I know it's not very aesthetically pleasing, but I've had GREAT success with fully wrapping entire plants(and their moss pole), only excluding the petiole and leaf, with plastic wrap. It makes the plant think it's in much higher humidity than it really is.
You showing your mistakes makes this channel so much more relatable. We all make mistakes and misjudgements in our plant journeys. Wishing you success with the next effort!
I love to see these long form progress videos of the journey of your plants. It gives me an idea of possible issues I may run into in the near future and I find them very informative. Thanks Jan 😊
OMG, I have been too busy to get an extension on my Glorious, with 2 nodes off the top already 🙀. This reminder couldn't have come sooner. The consequences are evident! Wishing you all the patience you'll need Jan, for your top cutting to become large and lush in the future.😻
You are seriously me while in my home mildly cussing out my plants for acting up while also hugging them at the same time letting them know they are my best friend’ssss! 👏🏼🤣 Amazing video as always! ☺️🪴
Inflos can and will happen because of stress actually! A plant goes "Oh shit I better reproduce before something worse happens." A healthy, mature plant that is intentionally stressed has a good chance to start flowering! It is a common misconception that plants only flower when they are happy - quite the opposite actually. Best example I can give for gardeners is anything in the cabbage family. Stress it and you will never have a good harvest it only gets stringy and flowers as soon as possible even when they are teeny tiny and immature.
I just like how even you who is very knowledgeable and experienced still face some unknowns and learn from them. Thank you for showing us this too. Side note: I live your channel and have shown it to my dad who now is obsessed with your channel. Even vying more plants and changing the potting mix to yours. Which he says it’s the best. Lol!
Hiwdy Plant Guy and fellow Planters! Your Utube on mistakes teaches me 100x more + ! than the good videos, LoL! please have more of these! Love them ❤❤❤!
That is a heck of a workout! You have definitely made me rethink how I am going to tend to some of my plants. Excellent video, Jan! Kisses and loves to Brad!!!
Thank you for sharing this! I learned so much from it. Your ability to explain the process is unmatched on TH-cam! I’m about to start several plants on moss poles that I bought at the IAS in Miami where I was able to meet you. ❤Also going to fertilize my collection with the “Focus Foliage” 🎉❤ Also going to frame your autograph and hang it in my plant room 😊 Love you SPG❤
Oh, I remember that chop and extend. I usually watch your videos for the information and the visuals, but that one stayed in my memory for its pure comedy. I know it wasn't intentional, but thank you nonetheless😆
I made the mistake of not keeping an eye on my adensoniis new growth attaching to my pole, so spots aren’t rooted into the pole, so I did my big chop and extend, and got a few yellow/dead leaves that were used to getting nutrients from the root ball in the pot, the rest of the stems are ok now, everyone is fully rooted (4 stems per pole) but did drop a few leaves. But with 4 on there, you don’t see too much of a difference it’s still quite bushy…. Did the chop and extend (24 inch extension) about a month or so ago, there’s only 6 inches of pole left before I have to do it again lol she’s a shower, AND a grower! 😂❤
I am kinda glad I have fallen out of love for big Philodendrons. There is no way I would’ve been able to have the time and room to grow them into maturity even if they are aesthetically pleasure to my eyes. Your plants are amazing and thanks for sharing your experience
Two month update Jan was very fidgety, and with his right side pocket hanging out, he looked like little kid; so cute! 😍 Almost as cute as the interactions between you and Bradley.
I can almost feel your frustration 😂😂 Thank you for showing this experiment though 😊❤ I am always so unsure of what to do with the top part. Feels wrong to pot it up with 'no' roots 😅🤔 I'm doing a Micans today. Can't say I'm looking forward to the workout 😂😂❤
Normally the top part has heaps of roots inside the pole, never had any issues potting them up straight away but I know, it feels too good to be true hehe
I really enjoy watching ur videos. Ur so funny and relatable. You show ur subscribers not all plants look so perfect an its a long process to get plants to such a good size . Can u tell me what’s that green plant an looks like red inside the veins . Thank u
Hi Jan!! Thank you for sharing and showing your passion on the topic!! ☺️🌱 I hope you got home safely after IAS. I am wondering if Philodendron Glorious tends to go off the pole because of its gloriosum genes. My baby glorious one likes to do it too 😅
Hey :) great meeting you at the Expo :) i reckon you are right! It seems to be a common thing and would make sense to attribute it to the gloriosum genes :)!
@@sydneyplantguy Yep, I decided I could force my Gloriosum to climb. Started off great but the largest of the 3 cuttings has a mind of it's own and wants to be a pole dancer. It looks so full and gorgeous right now but I will probably be in despair before the winter is done. I really need a verracosum, the veining is so delightful. Thanks for sharing, as always!
Hey man, I have a question regarding moss poles. Can you make a video on what to do if the plant is root bound inside a pot with a pole but the vine hasn't outgrown the pole itself. How would you recommend repotting something like this to a bigger pot. I fear that I might have to bury some of the stem for the pole to be at the bottom of the pot. Super confusing.
