    This is awesome! Whenever I'm down in Vietnam, I get stared at too and they never look away, even when I'm locked eye to eye with them, for a good 5 minutes, they're still staring. Hahah

    Hi Charly, most of those stares are out of curiosity and you were holding a camera and talking to it, so it naturally draws attention... just ignore it.

    • @zinknot

    • @omgoppar5777
      @omgoppar5777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      dave jones No. In Vietnam, $3.60 is pretty expensive. 80,000 dong is about $3.60. It all depends on what you buy. If you buy a small toy that is 20,000 dong its considered cheap. But if its a big bowl of pho for 20,000 dong that would be expensive.

    • @AnNguyen-pr4ud
      @AnNguyen-pr4ud 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BringBackForeheadHoseokBigshit I actually could not find any where sell Pho for 20.000 Dong, it's almost 50.000 Dong (~2$) or more in Ho Chi Minh city and it's still cheap.

    • @AnNguyen-pr4ud
      @AnNguyen-pr4ud 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Because we produce a lot of rice domesticly, therefore it's cheap. Other country has to import the rice so it's more expensive :D

    I went to a department store similar to a Wal-mart or Target at the Vivocity mall. They zip-tied the zippers on my backpack. I thought it was pretty funny. Btw, I also get a few stares in public places when I speak to my cousins in Vietnamese. I don't "look" Vietnamese to the people there and they usually are impressed by the "foreign guy" who can speak fluent Vietnamese lol. Great vid Charly!

      They wrapped the bags to avoid pickpockets.

    • @nga88nguyen
      @nga88nguyen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normaly, you would carry a small purse. With big bags, you can have it keep in the lockers. This super market is a big one (for Vietnamese, maybe it normal size in the US) so there're not enough security camera, that why they have to do this.

    • @toBe8ere
      @toBe8ere 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nga Nguyễn ohhh i was wondering why they had to bag them, even if it was to stop pickpockets. but if they don't have the security to cover the entire store and/or the parking lot, it makes sense. here in the US , even in stores with their own security cameras including in the parking lot, the store owners, the cashiers or employees are usually told to watch people in the stores.

      Troy Nguyen I've seen your comments and as a black woman myself, I actually agree with you. I'm a fan of Charlys but that does not mean the truth can't be said. If if she could get a non black man, watch how fast she'll switch. Never take a black lesbian seriously. Look at how many black so called "lesbians" come up pregnant. Blacks in America live in a la la land and don't want the world to say how they feel about them.

      lol even dark skinned vietnamese get stared + it rare nowday to find black skins vietnamese ( like really black ) cause most of them were move to the US after the 90s ( they are mix black with vietnamese but i think there few left cause in some of the photo about the army we found one really black guy so maybe he son of a black vietnamese that didnt go to america after 90 i think ) + there will allway be stares cause black is rare in vietnam and it not racist stare or anything ... you guy just alien for many vietnamese :) not for me cause i seen alot of black soccer player eating at my mom restaurant and they are really nice due that allway gift us ticket to watch they play football :)

    Hi there, Charly, what a lovely lovely video, As I travel alot myself, I just love this video to see what the supermarkets are like and also being vegetarian its so useful and so interesting to see what vegetarian foods are available in Vietnam. Im from London and Being a woman of Colour myself, and having travelled to parts of the world where they dont see many people of other Ethnicities, like myself, even though Im mixed race with very fair light Yellow/Brown skin, I always get an awful lot of stares where ever I travel too!! Its more that most people are so curious as to where Im from!! As they look at my dress sense, which is Chic European with a strong English Accent, that just Baffles them even more!!!! nI nearly All my encounters when travelling, I always find all peoples very warm and friendly and very happy that you are visiting their country! I cant wait to visit Vietnam! Thanks lovely Videos! Karen, London x

    I get stares even in the States and here in Germany. You are fortunate you get stares in only some countries. The only place I never got stares was in London, the only place, and I've traveled all around North American and Europe. It is so frustrating. Also, while they were definitely staring at you, they were also curious about the camera, and some people just did quick glances and moved on with their lives lol. However, I understand how you feel. I am surprised no one has tried to touch my hair as I have dreadlocks. I hope that never happens. They will see my wrath LOL.

    • @chiaraippoliti
      @chiaraippoliti 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Germany, the people at the supermarket pick up the bread with their hands, too. I can't stand it. There are bread scissors and gloves all around the bread, and they still pick it up with their dirty hands. I now have to buy the bread at a fresh bakery or in a bag.

  • @browndelta1913

    hahahaha....yes, its a stare, not a glance. It's a huge difference! I know because I was in Vietnam 2 years ago and I was by myself visiting. I'm 5'9 and a black woman so I got many stares, "glances"....hahaha. People also asked to take a picture with me. I was like....oh no, I'm not Oprah....hahahaha. But I understood, I wasn't the norm there. Although I enjoyed my travel to Vietnam, it was also my least favorite. Many people tried to cheat me and over charge me. Lucky for me, I knew my money well and did plenty of research. Very important when traveling to a different country. Anyhow, enjoy!

