I just had a fresh start a couple weeks ago from one of the lowest points I’ve had in my life. I struggled to find a job and stayed inside for months on end, eating garbage food just desperately trying to find a job. Finally I got one for a dream job across the country and I thought I was gonna be excited but when the moment came I wasn’t. I was only feeling uncertainty, sadness, and anxiety. I knew I was leaving my friends and family behind to go somewhere I’ve never been where I knew no one. My family drove 15 hours across the country with me to help me move into my apartment for my dream job and I almost cried saying goodbye. They left and I collapsed into my bed for an hour and did nothing but stare at the ceiling wondering if I made the right decision. And then, just like Matt said, as soon as these negative emotions of uncertainty and fear came is as quickly as it left. I joined a gym and started working out again, picked up meditation and yoga again, started eating well again, started getting good sleep, going outside everyday and feeling the fresh air and the sun and enjoying life again. It’s crazy to think where I was two months ago to where I am now. There’s a lot of power behind a fresh start. Maybe no one cares but I figured I’d share this. I don’t know if Matt will see this, but I really relate to this video
What great info…thank you!!! You just brought some light and hope to a mum , close in her 40, with 3 small kids…motherhood made me feel like i’ve lost all sense of who I am and what I would like to do!!! Still struglling and searching for answers!
Literally sometimes moving 10 miles down the street to a nicer apartment does this!! I moved to a nicer apartment with 10 miles of greenway to walk ive worked out 2 weeks in a row im much happier and im literally in the same town... I will admit its the nicer part of town and it is a higher socio economic class of people.... But its actually motivating to be around!! My dog is happier.... I have a beautiful view of the forrest with birds chirping.. Its crazy. I knew I was depressed in my old place. However I didn't realize how depressed I was until after the first week in the new space. Its literally a different world over here.
I just got a fresh start from a very bad time in my life. A lot of things happened but the big one was that we were going to be homeless. With an absolute miracle we found a great new place in an awesome new area. Everything already seems better to me. I'm waking up earlier, more active, etc etc. And finally happy again :)
Yes to this! Thinking about all the awesome changes I made in my life after being dumped traumatically almost makes me pine for those days. Almost. ; - )
It is always good to look if you are in a bad place so we can move.

I've just had another fresh start two months ago. I moved to a country on the other side of the world, which additionally helped me let go of my attachments. It is a completely blank slate, where all of my habits and behaviors can be rediscovered. All of the thoughts and ideas I had before feel much easier to achieve now. All the personalities I was curious about developing feel much more accessible now. The uncertainty around big changes is very scary. As you say in the video, as soon as you take in the new world you have travelled to, the excitement and motivation naturally starts forming. The negatives get erased from your page until there is a blank canvas in front of you that you can paint in any way you want. Love the way you see and and investigate life Matt. I do it very similarly. It's always interesting to see how another person got to a similar conclusion as I have. 😊
Well personally I found out about holistic self improvement and it really changed my life. It felt like I deleted my past and started over again, life is so good now
Last Spring was really a fresh start for me. What made it possible to start building habits that last was a combination of two things: Changing of how I identify myself and setting small, very realistic goals which won't make me loathe the activity. First I started identifying as a jogger. So I went to have a jog once a week. Soon after that got going, I started to identify as an early sleeper. Now I'm getting 8 hours of sleep every night instead of 6-7 hours. Once these habits were going fine I started to identify as a gym goer starting once a week. Now I go to jog or cycling 3 times a week, and to gym 1-2 times a week. It's been very much fine as I'm not straining myself too much but just the right amount of challenge. When I fail at any of these goals, no matter. An early sleeper goes sleeping early the next night. A jogger goes for a jog the next week. A gym goer does the same with the gym. With all these identity changes I've always returned to the good habits if something has gone wrong. I'm really thankful that I've finally found the process that has helped me to build the good habits that I've always wanted.
Handed in my resignation after a crazy two years in a top role to begin my own interior consulting firm. It’s liberating to say the least, staying strong and hopeful for the challenges ahead. Thanks Matt!