Can do :) but short answer: you are overthinking it :) just take the plant & pole, put it in a bigger pot & add more substrate :) same principle as with a normal repot without a pole :) yes, some of the stem will be covered by substrate but that’s no different than it is when I dona chop & extend. So you could still follow the way i do it in this video :)!
@@sydneyplantguy I think you got it spot on. My main concern was indeed burying the stem and potentially rotting it. This makes me feel better haha! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your passion with yet another great video. Jan pissed off is so cute! I’ve only got pothos on moss poles at the moment because I can’t seem to keep my philodendrons alive. All my alocasias are sizing up and looking great tho so I’ll just be patient until I get brave enough to try another Gloriousum or Splendid. In the meantime I’ll just continue to watch and enjoy you grow yours so beautifully.
Jan can you put them outside since you are going into spring ? Would it help? I think they looks gorgeous but of course I get what you are saying about waiting for it to have rooted before chopping. The splendid is otherworldly beautiful 💚🌸
Hello Jaan! This is a great video. What would you have done differently if you’re faced with the same situation with the runaway vine? Would you have not done the chop and extend and opted instead to just chop the part with the 5 unattached nodes, and then let it produce the new offshoots? It seems like this chop and extend is a great failure (as in, a great learning experience). As in life, the most valuable lessons are in the failures.
Jan, how come when I water my moss poles, the water always runs down the side? The water goes into the moss pole and always pops out somewhere. I've had only one or two poles not do this. Is it the moss being too compact, or not enough?
It wants to climb … just climb off the pole :D keep in mind the previous pole was about the size of the stem by the time it matured so kinda easy to miss it. Hence i gave it a larger pole now
Jan, how come when I water my moss poles, the water always runs down the side? The water goes into the moss pole and always pops out somewhere. I've had only one or two poles not do this. Is it the moss being too compact, or not enough? I've tried both and had no luck. If the water drips more slowly it still tends to happen.
.. Don't worry about it.. You were just a little late with the watering 🤗 it happens to mee too from time to time.. I just pull my shoulder because I know it's on mee being late with watering, and the moss had dried out completely.. I think of Jan every time it happens 😅
Each 'chapter' Jan showed what he did with both the bottom section and the top section; he usually gives it away but this time he kept it to show us the new growth, it grew 2 inflows as well as reduced leaf sizes.
Hey, I have a question for you.. I have, for the last year, been trying to root some cuttings, but they just won't put out roots.. I have tried in water, in dark vases, and I have tried in moss, and in moist soil, both in humid boxes and without. I live in an old farmhouse, and my theory is that it is just too cold.. Any ideas? The cuttings are P. Micans, E. Pinnatum, M. Glorious, M. Pinnatipartita and R. Decursive.. So very different plants.. They are alive and well, which.. I don't know how, but they are trying to create leaves, but no roots..!!! 😅🫣
Warmth is definitely the way to go. Had the same issue last year and after months of waiting (closed plastic box with moss), I bought a heating mat and placed it under there. They almost immediately kicked into action 😃 I hope this helps. If you don't want to buy anything, maybe it works to put it in the warmest of your rooms... maybe on the kitchen cabinets above oven, cooking place, etc. or next to a radiator. Don't worry about light. It technically doesn't need any to grow roots
If you feel the cold temp is the cause, maybe try a heat mat in a prop box? I’ve had good success with rooting cuttings that way in the winter. Good luck😀🌿
I heard recently that you shouldn't change the water too often, as the plant will give out natural rooting hormones, diffusing into the water. If you change the water too frequently, you lose the build up of those hormones. However, not changing the water at all = rot! A fine balance
I know it's not very aesthetically pleasing, but I've had GREAT success with fully wrapping entire plants(and their moss pole), only excluding the petiole and leaf, with plastic wrap. It makes the plant think it's in much higher humidity than it really is.
I just did this to my White wizard it doesn’t look good at all but my plant absolutely lovesssss it!
Very good idea, it’s the large equivalent of the ziploc bag and a cutter in moss. I have always good succes with this, but not the most esthetic 😆
How do you do that? Is the plant entirely inside the pole or do you wrap moss around the stem as it grows new leaves?
Wrap cling wrap around the stem and pole as it grows.
@@carolinebaines8735 that’s what I do. And then, as the roots secure themselves into the moss pole, I can take off the cling wrap.
Appreciate the content(and the honesty :) ). Should be a great help chopping my newly fenestrated Epi Mint which has really gone skyward. Thanks!

Yes definitely should have air layered at least a couple of nodes … but wasn’t really planning ahead here, just tackled the problem on the spot! :)

No i just let it dry out for a bit :) never sealed any of my cuts in 4 years of chop & extending and no issues :)

Don’t let your moss fully dry out. Dry moss is hydrophobic & will repell instead of absorbing it :)
