Stellar Blade PS5 - Digital Foundry Tech Review - An Ultra-Polished Action Game
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 14 มิ.ย. 2024
- Stellar Blade has finally arrived for PlayStation 5 and we're delighted to say that this is an ultra-polished, highly enjoyable action game. Based on Unreal Engine 4, developer Shift Up isn't rewriting the technological rulebook in any way - but what is delivered is nigh-on flawless within its ambition. It's something of a tonic in a world where so many games ship with issues, requiring multiple patches to address. John Linneman has the DF tech review for you.

Balanced mode on my LG OLED is where it’s at 🤩
Honestly hearing that its like a PS2 era game on modern hardware sounds really appealing. A lot of AAA games are so bland and try to cater to too much, and are often buggy/broken. Games need to be more focused like this. Hope it comes to more platforms.
"PS2 era game on modern hardware"
I heard this and IMMEDIATELY thought "WOW, that has to be good!" PS2/3 to xbox360 was the golden era of gaming.
That's how I described it to my coworker. Feels nostalgic while having modern benefits.
Yh... we don't need 100 hours worth of content when that content is just collectibles. We also don't need hollywood actors to help sell games, all that this does is inflate the budget and resources needed.
Back when gaming was great.
exactly why it interested me, this is how games should be, as someone who plays PCSX2 a lot, this is right up my alley
John sold me at 'it's just a gosh darn enjoyable videogame.' What more do we need?
Depends on who you're asking. Are you asking someone?
If only modern day developers understood just how important this statement really is.
Hopefully Shift Up takes note of these types of reviews instead. That’s all that matters and a lot of reviewers clearly had a hell of a time no matter their overall review and score. A sequel or prequel is in high demand.

Great review, John. You sold me on this one. Kudos to the team for putting out a game in a great state.
A video game from 2003 built with modern tools is exactly what the industry needs more of and why I enjoy Nintendo games so much.
Took the words right out of my mouth
So, true. The games of 2003 to 2014 were already perfect. We need more fun games like this with no bugs rather than a buggy mess with good quality graphics like Cyberbugs and others.

If only nintendo knew how to game a game with good controls. Biggest issue with the new Zelda games is how bad the controls and core combat are

So apparently Shift Up made real sculptures of monsters first and then scanned them to import into the game, according to their bts video. That's some dedication. On another note, it's good to see good ol Tomonobu Itagaki decided to crash the party to celebrate new DJ John's EP.

Honestly I don’t think it’s that uncommon.a lot goes into the pre production of games/movies etc
This is actually easier than modelling them in 3D software by hand, it's just the tools used to be expensive in Hollywood and product engineering. 3D scanners, photogrammetry and automatic LOD generators are great automation tools that more games should use. And artists can actually have fun in sculpting.
I miss these fast-paced action-focused games. Too many games now have this slow, deliberate Souls inspired combat & I just want a game where I can chill & smash out some combos.
I really hope this comes to PC. It looks great.

The sequel will no doubt start development on 5, though.

It's a shame how the gaming press shunned him, his name is somewhat forgotten. He's a legend who pushed action games forward in a highly competitive era.
Miss him too..

Itagaki is a hero to me, that guy simply gave no f*cks and refused to be swayed from his vision of what a game should be, I admire that level of fortitude and determination.
I remember him on the XBOX 360 stage back in 2007 showcasing Ninja Gaiden 2. He mentioned how good the hardware was on the 360 and that Team Ninja was using the power of the console to create the best Ninja Gaiden game.

It’s great to see this game get the love and attention it deserves. This was a passion project from one guy, who grew into a team, and that team grew into a group funded by Sony to make the game they truly wanted without anything holding them back. Such a great story, and now from it a great game!
Shift Up existed for over tens years and is not funded by Sony. They're independent. They're also valued at over a billion dollars. They do have a publishing deal with Sony for this specific game, but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the game is self funded because their mobile games make so much dang money for them.
I'm not saying this to discredit Kim Hyung-tae in any way. Just that it's not just one guy or small team that came out of nowhere. There's hundreds of devs on that worked on this game.

A PC port will surely come.
1. This is a "smaller" Sony published game, so more chance to arrive on PC sooner.
2. This is a Korean developed game, and the PC is king in Korea.
3. It was in development for PC before Sony took over publishing duties, so at least a basic build already exists.
4. It is an Unreal Engine 4 game, so it's easy to port.

@OtakuBenny2210 I don't like the souls style games. Glad you liked that game. I haven't played BG3. I couldn't comment either way. I don't however engage with identity/division politics. People who do and argue about it, are people who are played like a fiddle by the MSM 24/7, brainwashed into picking sides and theories frok talking heads that engulf their lives, mainly because they lack anything more interesting to talk about or engage with. The world's top 2 percent wealthy, pay bad actors and other media darlings to keep propaganda being pumped at people online and on TV. The design of this is to make enemies between anyone based on differences with each other. These are strings of the masses that they pull and have people at each other like puppets, because they know united people stand together, divided people fall. It makes the masses more malleable and easy to mould for their agendas. They own everything and the online world that feeds you theories and propaganda. They infect your language with buzzwords and catch whatever trending zeitgeist they can as part of mass manipulation. I refuse to acknowledge any of it. I enjoy games for what they are and if I disagree with the message, I don't lose any sleep over it. No one is my enemy. What their private choices for their lives are don't affect me. Live and let live I say. Don't let yourself be played into engaging with any of the language they want you to use. If you don't like something, cool, don't engage. Whatever you do don't be a puppet. They win.
@@OtakuBenny2210 Goty will go to the game that had the most impact. Last year it was bg3 cause it's genuinely an amazing game that was able to attract lots of players (including me) who were never interested in dnd nor would have ever considered playing a game with turned based combat and give them a great RPG experience nonetheless. No other game last year did anything close to that. Lies of P was good but it had some glaring issues and it didn't get much attention cause as a souls-like it didn't really excel at anything and it wasn't genre defining and set new standards for the industry like bg3 and elden ring did the last couple of years.

I have a question @DigitalFoundry ...
You state at around 13:02 that Balanced Mode "feels like a mode designed for VRR displays and is the mode [you'd] suggest using *IF* (emphasis yours) you have such a monitor." I read this as implying that if one does NOT have such a display, or if one has a content creation setup (e.g. live streaming to Twitch) where frame rate is capped at 60fps, then Performance Mode's solid 60fps would be more desirable; is that a correct conclusion to draw from the above quote in context?
If you were recording a 60 fps vid it would be better to use performance mode, as the viewing audience would see all the dips in framerate, imo.
@@ThorStoneGaming That's my assumption, yes, that Performance would be the better mode to use in a 60fps recording/broadcasting setup because of the framerate dips, but also because of the way Balanced dynamically changes resolution, reducing the amount of visual data available, which in turn will likely have a negative impact on the quality of the encoded video going out... garbage in, garbage out
I'm loving everything that I'm hearing. I'm confident in my preorder and glad I'm getting a physical copy.
