That too but even if you don't OPEN those chests its still possible for the Zodiac Spear chest in the Original F12 to still NOT show up EVER in its location.
The PS1 version of FF4 had those Mad Ogres in a chest in Eblan castle and if you were under-leveled or just cruising along level-wise before opening it, it would mean game over.
Sooo I played on psp with no means of making a save so my first playthrough became an Iron man run by necessity. You can imagine my "surprise " at finding that party wipe in a box
I was about to comment about this exact chest with these Mad Ogres. Young child me would keep forgetting which chest had them only to die. Once I learned which chest it was, I often would leave it for later Edit: this was the case on each version of FF4 I've played from snes to gba to ds, heck even in the pixel remaster
Plague is just a FF4 vanilla boss, complete with the same mechanic from 4. It'd suck to get surprised by, but 6 is where Reraise (life 3) was born, so one character with a ribbon and the fight's basically over because they can just reraise the group. Now, the safe in Shinra Mansion in ff7, that's a painful surprise because it's a surprise boss in a "chest" that is opened by a puzzle and with a timer on entering the code to open it. (the one with the boss Lost Number within, guarding the Odin summon, Red XIII's lv4 limit break manual, and the key to Vincent's room in the basement)
Ribbons are useless Plague in FF4 at least ONLY uses Doom's timer + Haste to make it kill you faster it never attacks you but in FF6 GBA Ribbons won't null the Doom timer and it still uses Haste to make the timer kill you faster but 8x 9999 hits against Plague in FF6 GBA still kills it in 1 turn same wiith 8x 9999 Ultima spells. I had MORE trouble killing NESLUG in the GBA version since ANY attack that hits its shell results in it using a instant kill move that can ONLY be nulled via summoning Phantom but the SHELL part can heal its HEAD part using 9999 Curaga counters.
Consider my irritation getting party wiped in FF4 buy the doom eye monster in the final dungeon without saving in the next door save room, because I picked the wrong room to go through first.
there is (maybe was now, cant recall) a system for PotD at least, ONLY bronze will be mimics early on, then Silvers and last golds, you know, the ones you REALLY REALLY NEED to open for pomanders later on. I am trying to beat PotD solo on MCH, that interrupt is useful but im certain they become immune to it later on.
There is only one time when I like opening a Mimic in Palace: if you're running with a friend and Rage is already active. "Hey, got a Mimic over here." "On it." ^^
Any of the ultimate weapon chests in the Lunar Subterra in Final Fantasy IV. Low points being Ogopogo and the Wyvern. Both of whom are harder versions of the already tough bosses Leviathan and Bahamut.
If you're unprepared for them, the Hill Gigas encounters in Karnak Castle in FFV can ruin you, especially because you're on a time limit when the chests are available. Collecting every treasure in the castle AND beating the boss AND learning its Blue Magic is an exercise in luck and preparation.
FFXI mimics were a terror. Draw-in so you cant run away, super fast attacks and def. Most ways to survive is just to use a teleport scroll and hope you dont die before the warp goes off.

I just beat the PS1 version of FFV yesterday. Ran into Shinryuu in that chest before the boss who presents you with the final save before X-Death / ExDeath. It used a water attack against the whole party as soon as the fight began, and fortunately, Faris had the coral ring equipped and was healed something like 8000 HP. Everyone else died and I was able to escape with Faris, heal my party, fight X-Death and then call it quits. Not interested in the least with trying to defeat Omega or Shinryuu. I was really glad that, unlike Omega, you could run from Shinryuu.

Zodiac spear wasn't just "cruel" it was essentially unsolvable unless you were just extremely lucky. There would be no other way to figure it out unless you were following a walkthrough. It's the dumbest type of game secret
In ff5 if you let the thief free in jail he opens 2-3 chests in the later game before you can reach them. thus leaving me without my completion trophies. damn you
The Omega Ruins mimic encounters from X are my pick. If you decide to "open" one of them, you'll be thrust into a damage sponge enemy with escape disabled, and pitiful rewards when defeated. Wastes of time.
FF12's Diamond Armlet in general was needlessly cruel. Without access to a guide you might never realise that wearing it might be screwing you over, as it tells you it will give you better stuff so why would you question it? Also even after playing the game multiple times I still need to play with a map up constantly to know if I should wear one or not for each treasure...
The FFXII one was dumb. If you didn’t have a strategy guide you would never have even known about the zodiac spear and about the chests you couldn’t touch. I had started a play through and got a strategy guide a little later on and when I read it I saw that and was like well shit. Started overs again.
Another list, another video where FFXVI is nowhere to be found. Not that it deserved to be in the video anyway. To be fair any chest in FFXVI couldve made this list because every chest you opened was a unrewarding dud you regret wasting time opening.
Most regretted chest opening: any of the ones in the original FFXII that made you unable to obtain the Zodiac Spear.

I spent over 20 hours reloading omega ruins until I got the 12 chests. It was not worth it.
Great video Great videogame Great youTuber
Zodiac spear wasn't just "cruel" it was essentially unsolvable unless you were just extremely lucky. There would be no other way to figure it out unless you were following a walkthrough. It's the dumbest type of game secret
Teleport trap in Elden Ring definitely
Came to see if zodiac spear made the list... Wasn't dissappointed
Never got the 99 Warp Sheres this is just too random for me...
Ff6 tonberry in umaro's cave/narshe ( world of ruin)
The one I didn’t regret:
Lulu
😏
I know this video is ff games, but. The chest I regret the most is every lootbox on games I don't play anymore
How does Shinryu even fits there?
FF12 are really most furastating game i play collecting all weapon n gear just truly hell
Also the Mimics in Rogue Galaxy were obnoxious BUT their chests had a little red lock on them, so if you paid attention, they became trivial.
Zivilyn Bane in Skies of Arcadia could be a MENACE if you weren't prepared.
Nice just what I needed rn
FF1, near the end.. a beginner piece of equipment.. 'can't carry' you think 'must be something nice.. it isn't.
The FFXII one was dumb. If you didn’t have a strategy guide you would never have even known about the zodiac spear and about the chests you couldn’t touch. I had started a play through and got a strategy guide a little later on and when I read it I saw that and was like well shit. Started overs again.
One time I opened a chest and found Justin Timberlake
Cool story. I like to super glue my thumbs to my nipples and pretend I'm a 🦖
*FF7 Lost Number*
That's a safe not a chest😂😅
Frieren disliked this video...
Filler content is filling.
Ff7 need I say anymore harsh very harsh 😆😂🤣
Another list, another video where FFXVI is nowhere to be found. Not that it deserved to be in the video anyway. To be fair any chest in FFXVI couldve made this list because every chest you opened was a unrewarding dud you regret wasting time opening.
Fully expected FFV's Shinryu to appear on this list, and was not disappointed. Damn thing ruined my entire run.
Every chest in my trek for the Necromancer title in Palace of the Dead (FFXIV)
There were times it ended my run after 10+ hours
