    Paul Harris magic changed my approach to doing close up magic. It was so weird and cool when I first saw it back in the late 70's. I still do Naked Strange, Las Vegas Leaper and Vacuum Cleaner Cards all the time.

    I hope to god that he could release another 3 AOA books with everything he worked on after the first 3 volumes.
    So much of my performing material comes from his books and True astonishments and its absolute GOLD!

    Thank you for this Craig! Newer magicians need to learn about PH! Regarding the book series “ The Art of Astonishment” I have a personal project, filming all the tricks from the books, as sort of a video library for people reading the books.
    I have done over 120 videos already, I might not be the best performer but readers can see the effects. I would love to know what you think!

    Hi. I’m an Australian amateur magician. Thanks for the video. I love PH work too, however the only PH book I have is AoA #1 which I must admit I haven’t fully explored. What other effects do you think are the strongest from this book and are must haves in a standing/roving routine? Can you suggest any other books or DVDs of his work?
    I assume you know of The Jerx? I’ve only just come across his website/posts and his performance philosophy really resonates with me. To be honest I haven’t done much magic in years, but keen to get back on the horse doing a little impromptu magic for friends and family. Nothing too planned or showy.
    Can you please recommend any other books, DVDs, or effects focused on everyday objects that would work well in casual settings and provide a strong experience? Also, are u aware of any effects that work well with Au currency? It’s really hard to make any effects work well with other countries bills I find.
    If you have time to respond, please feel free to email me any recommendations or your thoughts at sitbon21@optusnet.com.au. Thanks Andrew

    Another excellent, informative video Craig. I have to admit, I've never been a fan of Paul Harris, nor his style of Magic. Although creative, I just often perceived it contained too many brainfarts, rather than commercial (no reset) Real World workers. His material just reminded me of Jay Sankey - another Magician whose material, to the most part, left me cold. In the 80's and 90's, I got a lot more mileage (and commercial material) from Harry Lorayne's Best of Friends and Apocalypse to be honest. Apart from a few items, such as Solid Deception, I didn't find a lot of Paul's better material to be suited to non-reset walkaround; despite buying and studying (before reselling) AofA 1-3. I also believe AofA contains a lot of pointless waffle; not to mention enough blank space/pages to potentially have saved a Rainforest. Just my opinion mate.

    • @magic-tv
      @magic-tv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey. That’s the good thing about magic. There are. So many options.
      I do think he has a tendency to create a lot of pipe dreams and unworkable routines (a bit like Sankey) but there are so many good routines that fit my style he has created throughout the years that it’s worth studying. At least for me.

    • @BarryAllenMagic
      @BarryAllenMagic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@magic-tv You make such an important point there actually Craig- "they fit your style". It's a question that I've always pondered - whilst we should be performing what goes over well with our audiences, is it important to also select those tricks that we personally prefer AND believe fits our individual style; as (if we as performers like them) we'll present them with more passion/conviction? That's why I probably missed out on some PH material.....I didn't perceive it to fit my preferred type of performance.

    From time to time, I think 'I don't like this channel. Craig is way too opinionated and he has opinions that I often disagree with.' But I'll be damned if you aren't the hardest working TH-camr in magic, and you've got a genuinely massive breadth of knowledge across a huge range of areas. Also, I love that you aren't trying to sell me some shit every episode, or repeatedly begging -- even if it's just for likes and subscriptions. If I have a serious criticism, it's about your interviews. Don't get me wrong -- I love the interviews, they're your best feature, but you either need to seriously edit them down, or get better about the questions you ask. I mean, I love Fay Presto as much as the next guy, but three and a half hours? Who has three and a half hours to listen to her ramble on. Figure out what bits are important and edit out the dross. I don't know whether the TH-cam stats tell you this but I'd be really interested in what proportion of people watch the long interviews all the way through.
    Anyway, that's just my opinion -- take it or leave it, but by and large, youre doing a great job.

    • @magic-tv
      @magic-tv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment buddy. All I try to do is put the sort of content out that I would want to watch. I just hope other people like the same stuff as me.
      As for the interviews the stats show pretty much everyone watched them all the way through. They are edited down as they start a lot longer! But I really appreciate the feedback.

    Paul Harris is one of the magicians who 1st caught my eye when I was opened to the World Of Magic. This was back in the 80s when I was doing backstage work with Harry Blackstone and hanging at the Magic Castle.
    I never got good at performing, but I still get the urge to pick up a deck of cards occasionally.
    Usually, to practice on one of Paul's tricks! 😊

    Paul Harris changed my life.. when i was just starting into magic i was doing the basics, the classics.. then I saw an old video of Steve Haynes Casanova concept (as performed by Dave Forrest I believe).. thne I learnt it was taught in true astonishments.. so i got that box set and everything in there blew my freaking mind. I wasn't really into cards.. it got me into cards and it got me thinking creatively.. then I got art of astonishment. Paul Harris through his creations and his theories taught me how to create magic. He expanded my mind on just what is possible with just a little creativity. His essays made me re-examine my relationship with a spectator and why I do magic. There are 3 fundamental people who made my magic and my magic style what it is: Paul Harris and Penn and Teller. I don't know how else to put it really. Paul Harris truly changed my life. God Bless Paul Harris.

Also enjoyed watching bizarre twist as I remember not doing this as I felt I couldn't get the move to look perfect, trying to get everything aligned etc but watching it performed now I can see it doesn't to be..EDIT Just realised that reads as if I think you're doing it badly which is not what I meant, you use a larger action to cover the.smaller action and it all just flows. ok I'll be quiet now 😊
