7 Days in a Balcony Cabin - Cruising Alaska: Worth It?
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ก.ย. 2024
- I’m currently on a cruise sailing across Alaska and for the last 5 days I’ve been staying in a balcony cabin. Normally I’m happy with an inside cabin or perhaps an ocean view but as I was expecting beautiful Alaskan scenery and travelling 4300 miles from home, I decided to book a standard balcony cabin. It is the most popular cabin type on this ship with over 1000 balcony cabins onboard so I wanted to find out why.
This video is just one part of a series. There's lotssssss more to explore here:

I did wonder if i might end up spending all my time up on the top decks so perhaps the balcony upgrade would be a waste of money, I wondered if it might be too cold to use the balcony much anyway and I also wondered if would regret not booking a suite or something even bigger. It could have gone either way.
When I booked this cruise I didn’t pick my specific cabin location so I was excited to see my cabin number appear on my booking documents, I was assigned cabin 14 266 and I went straight to Norwegians website to see where that was. I found it towards the back of deck 14.
I wondered if we might feel more movement back here but it looked like the cabin was in an otherwise good location with nothing that could be noisy around it. It didn’t take me long to realise that the buffet was at the other end of the ship but a walk between me and the buffet isn’t a bad idea at all. Not that it stopped me from bringing snacks back to my room.
It was easy to find our cabin when we got onboard, there were lots of signs and knowing that we were at the back made it easier. I love the modern decor of the stairs and carpets and in particular, the fish carpets that are in the corridors. The fish always swim forward and this is something you’ll find on a few of the Norwegian ships, when I was on Norwegian Prima last year they had arrows in the carpets design pointing forward for the same reason.
The modern decor continued into the cabin and I personally love this style, it’s not overwhelming but not boring, a comfortable classy middle ground. The carpet looked like fireworks and it bought some colour into the cabin.
To the right hand side there is a big sofa, that’s actually where I’m sitting to recording this and opposite me there is a desk with a big mirror.

