far as difficult, there are a lot of videos on simpler hacks. My take is that most people can tie it easily if they learn to control the first tag. If you do that you are basically just tying two simple Clinch knots and most people seem OK with that. So say you have completed the first half, take that tag back into your weak hand and pinch it and all of the first knot. It can't slip apart, tying the second half is basically just a simple clinch, and once you have finished the wraps and pass through there, it won't come apart while you draw it up. Yeah, I know, it needs a video... The reason it is worth learning the traditional way is because it's super power is joining leader sections where you may be joining wildly different numbers of turns, and a lot of the easy methods mostly work with even numbers of wraps. I have seen salt water guides join two massive section of a blood knot with 2 wraps to 1 wrap. So it pays to be able to handle all the combinations.

      Thanks Hondo, but you’re right, a video would be great ! I can’t quite picture what you’re doing after you’re doing after the first knot.

    Used the backing barrel with the 20 LB Orvis Dacron and it changed my whole game. I picked up the sighter, meaning tag, so much quicker. Does it make sense to be making my euro leaders now without the colored sighter since there is no need. Thanks for all you do.

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wouldn't remove the regular colored line sighter. It shows direction, while a single backing barrel cannot do that. Cheers.

    This pretty different than a 16-20 (Pitzen) knot? Being able to adjust it seem to be a better advantage.

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it's different. And I agree, the advantage to slide it is a big thing. The Uni-Knot is really, really useful.

    So if you can slide the uniknot up and down the leader, then if you put a dry dropper above it, you would not have to tie the line around the eye of hook, it would hit the knit and stop. Am i understanding that correctly?

      @Troutbitten  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Could you hang a dry off of it when tied as an adjustable sighter?

    how would you attach 10lb braid to 4/6 lb fluorocarbon? My double uni always break off. I can do 10lb to 8lb just fine.

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmm. I don't have that problem. I would use the Double Uni, yes. Are you sure you're using enough wraps on the braid side? I'd use about a dozen.

  • @Gregory-fp5wk
    @Gregory-fp5wk 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What would you do to prevent the sliding when adding a tag line? In your demonstration there was a blocking knot but typically on a new leader it’s knotless

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand your question. But if I didn't have a knot there already, I wouldn't use a Uni Knot to make the tag. Here's the video with three great ways to make a tag dropper.
