Great old Klaus, he radiated fragility, commitment and passion. His Mahler was both lyrical, glowing, majestic, tragic, exhilarating and overwhelming, pure blood-and-tears coming from heartfelt emotion, opposite most Mahler conductors...
I feel privileged of having been able to hear him live with a then rather poor danish orchestra, back in 1983!

This was a magnificent performance from 1990 when going to the theater to hear a great orchestra like chicago symphony was a real treat.People got dressed up and showed respect for the people performing. If you got a standing ovation back then you really deserved it.This conductor will be remembered for his emotion and love for the music of a great composer like Mahler and Tenndstedt showed this in every way Bravo !!!

What a performance! I've never heard Titan played like this. CSO was brilliant, and Maestro Tennstedt magnificent with his unorthodox conducting style. Tennstedt was a tall man and he utilized this feature nicely.

Observe the maestro at 34:05 as he wipes away a tear. That section illustrates his "non-technique" technique .Like Furtwangler, he " drew the shape of the music with the baton"

An absolutely overwhelming performance. To me, he was the conductor who best expressed the post-romantic lyrical spirit of Mahler. Probably even better than Walter who was Mahler's pupil...
He lets this music breathe like no other. My favorite above Walter, Kubelik, Giulini and Abbado.

This is my personal favorite of the almost countless Mahler 1 performances I have heard in more than 50 years of enjoying this wonderful masterpiece. I view it regularly. Tennstedt works the tempi and dynamics to fit the acoustics of the venue to perfection, beautifully capturing the varying moods of my favorite symphony. He was a unique and marvelous conductor who shows here his typical mastery from the concert podium in this exceptional performance by the CSO.

Here's why Bernstein is, to me, not in the first rank of Mahler interpretation, and Tennstedt is. In Mahler's music, Bernstein found the perfect vehicle to express his own powerful inner life: his raptures and sorrows, his passion and play, his immense grandiosity. But here's the thing: that's the opposite of what he should have been doing, which was expressing MAHLER'S visions. Tennstedt understood this perfectly.

    • @SynchroScore

Conducting is not about waving arms and baton. Tennstedt used body, shoulders, head movement and eye contact as well as shaping with hands and baton. In addition to the maestros already mentioned I could add Kubelik to the list. I've had occasion to correspond with several CSO musicians who played under Tennstedt's direction in this and other performances and they were unanimous in their praise and respect.

    • @jefolson6989
      @jefolson6989 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@leestamm3187 Yes. Tennstedt didn't learn baton technique at a conservatory. The CSO respected him. Those guys were tough and suffered not the charlatans. If they liked the conductor, they did what he wanted. If not, they played how THEY wanted. CARLOS
Kleiber personally marked the players music ahead of time. Frank Miller (celist) made a point to erase it all in the rehearsal! After a long esoteric explanation by Kleiber, Bud Herseth said " So, Maestro, do you want it louder" lol Typical CSO behavior. Toscanini was clear with the stick- like a bandleader.

@@mrinman7407I think he conducted LSO twice, before he became committed to the LPO, and the London orchestras back then had a rule in their contract that if you were their chief conductor or principal guest conductor, you were allowed to only conduct that London orchestra, and that became the LPO for tennstedt

When you download you have no ads---------------- These ads are a shame ! As for Tenstedt: I become an admiring and respectful fan of this truly great conductor, whose art has been very well commented (and in just way) by many fellow ytubers here. Klaus was simply.... Great! And my first listening of (Great) Tennsted conducting Mahler was exactly the First Symphony, that imediately impressed me so much ! Nice too that several YTs mentioned Abaddo and Kubelik. Here in SPaulo, Brazil Dudamel is greatly appreciated

Quite honestly, Im trying to think of a romantic composer whose first symphonic attempt equaled Mahler's first in originality, emotional power and sheer greatness? Maybe Brahm's first. Certainly not Beethoven- Perhaps some of you could add to the list!
