    the most impressive part of this is that you filmed the intro "before" shot and then REMEMBERED 10 months later to film the "after" shot and still knew where the "before" footage was🤣

    I envy the fact you have never had mealys! I live in the southern states (Georgia specifically) and can literally open my front door in the spring/summer and see them freely flying around outside like ashes and all over my bushes/woods behind my house yearly like clockwork! 😬😩🫣😮‍💨 I also found out this is also why the praying mantis LOVE my woods to feed on the mealy bugs! I refuse to put my plants outside because of them but I would loveeeeee to! Lastly all of your informative content is always just as amazing as your plants are! 🪴☺️

    PERFECT TIMING!! i just bought a verrucosum with thrips a few days ago!! it was 15€ at a random gardencenter that usually only sells super common plants.
    i picked the plant with the least visible thrips damage, but it had some larvae on the leaf undersides which i rinsed off and then treated with insecticide spray. maybe i will add systemic treatment to it as well.
    it had 4 different plants in the pot, 2 really small ones and 2 medium sized ones. the bigger plants are already on a sphagnum mosspole right now :) the plants have been separated into two pots (one for the bigger and one for the smaller ones) and repotted into better substrate. i think i will add the smaller ones to the pole in a few months when i size up the pot and they are big enough for me to find a point where they can attach. the roots looked pretty underwhelming on them so its good to know that its normal for them to look so meh.
    thanks to your advice i will be paying extra attention to keeping the mosspole moist and i will move my humidifier closer to it as well

    That was really, really interesting Jan. it’s looking so beautiful. Could you chop back a longer plant stem so the lower ones can catch up or would that ruin it? I have been sprinkling diatomaceous earth around the top of the pot on the substrate because I’m sure the wee bugs like to crawl on there too & so far I have been super impressed with the results especially with my hoyas that are mealy bug magnets & I haven’t had a spider mite problem so far this year. The systemic spray I have used when I’ve had a real concern is Groventive Garden, I’m sure you must have it in Australia. It is really, really good. Honestly I don’t think I have ever seen a cat like Brad, he has the most amazing personality I have ever seen 🤫 don’t tell my Zena I said that. He is super special 🥰 Hope your Mum is having a wonderful time 👍

    Great rescue and video, Jan! However, a more user and planet friendly solution for the mealy bugs, might be a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution in a spray bottle. (It is readily available in most drug or big box stores around the world and is rather inexpensive. As always, your subscribers should use precaution and wear gloves, a face mask and protective goggles or protective eyewear, when they are spraying their plants for mealybugs with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. Most important, spray your plant/plants outdoors or in a very well ventilated area and let them dry out outside or in a well ventilated area - that is away from living and sleeping quarters. Last but not least, your subscribers, should always keep their 70% isopropyl alcohol solution and their filled spray bottle, safely up and away from children.) I learned this from a very experienced plantsman and nursery owner on TH-cam. I was shocked as to how well it worked!

    Jan, do you recommend removing heavy soil from plants when you bring them home? Some that I've bought are in really moisture retentive peaty soil from the grower and I'm not sure what's the to do. Thank you for the great video.
    Is that savoury cake for Brad? My cats eat that too.

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Usually the mix Growers use is so water retentive, because they grow them in really hot greenhouses so the plants need the extra water. Ideally you change the mix to something that works better in your average indoor conditions but of course all subject to your specific conditions & willingness to water. I rather use a chunky mix & water frequently.

    Hi Jan! My verrucosum keeps growing without leaves. It keeps putting out growing tips or cataphylls (not sure if this is what it's called). When it opens, it reveals another cataphyll, then another one. I have multiple nodes that have no leaves. Is this normal? Is there a way to avoid it? It's getting so anticlimactic. I get excited for a new leaf, then I find out there's no leaf inside. 🙂

    I believe these videos taken over several months are the most informative and valuable for people to really learn from. They answer most questions that new growers have when they get a new plant. They can see the process and progress through several months and any changes that need to be done for the plant to mature. Well done, Jan and Bradley!

    Another fantastic video! Although I have a green thumb, I only dared to try mosspoles after I found your channel. Greatly explained - from your own huge experience, and not just parroted like many people do on TH-cam. Thanks for all the mistakes you save me! ☺

    I get what you mean though bc some plants just look so interesting while sizing up and lose some of those qualities over time

    I’ve seen a few people recommend rubbing alcohol, but it doesn’t actually work - I watched someone on TH-cam showing how they eventually come back to life 😂 you need denatured alcohol like methylated spirits, 1 part alcohol 3 parts water.

    Always happy if there is a new video from you :D
    I often recommend your videos because you always give a reason for your doing and you do proper test before you give your feedback, I really appreciate that.
    mealy bugs die when they have contact with alcohol.
    And if you cut up the plant anyway, I would have just filled a tub with water, soap and some rubbing alcohol (DIY insecticidal soap) and submerged the cutting in it for a few minutes. I sometimes take pests as an opportunity to cut up a plant and then I do that. roots I wash off with clean water afterwards, the rest I just let drip off and dry. If it´s a more resistant pest like thrips I root the cuttings in water (I like that anyway) and this way I can wash them off super easy if I feel the need to.

    Have you considered using Beneficial Nematodes and or preditory mites to take care of your pests? It was a game changer for me and now everything I grow is in "living soil". Nematodes improve the soil health and devour any pests in the soil... fairly quickly.. and permanently. The beneficial mites are also great for pests. I'd bet that'd take care of your spider mites.

    Vericosums hate me 😥 I just found a pot with 6 babies for $19.95, thanks Bunnings , so I'm giving it one last try. I have already potted them on 2 moss poles with chunky aroid mix. Do you think I should get the roots into a more water retentive mix?

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've always used my chunky aroid mix & it works. But they definitely love the moss pole over a pole with chunky mix :)

    I hit most pests with isopropryl alcohol if I really have to. (Which you can buy in woolies and coles in convenient spray bottles in the medication section). Like you I will just rinse plants regularly under the hose. I also have a steady army of lady bugs in my garden and sun room. I think they do the bulk of the job as I always have some pests but never in pandemic proportions. I view them as lady bug attractors so don't want to treat them with toxins ever. Every bug seems to have a purpose.
    I watched in great awe as a few lady bugs completely cleared my ancient giant rose bush of aphids in just a couple of days a few weeks back. Nature is amazingly equipped to deal with it's own issues (except humans, we are the biggest pests).
    That was some tangent, but anyway I do recommend rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol to squirt the odd infestations as a long time gardener and a nurse. Quick drying, sterile, no oil (so won't risk foilage burn) and can be used on self for small wounds inflicted by plants or cats. Can also be sprayed on your gardening tools if you are concerned about cross infection risks.