Obsession on physical fitness, though, generally tends to be the cheapest 'change.' It usually indicates you're in a rut with nothing going on. I always got into the best shape of my life when I was depressed: broken up with somebody, in between jobs, rudderless and seeking some direction. And in my city, Los Angeles, the people who are in the most precarious life positions are generally health and fitness professionals.
SO SO TRUE - I have been there. I did feel like I was changing. Then it didn't after years of being super fit and obsessed - I didn't care for external validation visually (also I have a partner already), I didn't care for being able to climb a rock if I needed to - in a city....? I even got obsessed with food which was SO SO entirely DULL for my own brain. Is this all there is, I thought after 10 years of being athletic.
i agree man a lot of people have their dream body but with their other life goals on hold (or worse they dont even have any other life goals). me personally i gotta prioritize fitness and financial goals
I feel like this ignores how much exercise helps your health mentally and physically though. Like yes, relying on physical changes in an aesthetic sense will be short lived. But the impact on your ability to function physically and things like depression and anxiety can't be overstated
I admire you greatly for taking a jump like that...I've always found it a lot easier to make changes with someone else. Like many, the last two years have been so tough, the isolation has been, I can't even put it into words...i just don't know how to start again, I just want to feel safe first and foremost....I feel like I've lost connection with so many people, including myself...big loves to everyone else who's struggling out there xx
I feel the only fresh start you can truly ever give yourself, since, If you are the majority who spend all day at home, is, not even so much so as going out more, but just disconnecting everything that makes sound or is a screen and really realize, that life is so silent, and still, and the world moves without you or not.

I like the power of small steps. One doesn't notice them. However, when you turn back, let's say, a year - sooooo many things have changed. Along those lines, I've learned to take into account things that shift, big time, on a much larger scale of things, entirely, again, shifting sooooo many things both, within you and around you. 49. Started taking those little steps, day-in&day-out 9 years ago. Everything changed! And I'm just keeping the pace !♥️

It’s all about your mindset. I move so much the idea of a fresh start sounds like torture. I just what to stay somewhere long enough that my eye doctor knows me.
I actually just had a fresh start on a smaller scale. Went on a trip that helped me reset my mindset, gave me space to reflect. And now I’m working hard to hold onto that momentum.
I recently started fresh in a new city and new career, and it made such a difference. The trauma therapy had been working (slowly), but making that outer change acted like a catalyst. It cemented the sense that "that was then and this is now" for me: choosing to do that gave me a sense of agency, and I've been having emotionally corrective experiences (I even have hope for the future, something I haven't felt in about a decade). There are people who misuse "wherever you go there you are" in kind of a shaming way... as if making an external change in my life precludes working on myself, as if I must be looking for a quick fix instead of doing the work. Um, no, I'm looking for a way to support myself in my growth, and that involves moving away from you, boomer. Taking myself into new situations with awareness and all the tools and understanding I have now, isn't a quick fix. (little bit at the start though... there's a honeymoon period where it feels like a quick fix)
I love having a fresh start. New Year's Day is my favorite holiday. I left a company a few years ago, sold almost everything, and did the RV Life thing for a couple of years. It was just what I needed to start a new business and get perspective on what is important to me.
Well, my husband and I are selling all our properties, relocating, and both are changing jobs. Wanted this fresh start to get us moving on some new things. Great video :-)

I totally understand that grass is greener pain. I've also experienced the opposite after the traumatic surprise ending of a very long-term relationship. Even though I suddenly had twice the rent to pay, no built-in buddy, and a seemingly endless suck-load of emotional devastation to process, the Fresh Start Effect plus FREEDOM to make decisions based solely on what *I* wanted to do helped me make some great changes. - I gave up sugar, lost weight, went to therapy, got rid of my storage unit after years, built a table and created an art studio where his desk used to be >; - ), took a music class that led me to a new great friend, traveled internationally by myself to a place he'd never been interested in going, etc., etc. Sometimes the security blanket of love also keeps us stuck in a cozy but much smaller life than we'd otherwise lead. ❤Wishing you well!❤
I'm gonna have a fresh start its 13th Jan 2023 and I am gonna change and I think you too I wanted a pep talk to change and this is the one for you I'm quite young but here is a way to live enjoy every moment big or small be positive don't stress over mistakes take it slow you don't have much time weather your gonna live for 100 years or gonna die at 23 it doesn't matter enjoy every moment to do that you don't need money or stuff you just need a positive mind set and love yourself don't put your hopes into people they might hurt you work but also have fun have a hobby journal but most importantly have fun you can live once so live it the best think that your the most happiest person leave all the stress behind and just have fun and remember imperfections make memories while perfection continuously don't even give satisfaction so right now is your time to change and be a new you I said you be yourself but the best version of yourself may you change intoa beautiful person and live a happy life small tip try to disconnect from phone to connect with yourself and the world
Moved country twice. Both moves had (once you get past all the stress) huge positive impacts on my and my wife's lives. Whatever a "fresh start" means to you, it's worth it!
The fresh start idea makes sense on so many levels but I think people should try to build in momentum AND a fresh start. For example, instead of making new changes at the beginning of the year and failing 80% of the time, why not try out the new habit at the beginning of December, work out the kinks-fall down, pick yourself back up-and roll into the New Year with “some” success? It seems that riding a success train, even if it’s only “moderate”, into the New Year would likely raise the chance of succeeding! Continue to do what works. However, if there was no success, then make a true fresh start knowledge of what things did NOT work!
OMG!! I found this video just in time! I have lived in KY for my entire life. I've had this desire for years to simply leave everything and start over. In 2021 I moved a couple of hours from my home town, yet still in my state. But, in August I BOUGHT A TOWNHOUSE in GA! I am doing a semi-flip on it and will move in October. I'm scared senseless, but I am excited at the same time! At times it doesn't even feel real. It just feels right! This video made me feel a little less petrified. 😂And by the way, I'm 59 years old. I waited a bit late in life to do this, but now it's happening. Thank you for sharing your own story here. It is just what I needed! 😊