Welcome to Seattle. We do this cruise on this ship or NCL Bliss once a year. Easy family vacation since port is only 20 minutes away. Balcony is almost a must on an Alaskan cruise. No matter how many times we've done it, views are always spectacular.
I agree! That sounds spectacular 😀❤️
My cruise was inside. I regretted it. Lesson learned!
Of all the cruses I’ve ever done,Alaska is head and shoulders the best ever
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
This is hands down my favorite of all the cruising channels on the Tube. And these live on board videos are the best!
Thx!
So glad you enjoy them, takes more time and planning as you can imagine but I like it too! ❤❤
This is my dream trip, ive wanted to do a cruise to Alaska for so long! It will never happen for me so at least i can pretend im on my dream trip whilst i watch this! What an amazing trip.
I hope it does happen for you one day!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Norwegian Encore was my favorite ship to cruise Alaska on! We’ve been 7 times on different ships and cruise lines each time. The Alaska excursions are some of the most memorable we’ve ever done!
Oooo!! 7 times!! Incredible ❤❤
Why did you like Encore so much? We are currently looking at itineraries on Encore, Bliss, and Celebrity Edge. Celebrity because we love the new Edge class ships and the time in ports is better than NCL. Thanks!
Love hearing that Norwegian Encore was your favorite!
@@ashleys4652 for us it was the first time on such a large ship. We weren't overwhelmed by the size and it never seemed crowded. There was always a place to sit and chill or be active. Ship was clean, food was good. Staff was organized for port calls and it was easy to get on/off.
Making me miss Alaska so bad. 😩 My husband and I took our first cruise for our honeymoon to Alaska, and we loved it so much we went back the next year just to roadtrip. I honestly think an Alaskan cruise is a perfect introduction to the state because it gives you a taste but the cruise takes care of everything else.
Yessss so true! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Love that your jumper colour was the only decision you had to make!
Me too! Haha. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Those Alaska views 😍 - now I really must get myself on Norwegian
YOU MUST YOU MUSTTTTTT 🤓❤️
The *most* important thing is getting yourself to Alaska, the second most important is how!
That's why I always book balcony cabins. To me it would be an absolutely no-go to cruise in an inside cabin.
Thanks for your videos, cheers from Austria!
Thank you! 😁❤️
Balcony cabin for Alaska is a must if one can afford it...views are amazing......
It is amazzzing. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
The combination of you and Norwegian cruises just seems to be a match made in heaven! So cool to see you back on the same itinerary as your very first cruise too...if 11 year old Emma could see you now!
Thanks so much Jonathan, I hope little me would think I'm cool!! ;)
You would have quietly sailed right past me around 11pm on your first night. I live on a small island and we love watching the ships, all lit up in the distance :)
Awwwh, love that! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Alaska was gorgeous. Rained a lot, but I saw whales, eagles, mountain goats, a seal stalking fish, and more salmon I would ever see in one place. It was the only cruise I was ever sick on though, and friends told me "The water is very calm."
Oh how strange! I’m jealous of seeing goats ha ha 😂🎉
Looks like a fabulous cruise - the scenery is just unreal!! That cabin is impressive. I’m always impressed when a cruise line considers outlets 👏👏👏
Yesss, the last ship I was on (P&O's Aurora) just had one socket to share haha. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
My wife and I just got back from an Alaska trip on the Celebrity Edge. We booked the Edge based on your recommendation. You were right about the Edge, it was amazing. The cookies were behind glass and had to be requested. Probably a good thing for portion control.
Ooo that sounds fantastic!!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
We recently got back from a 7 day Alaska cruise. We had an inside cabin and had no regrets. It was so rainy, windy, and cold, that I doubt we would have spent much time on the balcony anyway. And the balcony cabin was about double the price of the inside cabin. We spent SOME time outside on the top deck but we found that we really had to bundle up with layers to be able to do it for any length of time. We enjoyed much of the mountain viewing from inside the ship looking out a window. Most everyone else did the same. It's Alaska--you never know what you are going to get with the weather.
Double is crazy! And yesss, so unpredictable. We got so lucky. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Great to see Emma in the USA . We love you.
We cruised the Inside Passage of Alaska with Viking right after the pandemic. We are younger than most Viking Guests but the best part about Viking Ocean is everyone gets a balcony . Alaska was amazing. Glad you had a great time
We will consider Norwegian next time. . Captain Hudson looks great with eagles .
Thanks so much you're very kind! That sounds incredible I love Viking. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
We did this exact cruise last fall with an inside cabin and I think it was fine. We just spent a lot of time in the observation lounge and other spaces with a view (which had the advantage that you could go to whichever side had the best view vs just seeing where your balcony was facing). On Glacier Bay day, we got up fairly early to make sure we got a spot in the observation lounge.
I'm sure a balcony would've been nice to have of course, but it was by no means necessary to enjoy the cruise!
Yesss completely agree, same for me. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
My favorite cruise of all time (so far) is Alaska! Glad you have enjoyed The Great Land Emma!
Thanks so much 🥹❤️
Hi Emma..just read about your inside cabin on Cunard. You said you take your daylight alarm....I must get one! My hubby lectures on ships & when they put us in an inside cabin, we go to bed with the bridge camera on tv, volume down on the ships that have background music. Anyway, it's night vision so dark at night, light when the sun comes up. Works great...especially with the jet lag time warp thing 😊 I so enjoy your videos & tours...you're extremely good at this! Go Emma!
Thanks so much for watching and your kind words! I appreciate it 😀❤️
I was on this same cruise. I saw you one time. What fantastic weather we had that week.
Hope you had a great time!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Just home from an Alaska cruise! like you we always do inside cabin but the Alaska cruise we did an balcony for the first time and don’t regret it at all the scenery was a amazing and glad we could enjoy from our room
So lovely to see this! Me & my wife are going on our first ever cruise in a couple of weeks - and it’s Alaska! Thank you for whetting our appetite 😊
So envious yours is in the future!!! Have the best time ever!!!! 😀❤️
The "do not disturb" button is a great feature. The dangling tags are such a nuisance.
P.S. I see Captain Hudson has a couple of stuffed eagles to keep him company.
He does!! 😂❤
Great to see you in a balcony cabin for this trip. I did actually cruise in an inside cabin for my Alaskan cruise, but loved running around the top decks soaking in the views, so didn’t really regret it.
Encore looks such a beaut of a ship!
Yesssss, I'd definitely be happy in any cabin being there, but it was a lovely treat. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Hi Emma! Just wanted to say I found your channel a couple of months back and am really enjoying your content. I find your videos so engaging and entertaining. Each one is like a little virtual vacation. Keep up the great work!

