Jim Carrey had a rough childhood. He was the youngest child of 5 growing up in the steel making area of Ontario. The family was dirt poor and at one time, they were homeless, living in a tent and VW van. Eventually his dad got a job at the tire plant and the family moved into a company house across the road. To cover rent, the whole family worked as security and janitorial staff for the tire plant. Jim learned to do impressions and comedy at an early age to cheer up his family, mainly his dad during these tough times. His relationship with his dad was the basis of his comedy. Sadly, his dad died just as Jim was making it big, less than a year after the release of Ace Ventura. So Liar Liar is probably a very personal film for Carrey. His portrayal of a dad who is imperfect, yet will do anything for his son looks like a tribute to his own father.
Christ, is all that true? I guess that's why so much of his comedy straddles the line between living cartoon and mental breakdown. It's also really great to see working class actors make it big. Not enough can today and they have so many valuable experiences to share that the Oxbridge/Ivy League set just can't.
I tear up every time he says "I'm a bad father..." His face of realization is just so convincing. This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood and it still holds up today.

The best part of this movie to me is character portrayal as real humans. At the end, Jerry has had huge character development. He too was lying to himself, pretending to be this optimistic and happy guy when he was really just coming across overly naive and obnoxious to everyone around him. Hi Vkunia ! Loved your reaction to this fun family comedy. That said, if you want to see the best comedy ever made that revolves around a divorce, you had to go for Mrs Doubtfire, with Robin Williams. I made a quick search and it seemed you haven't reacted to it yet (or maybe you've already seen it ?). I'm pretty sure it will won a patreon pool quite easily
I love many scenes in this movie, the humor is off the charts. I recall the scene at the impound “You scratched my car!!”, ‘Where?’, “right there.” ‘Oh that, that was already there.’ “You liar, you know what I’m going to do about this?” `’What?’ “Nothing, because if I take you to small claims court it will just drain 8 hours out of my day and you probably won’t even show up. And even if I got the judgement you’d just stick me anyway. So what I’m going to do is piss and moan like an impotent jerk, bend over and take it up the tail pipe!” ‘You’ve been here before haven’t you?’
3:05 "She's a _wonderful_ assistant. Wow." Yeah. Reede's focused a little _too_ much, I think, at least toward the beginning, on making _partner_ in the firm instead of appreciating his assistant and his son.
Great reaction. My favourite quote (it didn't make it to the edit): Judge: "One more word out of you, Mr. Reede, and will hold you in contempt." Reede: "I hold MYSELF in contempt! Why should you be any different?!"
I wrote my own plot for a sequel to this movie if it were ever to get made; this is what I came up with.. In "Liar Liar Pants on Fire," our protagonist, a sleazy car salesman named Max Reede, the son of Fletcher Reede from the first film, finds himself cursed by a gypsy he wronged. The gypsy casts a spell on Max, forcing him to only tell the truth for one day or risk having his pants catch on fire. The movie opens with Max’s pants starting to smoke suddenly in the middle of a sales pitch, but only he can see it. Hilarity ensues as Max struggles to keep his pants from going up in flames while telling the truth about the cars he’s trying to sell. Customers are stunned by his honesty and refuse to do business with him. Max must navigate through his day, trying to undo the curse and prevent his pants from catching fire. He visits a priest, a psychic, and even a fire marshal, but nothing seems to work. As the day goes on, Max’s honest confessions about his past misdeeds only make matters worse. In the end, Max learns the value of honesty and makes amends with the gypsy who cursed him. The movie closes with Max finally breaking the curse, just in time to save his pants and his job. With newfound honesty, Max finds success and happiness in his career and personal life. Throughout the film, "Liar Liar Pants on Fire" delivers non-stop laughs, witty one-liners, and a message about the importance of honesty.
This was the first DVD I ever watched! On my Dad's first generation DVDROM on his PC. I had to restart the movie every 10 minutes because it would lag out due to the PC not being strong enough to handle it . It was still the coolest shit in the world to watch a MOVIE on a DISC on a computer! Thanks for unlocking this core memory for me.
I LOVE your intro music! Do you listen to jazz? As funny as this movie is, and as well as it showcases Jim's comic talents, (the outtakes over the credits ALONE are worth the price of admission) it also shows just how GOOD he can be in dramatic roles. "I hold MYSELF in contempt, why should YOU be any different?" was so fantastically delivered, you could really feel his pain in that moment.
16:50 Vkunia: "There's no way that man is a pool boy I just want to say that." Me: "I don't see why not, he cleaned that lady's pool, alright" --- and I am sorry *not sorry* that I made that joke.
10:17-10:20 I reacted the same way when I ran into my ex at the mall. It warmed my heart when I heard some random guy say, "He did that thing from the Jim Carrey movie!"
