A few years ago, I went out in my woods to cut firewood & found a hunter sitting about 100 ft inside my property line. He said he had followed a trail from the neighbors where he had permission. I gave him the benefit of doubt because he was on the trail, but he was sitting with his back against a posted sign! I politely asked him to not hunt our land. After that he started sitting on a pile of old hay on the property line...facing onto my property. So I had a buddy that traps mix up some skunk oil and melted wax, and we poured it all over where he sat. Never saw him again lol!

I've actually crossed a fence line before unknowingly once when I was younger while out hunting with my Dad. Someone else had cut the fence line so it was down under the brush. The farmer was great about it and we helped him restring the fence. He didn't know it was down.

This happened to my neighbour - someone cutting the fence to his property so they could go off-roading (and probably hunting as well as it was hunting season)
His cattle found the gap, crossed the road and ended up on my property where someone had also taken down a part of my fence...
A couple of good cow horses helped sort them out.
Thankfully the cattle didn't head east, which would have landed them on a busy highway frequented by large rigs and gravel trucks.

We don't hunt on our neighbors property, but asked the neighbors if the deer runs on their property could we go get it. Everyone says yes because they don't want the deer to die & go to waste. We have 61+ acres. Always good to be a good neighbor.

  • @PopleBackyardFarm
    @PopleBackyardFarm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Country living means you have to have those NO Tresspassing signs. You are so right about that and being reasonable and neighborly as we also need to protect our neighbors etc.. if we see something odd especially. Tresspassers may not realize their is a family living in a house close to where they are hunting - good protection for them as well as the homeowners.

Thank for covering this Daniel. We are also out in the sticks in OK. Several break ins and trespassers. It’s sad that people do it but all we can do is lock 🔒 down the hatches like you said. We only have 6 acres but already have hunters trying to find the deer 🦌 on it.

lots of good points and i like how you came at it from a more passive side. I get annoyed with people threatening everyone. I mean hey, it may get to that point, but i think it's best to start off like you said. Post signs, talk with the neighbors, tell the trespasser he/she is on private property, and then slowly escalate the situation.

  • @tkfarmgoods9508

We tried the signs on our driveway, but just about everyone that I caught Trespassing would say "I Didn't Know the Sign Was for Me" or "But I'm Looking For So and So, That Means the Sign Doesn't Apply To Me, Right?" We Had A Cattle Guard for a while and it didn't even slow them down. It Was So Bad We Had To Put An Automatic Gate and Fence Up Across Our Driveway. We put the gate up first and had people drive and walk around it and still try to say they didn't know they were trespassing. You just gotta do the best that you can, with what you have to work with, and in todays society there's not much to work with. Good Luck Guys and Gals.

I could not agree more with making friends with your neighbors. In WA, I post "no tresspassing signs and the year the sign was posted. I'm in the process of having a 4 stran barbwire fence installed alone a new road that runs along my 13 acres. We have issues of homeless individuals tresspassing, causing fires, trashing the area, dealing drugs and needles. Hunter have not been an issue for the last 7 years. When we first moved into the area we found a tree stand which was removed and a no hunting /tesspassing sign was posted. I still post signs every year and talk with all of my neighbors.
Tanks for the great videos. Who is the big white dog!

We just brought a property in rural Alberta, Canada. We aren’t living there yet as we have to build but have been reclaiming the trails and working on it to get a feel for it. My husband found an entire cow that had been shot and 3 sets of hooves, skulls and skins. Someone had rustled some cattle and processed them on our property! We have installed some gates and put up signs and game cameras. We are also getting to know our neighbours. You’re correct, if people are going to do crimes, those things won’t stop them!

