Me and my buddies used to bike around the community and we always ended up at my place to play this game all evening or in the heat of the summer afternoon. This takes me back to simpler times. "Hi, this is Ken Griffey Jr. Let's play some Major League baseball. Ca-ca-call me, Junior. Showtime!" Your videos are always top notch. thank you for your dedication to remembering the fine, fine console.
I'm not a baseball fan but this game was part of my childhood. I loved its simple to pick up controls and it has a cheat where every hit you make as ken griffey jr. Is a home run
@@n64glennplant i love this game for tis pick up and play but the only issue i have is one thing when im advancing to bases either by stealing or extra time with the c buttons if the catchers catch me and try to get me out i dont know how to make my basemen go back to their old base
@@n64glennplant I was a kid and this is the baseball game my Dad got for me (cause he's huge into the sport). But looking back on it, I really enjoyed its light arcade style gameplay especially. The realistic simulations haven't ever been my thing
@@n64glennplant fun fact there are secret codes! new teams Highlight 'Exhibition' on the first baseball (menu) that pops up. Now simultaneously press all four C buttons. Do this many times and you will hear a beep. Then go to the All-Star teams and there will be two new teams: Nintendo and Angel Studios. and more famously the Angels in the Outfields This code will allow one of your fielders to fly. Field a ball with an outfielder and run into the infield. Now run to any base except first. Throw the ball around in this order: 1, 2, 3, H, 3, 2, H, 1, 2, 3, H. On the next play, instead of picking the ball up, press A to do a running dive . Your fielder will leap into the air. Press A or B to "swim" through the air. If you let off the controls at all the fielder will land.
All I remember about this is in Nintendo Power magazine, where a reader was asking if the voice sample was "Call me G" or "Homey G". The writers set him straight by confirming that it was neither!
Although the All Star baseball series had better graphics, I still prefer this game over them because of the fact that Ken Griffey Jr (who was a phenom at that time) endorsed this game. There was a follow up game a year later called KGJr Sluggers that improved the presentation of the menus and graphics so I recommend checking that as well.
This is my absolute favorite baseball video game! I play it almost daily. It's so much fun to draft your team in the season mode. There are so many great players from this era to choose from. The major flaw I feel the game has, is that you can't change the difficulty in season mode. It's always on easy. I literally win games 30-0, but usually average at least 15 runs/game. If you want a real challenge, play the world series on all-star difficulty. 😜 I really need to make a video of me playing this game. I think you would be quite impressed with my skill level of this game. Greatest. Baseball. Game. Ever. Made.
I’m a baseball guy, played it all my life. I had this game as a kid. It’s the best baseball game I’ve ever played. Second is one for game cube, but I forget the name.
I don't even want to know how many 1000's of hours I have into this game. I've been playing it pretty regularly for over 20 years. I could never get into the All Star series, and slugfest was a let down for gameplay, which was a huge let down because I loved the concept of having create a player and difficulty settings.
Man, my buddies and I played this game so much - I remember one time we allowed one another to score as much as possible to see how high it'd record our scores. I wasn't even a baseball fan (I usually go to one game a year) and this is the only baseball game I've ever played.
Glenn plant with the video drops. Always a pleasure to remember these games and go back to the good ones (usually end up playing Geoman, hybrid heaven, blitz, perfect dark, and worms though...)
I never played this one, but I used to have the sequel "Ken Griffey Jr's Slugfest" and I loved it. I remember loving the character creator and being able to have the announcer say your character's name over the speakers. Only problem was he only had a certain pool of names he could say and he'd only ever say my first name (because of my weird last name). I really didn't care for baseball, even though I spent probably 8-10 years actually playing it.
The way the announcer divides the first and last names always seemed awkward so only having a first name said never satisfied me, so I would just change my character's last name to something the announcer would say.
The control/mechanics seem more natural and realistic than the other games. If you miss a swing, you can see your mistake and improve instead of just feeling like you lost a coin flip.
I played this all the time growing up. I had traded for every major star in season mode. I basically had an all-star team in both batting and pitching. 60/90 to nothing was common.
Great game but unfortunately the season mode was very flawed. There is no way to set the difficulty and it makes it super easy early on and then ramps up the difficulty towards playoffs. You could only set the difficulty in exhibition and world series modes
@@n64glennplant Thanks! I'm a big fan by the way. N64 is my childhood console so it's awesome to see someone giving thorough reviews. I can truly see the effort you put into your reviews.
I wonder how it compares to the sequel, Ken Griffey jr. Slugfest. I got that one for less than 3$ when i got my N64 a few years back, and i played it less than 10 min :P
Didn't a dude from rare help make this game? Maybe it was just the audio, I remember him mentioning it in a rare video how he wasn't into baseball at the start being from Europe but then became a fan

no idea I don't keep track, when I have a spare few hours ill knock the odd sports game off the list. takes way less than a bigger title and acts as nice filler between the bigger release which are normally on Fridays

Remember that Simpsons episode were Ken Griffey Jr kept drinking the nerve tonic and got gigantism? Good times
Funny story this kid in my class had giantism he had to have injections to stop it
It's like there's a party in my mouth and everyone's invited.
Yeah I do remember it, his head was massive and Mike Scioscia got radiation poisoning from working at the plant 😄
This was the best of the baseball games on the 64 for sure. Not saying much in my book but at least it's playable