You are such a pure soul. He you are watching him pull off all this humor and Aaron lot of it pretty raunchy, and finding morals and blessings in it. Loved the reaction.
I still remember when this came out on home video watching this with my mom who just recently divorced my father who was a lawyer and who had a second hidden relationship for a couple years before she found out. I was 10 but it was as awkward as you can imagine it was. I still have that vivid memory of hearing my mother say "yup, thats your father right there."
You mentioned the mechanical rhino from Ace Ventura 2. That movie was filmed in South Carolina while I lived there. Much of it was filmed at the General Dynamics plant I had worked for from '90 to '94, after it was used for Die Hard 3. The bat cave used part of the storm sewer from DH3.
One thing I really appreciate about this movie is that Jerry is actually a really good guy. Too many movies would fall into the temptation of making him an asshole, but I like the fact that he would've been a very good and stable male figure for the household. But the love is just not reciprocated. But because Jerry is such a good guy, we shouldn't feel too bad for him, because his happiness will come. But I hate watching a movie and feeling patronized, like "yeah, we get it...we're supposed to root for this guy and not the other". Audiences appreciate being trusted to understand what's happening. Don't just feed us Gerber...it's insulting. I actually think the movie would be better if Jerry was actually the right fit for Audrey, and had a great relationship with Max, and Fletcher's arc didn't end with him getting back with his ex. That way, it could focus more on the fact that it was all about Fletcher and Max. And we could end with a scene of Max's next birthday where Fletcher and Jerry are actually friends, and Jerry, Audrey, and Max live close to Fletcher, and so we get the final idea of "divorce can be amicable and friendly", and that would focus more on the father/son relationship of Fletcher and Max. I feel like the parents getting back together shifted focus away from what really mattered for this story.
@@mitchhamilton64 Oh, absolutely. Adam Sandler isn't a bad actor...he just doesn't care about making good content. So he'll make a shit movie when he sees those dollar signs.
@@mitchhamilton64 But check this out. What if Audrey and Jerry end up together, and Fletcher and Jerry coach Max's little league team together. I think that's a better movie.
It's like Ant man in that our protagonist is a loving but unreliable Dad. And his ex and daughter have really landed on their feet by finding a great husband and Dad who the protagonist learns to appreciate and even becomes good friends with.
22:16 "That's very sweet of- That was _very,_ very sweet... of him." Yeah. Consider how rare are movies in which the wife's current partner and her ex have such a _cordial_ relationship. In this way, Max is quite lucky. There's a stretch in the movie where it's like he's got three parents.
Well I mean he kind of did have 3 parents even though Jerry wasn’t fully integrated in his life although I like how they didn’t just make Jerry completely unlikable solely because he was Audrey’s new boyfriend, it was refreshing to see him just as a normal and even good man
I've said it once and I will say it always "All good comedies have heart to them" This one has such a good balance of the heart and comedy. I still love his zany roles like Ace Ventura or his dramatic roles like The Number 23.....but this movie ia my personal Jim Carrey movie.....maybe tied with The Truman Show. I have seen it sooo many times over the years and its still so funny and heartfelt. I wish I could remember the kid actors name as he is amazing in this role.
i can't believe i only just found this channel! how many people know jim made a cameo of his fire marshal character from SNL at the end when they're standing on the runway together, if you look in the crowd in the back you can see him and the people around him are smiling and trying not to laugh :P he cameo'd his own movie :)
There used be a wrestler called Kill Kowalski on Stampede Wrestling (Back in the 60s), whose finishing move was always 'The Claw'. He'd basically use his hand (aka claw) to grab his opponent's abdominal muscles and squeeze him into submission.
Jim carrey was made for this role. Great reaction video. Did you know that Jim made a cameo in this movie as his character fire Marshal Bill at the airport scene. Love your videos, keep up the great work.
> I wish all politicians could only tell the truth as long as they were in office voted in or appointed. > Part of questioning of Jim Carry's witness and objecting to himself reminded me of the Amber H & JD trial. > You know Jerry was in the Princess Bride. > The bloopers are just whatever they decided not to put into the film.
Glad you enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed seeing how happy it made you and all your laughing. Gotta do some of those movies sometimes. You heart wrenching dramas are good too but sometimes a feel good movie is needed. Great Video. Keep up the good work and keep em coming.
If you notice near the end before the EMTs take away Fletcher on a gurney, look in the crowd for a firefighter with sunglasses. That's Jim Carrey as Fire Marshal Bill Burns-his character from In Living Color.
Best thing about the bloopers in Jim Carrey movies is, most of them are basically just "which of these takes should we implement" 🤣 I hijacked my late dad to the movies to see one of his movies. He ended up buying all of his movies on DVD 😄
One of my absolute favorite movies, and your reaction was so wholesome One thing that amazes me is that, in this sequel-happy era of filmmaking, how was there never a second one called Liar Liar: Pants on Fire?