once on my way home from work I stopped on a old back road and was watching a small piebald doe standing in a friends field a little old lady who must have been in her 80's stopped to see if I was broke down and when I told her I was ok ,that I was just looking at a half white deer along side the road when she saw the deer ,she asked me "young man! do you have your muskett?!" I told her yes,but I wasn't allowed by law to shoot from the public road, and I diddn't want that deer any how ,I just wanted to watch it because of how odd it looked ,lol but I have never forgot her .I think she got a touch of buck fever just seeing that deer standing so close to her car.lol but you are very right about getting to know your neighbors.I often take all my neighbors some of everything I catch or find while I am hunting or fishing each time I get a chance.one of my neighbors always tells me if I want to hunt his land to just go he always tells me just go.I always take him a mess of trout or Squirrels or a Backstrap and a ham from a Deer or a sack full of wild mushrooms .or help him split fire wood and if he is gone from home I keep watch over his house and out buildings each day I walk out to his house and check on him because they are getting along in years like me .one old set of my neighbors is gone now.and I really miss them.they usta keep me when I was just a kid.they always told me if I ever seen anything in the creek bottom on their farm that I wanted too hunt to go hunt,I have sat down there and bagged more deer than I can remember over the years.but most times I just pass thru and go off to the mountain on the far side of the creek and hunt over there its all National Forest over there thousands upon thousands of acers.its about 6 miles as a crow flys across that mountain to the far side and next valley.lots of game in there plenty of deer and Black Bears.there is plenty of Bears close by my home they like to visit my trash cans at night they know my bird dog is fenced in the yard so they don't pay him any mind .I keep my old Mossberg loaded with rubber 00 Buck shot .my neighbor wants me to eat the Bears so I have bought a bear tag this year he has lost about 300 pounds of chicken feed this fall to them.so far they ain't bothered his birds.one got killed last year when it broke into a house just down the creek from me the ladys son shot it and killed it on her indoor back porch it had broke in and was eating a big bag of dog food.her son shot it twice in the neck with 00 buck.we hauled it out of her house.lol he told us he diddn't want to kill it.lol I have had one in my backyard it stole 100 pounds of cracked corn from my building I don't really want to kill one either but if it starts hanging around too close I will strech his ol hide with my old musket.LOL

We have a similar situation at Contentment. Our property abuts BLM land and a national wildlife refuge. Our land has always had absentee landowners before us. Elk hunters are used to crossing and even camping on our land. We have posted signs and they come on anyway. They tear down our signs. One time, two guys came right up to our place and asked us what we were doing there! The local hunters are very unhappy that we are occupying and developing our land. To them, we are the trespassers! We are so remote that we don't have neighbors to help us. We really don't know what to do. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

I’m a Texas Landowner. I have signs and purple paint up. I have not seen trespassing on my land but it may happen.
I agree about your approach on handling a Trespasser. The goal is to get them off your property and not get harmed in the process. There’s also another goal. One that most people don’t think about. If a Trespasser gets harmed on your property they can potentially sue YOU. So you really don’t want to become a potential target. Being calm and collected is the best way to go. Even though they’ve not shown you the respect...your endgame is more of a long game. Great video! 👍

Hi Dan. I have read a lot on property rights across several states. 1. no state allows use of deadly force initially, caveat is fear for life or great harm. 2. can use any kind of recording device. 3 can use tricks, like the pull string snaps, caveat no damage, can scare. 4 many states have purple painted fence poles or lines as "marked no trespassing allowed" instead or in addition too signage.

I can relate to this topic we have the same issue especially on the farthest corners of our property, especially during hunting season. I HATE that they cut our fence lines to drive there atvs through. Signs or no signs, what has helped some is we posted under our no tresspassing signs is monitoring by cameras. Its just hard for me to understand the lack of consideration. Love your channel glad I found you.

I think it's really important to replace older signs with new ones. Where I used to go there were several abandoned places with very old signs (back when they were metal and lasted forever). So a nice fresh new sign will really help to keep the honest accidents out.
I don't own land right now, but the neighbourhood FB thing is a great idea. Especially when some of them may really want their privacy. Doesn't replace knowing them for real, but I could really see it helping with the private ones.