I'm all about fresh starts. It's true that New Year's resolutions rarely stick! I was close to dying in 2000. I got a second change. Totally grasped it and have been trying to grow more and more each year since then on so many levels. It's painful but liberating in the same time! Life is amazing for the eyes that can see it!

Currently going through this exact process myself. Been in the same place for a few years now and I’m just fed up with how many resolutions I’ve dropped. So, I’ll m selling a lot of my distractions and moving to either Europe or a different state to get going. I’m excited to see what this fresh start means for me, but it all comes down to what I do and the habits I start when I get there.
I totally felt the doldrum of living in a situation where it feels like you can’t change or escape. I live out of my home state, all my family are out of state as of 2020, I haven’t had much luck finding a job that pays better, I don’t have my own place, and I too feel creatively and intellectually unfulfilled. But the change is scary, what if moving blows up in my face, I struggle with anxiety, depression, and I could go on.
Great video. New starts never easy, can be overwhelming, but necessary for us. I was scared for the longest time to switch careers and one day it all became clear and I did it without a second thought. Now my hair has grown back, so change does help in different ways.

I started bringing in some changes in my life and I feel I am moving in a right direction. Of course, there will be many failures but I feel I have to be prepared for it and keep on doing things which give me purpose and happiness. I am practising flying drones, actively publishing videos on TH-cam and IG, going for walk/running every alternate days, eating home cooked meals,etc,. Thanks for sharing your ideas and practices which have helped you along the way.

I recently moved away from my family/friends, the local community I had grown up and got to know for so many years. I'm now living in a city where I don't know anyone, I have to use Google maps everywhere I go as I don't know the streets as well, and did I mention I don't know anyone. I thought it would be a good chance to get a fresh start but the fresh start never came. One of the reasons is that I'm still working in the same job thanks to remote working. I'm desperately looking now for a new job, that fresh start
I gave up anything people said to me that: Your life is stable. I dont know this word use in your country. But in my country, people always want that. Boring job boring life. I decide to quit that life and start a new life with new job. Harder than I thought. Sometimes I wondered Am I right when do this? But always rewatch and see your video to motivation. I had my "Fresh start moment" and moved right before the pandemic to the most locked down state in the world. Have been waiting around for the fresh start to kick in but it hasn't worked just yet. This is legit exactly what I am going through right now. Starting grad school and decided that this stage of my life will be when I get my life in order. So far it’s really been working.
Change is hard for those who are trying to be perfect, don't beat yourself up when things didn't work as you expected to, maintain the momentum you had. Also, make a plan.