Working with Jom back in the day must've been so entertaining and goofy, i imagine the same must've been with Robin Williams, such amazingly funny n charismatic guys.
20:28 Vkunia: "Oh my gosh oh my gosh is he in the baggage? HE IS! How does he always find ways to fit himself in weird places? First, Mechanical Rhino now a bag." Me: 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
“That was a weird response“. The response in the court room when he said “ding ding ding what do we have for her Johnny” , is a nod to old-school game shows and game show host. When somebody would win a prize, they would ring a bell and they would say what do we got for Johnny so it’s a response to a very stupid question.
One of my absolute favorite movies and you seem to "get" this movie the same way I do, on a level different from other reactors. 13:08 Oh, come on, Fletcher. What made you so unwilling to give this woman a raise when she asked for it? I mean you _might_ be able to find a better assistant, but that's the kind of task _she_ would take on. She's that good.

Wow."
Yeah. Reede's focused a little _too_ much, I think, at least toward the beginning, on making _partner_ in the firm instead of appreciating his assistant and his son.
Great reaction.
My favourite quote (it didn't make it to the edit):
Judge: "One more word out of you, Mr. Reede, and will hold you in contempt."
Reede: "I hold MYSELF in contempt!
I love that he beats himself up, then when asked to describe who did, he describes himself
,,My, Myself and Irene" is also great(with Jim Carry)
I saw this movie when i was 4 cuz my dad didnt think it would be that bad😬
@@swagwolfgang My condolences xd
Oh yes please.. my favorite after the Ace Ventura movies.
Is it, though?
@@berumoddo4036 Yes… Me, Myself and Irene was Very underrated! It’s a crime how much that movie flew under the radar
7:37 His response was a reference to the '70s and '80s game shows where the host would ask the announcer (often named Johnny) what the contestant won.
Jim: YOUR HONOR I OBJECT CUZ ITS DEVASTATING TO MY CASE!!!
Judge: OVERRULED!
Jim: GOOD CALL!!! 😬
Had me dying!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol true
This was the first DVD I ever watched! On my Dad's first generation DVDROM on his PC. I had to restart the movie every 10 minutes because it would lag out due to the PC not being strong enough to handle it . It was still the coolest shit in the world to watch a MOVIE on a DISC on a computer! Thanks for unlocking this core memory for me.
"I'M KICKING MY ASS, DO YOU MIND??" Is ny favorite libe delivery ever 😂😂😂
I LOVE your intro music! Do you listen to jazz?
As funny as this movie is, and as well as it showcases Jim's comic talents, (the outtakes over the credits ALONE are worth the price of admission) it also shows just how GOOD he can be in dramatic roles. "I hold MYSELF in contempt, why should YOU be any different?" was so fantastically delivered, you could really feel his pain in that moment.
“Come meet Vanilla Ice’s doppelgänger”😂😂😂 I don’t think I can ever unsee that whenever I watch this movie again! 😊
16:50 Vkunia: "There's no way that man is a pool boy I just want to say that."
Me: "I don't see why not, he cleaned that lady's pool, alright" --- and I am sorry *not sorry* that I made that joke.
10:17-10:20 I reacted the same way when I ran into my ex at the mall. It warmed my heart when I heard some random guy say, "He did that thing from the Jim Carrey movie!"
Remember seeing this in the cinema. We laughed our asses off. 😂😂😂😂😂
Gained a new subscriber! I really enjoyed your reaction AND whoever’s editing your videos did a great job!
Seconded!
It's like Ant man in that our protagonist is a loving but unreliable Dad. And his ex and daughter have really landed on their feet by finding a great husband and Dad who the protagonist learns to appreciate and even becomes good friends with.
@@chriskelly3481 Now that you point it out, yeah...it probably is. I hadn't thought about it consciously, but that's probably where I got that idea.
22:16 "That's very sweet of- That was _very,_ very sweet... of him."
Yeah. Consider how rare are movies in which the wife's current partner and her ex have such a _cordial_ relationship. In this way, Max is quite lucky. There's a stretch in the movie where it's like he's got three parents.
Well I mean he kind of did have 3 parents even though Jerry wasn’t fully integrated in his life although I like how they didn’t just make Jerry completely unlikable solely because he was Audrey’s new boyfriend, it was refreshing to see him just as a normal and even good man
Your expression when Jerry starts doing the "claw" thing. Borderline cute
Princess V is Never borderline cute. She is completely cute and adorable.
I've said it once and I will say it always "All good comedies have heart to them"
This one has such a good balance of the heart and comedy.