Always a fun journey with you hosting, Emma ... and my Britishisms are getting better, too.

I love your reviews! Super informative and relaxing to watch! Well done!

Amazing video yet again, by the way, I usually bring a few used gift cards to keep the power on lol.
Ha ha, always a good idea!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Smart idea. My wife was really mad when I left the room with my key card while she was in the shower . . .

I"ve been waiting for these updates! I'm going on this same cruise on NCL in September.
Thanks so much! This is just part 1 of 4 and I hope to have 2 more out next week. 🎉❤
Thank you for the wonderful views and perspective! Appreciate your knowledge. TY!
I love seeing Captain Hudson in the same outfit as the one I just got. ❤
6:54 I laughed when you said, "I was always able to do any work that I needed to do" -- while the camera showed a plate of cookies. 😊
Haha 🤫🤣
Each time I see a new video I am happy😊
Awhhhhh Thank you! 😁❤️
Great video Emma, just wanted to give a small extra thanks!
Thanks so much you’re very kind and already do more than enough!! 😅❤
My grandparents had always cruised with Norwegian, so when my mom and I went on our first cruise we booked with Norwegian too. We got a complimentary upgrade to a balcony room and that was a BAD idea 😂We've only ever booked balcony since. We absolutely love Norwegian, and we took a family trip to Alaska in September of 2022. Absolutely loved it and would love to go back. Happy cruising!
Ha ha, that’s what they hope!! 😂😂😂😂
Balcony...Alaska...YES! Another great video.
Thank you! 😁❤️ 3 more to come from this trip!
I took the Encore Alaska cruise in October with a balcony cabin. Those views brought back fond memories. Glacier Bay was gorgeous but so cold. I loved the balcony because we could go out for photos and a closer look, or sit inside and stay warm while viewing. We had the couch by the balcony which was better for us. Got my Captain Hudson recently and can't wait to sail with him next year.
Awh Thank you! 😁❤️!!
I was just on an alaska cruise three weeks ago. My first one ever. Beautiful up there
So beautiful!! Thanks for watching! 🥳👏🏼
I did this cruise a few weeks ago on the Norwegian Bliss which I believe is this ships twin. It was my first ever cruise and I had a solo studio cabin and it worked quite well for me. They had a live view screen next to the bed to give you a "window" to the outside. Not quite a balcony but for my budget was perfectly acceptable. There were plenty of spaces to sit and watch the fantastic Alaska scenery to pass by. Norwegian did a great job!
Ooo that sounds lovely! I have one similar on a future cruise. So glad you had a great time. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
My sister and I went to Alaska last June and wished we had taken shorts. Lol. We loved our balcony! Alaska is beautiful
Ha ha! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Emma does the best videos!
Thanks so much 🥹❤️

Awwhh haha, don't worry this is video 1 of 4 from this trip! 2 more next week. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Just got back from Alaska this past Sunday. Spent a week in Fairbanks and Denali, then sailed onboard the Sapphire Princess from Whittier to Vancouver. Balcony cabin was worth every penny. I set up my camera tripod on the balcony so I could use a large telephoto lens and got some great wildlife and glacier calving shots that I never could have taken with a hand-held. Only negative about the trip is that there was an incredible aurora event the first weekend we were there, but since it never really got dark at night in Fairbanks we weren't able to see it. Had to tell the folks back home - who DID see the aurora - that we were too far north to see the northern lights.
Ha ha, so close but so far!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Went on this same itinerary last week, had a blast!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼

Great video Emma it brings back memories. I sat with binoculars a lot of the time hoping to see a bear but didn't.
Really enjoyed this video and Norwegian is very appealing for their style of cruising. Look forward to the other 3 videos. 😊
Thank you!! Coming this week 🎉❤
Thank you Emma for making your videos portray the joy of cruising. I want that cookie 🍪.