Absolutely agree here and what's missing in this video is how to manage the follow up - the small steps and daily habits that actually help in achieving goals. Setting vague new years resolutions don't work: like 'exercise more' or 'save money'. We know what works is setting small specific goals to achieve the overall goal. Like exercise every Monday and Wednesday or save $100 each month. :) That way a fresh start is the kick-off point but it will only be maintained if your habits also change :) Otherwise a fresh start is just an excuse to run away and those problems or things we want to change will just follow us around.
Fascinating, I've been unknowingly doing the fresh start for Muay Thai every week for 3x a day it's Tuesday, Friday and a random day in the week. Tuesday is the intermediate class which I use, to not only look forward to sparing but gauge how my form and skills are, plus the nighttime classes are stress alleviating because of the beginning time (poor understanding of time causes panic attacks, after a few hours I'm still able to attend with out being late or too late). Wednesday is beginner's class used to adjust form and catch any tells, plus it helps when depression kicks in causing a decline in fitness telling myself "I'm not at the level I should be or was." It's an "easier" class but still intense and the class which people had to earn gloves if they wanted to join (being consist and checking your form), which helps sooth my pride to not shame me from attending. The randome day, is scheduled with my coach 1:1 aka "The Fighting Pastoral". Being able to choose to train or have a discussion really helps when depression hits. There's enough trust where I can be in a dark place and still choose to train as he encourages that I'm still doing my best and not giving up or, that he's in my corner willing to wait and get back to training if a break is needed or tells me the people who are living rent free in my hear are up in the 2nd floor as their shouts getting drowned out by the people in my corner. The last example of being encouraged to continue is he's patient, allows fuck ups then encourages to not give up, when deciding to stop out of fear then turning up the very next day he didn't feel slighted he was proud I showed up. Shout out to Ram, love that guy I'd fight for him. The importance of being able to be proud of having a plan and attempt consistency should never be shamed rather acknowledge difficulty. Next the ability to attending an objective mustn't be undermined, it might be simple one day but the next could cause discouragement, being able to recognize that is wildly hard. To be overwhelmed yet still attempt a specified part of the main objective that's still a challenge with possible not plausable completion, the importence of this attempt is becoming living proof you can complete an objective even though it doesn't make you happy as you might have high standards, pride and guilt getting in the way. For the day you're able to complete your main task, be it you meet high standers or fought to get it done- it's finally finished. If you're upset to not have meet your expectations good, you've learned how to spot what areas need fine tuning, that's self development, improvement and awareness. Now ride out the moment of confidence, try some parfume or cologne on, touch grass, enjoy seeing goofy looking dogs going for a walk or a cat on a leash, let the small things continue and be the joy it makes the day alot better. If you struggle with rembering your able to complete things try holding a pinch in the web between your thumb and index finger for 3secs, now every time you complete something do it again- this creates new neuro net pathways and associates a feeling of empowerment. Hope this helps someone, just like Matt's videos helped during the most uncertain moments of life. From, the ramblings of someone who's attempted more suicides than their age. BTW Matt if you read this, never stop making videos (unless you want to.) You've helped me keep a clear and driven mind when using a homeless shelter and now paying rent, still your videos are helping and continously teaching.

On Sunday I'm about to start a one of the biggest fresh starts of my life as I'm moving to San Francisco for my first real job out of college at Google! Pretty nervous but mostly excited for what's to come. Thanks Matt for putting out this vid at a time I needed it most
Nothing wrong with selling it all and living that digital nomad life though! Living the life of continuous travel has given us a fresh start literally every few weeks! Best decision we ever made, was letting go of all these "things" and having the freedom to travel wherever and whenever we want. I just had a new start at a new job after an emotional few months of my previous company having massive income loss. There were only 4 of us and we were all very close. It feels like grieving in a sense. I'm terrified and have had some of the most uncertain few weeks of my life after coming from a job I adored. I hope my fears can calm down over time.

I am hoping to 'start again' next year. I need to move cities - that's a huge part of it for me. I need to get off social media. I really hope my partner comes with me, I hope he can see the benefit even though it will be scary.
This is crazy. Never reflected on the power of a fresh start. Yet, I always get excited when I get the chance to start fresh on something new. It can be summer holidays, giving me the mental capacity back to catch up on some reading, or maybe just going back to work and getting to see my work projects from a fresh new perspective. Love it. Very privileged video that a lot of people won’t be able to relate to. I don’t understand why the pandemic shook so many people out of their healthy routines it’s not like you can’t go on a walk or a run in your neighborhood. Same as eating poorly, it’s not like the grocery store was closed and your stove doesn’t work. Like the gist but it’s very first world problem based and even above that it’s very upper middle class/upper class
In 2008 I had a friend who had moved her indie rock band to Portland, OR. She started emailing me and telling me that I would love it. At that time I owned a 1891 Victorian home overlooking the Missouri River with 13 rooms near Kansas City. I was very settled in that life. But my two daughters had just become fully independent out in the world and I'd divorced my husband of 25 years two years before that. I decided I didn't want to be the caretaker in the museum of the life I used to live. So, I went into every room in my home and pulled out just the things I loved the most and segregated them into two rooms and locked the door. Then over the course of a long three day weekend I threw open the doors to my house and told people "make me an offer and it's yours". I sold 90% of what I owned without moving or pricing a thing. People were paying me to haul my stuff away. Two weeks later I was packed up and heading west to Portland OR. I'd never even visited the Pacific Northwest before. Never spent a single day in Portland. Moved without a job lined up. I lived with my friend's band for a month before I found a place to live. I found a job the third day I was in Portland. I thought "I'll stay for two years and if I don't like it, I''ll go somewhere else". Well, it's 2022 and I still love the city. It's amazing and holds my heart. That leap into the unknown was one of the best things I ever did. Got rid of my car and bike everywhere. Love my job. Own a tiny condo (386 square feet) in the heart of the city. Cherish the community of friends that I've found here. Life is short. Take chances.

