- Kathleen Ferrier sings Rhapsody for contralto,
male chorus and orchestra, op 53
by Johannes Brahms
London Philharmonic Choir
London Philharmonic Orchestra
Clemens Krauss, conductor
18.& 19.XII. 1947
Aber abseits wer ist's?
Im Gebüsch verliert sich der Pfad.
Hinter ihm schlagen
Die Sträuche zusammen,
Das Gras steht wieder auf,
Die Öde verschlingt ihn.
Ach, wer heilet die Schmerzen
Des, dem Balsam zu Gift ward?
Der sich Menschenhaß
Aus der Fülle der Liebe trank?
Erst verachtet, nun ein Verächter,
Zehrt er heimlich auf
Seinen eigenen Wert
In ungenugender Selbstsucht.
Ist auf deinem Psalter,
Vater der Liebe, ein Ton
Seinem Ohre vernehmlich,
So erquicke sein Herz!
Öffne den umwölkten Blick
Über die tausend Quellen
Neben dem Durstenden
In der Wüste!
This has to be one of the most beautiful and moving pieces in all of Western music. When she soars above the chorus with that sublime theme, "Ist auf deinem Psalter, Vater der Liebe ..." it just takes your breath away.
I fell in love with this recording when I was 15. 50 years later I am still as moved as when I first heard it.
You hear this performance and you feel "why should anyone else even try"? It comes as close to definitive as one can imagine.
Of all her works the Alto always makes me cry, am 81 and utterly adore her life.
Wonderful. If you have not heard her recording of Der Abschied from Das Lied von der Erde (Bruno Walter, Vienna Phil./Decca 1953), you owe it to yourself. Simply wondrous.
She was to my mind the best ever Contralto singer.
Kathleen Ferrier, one of my most adored musicians.
The best Contralto I have heard. Even with the poor technology of the time her recordings are ahead of any others. Listen to her only live recording of Gluck in Amstaredam in 1951. Imagine this voice with today's recording technology.
I have been listening to this piece for 50 years never ceasing to wonder at the beauty ,clarity and sincerity of her singing ,what a voice what a delight !
A voice not of this earth surely but of heaven!😢
She was amazing her performances are so moving and emotional.
Dear admirers of perfection, close the doors and windows and have
Noblesse, beauté, grandeur de l' Interprétation..
Not only a voice out of this world but a beautiful woman with the warmest personality which comes through her singing.
The most sublime composition and performance ever. This work is a thing belonging to eternity.
This voice is a gift to us all - delivered with art and feeling- thank you Kathleen- Rest in Peace with your fellow Angels!!!
Time stands still when listening to this music and performance. Ferrier used her God-given voice to express the deepest longings of the human spirit. It’s unbearably sad that she died so young. But her voice lives through these recordings which make life worth living.
Её искусство, поистине не преходяще, какое счастье, что остались записи этого красивейшего голоса и непревзойдённого мастерства этой прекрасной певицы.
Just breaks your heart. What an incredible voice!