    Hi, have enjoyed watching your videos on occasion. I served in Long An and Kien Hoa in the late 60s. I had a female friend that I have wondered about for almost 50 years. We had a special friendship. I have refrained from seriously thoughts of trying reach out to her. My concern has been that I might be stirring up harmful or negative recollections from the war era. On the other hand, if she were doing poorly, I would like to help her....if I could.
    Would you please share any perspectives you may have, as to how Vietnamese woman are viewed today, who may have been friends with a GI 50 years ago. One Vietnamese woman I asked suggested any such effort might embarrass or harm her or her family. She was not a hooch girl, a butterfly girl or a cherry girl. We were friends, I visited her home and met her family. Do you know if there are any mechanisms in existence today for ex-GIs to locate friends from the Vietnam War Era?
    Thanks,
    Preston

    Wow, what market is that? I dont live in Hanoi Vietnam but Im in Ho Chi Minh City. Just curious. I never been to a super market where they had to bag my backpack or anything. Usually I always have a backpack from walking back home from school since I always stop by and buy some snacks or things my stepmother needed. I just casually walk in and the security guards wave to me like they do to everyone else. Pretty interesting. And I guess the reasons for the stares is because Vietnamese are not use to seeing black people and you're also holding a camera. Im Vietnamese and tbh I would stare too. I use to live in Louisiana so I saw a lot of different races but I guess in Vietnam its a rare thing and I dont usually see that in Vietnam, aha.

    You have to put your bag away :O I have never heard of that done anywhere before, but I do see why it would be good. So that people are not able to steal that easily. I wonder if stealing is a big problem there. Anyway, Vietnam looks like the country I would enjoy a lot. Noodle dishes are my favorite. I need to try jasmine(hope I wrote this correctly) rice. I am really curious how that differs from regular rice. The supermarket itself do not really look different from those we have here in Estonia. It just looks a lot more bigger and wider variety of different foods. We have those vegetable weighing stations here as well and we don`t use gloves either in bread stations, well the breads are not that big either :P

    Charly....In Italy they have big stores like that they seal your bags in plastic before you can enter. When ever I would go to them I would carry a little pouch purse. That way I would get stopped. In your video I saw a lady with a pouch a little bigger than mine and it was wrapped. They are serious there....LOL

    Just out of curiosity, I kind of want to know if you ever considered China. Despite all of the bad stuff about China, I kind of want to try it out there. My dad lives there with my family, so I am curious about it (and I'm pretty close now living in South Korea). I don't know if I'm crazy to even consider it, so I want to know if anyone else does.

      I thought about it, but for me it would be in the bigger cities where the better English jobs are. All of the cities have the worst air quality in world, so I decided against it.

      Some of them yes but I would bet that the majority are just curious. I get a lot of stares when I'm not vlogging too. I think today I noticed it even more because we were in a spot with more people hence more stares. :)

    • @whyblue28
      @whyblue28 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      People in Vietnam also stare if you just look a bit "different" from others. I'm Vietnamese too, born and raised there for 16 years, but every time I come back to visit from America, I also get the stares :)), it's not because I dress strangely or anything, they say I have "American smell" lolz, and they are quite fond of pp coming from other countries.. but you will get used to it, it's not totally a bad thing, they are just curious, and they will still keep staring even though you meet their eyes hahha

    vegetarian soy sauce? I dont get it. umm, it's made with soy beans, it's vegetarian by nature. that's like saying, hey look, a vegetarian carrot. However, soy sauce is made by fermenting soy beans, which requires yeast or bacteria. Last time checked, both yeast and bacteria are living organisms so i dont know if soy sauce is vegetarian per se, but is accepted as so in vegetarian diets.

    • @charlycheer
      @charlycheer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it might be either marketing or maybe some soy sauces have a little fish or anchovy sauce. I also encountered vegetarian soy sauce in New York.

      I think it's some weird belief, my gf mother is a vegetarian. she wont eat garlic because most chinese consider garlic to not to be vegetarian.. apparently, a long time ago, monks were massacre on a garlic farm and their blood soaked into the soil, so now she and other believe garlic is contaminated with the blood and cant be used in vegetarian cooking. go figure.

    • @charlycheer
      @charlycheer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah! I've heard of restaurants that are vegetarian and don't use garlic (and possibly onions not sure)...I think it does have to do with monks from what I remember. I need to research this because it would be an informational and interesting video.

    I didn't think they were staring much as because you are a foreigner, but probably because you were walking and talking to a big camera haha. It's okay. The same thing happens to me when I go back home to my own country. If they see you vlogging and taking photos they'll either yell at you, hide, politely ask you not to, or approach you and make you delete any photos you have of them. It's really weird but kinda funny.

    i wonder in which area that supermarket is, coz the bag thing is also a shock to me (im vietnamese living in Saigon). And the reason people stare at you is that we dont get to see many black women here, esp walking with a camera, so it'd be a bit uncomfortable to be stared at.

    • @ChristopherSobieniak
      @ChristopherSobieniak 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure it is a surprise to those who haven't seen someone like her before, of course that is common when you have a homogeneous society opening up like that. I suppose some stores implement that bag thing for security, it makes sense to me, though I'd probably leave me up there as long as they tag it properly.

    Would it be worth it for you too take a cab home instead of the bus?

    • @charlycheer
      @charlycheer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No the ride back wasn't so bad even with all our stuff (and so much cheaper than a taxi would be). The bus is right across the street of the supermarket and the walk home from the last stop we get off isn't too far from our place. We prefer not to have to worry if the taxi driver is driving us in circles so we prefer the bus.