The last point resonated with me because I recently hit 365 days straight of running and everyone kept asking me if I would stop. There was something in the back of my head that was like, why would stop if I don't have to. So I kept it going and I don't regret it. Great video!
Something i love about your channel (and you, i guess) is the flexibility that uou have and the more you gained with the years. You talked about changes and how it affects ofrece habits, how sometimes we dont have the motivation, how we do not have to have something so complicated and overwelming to track habits or task or to start the day.
Getting a fresh start soon. Its a small one by getting a new room on the same house but next year might change my college to try to get better. It feels good.

I struggled to find a job and stayed inside for months on end, eating garbage food just desperately trying to find a job. Finally I got one for a dream job across the country and I thought I was gonna be excited but when the moment came I wasn’t. I was only feeling uncertainty, sadness, and anxiety. I knew I was leaving my friends and family behind to go somewhere I’ve never been where I knew no one. My family drove 15 hours across the country with me to help me move into my apartment for my dream job and I almost cried saying goodbye. They left and I collapsed into my bed for an hour and did nothing but stare at the ceiling wondering if I made the right decision. And then, just like Matt said, as soon as these negative emotions of uncertainty and fear came is as quickly as it left. I joined a gym and started working out again, picked up meditation and yoga again, started eating well again, started getting good sleep, going outside everyday and feeling the fresh air and the sun and enjoying life again. It’s crazy to think where I was two months ago to where I am now. There’s a lot of power behind a fresh start. Maybe no one cares but I figured I’d share this. I don’t know if Matt will see this, but I really relate to this video

Literally sometimes moving 10 miles down the street to a nicer apartment does this!! I moved to a nicer apartment with 10 miles of greenway to walk ive worked out 2 weeks in a row im much happier and im literally in the same town... I will admit its the nicer part of town and it is a higher socio economic class of people.... But its actually motivating to be around!! My dog is happier.... I have a beautiful view of the forrest with birds chirping.. Its crazy. I knew I was depressed in my old place. However I didn't realize how depressed I was until after the first week in the new space. Its literally a different world over here.
I just got a fresh start from a very bad time in my life. A lot of things happened but the big one was that we were going to be homeless. With an absolute miracle we found a great new place in an awesome new area. Everything already seems better to me. I'm waking up earlier, more active, etc etc. And finally happy again :)
Personally, I found motivation from a bad situation and now I’m using it to fuel change 🙏

I've just had another fresh start two months ago.
I moved to a country on the other side of the world, which additionally helped me let go of my attachments. It is a completely blank slate, where all of my habits and behaviors can be rediscovered. All of the thoughts and ideas I had before feel much easier to achieve now. All the personalities I was curious about developing feel much more accessible now.
The uncertainty around big changes is very scary. As you say in the video, as soon as you take in the new world you have travelled to, the excitement and motivation naturally starts forming. The negatives get erased from your page until there is a blank canvas in front of you that you can paint in any way you want.
Love the way you see and and investigate life Matt. I do it very similarly. It's always interesting to see how another person got to a similar conclusion as I have. 😊

Well personally I found out about holistic self improvement and it really changed my life. It felt like I deleted my past and started over again, life is so good now
Last Spring was really a fresh start for me. What made it possible to start building habits that last was a combination of two things: Changing of how I identify myself and setting small, very realistic goals which won't make me loathe the activity. First I started identifying as a jogger. So I went to have a jog once a week. Soon after that got going, I started to identify as an early sleeper. Now I'm getting 8 hours of sleep every night instead of 6-7 hours. Once these habits were going fine I started to identify as a gym goer starting once a week. Now I go to jog or cycling 3 times a week, and to gym 1-2 times a week. It's been very much fine as I'm not straining myself too much but just the right amount of challenge. When I fail at any of these goals, no matter. An early sleeper goes sleeping early the next night. A jogger goes for a jog the next week. A gym goer does the same with the gym. With all these identity changes I've always returned to the good habits if something has gone wrong. I'm really thankful that I've finally found the process that has helped me to build the good habits that I've always wanted.

