- See and hear rising star Nathan Laube recorded live on July 9th at this year's Organ Historical Society Convention in Chicago. His program features works by Widor, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and Brahms, including Laube's new transcriptions from the works of Mendelssohn, Liszt, and his closing work, the exciting Academic Festival Overture, Opus 80, by Johannes Brahms. A pre-performance interview with Laube by Jim Weaver, Organ Historical Society Executive Director, provides insight into the program and the 132 rank Skinner pipe organ (1928 Opus 634; 2008 Schantz rebuild) at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago.

How can I really express my appreciation, my delight, my heart-felt wonder at realizing that a person named Nathan Laube lives and shares his joy (expertise) with the rest us? He didn't come into this world to just play music for himself; he came to share his heart with the rest of us. Maybe... all I can say is: Thank you God. !!!!!
I imagine old Johannes Brahms standing with the audience and singing to the best performance of "The Academic Festival Overture" and "Gaudeamus Igitur" I have EVER heard. Could it be Virgil Fox was influencing Nathan Laube's performance here? Thank you to all who made this possible and for sharing it here.
Just such inspirational playing, just so gifted, i was privileged to hear and speak to him on the opening recital at Kings College Cambridge England i will never forget his playing then Thank you Nathan.
Absolutely phenomenal! What a thrilling experience to hear "Gaudeamus Igitur" sung. Every time I hear the Academic Festival Overture I want to burst out singing it at the end. Indeed I often do when I play a recording at home. This is how folks were able to hear the great orchestral literature many years ago in remote locations where symphony orchestras were not available or too expensive to engage. Organists of the day would perform these transcriptions on the "orchestral" instruments of that era. Thanik you Nathan Laube for bringing back a wonderful tradition!
Nathan played the rededicatory recital on the historic 1947 Aeolian Skinner organ at first pres church in Lancaster post restoration about 5 yrs ago. He was only 25 yrs old then.
Have never, ever, never, ever heard a more awesome selection of music. This guy is the most awesome player I've ever heard. Can't wait to hear more (that is, if I ever leave this video). The last few minutes of the audience singing gave me "goosebumps." Awesome!

I understand how you feel I am 12 years old and have a passion for the organ one time me and my parents went up to the St Andrews pipe organ after church in Grand Rapids of Michigan.
Very professional, and a very delightful young man. The world has some great upcoming organists in Asia, Europe and Australia.
Fascinating and educational! I'm not 100% sure just how I ended up here but it's greatly worth my while. All the voices, all the different instruments one can play, with one incredible marvel of complexity! Awesome and majestic. I can barely play "Chopsticks" but I certainly appreciate the technical mastery and coordination required to play this huge instrument. Wonderful concert!
The conversation at the beginning is very enjoyable and educational. I go out of my way to add documentaries about organs and organists, sometimes no organ music in them at all, to my 30,000 track organ collection. Some documentaries are a lot more interesting than many organ concerts.

I would understand people's complaints about talking if it were a public concert, where the people have paid to hear you play, and not for a lecture. However, this was for a convention, and more to the point this is on TH-cam....and if you don't like the talking, skip past it.

Still enjoy this, but still wonder why the cameraman didn't capture his feet the last few seconds? He was playing mostly with his feet towards the end. Disappointing for sure.
Schantz is an excellent company. I wonder how accurately this restoration was. How much of the original organ was restored to the tonal design by Skinner. It seems such a shame that Skinner could not have realized that he could have is wonderful tonal resources and still have the brilliance of the Diapasons. He had everything else. It was this one thing that caused the split with Harrison.
Considering Schantz went beyond restoration and added 22 additional ranks I suppose this is more of a rebuilding restoring and retaining the original Skinner work and adding in a sympathetic style.
Very nicely done! Why is the instrument so dull sounding? I'm used to Skinners being so much brighter.
Skinners by G. Donald Harrison are much brighter, but Skinners by E. M. Skinner himself are much richer and have less sparkle on top.
Dear Nathan; The time is coming when you, dear Nathan, will graduate beyond repeating history into creating history. This will require incorporating the electric possibilities of synthesizers at the console and therefore all those sounds that are now possible in what is called the New Age Sonic Spectrum. Go for it baby! And most importantly, 'we' want to hear your compositions, please. God bless you in all your ways. Why does Nathan need to explore digital sounds? This concept is nothing new by any means, nor is it creating any tangible history of any significance.
Dear praestant8; Nathan doesn't need to explore anything... but he will. You may have stultified your musical and compositional abilities, but Nathan hasn't. He is still young and as he loved this particular organ, he's still growing. And as God is my witness, he will grow and out grow the sonic abilities of this wonderful instrument. He will soon discover the synclavarier and its possibilities. With a heart like his and the entire range of sonic and electronic abilities directly in front of him... he will. Just wait... he'll start to compose music, his own music. Then... we'll here what his heart really has to say. Listen. He'll make Brahms Academic Festival sound like... yesterday's news. Nathan Laube... Natan Laube is still alive and so is his heart... growing into the 21 Century. Sincerely, Moi.
Too bad this instrument is underutilized for more artists of this caliber. It needs restraint and sensitive ear or the trumpet stop will blow your ears out!

I'm positive it was an excellent program. I got tired of his going on and on. Reminds me of an organist friend who loved to hear himself talk . That changed when he finally realized he's pretty much trying "tooting his own horn". Most people are not interested. Shut up and play.
Consider that lectures are part of the OHS convention.