So much common sense here. Thank you for posting. Often we just get to see videos about too trigger happy people, and that gives the idea that everybody in your country is like that. You are making way more sense, and I guess the negative videos and reports that cross over to Europe are only the ones that are the exception of the rule.
Too bad we (still) don't have that much land that we need to put up those signs, but who knows... one day... We now own a little house and a very little garden, in the oldest city of Holland, but with trellis fences and one dog, we have a lot of protection going on ;)
    Blessings,
    Diana, from The Netherlands/Holland

If you put a light purple stripe on trees or a piece of board this is the old way and the ones who know this will not trespass. This is what we used and my property backed up to OK. I'ts still used. We had 8 miles of gravel till we hit hardtop and that was 15yrs new. Stay safe and once again Thank you for your SERVICE : 0 peace

100% correct about posting your property lines, but Daniel you also need to put an extra wire at the bottom of your fence to stop your pups from going under and someone shooting your pups.

Great video! Its the same living in the HOOD you have to know your neighbors. I got my hand caught in a lock on my kayak and the neighbor had to come save me lol!

Tresspassing is horrible here in Washington. So many homeless for many different reasons. Ya just can't let em' camp out or cross that line or ya end up with a horrible mess and many times dangerous. I even have a sheriff that lives a block up the road and they don't care. When their minds aren't right they have no boundaries.
We can all try to do the best we can do. Post signs they tear down. Call law enforcement when nesseccary. Be proactive on your own if need be. Definitely be friends with your neighbors like you say. Help eachother out.
    God bless y'all.

I would say maybe putting a name and number on the sign would be an idea. A cheap way I found for driveway access was using a harbor freight small winch that comes with remote and string it across the driveway. I unwound the cable which is 50 feet and strung the cable inside a piece of pipe to weight it down, like you said just having a gate stops the looky loos.

Your calm and common sense approach is refreshing and informative. Do you confine the goats and Big Mac and company more during hunting season?? Spray paint them with flourescent orange marks?? Instruct the kids to keep away from the borders??

Great advice Daniel and that is where ever you live. The neighbors that I have we all look out for one another as one never knows in this day and time. Yes people need to learn the laws in there state especially if you move to another state as they might be different. Thanks!

I only have 10 acres and I have goats and horses. I saw 3 kids out harassing my horses. The kids took off when they saw me, I don't know where they came from, but the kids in the neighborhood steel my not trespassing signs as soon as I put them up. All the property around me is private property, but the people here don't respect private property. My horses had been so abused when I got them that it took me years to get them to trust me, now they're getting headshy again. I plan on getting game cameras and will prosecute anyone who comes on my property without my permission. Here in Florida, if someone comes on my property and gets hurt by my livestock, they can sue me, even though my property is fenced and the only gates are near my house.

Here’s my take on things. We don’t live in the 1800’s & earlier when homesteaders could just go claim a piece of land of their own for free. ALL land is owned now. So if you aren’t standing on land you bought, then it belongs to someone else & you need permission before stepping on it. Simple as that.
I can understand wanting to post signs around the edge of personal property to let others know where a property line is, especially if there are no fences. However states with laws about having to have your property marked with “no trespassing” signs is ridiculous since most of the time you still can’t prosecute a trespasser when you do catch them.

In Idaho property owners used to have to post their property but this year that changed. Now it’s the responsibility of the hunter to know where the property boundaries are. It’s good to have a gps phone app like OnX maps that shows property boundaries. If someone is caught trespassing in Idaho they can lose hunting privileges and be fined as well. Thanks for sharing. Take care, see ya :)

Thank you. Most don't understand what a good neighbor is, really sad. When l lived in the Bush glad l knew my neighbors and most were older and learned a lot from them. Moving to or near towns was the same except drugs and alcohol use was not use to that abuse tried to be nice til l got broken into. They thought they would get my valuables and guns. I moved. No guns taken jewelry taken what was weird was return made a police report. After that report less than a week later came home door unlocked and got to looking around my jewelry return and someone else's property which l turned in. Since landlord didn't get new locks l moved to nicer place.

The trespass laws vary by state. In Ohio, any one on any property with out the owner's or renter's permission is guilty of criminal trespass. Not "knowing" it's private property is no excuse. You are not required to post any signs. I had used a trip wire alarm that shots 12 Ga blanks along with game cameras.

When go elk hunting in the Blue Mountains are favorite area was on private property we would stop at owners home down in the valley and get written permission and Sametime they tell what areas to not go into mostly because that is where their livestock were being contained