Obsession on physical fitness, though, generally tends to be the cheapest 'change.' It usually indicates you're in a rut with nothing going on. I always got into the best shape of my life when I was depressed: broken up with somebody, in between jobs, rudderless and seeking some direction. And in my city, Los Angeles, the people who are in the most precarious life positions are generally health and fitness professionals.

SO SO TRUE - I have been there. I did feel like I was changing. Then it didn't after years of being super fit and obsessed - I didn't care for external validation visually (also I have a partner already), I didn't care for being able to climb a rock if I needed to - in a city....? I even got obsessed with food which was SO SO entirely DULL for my own brain. Is this all there is, I thought after 10 years of being athletic.
i agree man a lot of people have their dream body but with their other life goals on hold (or worse they dont even have any other life goals). me personally i gotta prioritize fitness and financial goals
I feel like this ignores how much exercise helps your health mentally and physically though. Like yes, relying on physical changes in an aesthetic sense will be short lived. But the impact on your ability to function physically and things like depression and anxiety can't be overstated

I feel the only fresh start you can truly ever give yourself, since, If you are the majority who spend all day at home, is, not even so much so as going out more, but just disconnecting everything that makes sound or is a screen and really realize, that life is so silent, and still, and the world moves without you or not.

I like the power of small steps. One doesn't notice them. However, when you turn back, let's say, a year - sooooo many things have changed. Along those lines, I've learned to take into account things that shift, big time, on a much larger scale of things, entirely, again, shifting sooooo many things both, within you and around you. 49. Started taking those little steps, day-in&day-out 9 years ago. Everything changed! And I'm just keeping the pace !♥️

It’s all about your mindset. I move so much the idea of a fresh start sounds like torture. I just what to stay somewhere long enough that my eye doctor knows me.
I actually just had a fresh start on a smaller scale. Went on a trip that helped me reset my mindset, gave me space to reflect. And now I’m working hard to hold onto that momentum.
I recently started fresh in a new city and new career, and it made such a difference. The trauma therapy had been working (slowly), but making that outer change acted like a catalyst. It cemented the sense that "that was then and this is now" for me: choosing to do that gave me a sense of agency, and I've been having emotionally corrective experiences (I even have hope for the future, something I haven't felt in about a decade).
There are people who misuse "wherever you go there you are" in kind of a shaming way... as if making an external change in my life precludes working on myself, as if I must be looking for a quick fix instead of doing the work. Um, no, I'm looking for a way to support myself in my growth, and that involves moving away from you, boomer. Taking myself into new situations with awareness and all the tools and understanding I have now, isn't a quick fix. (little bit at the start though... there's a honeymoon period where it feels like a quick fix)
I love having a fresh start. New Year's Day is my favorite holiday. I left a company a few years ago, sold almost everything, and did the RV Life thing for a couple of years. It was just what I needed to start a new business and get perspective on what is important to me.

I totally understand that grass is greener pain. I've also experienced the opposite after the traumatic surprise ending of a very long-term relationship. Even though I suddenly had twice the rent to pay, no built-in buddy, and a seemingly endless suck-load of emotional devastation to process, the Fresh Start Effect plus FREEDOM to make decisions based solely on what *I* wanted to do helped me make some great changes. - I gave up sugar, lost weight, went to therapy, got rid of my storage unit after years, built a table and created an art studio where his desk used to be >; - ), took a music class that led me to a new great friend, traveled internationally by myself to a place he'd never been interested in going, etc., etc.
Sometimes the security blanket of love also keeps us stuck in a cozy but much smaller life than we'd otherwise lead.