I like the fish on the carpet, simple but effective!
We went on a winter cruise out of Perth [Western Australia]. It was just a three day jaunt about, and back to Fremantle. It was during the bird flu epidemic, and a lot of people [including crew] got very ill. I have a strong stomach, but when nausea hit, I would go up on deck, and watch the water in the swimming pool do weird gymnastics, going from one end of the pool to another, and when it hit the end, a wall of water would sprout up, and collapse back down, and the process repeated. That was awesome fun to watch.
We did have an outer cabin with a window, but a balcony would have been even better. But the price was what you might pay for a meal at a 7-star restaurant [about $250 each, if memory serves]. The meals were excellent, and that probably did not help the nausea thing, because we tackled them with a little too much enthusiasm, given the conditions
But it was an excellent "taste-test" of what to expect on a cruise. The good and the bad.
As we didn't go anywhere, it was not a fair test, but I suspect that mid-ocean would be very boring, as we are not really party animals. Humans are perfectly OK, but usually best in small doses.
Given the challenging conditions for everyone, the crew actually did a very good job. We quickly learned not to ask for too much, as crew were dealing with other crew-mates, who were ill, and ill passengers. In fact, everyone who was reasonably OK, looked after others that were struggling [crew or passengers], which was heart-warming. When the chips are down, most folks end up doing the right thing. So it was a good experience from that POV too.
Normally, we like to travel everywhere by air, and enjoy the ground experience. However, this vlog is making us keep an open mind.
Awh, sounds good!!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
We had an obstructed cabin with an ocean view in July, 2024. No balcony. It rained almost the whole time. We were just a deck above the promenade, so we could easily sit and watch any scenery. It was $1000 more for a balcony, but we decided against it. Maybe next time we’ll get a balcony.
I am guessing, before watching, that you will be really happy with the balcony cabin. I ‘did’ Alaska in 1995 on the now retired Holland America Rotterdam. It was my first cruise. It was spectacular.
You got it! Haha 🎉❤
So fun to see your video as I had just been on that ship to do the Panama Canal cruise. Three days later I did the Alaska Cruise on the Norwegian Sun. I loved both ships, but still prefer the smaller ship. I hope you were able to see “The Choir of Man” while aboard the Encore and the Beatles show as well. Phenomenal! We’re off on our next two back-to-back cruises in the Mediterranean in a couple of days - woo hoo for travel! Except for jet lag. Ugh. We live in Oregon and it’s a 9 hour time difference to Athens….
Yess we did! Awh I loved Sun too, such a cute little ship! Oh yeah that jet lag is awful!! ❤❤❤
I'm going to Alaska next year, so looking forward to it. A bucket list trip ✨️
Have a great time! 🥳🥳
I'm a Seattleite who visited London on vacation years ago. The British Airways nonstops between Sea-Tac and Heathrow helped me adjust to the time differences quite well.
The flight to London took off at 6 P.M. Pacific time, I was able to get some hours of sleep on the 9-and-a-half-hour flight, and we arrived in London before noon. By 9 P.M. BST, I was worn out and gladly plopped onto my hotel bed. I woke up at 8 A.M., automatically adjusted to British time.
A week later, the flight left Heathrow in the early afternoon, and 7-and-a-half-hours later I touched down at Sea-Tac, also in early afternoon. By the time 8 P.M. came, I needed to hit the bed, and the next morning I was back on my usual body clock.
I'll chime in about my observations working with Alaska cruise passengers at the Seattle ports in your other videos in this series.
Yessss that's so good!! Thank you for watching! 😁❤️
I've never done an Alaska cruise but I spent 8 days in Ketchikan in 2021, and everyone I met from the cruise ships all talked about how beautiful the scenery was all along the inside passage.
Oh yes! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Looks fabulous!
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
A new Emma Cruises video. Life is good again.
Awhh Thanks so much 🥹❤️
I am going on a cruise to Alaska week after next on HAL. My roommate upgraded us from oceanview to balcony (apparently, HAL made an offer she couldn’t refuse), so I am super excited to go. It looks amazing! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos…
BTW, Capt. Hudson will be coming with us. Got a version 4 a week or so ago, so he’s definitely coming with! 💜
Oooo that’ll be INCREDIBLE!!! Have a great time! 🥳🥳
Props for pronouncing "Glacier Bay" as the locals do. 😻
Ha ha, I didn't know there was any other way to be honest! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
@@EmmaCruises Most Brits pronounce it with the A in 'hat' rather than the one in 'may', but in the US and Canada, it's pronounced the way you did. I love your videos, even though I'm not interested in going on a cruise myself (but I'm not saying never!😸). 😻