(Slaps hand in time)"Bad baby! Bad baby!" XD
"He's badgering the witness!"
"It's his witness!"
i can't believe i only just found this channel! how many people know jim made a cameo of his fire marshal character from SNL at the end when they're standing on the runway together, if you look in the crowd in the back you can see him and the people around him are smiling and trying not to laugh :P he cameo'd his own movie :)
He was rejected by SNL, it was in living color
@@SergioArellano-yd7ik you are correct. not sure why i said SNL i think i've been watching too much stuff about it recently lol
The "overactor" blooper is my favorite one.
You are so cool, V! I really enjoy your reactions. Thank you for your channel. I can't wait for your next one.
There used be a wrestler called Kill Kowalski on Stampede Wrestling (Back in the 60s), whose finishing move was always 'The Claw'. He'd basically use his hand (aka claw) to grab his opponent's abdominal muscles and squeeze him into submission.
I thought it was Killer Kowalski.
Of All the Carey Iconic Pieces This has ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE
12:07 - "That's just something ugly people say."
VK: "That's not true :("
He can't tell a lie, Vicky!
Loved that you reacted to this! One of my favorite movies of all time :D
This and Bruce Almighty are my favorite films of his. Such a hilarious guy
15:35 VKunia: "What the heck? Stop! What is he doing?"
Me: "His kicking _his_ ass, d'you mind?"
Old Jim Carrey is back with the Sonic Movies. He's hilarious.
If you notice near the end before the EMTs take away Fletcher on a gurney, look in the crowd for a firefighter with sunglasses. That's Jim Carrey as Fire Marshal Bill Burns-his character from In Living Color.
04:30 VKunia: "He is almost too enthusiastic."
Me: "Yeah, he can be a little... Mr. Magoo!"
Best thing about the bloopers in Jim Carrey movies is, most of them are basically just "which of these takes should we implement" 🤣 I hijacked my late dad to the movies to see one of his movies. He ended up buying all of his movies on DVD 😄
I love your reaction to this! So glad you showed your reaction to the bloopers too! Hello from Texas!
One of my absolute favorite movies, and your reaction was so wholesome
One thing that amazes me is that, in this sequel-happy era of filmmaking, how was there never a second one called Liar Liar: Pants on Fire?
Working with Jom back in the day must've been so entertaining and goofy, i imagine the same must've been with Robin Williams, such amazingly funny n charismatic guys.
20:28 Vkunia: "Oh my gosh oh my gosh is he in the baggage? HE IS! How does he always find ways to fit himself in weird places?
First, Mechanical Rhino now a bag."
Me: 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Oof. Jennifer Tilly is so 🔥 in Liar Liar 🥵. 1996 (Bound) to 1998 (Bride of Chucky) is peak Tilly, but she's always a treat.
Write it! WRITE IT OR I'LL BREAK IT OFF!!!
Reminds me off that Crab that rips his own broken claw off lmao
I love the Fire Marshal Bill cameo at the end of the airport scene!
Jim's honorary degree speech is funny yet profoundly inspirational, it's a must watch, full version.
Ah, it was a 'commencement address' … it's here: th-cam.com/video/V80-gPkpH6M/w-d-xo.html
I think we're soulmates. :) I think this is the kind of movie Jim's talent is suited for, more than something like Ace Ventura or Dumb and Dumber. The Mask is another one of those that fit him well. Loved your reaction!
This is TH-cam not tinder dude
The Rachel haircut from Friends was very popular in the 90s. Give it a shot!
Fantastic reaction! 😊
This is one of my all-all-time favorite Jim Carrey movies.
Two other hilarious Jim Craig movies that I recommend if you haven't seen them yet are "Dumb and Dumber" and "The Mask".
Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊
Who is Jim Craig?
“You wanna play hardball… I’m game”
“yOu WaNnA pLaY hArDbALl… i’M gAmE”
😂😂😂😂😂
Jim Carrey at his best "The pen is Blue, the pen is blue" I lost it rolling on floor with laughter Liar Liar is one my favorite films of Jim Carrey
“I’m Jose Canseco!”
Oh, that definitely is the wrong role model. 😂
13:08 Oh, come on, Fletcher. What made you so unwilling to give this woman a raise when she asked for it? I mean you _might_ be able to find a better assistant, but that's the kind of task _she_ would take on. She's that good.
Yeah, that's just being cheap. And that's how you lose talent and experience!
I don't know how his assistant didn't think he was on drugs after the whole pen is blue scene.
Your 'mama jugs' is THE BEST!!!!! I think when I first watched, That was the point I laughed beyond normal.
This was one of the first VHS movies I bought lol. I still watch it all the time. My dad and I would always do "the claw!" to each other lol. The outtakes are one of my fav. "A goose!" lmao.