Moved country twice. Both moves had (once you get past all the stress) huge positive impacts on my and my wife's lives. Whatever a "fresh start" means to you, it's worth it!
The fresh start idea makes sense on so many levels but I think people should try to build in momentum AND a fresh start. For example, instead of making new changes at the beginning of the year and failing 80% of the time, why not try out the new habit at the beginning of December, work out the kinks-fall down, pick yourself back up-and roll into the New Year with “some” success? It seems that riding a success train, even if it’s only “moderate”, into the New Year would likely raise the chance of succeeding! Continue to do what works. However, if there was no success, then make a true fresh start knowledge of what things did NOT work!
OMG!! I found this video just in time! I have lived in KY for my entire life. I've had this desire for years to simply leave everything and start over. In 2021 I moved a couple of hours from my home town, yet still in my state. But, in August I BOUGHT A TOWNHOUSE in GA! I am doing a semi-flip on it and will move in October. I'm scared senseless, but I am excited at the same time! At times it doesn't even feel real. It just feels right! This video made me feel a little less petrified. 😂And by the way, I'm 59 years old. I waited a bit late in life to do this, but now it's happening. Thank you for sharing your own story here. It is just what I needed! 😊

I'm all about fresh starts. It's true that New Year's resolutions rarely stick! I was close to dying in 2000. I got a second change. Totally grasped it and have been trying to grow more and more each year since then on so many levels. It's painful but liberating in the same time! Life is amazing for the eyes that can see it!

Currently going through this exact process myself. Been in the same place for a few years now and I’m just fed up with how many resolutions I’ve dropped. So, I’ll m selling a lot of my distractions and moving to either Europe or a different state to get going. I’m excited to see what this fresh start means for me, but it all comes down to what I do and the habits I start when I get there.
I totally felt the doldrum of living in a situation where it feels like you can’t change or escape. I live out of my home state, all my family are out of state as of 2020, I haven’t had much luck finding a job that pays better, I don’t have my own place, and I too feel creatively and intellectually unfulfilled. But the change is scary, what if moving blows up in my face, I struggle with anxiety, depression, and I could go on.
Great video. New starts never easy, can be overwhelming, but necessary for us. I was scared for the longest time to switch careers and one day it all became clear and I did it without a second thought. Now my hair has grown back, so change does help in different ways.
I'm about to feel a big fresh start in about 6 months, since I'll be leaving everything I know for something I know nothing about. Thanks for this! I can mentally prepare more effectively now.

I started bringing in some changes in my life and I feel I am moving in a right direction. Of course, there will be many failures but I feel I have to be prepared for it and keep on doing things which give me purpose and happiness. I am practising flying drones, actively publishing videos on TH-cam and IG, going for walk/running every alternate days, eating home cooked meals,etc,. Thanks for sharing your ideas and practices which have helped you along the way.
People usually underestimate the value of those simple, daily practices (like going for walks, home cooked meals) but they do so much for feeling recharged on a consistent basis. Thanks for sharing!

I recently moved away from my family/friends, the local community I had grown up and got to know for so many years. I'm now living in a city where I don't know anyone, I have to use Google maps everywhere I go as I don't know the streets as well, and did I mention I don't know anyone. I thought it would be a good chance to get a fresh start but the fresh start never came. One of the reasons is that I'm still working in the same job thanks to remote working. I'm desperately looking now for a new job, that fresh start
I gave up anything people said to me that: Your life is stable. I dont know this word use in your country. But in my country, people always want that. Boring job boring life. I decide to quit that life and start a new life with new job. Harder than I thought. Sometimes I wondered Am I right when do this? But always rewatch and see your video to motivation. Absolutely agree here and what's missing in this video is how to manage the follow up - the small steps and daily habits that actually help in achieving goals. Setting vague new years resolutions don't work: like 'exercise more' or 'save money'. We know what works is setting small specific goals to achieve the overall goal. Like exercise every Monday and Wednesday or save $100 each month. :) That way a fresh start is the kick-off point but it will only be maintained if your habits also change :) Otherwise a fresh start is just an excuse to run away and those problems or things we want to change will just follow us around.
Fascinating, I've been unknowingly doing the fresh start for Muay Thai every week for 3x a day it's Tuesday, Friday and a random day in the week.
Tuesday is the intermediate class which I use, to not only look forward to sparing but gauge how my form and skills are, plus the nighttime classes are stress alleviating because of the beginning time (poor understanding of time causes panic attacks, after a few hours I'm still able to attend with out being late or too late).
Wednesday is beginner's class used to adjust form and catch any tells, plus it helps when depression kicks in causing a decline in fitness telling myself "I'm not at the level I should be or was." It's an "easier" class but still intense and the class which people had to earn gloves if they wanted to join (being consist and checking your form), which helps sooth my pride to not shame me from attending.
The randome day, is scheduled with my coach 1:1 aka "The Fighting Pastoral". Being able to choose to train or have a discussion really helps when depression hits. There's enough trust where I can be in a dark place and still choose to train as he encourages that I'm still doing my best and not giving up or, that he's in my corner willing to wait and get back to training if a break is needed or tells me the people who are living rent free in my hear are up in the 2nd floor as their shouts getting drowned out by the people in my corner. The last example of being encouraged to continue is he's patient, allows fuck ups then encourages to not give up, when deciding to stop out of fear then turning up the very next day he didn't feel slighted he was proud I showed up.