Excellent video, Emma. I agree that food and clothing choices on a cruise are the most difficult!😁👍🏽
I also also do the little trick of throwing my dirty clothes into my luggage. It makes it very easy to “pack up” and disembark.😉
Yesss!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Potato. Great video, Emma. It didn't seem very cold on this cruise. I enjoyed your cabin review. You focused on the things I would like to know if I were taking a cruise. Alaska is a bucket-list destination.

Yes!! Ha ha. Thank you! 😁❤️
I got a ridiculously cheap balcony upgrade on my Alaska cruise on Jewel last year..
..I didnt use it as much as I thougjt as spent my scenic cruising time on deck.
Was a surprise. The balcony was more a floor to ceiling window. I didnt spend a lot of time day out on it. I may have stood out on for moments.
As I day, was a surprise.
Ooo good to know though!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
I'm going on my third Alaska cruise later this year, though this is the first time I'll be in a balcony. Each time has been different; the first was on Royal Caribbean from Seward to Vancouver, the second was on Princess round trip from Seattle, while this upcoming one is on Disney round trip from Vancouver.
Oooo!!!! Have a great time! 🥳🥳
Just got off an NCL Alaskan cruise today and they don't provide conditioner in the shower, it's shampoo and shower gel. I believe you CAN get conditioner in little tubes if you ask you cabin steward.
I live in Oregon, so luckily I could DRIVE to Seattle and didn't have to fly. One of the few perks for living on the west coast of the USA when it comes to cruising.
Aha, I bought my own. That sounds good! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
That green dress with the puffy sleeves looks gorgeous on you!! 😊
Thanks so much 🥹❤️
My two cents: you can still have an amazing time on an AK cruise without the balcony, but I do think it is well worth the upgrade to have it. We saw some great wildlife from our balcony, and we had our own front row seat when we went down the fjord to a glacier.
Yesss, wildlife is rarely on a schedule is it? ha ha. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Loved our Norwegian cruise to alaska. Our sofa was closer to the balcony with a curtain between the beds and sofa you could pull across for privacy. It was handy in the morning I could 1:45 sit on sofa looking out while mom slept without it being too bright. Hope you see a bear 🐻!! You might even see a porcupine
Ooo!! Wow ahah. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
I loved seeing you on this cruise! I was almost too shy to say hi (we were the couple in the hot tub😂).
For a first Alaska cruise I didn’t think it could have been any better!

One advantage of balcony cabins - no chair hogs! If you want to see wildlife there are plenty of bars that would qualify.
Yesss! The thing about wildlife is it isn’t on schedule 😂😂😂
yes i was hoping since i found your channel that you would be doing an Alaska cruise on the encore as i am schedule to go on one next year at the beginning of the season.
Ha ha, what a coincidence!! Lots of videos about that coming very soon! ❤🎉
Looks like a great ship. I was on Sapphire Princess one week after you departed Alaska. Norwegian Encore followed us from port to port during our sailing...saw her almost every day. Small world. 🙂
Oooo!! Lovely. Hope you enjoyed 😀❤️

I always put up the do not disturb sign when I am at a hotel. I do not get my apartment cleaned daily, I do not need my room to be cleaned daily either. The less people I have messing about in my room the better tbh.

Polar bears are most active between August and October. They gather during the ice-free period along the coast near Barter Island where the village of Kaktovik is located. This time of year they are hanging around on sea ice and will be hard to spot. Fun fact: under their white coats, a polar bear's skin is black.