The importance of being able to be proud of having a plan and attempt consistency should never be shamed rather acknowledge difficulty. Next the ability to attending an objective mustn't be undermined, it might be simple one day but the next could cause discouragement, being able to recognize that is wildly hard. To be overwhelmed yet still attempt a specified part of the main objective that's still a challenge with possible not plausable completion, the importence of this attempt is becoming living proof you can complete an objective even though it doesn't make you happy as you might have high standards, pride and guilt getting in the way. For the day you're able to complete your main task, be it you meet high standers or fought to get it done- it's finally finished. If you're upset to not have meet your expectations good, you've learned how to spot what areas need fine tuning, that's self development, improvement and awareness. Now ride out the moment of confidence, try some parfume or cologne on, touch grass, enjoy seeing goofy looking dogs going for a walk or a cat on a leash, let the small things continue and be the joy it makes the day alot better. If you struggle with rembering your able to complete things try holding a pinch in the web between your thumb and index finger for 3secs, now every time you complete something do it again- this creates new neuro net pathways and associates a feeling of empowerment.
Hope this helps someone, just like Matt's videos helped during the most uncertain moments of life.

Best decision we ever made, was letting go of all these "things" and having the freedom to travel wherever and whenever we want. I just had a new start at a new job after an emotional few months of my previous company having massive income loss. There were only 4 of us and we were all very close. It feels like grieving in a sense. I'm terrified and have had some of the most uncertain few weeks of my life after coming from a job I adored. I hope my fears can calm down over time.

This is crazy. Never reflected on the power of a fresh start. Yet, I always get excited when I get the chance to start fresh on something new. It can be summer holidays, giving me the mental capacity back to catch up on some reading, or maybe just going back to work and getting to see my work projects from a fresh new perspective. Love it.

Very privileged video that a lot of people won’t be able to relate to. I don’t understand why the pandemic shook so many people out of their healthy routines it’s not like you can’t go on a walk or a run in your neighborhood. Same as eating poorly, it’s not like the grocery store was closed and your stove doesn’t work. Like the gist but it’s very first world problem based and even above that it’s very upper middle class/upper class

In 2008 I had a friend who had moved her indie rock band to Portland, OR. She started emailing me and telling me that I would love it. At that time I owned a 1891 Victorian home overlooking the Missouri River with 13 rooms near Kansas City. I was very settled in that life. But my two daughters had just become fully independent out in the world and I'd divorced my husband of 25 years two years before that. I decided I didn't want to be the caretaker in the museum of the life I used to live. So, I went into every room in my home and pulled out just the things I loved the most and segregated them into two rooms and locked the door. Then over the course of a long three day weekend I threw open the doors to my house and told people "make me an offer and it's yours". I sold 90% of what I owned without moving or pricing a thing. People were paying me to haul my stuff away. Two weeks later I was packed up and heading west to Portland OR. I'd never even visited the Pacific Northwest before. Never spent a single day in Portland. Moved without a job lined up. I lived with my friend's band for a month before I found a place to live. I found a job the third day I was in Portland. I thought "I'll stay for two years and if I don't like it, I''ll go somewhere else". Well, it's 2022 and I still love the city. It's amazing and holds my heart. That leap into the unknown was one of the best things I ever did. Got rid of my car and bike everywhere. Love my job. Own a tiny condo (386 square feet) in the heart of the city. Cherish the community of friends that I've found here. Life is short. Take chances.

The last point resonated with me because I recently hit 365 days straight of running and everyone kept asking me if I would stop. There was something in the back of my head that was like, why would stop if I don't have to. So I kept it going and I don't regret it. Great video!
Something i love about your channel (and you, i guess) is the flexibility that uou have and the more you gained with the years.
You talked about changes and how it affects ofrece habits, how sometimes we dont have the motivation, how we do not have to have something so complicated and overwelming to track habits or task or to start the day.
Getting a fresh start soon. Its a small one by getting a new room on the same house but next year might change my college to try to get better. It feels good.
